Abstract:
Background:There is limited data regarding objectively measured energy cost and intensity of classroom instruction. Therefore, the purpose of current study was to objectively measure energy cost and subsequently calculate MET values using a portable indirect calorimeter (IC) for both normal classroom instruction (NCI) and active classroom instruction (ACI).Methods:We assessed energy expenditure (EE) and intensity levels (METs) in elementary school children (17 boys and 15 girls) using an IC (COSMED K4b2). Independent t-tests were used to evaluate potential sex and grade level differences for age, BMI, VO2, EE, and METs.Results:The average EE for NCI and ACI were 1.8 ± 0.4 and 3.9 ± 1.0, respectively. The average intensity level for NCI and ACI were 1.9 ± 0.4 and 4.2 ± 0.9 METs, respectively.Conclusions:PA delivered through ACI can elicit EE at a moderate intensity level. These results provide evidence for ACI as a convenient/feasible avenue for increasing PA in youth without decreasing instruction time.

Abstract:
Background: Adolescent pregnancy an important problem in adolescent health and government agencies need to focus on solving problem. The purpose of this research was to survey the perceptions of community stakeholders concerning the prevention of adolescent pregnancies in rural communities. Methods: Data collection was performed using group meetings with 103 stakeholders involved in adolescent pregnancy prevention. They were nurses, public health officials, parents or guardians, students, teachers, public health volunteers and community leaders. Thematic analysis indicated work on adolescent pregnancy prevention problems in rural areas was carried out by only some agencies such as district and sub-district health promoting hospitals, providing youth-friendly health service clinics and educating student leaders in schools on sex education. Results: Collectively, these results draw attention to the need for an appropriate program to strengthen adolescent, family and practitioner skills for the prevention of teenage pregnancies. Schools provide sex education as part of a health education curriculum, and some schools provide additional instruction in guidance classes. Problems from inconsistent work when networks fail were encountered. Stakeholders believe adolescent pregnancy prevention should focus on the following: (1) adolescents should receive training for skill development with content related to knowledge about sex, negotiation, refusal, morality and ethics, (2) teachers should receive training on comprehensive sexual education, and, (3) families should work to improve their communication on sexual health and development Conclusions: There is a strong need for families to develop the ability to communicate with each other about sexuality and reproductive health. Developing parenting skills on how and when to talk about sex with their adolescents and open parental communication on sexuality issues at home is necessary. Activities need to also be developed for adolescents who are more inclined to engage in risky sexual behaviors.

Abstract:
Background Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a significant public health concern in the US with at least 250,000 injuries occurring annually. The rate of ACL reconstruction in adolescents has risen 33% in the past 20 years. Much effort has been dedicated to developing neuromuscular training (NMT) programs to reduce the risk of ACL injury. While preventive programs have been successful in decreasing the rate of ACL injury in young populations, the appropriateness of NMT exercises across different age groups has not yet been demonstrated. The purpose of this study is to determine if children ages 8-11 and 12-15 can perform common NMT exercises with equal ability. Methods In 2016, Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) developed a series of NMT programs for young athletes. Seven exercises were selected for evaluation from both the Beginner (8-11) and Intermediate (12-15) programs. Male and female subjects aged 8-15 were recruited from schools and youth sports organizations in and around New York City. Informed consent/assent was obtained from each subject. Participants completed a demographic survey and were assigned a subject ID before testing. Participants completed two trials of each exercise. Performance was assessed after receiving visual/verbal exercise instruction and again after receiving visual/verbal cues that reinforced correct exercise technique. Three sports medicine practitioners evaluated each exercise using three performance criteria. Exercise technique was deemed correct when at least two evaluators agreed that neutral alignment of the cervical spine, lumbopelvic complex and lower extremities was maintained during each exercise. Comparisons of performance within each sex were made for 8-9 & 10-11 and 12-13 & 14-15 groups using Chi-square test or Fisher’s exact test using SAS version 9.4 (SAS Inc., Cary, NC). Results 301 total participants were evaluated (8-11 years: n = 165, 54.2% female; 12-15 years: n = 136, 39.9% female). The percentage of participants who performed exercises correctly are shown in Table 1 and 2 (attached). There was no significant difference between male and female participants who completed exercises correctly in either cohort. There was also no significant difference noted in exercise performance between participants aged 8-9 & 10-11 years or between participants aged 12-13 & 14-15 years. The use of technique cues significantly increased the percentage of participants who correctly completed the exercise across all ages and sexes (p < 0.001). 21% of the cohort aged 8-11 completed exercises correctly when provided with exercise instruction and 45% completed exercises correctly when provided with technique cues. 29% of the cohort aged 12-15 completed exercises correctly when provided with exercise instruction and 59% completed exercises correctly when provided with technique cues. The kappa statistic was used to measure inter-rater reliability and among all criteria for all evaluators k = 0.31 (8-11 cohort) and k = 0.42 (12-15 cohort). Conclusion Our results indicate that male and female children aged 8-9 & 10-11 years and 12-13 & 14-15 years can perform common NMT exercises with equal ability. This is an important consideration when designing preventive programs for young athletes based on chronological age. Additionally, only one-fourth all study participants were able to perform common NMT exercises with correct technique when provided with visual/verbal exercise instruction, while over one-half of the participants were able to perform these same exercises correctly when provided with visual/verbal technique cues. This improvement highlights the importance of providing cues that effectively improve exercise technique for young athletes. Based on motor learning theory, repeated cuing would likely increase the percentage of children who perform NMT exercises correctly. These results call attention to the urgent need for coaches and physical educators to provide appropriate technique cues when implementing NMT programs. [Table: see text][Table: see text]

Abstract:
We examine condom failure and use error experienced by high school youth in two regions of the United States. Data are from a baseline survey of a randomized controlled trial to evaluate FLASH, a sexual health education curriculum for high school students. Participants were 1,597 ninth- or 10th-grade students in health class who had parental consent and who assented to participate in the study. This study examines condom use behavior among students who reported vaginal or anal sex at baseline. Of the 222 participants who reported having vaginal or anal sex in the 3 months prior to baseline survey, 180 of them reported using a condom at least once. Of these youth, 70.6% reported that they did not squeeze the tip of the condom before sex, 25.0% of youth reported that they did not roll the condom all the way down to the base of the penis, and 49.4% reported that they did not hold the base of the penis when pulling out; 36.9% reported experiencing condom breakage or slippage. The frequency of condom error and/or failure reported by young adolescents in this study indicates a need for further education on potential condom use errors with an emphasis on the correct steps for using a condom to prevent condom failure. High rates of error and failure suggest an opportunity for educators to tailor preexisting condom use interventions to further reinforce the skills necessary for effective condom use and to educate on what to do in the event of condom failure.

Increasingly, schools and libraries are incorporating egaming because of its attraction to youth and its potential benefit for instruction, developing information literacy skills, and facilitating academic success. Although egames are played by most youth, egaming has gender-linked properties: extent of play, choice of games, social interaction in gaming, and novice gaming practice. School libraries are uniquely positioned to provide resources and services to insure gender-equitable gaming experiences: gaming periodicals, opportunities to select and review games, and single sex activities. Emerging trends of casual gaming, mobile egaming, and gaming design offer opportunities that can attract girls, which teacher librarians can leverage.

Abstract:
The purpose of this article was to examine the relationships between (a) youth and facility characteristics and (b) youth risk and resilience factors (i.e., mental health, self-determination [SD]) in juvenile justice facilities. Extant self-report data from 205 nationally representative correctional facilities and 7,073 youth, collected as part of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Survey of Residential Placement, were analyzed. Youth charateristics included sex, race, disability classification, mental health status, traumatic events/abuse encountered, offense committed, and SD. Facility factors included facility climate and counseling services. Results indicated that both prior abuse and victimization in the facility were positively correlated with mental health symptoms and SD. Positive perceptions of facility climate were associated with lower mental health symptoms. Youth who were female, younger, with a learning disability, and had committed a violent offense, reported more mental health symptoms. Positive perceptions of facility climate and receipt of counseling in the facility were associated with higher SD. Contrary to expectations, prior abuse and victimization in the facility were associated with higher SD. Recommendations include creating positive facility climates, developing targeted SD instruction, and providing tailored counseling services to facilitate successful transitions out of juvenile justice.

Consent to sex is a topic of much research, particularly with the goal of optimizing sex education for youth, college students, and military service personnel. Sex educators have tended to err on the side of clear and concise definitions of consent for ease of instruction. However, the sexual science literature has steadily shown that the navigation of consent to sexuality activity is much more nuanced, situated and contextual. When consent is conceptualized as a yes or no answer to particular sexual acts or sexual activity altogether, it overlooks the dynamic nature of how people experience consenting. This article examines consent in the sexual science research literature and then considers these findings through the lens of some of the contributions of phenomenological philosophy. We then discuss the experience of consent as a dialogic process that can lead to moments of transcendence of the self and deep reverence for the other, despite some moments of lack of clarity or ambiguity within the same sexual act.

Print.As North American jurisdictions play host to battles over proposed sex education curricula, barriers to providing basic sexual health information to youth are becoming painfully evident. In the place of strong classroom instruction, many governments expect parents to engage in these conversations, but even progressive parents may feel inadequately prepared for discussing sex education with their LGBT children. Similar issues exist surrounding cultural identification and attainment; where most youth simply observe or take part in family and societal practices, queer youth must undertake greater lengths to self-educate and identify.Enter James Dawson’s publication, This Book is Gay, which serves as part sex education, part cultural information manual for all things LGBT. With strong credentials as a former teacher and YA author, Dawson also deployed an international survey and conducted interviews to add statistics and quotations that expand and diversify the experiences captured within the book. The book covers a vast array of topics complete with catchy chapter titles, including terminology (“The Name Game”), homophobia and transphobia (“The Fear” and “Haterz Gonna Hate”) and, a topic of interest to most LGBT teens, same sex education (“The Ins and Outs of Gay Sex”). Within these chapters is a balance of reader empowerment, stereotype dismantling, community building and jokes - lots of jokes - to keep the reader entertained and informed throughout. Adding to the levity and frankness of Dawson’s tone are illustrator Spike Gerrell’s ebullient comics (think lightning bolts retreating from a gonorrhea patient’s groin).An uplifting read that will inform and entertain all types of readers, I highly recommend This Book is Gay. The book does use certain colloquialisms native to Dawson’s United Kingdom, but these should serve as only very minor distractions - or even points of curiosity - to the non-British reader. This Book is Gay would work as a very thoughtful gift to a newly out or questioning teen, but there needs to be a place for it in every junior high and high school library. ObjectivesThe appropriateness of neuromuscular training exercises across different age groups has not yet been investigated, particularly in younger children. The purpose of this study was to determine which neuromuscular training exercises can be performed with proper neutral alignment in various age groups.MethodsSeven exercises were selected for evaluation in children ranging from 8 to 17 years of age who were recruited from schools and youth sports organisations. Participants completed two trials of each exercise and were judged on maintaining neutral body alignment after receiving visual/verbal instruction on the first trial and feedback cues on the second trial. Three evaluators judged each exercise, which was deemed as correct when at least two evaluators agreed that neutral alignment was maintained. Comparisons were made across ages and between sex using the χ² test or Fisher’s exact test. The proportions of participants who performed the exercise correctly were also compared before and after feedback cues were provided.ResultsA total of 360 participants were evaluated (8–11 years: 165, 54% female; 12–15 years: 136, 40% female, 16–17 years: 59, 53% female). There were no significant differences in performance across ages and sex for nearly all exercises. The majority of children were not able to complete the exercises with proper alignment. The use of feedback cues significantly increased the proportion of participants who correctly completed the exercise (p<0.001).ConclusionsThese results demonstrate the importance of training coaches and physical education teachers to provide cues that reinforce proper technique during anterior cruciate ligament injury prevention exercises. Children should perform common neuromuscular training exercises with feedback on proper technique.Level of evidenceIV (case series).

A remarkable pseudo-sodomitical sight gag in the Hollywood comedy film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me brings to mainstream discourse two new queer desiring and desired figures: the man-fisting woman and the woman-fisted man. The simulated act of anal fisting occurs in a tent between leading male and female agents Austin Powers (Mike Myers) and Felicity Shagwell (Heather Graham). While Powers is on all fours, Shagwell inserts her hand and forearm into his utility bag and removes various objects including an opening umbrella and a gerbil. However, to a posse of astounded males hiding in the bushes, it appears in silhouette that Shagwell has inserted her fist into Power's rectum and is slowly removing the objects from deep inside his anal canal. This subversive heterosexual performance draws upon marginalised visual narratives of female and male sodomites. The queer man-fisting woman comprises a revolutionary feminist figure. Before surfacing to stake her claim in Austin Powers, the figure of the fisting woman gathered representational momentum in underground pornographic and erotic visual art discourses. Until recently, queer female sodomites penetrated males by finger or dildo, not by whole hand. For example, an erotic sadomasochistic (SM) drawing from the 1930s by Bernard Montorgueil (Néret backflap) depicts several clothed women stimulating the ani of various naked tied-up ejaculating men with small mechanical dildos. A pornographic photograph from the 1950s features a bikini-wearing woman with her strapped-on dildo in the anus of a naked reclining spread-legged man (Waugh 20). By the 1990s images of female-in-male fisting acts had appeared in coffee table art monographs. Jacqueline Kennedy's photograph Other Chambers (Salaman 138) depicts such a scene with only the braceleted arm and male torso showing. Andres Serranos' photograph The History of Sex (The Fisting) shows a fully-dressed erect woman with her fist in the anus of a naked man who poses on all fours at the bottom of the picture. One of Doris Kloster's SM photographs shows a man sandwiched between two women. The strapped-on dildo of one woman fills the man's mouth while that of the other woman projects into his rectum. These female sodomites seemingly merge the figures of the SM dominatrix and the female penetrator of males, to form a new creation that could be named the 'penetratrix'. Queer performance artist Annie Sprinkle, who (as "Queen of the Hellfire" SM club) fist-fucked a man up to her elbow (Heidenry 161), is one such pioneering penetratrix. Another is queer writer Zoë Schramm-Evans, who has documented her fistfucking relationship with a gay man in British journal, Body Politic. Schramm-Evans probably speaks for other penetratrices when she declares of her desires to fist the male anus: "I like a man who will lie on his back with his legs in the air -- who will offer his secrets in the way I offer mine. I consider this an equilibrium" (cited in Dowsett 28). The man-fisting penetratrix is a queer production that brings narratives of corporeal cross-sexual power relationships full circle: the penetrator is now the penetrated. The inscription of Felicity as 'top' would not work without Austin as 'bottom' -- a heterosexual male persona that embodies the pleasure of being penetrated by a female agent. The image of anal-receptive Austin draws on the pantheon of fisted gay, bisexual and heterosexual men that have featured in representations of the fisting female sodomite, such as those already mentioned. Other influential works might include Andres Serrano's photograph The History of Sex (Christiaan and Rose) (1996), which depicts a woman pressing the dildo worn over her vulva against a man's buttocks. The cover of Enema of the State, a compact disc by all-male heterosexual band Blink-182, contains a photograph of a smiling female nurse pulling a blue glove over her raised hand. The extended Shagwell-in-Powers fisting gag entails from a history of 'red hanky' SM representations of gay male anal erotica which has tested the diametric limits of the most dilatable orifice in the male body. Examples include Robert Mapplethorpe's photograph Helmut and Brooks, N.Y.C., 1978 (Danto plate 107), which shows one man's large forearm in another's anus, and the Mo' Bigga' Butt video which has two male hands in a male anus. One patron of the Hellfire reportedly could take "an entire rack of billiard balls up his rectum" (Heidenry 161). Such inter-male sexual practices produce "intense sexual pleasure while bypassing, to a greater or lesser extent, the genitals themselves" and involve "the eroticisation of non-genital regions of the body" (Halperin 47). In countenance to standard heterosexual productions in which "the phallus is monolithic and absolute", in these gay male productions "attraction to the penis, contextualized in a holistically eroticized body, is not always the focus of sexual desire" (Jackson 147). In Homosexual Desire, Guy Hocquenghem contended that the gay sauna, a private inter-male consensual sex sphere of the 1970s, would provide a pornutopian space for such "primary sexual communism" (111). In the contemporary popular screen production Austin Powers, the fisted man has become a public, post-orgasmic, de-phallicised object of heterosexual female desire. Man-fisting females and woman-fisted males con-fuse the modern sex/gender identities deployed this century to categorise desiring agents. At the end of his article "What Is Sexuality?", Gary Dowsett asks of the Schramm-Evans female-in-male fisting relationship, "in being fist-fucked by a woman is the gay man still homosexual? In committing sodomy with her arm, is Schramm-Evans still woman?" (29). We could ask similar questions about the gender identities and sexual desires of the queer women, men, and transgenderists, who have contributed to the imag(in)ing of the 'penetratrix'. The simple answer may be that all are 'bisexual/s'. However, gay, lesbian, bisexual and heterosexual categories of identity hinge upon desires for specific (similar and/or different) genital morphologies. These identities are upset by performances such as anal-fisting which inscribe organs with omnisexual, non-genital morphologies as objects of desire. In lesbian-in-gay fisting performances "not only has gender been exposed as a masquerade in the service of modern heterosexuality, sexuality has become a field of possibilities where the entanglements of bodies and pleasures and the manufacture of meaning are already bursting through their century-long confinement" (Dowsett 29). Feminists such as Germaine Greer have reformulated sexual metaphors to challenge narratives that define woman as castrated lack. In The Whole Woman, Greer explains that her earlier feminist text, The Female Eunuch, "attempted to provide a different version of female receptivity by speaking of the vagina ... as if it sucked on the penis and emptied it out rather than simply receiving the ejaculate" (39). She now notes that such "cunt-power" has "still to manifest itself". Instead, "penetration mania, the outsize dildo and the fist, [and] the world split open" (39) have manifested "in the last third of the twentieth century [when] more women were penetrated deeper and more often than in any preceeding era" (6). On all these accounts Greer is correct but offers only part of the story. Her desire to change (heterosexual) women's views of their (and male) anatomies is admirable, but such new (hetero)sexual metaphors alone may have negligible effects on male viewpoints. Let's also note that, in the last thirty years, more men were penetrated through the anus (and other orifices) deeper, wider, and more often than ever before (in medical and sexual, indeed, any contexts). Also significantly, more women actively penetrated more men (and more women) deeper, wider and more often than ever before. Man's world and body are also splitting open, and women, too, are wielding dildos and fists and medical equipment to make them split. Queer women who directly act on their desires to infiltrate male bodies (while doing as they desire with their own vulvae) also create cunt-power. It may be most difficult for theorists, including some queer theorists, who have cast the lesbian feminist "with or without dildo" as "the dreaded figure of castration and lack" (Probyn 46) to so typify a queer woman who twists her fist into a male anus. The potential power of the newly arrived male-fisting penetratrix is palpable for women and men. Thus, the penetratrix, as an image "freed from its post within a structure of law, lack, and signification, can begin to move all over the place. It then causes different ripples and affects, effects of desire and desirous affects. What better way for men to understand some of the pleasure and pain involved in vaginal births or deep vaginal penetrations than to have (at least imagined) a large object going in and out of their rectum? Rather than trying to formulate such rhetoric, Greer claims that men are correct to resist regular ano-digital examinations for prostate problems. Now that heterosexual men have begun to experience physical insertions that rupture their monolithic masculinity, Greer discourages them. Critical reactions to the groundbreaking images of the male-penetrating female in Austin Powers have been mixed. In the national newspaper Evan Williams remarked rather uncomfortably that "the silhouetted extraction of assorted paraphernalia from Austin's backside -- go[es] on much too long". On national youth radio Michael Tunn rather excitedly praised the gag as "the funniest I've seen". At the cinema I attended, several adults giggled during the scene. I was bent over in hysterics while a young woman up behind me laughed most powerfully. Did the sudden stunned silence of a teenage male who had been sniggering with desire for Heather Graham's body hide his excited discomfort at the realisation of her phallic desiring power and his desire to be penetrated? Clearly, a chord had been struck deep within him. The positive subversive effects on children exposed to the graphic imaging of reversed bodily sex and gender rôles should also not be underestimated. The queer man-fisting woman reconfigures standard feminist sexual (pre)positions. To the heterocentric paradigm of woman-on-top and man-on-bottom have been added the queer figures of the woman-as-top and the man-as-bottom. The genito-centric anti-penetration agenda espoused in The Whole Woman denies the desires and effects of such man-penetrating female and woman-penetrated male agents. Austin Powers, on the other hand, celebrates these desiring figures in a climactic gender-fucking pièce de résistance. This Hollywood film only flirts with notions of fistfucking but is a credit to collaborating heterosexual actors Mike Myers and Heather Graham. Their queer simulated penetration scene comprises the film's most graphic and comedic representation of a (hetero)sexual act. At the end of the millennium, some women are taking matters of queer politics in hand, by raising their clenched feminist fists for a new sexual revolution. Some men are opening their ani wide to them and the pleasures and pains of (pomo)sexual equality, with rippling desires to become fulfilled queer male (w)holes. ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Zero new infections, zero AIDS related death and an HIV free generation is an attainable reality. But it is an attainable reality that requires the involvement of every member of the society. This is because the pandemic is touching every sector of human life. Without cure thirty years later, this calls for the world to identify their strong areas and utilize it to reach to the ultimate goal. Young people, have the power in their hands to take the world to the next level of an HIV free world. All they need is proper guidance, accurate information, enhancement of their skills for manage the pandemic. Life skills education (LSE) is an adult-led, educational platform created for young minds to get them involved in the management of the disease. LSE, focus mainly on HIV education and skills development. Some of the major skills are communication skills, negotiation skills, self esteem and interpersonal skills. These skills and others are necessary for young people in postponing the age their first sexual debut. They also come handy when negotiating safe sex, assessing their vulnerability and most importantly in decision making. Other skills such as empathy, anger management and other focus more addressing issues such as discrimination and stigmatization. Despite all the merits of this program LSE there has been a decline in the number of schools offering the approach. Most schools have been removing it from the school curriculum. This is where the research problem identified: What are the barriers of teaching LSE among teachers in the Leribe District? The research establishes the causes that have led to the exclusion of LSE. It looked into attitudes and opinions, the influence of the community on LSE. Based on the nature of the study, the mixed approach was used. This method, a combination of the qualitative and quantitative method has an advantage over the two as it has a combined effect of their strengths. Simple random selection was used for the research. The study found that lack of training and others were the major challenge faced by the LSE teachers. Recommendations were made which would help in successful re-implementation of the program.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Geen nuwe infeksies, geen vigsverwante sterftes en ’n MIV-vrye generasie is ’n haalbare realiteit. Dit is egter ’n haalbare realiteit wat die betrokkenheid van elke lid van die samelewing verg, aangesien die pandemie elke sektor van menslike lewe raak.By gebrek aan ’n middel teen dié siekte 30 jaar sedert dit die eerste keer aan die lig gekom het, rus die verantwoordelikheid nou op die internasionale gemeenskap om hul sterkpunte te bepaal en aan te wend om die einddoel te bereik. Jongmense hét wat dit verg om ons na die volgende vlak van ’n MIV-vrye wêreld te neem. Ál wat kortkom, is behoorlike leiding, akkurate inligting en die versterking van hul vaardighede om die pandemie te bestuur. Lewensvaardigheidsopvoeding (LVO) is ’n opvoedkundige platform onder volwasse leiding wat geskep is om jongmense by die bestuur van die siekte te betrek. LVO konsentreer hoofsaaklik op MIV-opvoeding en vaardigheidsontwikkeling. Van die belangrikste vaardighede is kommunikasie, onderhandeling, selfvertroue en interpersoonlike skakeling. Met hierdie én ander vaardighede kan jongmense hul eerste seksuele ervaring tot ’n latere ouderdom uitstel. Dit is ook nuttig in die onderhandeling van veilige sekspraktyke, die bepaling van hul eie kwesbaarheid en, bowenal, besluitneming. Ander vaardighede, soos empatie, woedebestuur, ensovoorts, konsentreer weer op kwessies soos diskriminasie en stigmatisasie. Ondanks die meriete van die LVO-program, is daar egter ’n afname in die aantal skole wat dit aanbied. Trouens, die meeste skole skrap dit uit die skoolkurrikulum. Vandaar die navorsingsprobleem wat in hierdie tesis aan bod kom: Wat verhinder onderwysers in die Leribe-distrik om LVO te onderrig? Die navorsing bepaal die oorsake vir die uitsluiting van LVO. Dit verken houdings en menings sowel as die invloed van die gemeenskap op LVO. As gevolg van die aard van die studie is ’n gemengde navorsingsbenadering gevolg. Hierdie benadering hou die voordeel in dat dit oor die sterkpunte van sowel die kwalitatiewe as kwantitatiewe metode beskik. Eenvoudige ewekansige seleksie is vir die navorsing gebruik. Die studie bevind dat ’n gebrek aan opleiding een van die hoofuitdagings is waarvoor die LVO-onderwysers te staan kom. Aanbevelings word gedoen wat sal help om die program met welslae weer in te stel.

The problem of youth has been a key issue in South Africa since 1994, with youth seen as needing extra guidance and leadership if they are to bring about the country that many hope for. The interest in youth is also spurred on by recent studies that claim that once adolescents establish certain behavioural patterns that it becomes difficult to modify these patterns. Little research exists that describes the ordinary sociological experiences of youth, especially on sensitive issues that attract a lot of public attention- such as teenage sex and pregnancies, and what is perceived as the ‘slipping of youth morals’. There is great concern that youth are experimenting with sex at too early an age in their social and political development (Frimpong 2010: 27). In my thesis I focus on the thinking, choices and decisions that learners at one high school in Cape Town seem to make with regard to sex and sexuality, and how their choices seem to be influenced by a variety of discourses attached to the provision of a sex education programme at the school; discourses that organise their everyday thinking and actions in very concrete ways. A key goal of the study was to disarticulate and re-articulate the deficit mentality that shapes discourses of sexuality in South Africa, and to develop ‘sexual’ stories and strategies of story-telling that allow the voices of learners to be heard (Pillow 2004). My focus in this study is mainly to explore how the sex education programme reconstitutes youth’s sexual identity. In my qualitative study I challenge the tendency to view youth participation in teen sex using mainly an abstinence-only discourse, and suggest that sex education programmes ‘contaminate’ and ‘mutilate’ youth understandings of sex and sexuality in quite complex ways.

This thesis investigates young people's understandings and experiences of 'good sex' and sexual pleasure, documenting the resources young people use to make sense of these meanings in the context of their everyday lives and relationships. The study uses a situated approach to explore the methodological possibilities for researching sexual pleasure with a diverse group of young people in one urban location and to examine the ways in which pleasure is embedded, mediated and gendered in young people's sexual cultures. The research is used to contribute to debates about the inclusion of pleasure in sexual health services for young people and make suggestions for future research/practice. Drawing on data from survey, focus group and interview methods the thesis documents the diversity of young people's understandings of 'good sex' and sexual pleasure, suggesting that young people have access to a range of competing discursive and affective frameworks for making distinctions between what counts as 'good' and 'bad' sex. Analyses suggest that sexual meanings and values are contested and contingent on young people's shifting sex and relationship experiences and social locations. Timeliness and reciprocity emerged as key contested areas, shaped by enduring gender arrangements and participants' evolving sexual biographies. The thesis provides a reflexive account of the practice of researching sexual pleasure with young people, reporting on each method to argue that the findings are situated, shaped by interactive and material context. The research documents the benefits of using critical feminist reflexivity to interrogate how researcher/practitioners can create safe spaces for engaging young people in work around sexual pleasure and concludes that possibilities for realising the 'pleasure project' in practice will depend on local, institutional and political context.

The thesis was designed to determine the relative impact of an academic course in human sexuality on specific sexual attitudes and intimate communication skills of undergraduate college students.Seventy-five students were subdivided into experimental and control groups. Data regarding personal sexual anxiety, sexual decision making skills and level of comfort about sexual issues were collected during the first and last weeks of the Spring 1990 semester. These served as pre and posttests. Descriptive data about the subjects were also obtained.The results of this study indicated that although males and females differ significantly from each other in sexual anxiety and sexual decision making skills, the subjects did not differ in their level of comfort. However, experimentalfemales did approach significant change in their reported comfort level scores from pre to posttest.
