In this thesis I argue that female masturbation is still in some ways seen as problematic even though it is no longer represented as a basis for shame and sin. Historians have shed light on the vicious campaign against masturbation in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but little attention has been dedicated to the twentieth century, beyond overviews of how ideas changed so that masturbation was no longer, allegedly, condemned. Inga studier har dock undersökt fenomenet i ensvensk kontext. Föreliggande studie undersökte sexual compliance och självobjektifiering hos gymnasieelever i årskurs tre. Two prospective investigations of periodicity of sexual behavior, well-being and testosterone (T) levels in women using and not using oral contraceptives (OCs) found no relationship between daily ratings of sexual desire and well-being across one pill and menstrual cycle. T, but not estradiol or progesterone, was positively correlated with sexual desire and sexual enjoyment in OC-users when T levels were below normal menstrual values. This thesis uses medical and psychiatric records to explore how physicians analysed `female sexual inversion' in Italy and Britain, c. 1870 to 1920. This study explores the function of female simulated orgasm in long-term relationships, and its significance for the individual’s perception of their own body and sexuality. Through a series of semi-structured interviews with subjects that have experiences with simulated orgasm, the study utilizes scripting theory to analyze and explain the meaning of the simulated orgasm.
