Full textBy the end of the 19th century, medicine overwhelmingly took hold of the homosexual phenomenon, basing itself on new findings related to psychopathology. Not only were characters physically identified thanks to a series of so-called scientific criteria, but they were also analysed through mental mapping. Although the aim of the classification of sexual behaviours was to cure rather than punish, the practices of sexual minorities were still stigmatized. As far as the judiciary system was concerned, French laws were considered to be quite lenient in so far as homosexual relationships had no longer been regarded as offences since the 1810 penal code. Nevertheless, the distorted use of the affront to public decency enabled to control people's behaviours and, by the end of the century, an increase of the trials focusing on cases of indecent exposure could be noticed. Our work, that definitely ascribes itself within the field of Gender Studies and Queer theory, is first and foremost epistemological and seeks to analyze how a body of expertise about homosexuality emerged in the second half of the 19th century, through the medical corpus that turned out to be prevalent in the studies that were conducted then, as well as through both legal and literary texts, although they were quite overlooked then. Our analyses also pertain to the history of representations, as we offer to define the aesthetics of decadence by adding a signifier: homosexuality. Finally, we also plan on scrutinizing texts by relying on three main themes that are meant to emphasize the decadent use of a homotextuality : the symbol of flowers, the figure of the androgyne and the myth of Narcissus

Full textRussian literature was known until the last decade of the twentieth century for its «chasteness» and the modest way with which it approached sexual desire. It however experienced a serious upheaval in the 1990s, when Soviet censorship disappeared, and the country opened itself to market and Western liberal values. Eroticism then blossomed even in mainstream literature. But a quarter of a century later, sexual euphoria seems to have cooled down. The starting point of this study was an interrogation about how does contemporary Russian literature view sex, desire, and the rights of the flesh. It was developed along four main themes, representing fundamental concepts of the erotic tradition, which, however, take very particular shapes in the context of Russian culture, dominated by Orthodox view of the body and sexuality : thanatic Eros, on the connection between desire for life and for death, anti-procreative Eros, on the troubled relationship between sex and procreation, utopian Eros, which explores the role of sex in utopic projects, and hedonistic Eros, interested in sex outside of any utilitarian paradigm, except pleasure of the senses. We will try to evaluate how much and in what ways contemporary Russian writers still retain the traditional picture of Eros, body, and sex, how they strive to free themselves from it, and with what success. We hope that this study will contribute to foster more scholarly research on this subject, which is still quite underdeveloped in French-speaking countries

Full textTo reflect upon sexuality in the works of Sade and Fourier in space and time means not only to reflect upon the works of these authors while experimenting a literary comparison opting to bring them closer together, but also to examine the aspects of similitude and exchange throughout the long historical process of oppositions and fusions. What is the relationship between utopia and historical reality? I am proposing to study the regulatory dispositions or the regime regarding sexuality, which comprises an infinite variety of rhetoric, laws, emotions, morals, linking, as Michel Foucault believed, the observable with the articulated. While the dispositions make up reality, literary utopia is to be found on the fringes. This introduction is an initial founding step in my line of reasoning. It will be important to draw some points of reference between different logical approaches, between Sade and Fourier. Without neglecting the fundamental difference, historical and sociological, between Sade and Fourier and, even independently of the forms and the discourse that each one uses (novel or social system), my concern will be to characterize the specificity of each one while trying to identify the organic links between these two visions of the same problem: the enlightened, bourgeois citizen, close to the common people, belonging fully to the 19th century, the century of “ the man without qualities”, of the pleb, and that of Sade who is the great aristocrat conscious of his privileges by birth. Fourier reasons for "the collective, the masses. " Sade, even though with his peers he forms "societies," has only in mind the individual supreme. The angles at which each one approaches the problems of pleasure, of "happiness," of a better society, are not therefore absolutely identical. Even though they sometimes meet up, they maintain points of divergence, even though they both illustrate the imagination and the utopian way of thinking that unites them

Full textSince the late sixties and the "sexual liberation movements", representations of virginity have evolved. Women have struggled against this moral and cultural order governing their sexuality. However, without diminishing the importance of the meaning given to this entry into sexuality. The spread of contraception has allowed girls to free themselves from the fear of unwanted maternity. Thus, for forty years, girls and boys have started their sexuality at equivalent ages, that is to say at 17 (BRUIT-ZAIDMAN, HOUBRE, KLAPISCH-ZUBER, SCHMITT-PANTEL, 2001). Since the mid-twentieth century, there has been a privatization of the conditions of entry into sexual life. It becomes a subjective experience, structuring, surrounded by doubts and fears as to the consequences of this choice. However, it remains an important event (BOZON, 2012). Lost in this society advocating individuality, young people would no longer stable benchmarks. According to the media, teenagers have deviant sexual practices. The media believes that young people experience their entry into sexuality in a miserable way. Each year, television channels offer their audience, reports, series that show the malaise, or even the malaise of young people face their sexuality. Pornography would be part of their daily lives, they would have no form of reflexivity in front of these images and would be credulous. They would imagine this sexuality as the reality. In the same way, they would become actors of amateur pornographic production, filmed using their mobile phone. The exit from childhood would be extremely violent, torn from innocence because of this bestial and unhealthy sexuality (LEVASSEUR, 2009). It is thus necessary to deconstruct these representations of juvenile sexuality, to free oneself from these alarmist discourses, in order to understand how young people experience their first sexual experiences, but also to determine the information they have before this first time. Statistical data offer only partial information concerning the conditions of entry into the sexuality of young people (LAGRANGE, LHOMOND, 1997) (BAJOS, BOZON, 2008), hence the need to opt for a qualitative method. tying to understand the individual logics. The aim of this thesis will be to understand which are the different actors involved in the transmission of knowledge about sexuality and how these speeches can be marked by norms relating to the conditions of entry into sexuality. In this way we will be able to determine if these normative injunctions have an influence in the representations and the first adolescent sexual experiences. To answer this problematic, this thesis work is divided into two distinct parts. The first part of this thesis deals with the transmission of knowledge about sexuality. We will try to see how knowledge about the sexual field is acquired through different socialization bodies (school, family, peers). In the second part of this thesis, we will analyze the stories of first sexual experiences. We will see to what extent the normative injunctions presented in the previous section have influenced the actual sexual practices of young people. To do this, we opted for a chronological approach. The study of sexual biographies shows a constant evolution of the representations of sexuality, which is why it seems to us indispensable in the second part of this thesis to take stock of the different stages of sexual life in adolescence, of to converse theoretical knowledge, sexual imaginations and actual sexual practices
