Abstract:
Understanding the risk factors that contribute to sexual offending against children is an important topic for research. The present study set out to examine whether deficits in emotion recognition might contribute to sexual offending, by testing if child sexual offenders were impaired in their recognition of facial expressions of emotion, particularly with children, relative to non-offender controls. To do this, we tested 49 child sexual offenders and 46 non-offender controls on their ability to recognise facial expressions of emotion using photographs of both adults and children posing emotio

Abstract:
Sexual assault is a serious and prevalent crime in Canada, and the legal responses addressing this phenomenon represent a failure to truly understand its causes and harms. From the justice system’s first interactions with those affected by sexual assault to the highest levels of appeal, the legal system has shown an inability to conceptualise this offence as a systemic issue of oppression that is deeply connected to equality rights. This failure is well-illustrated in the sentencing decisions resulting from these cases: they are unpredictable, often justified using a variety of rape myths that

Abstract:
Sexual conflict is broadly defined as a conflict between the evolutionary interests of the two sexes. Depending on the genetic architecture of the traits involved, it can occur at the level of male-female interactions or take the form of selection acting to change the mean of a shared trait against the sign of its genetic correlation. The aim of my thesis was to use genome-wide expression profiles in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster to provide novel insights in the study of sexual conflict. First, we studied the female post-mating response to partition transcriptional changes associa

Abstract:
Sexual interactions play an important role in generating sexual selection and antagonistic co-evolution. These forces can shape differences between the sexes, but also have the potential to generate population divergence and contribute to speciation. The aim in this thesis was to provide new insights into the genes involved in different stages of female sexual interactions, using Drosophila as a model system. In chapter 2 I tested whether a candidate gene (period) that influences species-specific rhythmic characteristics in male courtship song in D. melanogaster also has a pleiotropic effect o
