Full textBackground: Human immunodeficiency virus, HIV, is a virus that attacks the immune system of the body. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, AIDS, develops from HIV if it is left untreated. There is a lack of knowledge and fear in the community, which creates stigmatization and discrimination towards the disease. This is affecting those who are living with it daily. The attitude towards HIV-infected individuals is negative. Some nurses are not willing to care for persons with HIV because of fear and lack of knowledge. The diagnosis alters the person’s previous life and to deal with the disease is not easy. Aim: The aim was to describe how it is to live with HIV/AIDS in the Nordic countries. Method: The literature review was based on six quantitative and seven qualitative articles chosen to get a deeper understanding and an overview of knowledge about how it is to live with HIV/AIDS in the Nordic countries. Result: The analysis resulted in three categories that together formed an overview of the life with HIV/AIDS. These categories are; adjusting to a new life, keep secret or come out and limited sexuality. Stigmatization affected the individuals’ view of themselves and their decisions concerning disclosure. Conclusion: People living with HIV are often countered with ignorance, prejudice and distance, therefore the encounter is important. The literature review contributes with information and knowledge that can be used by health professionals to receive a deeper understanding for people living with HIV. Nurses should have knowledge about HIV/AIDS to be able to provide good care. Lack of knowledge and prejudices in the community was considered worse than the disease itself.

Full textThe aim of this literature review was to highlight women’s and their partner’s experiences of living with breast cancer. The method was a literature review according to Polit et al (2001); based on ten scientific articles. The theoretical frame of references was Carnevalis (1999) model, Everyday Life - Functional state of health. The result showed four themes and several sub themes that describes the fact of living with breast cancer from the women’s and the partner’s point of view. The themes were; physical, psychological, social and existential experiences. The results can increase the nurse’s understanding and knowledge for these women’s and their partner’s experiences regarding the disease. This can increase the nurse’s knowledge about how important the individual support is to the patient and the relatives.

Full textSexuality is a central part of life among people in general. What happens to sexuality when a person suddenly acquires a brain injury as a result of severe illness or an accident? The focus at primary rehabilitation concerns more obvious functions which are aimed to make the person more independent in daily life. Questions about the personal experience of how the brain injury has affected identity as a male or female, and questions about sexuality can therefore be neglected. A review of earlier studies shows that sexuality is affected among persons who have acquired a brain injury. Sexuality can be seen as constructed both on intra psychic and interpersonal level, and script theory can be used to analyze changes in experiences of sexuality. AIMS: The aim of the current study was to illuminate the personal perspective of sexual changes among persons who had acquired a brain injury. Has the brain injury resulted in changes of the experienced sexual life, and if so how did the person manage these? Methods: In the current study nine people, both women and men were interviewed. The participants aged between 25 and 64 years had acquired a brain injury at the age between 16 and 55. All participants had acquired the brain injury for more than one year ago, and all had participated in a rehabilitation program at Skåne University Hospital. Results: Changes in sexuality was seen in relation to common consequences of brain injury such as fatigue and difficulties concerning concentration. Changes also appeared in relation to the ability to achieve erection, lubrication and orgasm (the intrapsychic level). There were also changes at the interpersonal level for example role changes in the relationship. All changes were managed in different ways by the participants including different coping strategies. Not all coping strategies were efficient for the person. Conclusions: Sexuality can be seen as a vital part of the rehabilitation process and therefore rehabilitation programs including sexuality should be developed. Partners’ perspective should also be considered.

Full textLövdén Brefelt, S. Parenting and sexuality. A study of parents' experiences of common sexual life. Master in sexology 30 credits. Malmö University: Health and Society, 2012. This is a qualitative descriptive study designed to examine parents' experiences of common sexual life and their view of how sexuality is portrayed in the public domain. Empirical research is based on semi-structured interviews with eight women and three men who live with a partner and children aged 4-16 years. The analysis is based primarily on the theoretical concepts of sexual scripts (Simon & Gagnon, 1999), reflexivity (Giddens, 1992) and individualization (Beck & Beck-Gernsheim, 1990; 1998). The results show that the respondents are struggling with the individualistic society's demands on reflexivity and the ideals of creating a good enough sexuality. This is both a freedom and an obligation, with uncertainty about the rapid changes and sexualization in the media. The respondents express a gender aspect; the man is the one who is seen as the most sexual. Individualization in society requires planning of everyday life and it is sometimes difficult to see sexuality as the everyday action one wishes. Planning for sex or catching spontaneous opportunities are two different strategies. Communication and problem-solving skills are important for the respondents who all live in relationships that have lasted long. Nevertheless, there is a fear of infidelity and separation. There is an awareness of the fact that today it is not obvious that a relationship lasts, but you have to work with it and here sexuality is important. There is also ambivalence between routinely everyday life and modernity that requires reflection and change. Full textBackground: Earlier research has shown that relations and sexual life has been affected after one of the partners has acquired a brain injury. There might be a discrepancy between the partners as to what is problematic in the relationship. Often the brain injury has caused the partner to take greater responsibility, therefore also a change in roles. Purpose and method: The purpose of the study is to show how partners to people with brain injury experience their relationship, with focus on the sexual life. The study is based on eight individual’s interviews with partners to people who have acquired a brain injury in their adult life. Results: The overall results show that the brain injury has affected the couple’s daily life. Most said that their sexual life had also been affected, both the mutual and the partners own sexuality. There are different ways to cope with this. A balancing act was shown between a person’s individual needs and the needs of the partner. Two different points of view were expressed about the sexual life. On the one hand sexual activities were seen as something spontaneous, on the other hand, like so many other things, it needed planning.
