Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the direction of the general offending–sexual assault relationship in young males transitioning from late adolescence to early adulthood. It was predicted that the path leading from general offending to sexual assault would be significant and the path leading from sexual assault to general offending would be non-significant. This hypothesis was tested in a convenience sample of 851 male college students using three waves of data. Four cross-lagged correlations were compared after controlling for race, relationship status, blame attributions, and precu

The cycle of violence thesis posits that early exposure to maltreatment increases the likelihood of later maladaptive and antisocial behaviors. Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) specifically has been shown to increase the likelihood of sexual offending, although less is known about its linkages to other forms of crime. Based on data from 2,520 incarcerated male juvenile offenders from a large southern state, hierarchical logistic regression models suggested that CSA increased the likelihood of later sexual offending nearly sixfold (467% increase). However, CSA was associated with an 83% reduced lik

Abstract:
This study was aimed at exploring the reasons why a group of men convicted of sexual offences against children desisted from further sexual offending. The research employed a qualitative methodology aimed at gaining a phenomenological understanding of participants' perceptions of the desistance process. A total of 32 participants were interviewed using a semi-structured life story interview. Data was analysed using thematic analysis, looking for commonalities across and within narratives. Theory was developed using a grounded theory methodology. The results show that desistance from sexual off

Abstract:
This thesis empirically examined the validity of Wortley and Smallbone’s (2006) offender x situation interaction typology of sexual offending, using a sample of male adolescent sexual offenders. Driven primarily by applied concerns with the situational prevention of sexual offending, this typology draws on the ideas that have emerged from interactional psychology to emphasise the interdependent influence of internal (dispositional) and external (situational) factors on sexual offending. It proposes the existence of three sexual offender types (‘Predatory’, ‘Opportunist’, and ‘Situational’), di

Supervision of sexual offenders can only work to reduce risk when it monitors and addresses factors related to both general and sexual recidivism. It is well known that many sexual offenders commit other types of offences, such as violent and general offending, but other types of offenders rarely commit sexual offences (Hanson & Bussiere, 1998). It is therefore necessary to distinguish sexual offenders from other offenders when we study the different recidivism types, and the key risk factors for the prediction of any reoffending. A progressive exploration of the role of personality in understanding offending in a child molester sample was undertaken. A particular focus was the extent to which the construct of personality could be used to reduce or account for some of the heterogeneity reported in this population. The studies used a sample of 110 participants in the Kia Marama treatment programme for sexual offenders against children. In the first of four studies these subjects were divided into four subgroups using cluster analysis of their scores on the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI) personality scales. T

The study of sex offenders has generated a substantial body of literature detailing their treatment, management, prevalence and effects. A limited amount of research has demonstrated the experiences of disclosure from the perspective of the offender. The study aimed to develop a model to understand how offenders manage disclosure. This study attempts to delineate the factors that influence their self-disclosure and explore the consequences for the offender, focusing on emotional well being, relationships and recidivism. Abstract:
This thesis focussed on online sexual offending, particularly the access of indecent images of children (IIOC), and whether certain risk factors associated with contact sexual offending, namely offence-supportive cognitions and deviant sexual interest (DSI), were relevant for individuals who access IIOC. In references to offence-supportive cognitions for IIOC offenders, the issue is unclear. Research indicates that IIOC offenders do not hold these distortions, whereas the narratives from IIOC offenders indicates that distortions do exist for them.
