Full textToday one can live an ordinary life with HIV – work, sex, relationships and the ability to have children are all possible if the disease is treated. A medicated HIV is no longer lethal, but a chronic disease. Due to medical successes, those infected are no longer obligated to inform others of their disease, contributing to the possibility of a ‘normal’ life. Even still, society lacks consciousness regarding the medical advances of HIV, and the fear of sexual relations with an HIV-diagnosed person continues. This lack of knowledge, perpetuates the prejudice and fear of HIV. Those diagnosed with the disease are apt to have a low quality of life and self-image. Their deteriorated self-respect creates a limitation in their sex life, and can also leads to social isolation and depression. In this study researching, from a professional point of view, how those diagnosed with HIV are affected in their health and well-being in sexual situations, the result showed a connection between inadequate knowledge and stigmatization. The lack of societal knowledge contributes to discrimination and prejudices of people with HIV, leading to stigmatization. People with HIV apply these judgments on themselves, which leads to self-stigma. Self-stigmatization leads to a limited sex life, because the fear of being rejected or ill-treated is so high that they choose not to expose themselves in sexual situations. The fear of being stigmatized is often harder to deal with than the reality of being stigmatized. Living with a partner can create a condition for a good quality of life and self-image. Relationships make it possible for those with HIV to share their diagnosis with someone and still feel accepted and secure, in addition to enjoying a sex life without the fear of rejection.

Full textBackground: Urinary catheters are widely used in the healthcare. Catheter treatment can affect patients sex life and self-esteem negatively. Despite guidelines that highlight the importance of information about sex to patients, the sharing of information is often insufficient.Aim: The aim of the following study is to illuminate the nurse’s knowledge regarding sex during catheter-treatment; factors that affected if and when the patient received the information as well as how the information could be communicated.Method: Qualitative interviews with the help of a semi structured interview-guide was implemented on seven participants. The sample group included nurses which worked at a urology-clinic, health care center and 1177-telephone counseling. The data analysis method was based on Burnard’s (2008) content analysis method that resulted in three themes and a total of 14 categories.Findings: The findings present the nurse’s knowledge about sex while having a urinary catheter, factors that influence when and if information was shared and how the information can be communicated. The nurse had knowledge about the issue and also about how the sex life could be affected by the catheter treatment. Several factors were taken into consideration for information sharing to take place; the patient’s illness and age, civil status, taboo, the nurse’s relationship with the patient, time and diffusion of responsibility. The nurse saw that the information could be communicated in several ways, foremost through the creation of conditions where person centered care can take place in the dialogueand collaboration in the team. Requests for tools to help share information were made. Conclusion: Finally, an inadequate information sharing from the nurse to the patient during catheter treatment regarding sex was presented. In order to reach the requirements that are expected from the nurse, helpful tools could make sure a theoretical dialogue takes place in practice as well.

Full textIn Sweden, a fifth of the people with a spinal cord injury are women. The injury causes several difficulties for the women, both physical and psychological. Women are often stigmatized by the society in terms of not being thought to desire or need a sex life. There is not enough research done about how women experience their own sexuality. The aim of the study was hence to illustrate how women with spinal cord injury experience their sexuality. The method used was a literature review where 11 quantitative and qualitative articles were included. The results showed that more than half of the women with spinal cord injury were satisfied with their sex life. The women longed for intimacy; they were innovative and had positive attitudes towards overcoming the sexual difficulties the injury brought about. However, the women needed time for adjustment to be able to have a satisfying sex life. The counseling women get about their sexuality and sex life should be adjusted to fit the women as individuals. It also needs to be presented in the right way during the right phase that the women are in.

Full textBackground: To become a parent means great changes. The sexual relationship of expectant and new parents is of medical and psychological issue. Sexuality is a psychological resource factor and migth increase the quality of life for the couple as well as individually. Objective: of this paper was to highlight the effect of childbirth on the sexual function and the supportive roll of the midwife. Method: a systematic review based on ten relevant studies published in English or Swedish between 1990 to 2006. Result: The risk of dyspareunia and perineal pain postpartum is highly associated with assisted vaginal delivery and perineal damage. On the other hand, decreased sexual sensation, decreased sexual satisfaction as well as interruption in sexual intercourse, are not related to method of delivery. Although these problems seem to be of self-limited nature, it is of great importance for the parents to get adequate information about the typical pattern during pregnancy, postpartum and during breastfeeding in order to cope. In addition realistic expectation can be given to help parents through this very special period of life. Lack of adequate information about the typical postpartum pattern as well as lack of supportive measures are shown to jeopardize the future of the young family.
