This study investigated sex and menstrual cycle effects on speech and related behaviours. The test battery included motor and speeded speech based tasks (manual pegboard, single and multiple syllable repetitions, multiple word repetitions and verbal fluency) and lateralised auditory perception of syllables (dichotic listening). Speech production was analysed for speed and accuracy measures.

Abstract:
The research for this thesis lies within the field of speaker characterisation through the acoustic-phonetic analysis of speech. The thesis consists of two parts: 1. An investigation of the acoustic-phonetic differences between the speech of women and men; 2. An examination of the practicalities of automating the investigation to analyse a large speech database. The acoustic-phonetic markers of speaker sex examined here are the fundamental frequency, the formant frequencies, and the relative amplitude of the first harmonic. Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relation between ratings on items in the Communication/Hearing Patterns section of the Minimum Data Set for Nursing Home Resident Assessment (MDS; Morris et al., 1990) and performance on external criterion measures of linguistic communication and hearing. Linguistic communication was evaluated with the Story Retelling Subtest of the Arizona Battery for Communication Disorders of Dementia (ABCD; Bayles & Tomoeda, 1993) and the Functional Linguistic Communication Inventory (FLCI; Bayles & Tomoeda, 1994). Auditory evaluation included an otoscopic chec

For a ship sailing between destinations on a schedule, having a speed controllerthat can sail the ship according to a speed reference oers extended capabilitiesfor the crew. It is also a necessary tool for sailing the ship, according to anoptimally planned speed reference. A method used for speed control of largesea-going vessels today is PID-control. This solution, however, tends to oerpoor performance: the speed of the vessel tends to overshoot the reference duringreference changes and the controller has a hard time tracking the referenceunder disturbances from waves and wind. This thesis inv

The aim of this paper is to validate a dataset collected by means of production experiments which are part of the Questionnaire on Information Structure. The experiments generate a range of information structure contexts that have been observed in the literature to induce specific constructions. This paper compares the speech production results from a subset of these experiments with specific claims about the reflexes of information structure in four different languages. The results allow us to evaluate and in most cases validate the efficacy of our elicitation paradigms, to identify potential

Use of time-compressed speech stimuli has been found to be clinically effective in differential diagnosis of lesions of the temporal lobe. However, notably absent from the literature is information concerning performance of adults on time-compressed closed-set speech discrimination tasks. The goal of this study mas to compare performance of 12 males and 12 females between age 50 and age 70 on a time-compressed closed-set speech discrimination test against the performance of 12 males and 12 females between age 10 and age 28 on the same task.
