Full textThe aim of this study is to examine the attitudes, experiences and competence of social workers regarding the work towards boys, girls and non-binary youth, below the age of 18, who are selling sexual services. The study also aims to examine how comfortable social workers are while working with this subject. The study was conducted with a quantitative web-based poll where social workers, who were members of the Facebook-group “Socionom” specifically for social workers, had the opportunity to answer questions regarding youths who sell sexual services. The results of the poll were later statistically tested and analyzed by using previously conducted research around youths who sell sexual services, and by using a structural organizational perspective. Youths who sell sexual services are exposed to high risks and poor mental health both during- and after the experience of selling sexual services. The results of the poll indicate that the most important aspect of working with this subject is depending on how comfortable the social worker feels having discussions with the youths regarding sexual health, while consensus show that social work-education, according to the respondents, does not prioritize or give lectures regarding youth who are selling sexual services or their sexual health. The results also show that the respondents to a higher degree suspect female clients are selling sexual services than boys or non-binary, even though previous research show that boys are selling sexual services to a higher degree. Most of the respondents also specify that they are not aware of any current guidelines at their current workplace regarding youths who are selling sexual services, and that there is variance in how comfortable the respondents feel working with this subject.

Full textIntroduction: Sweden has since 1999 a prostitution legislation that prohibits sex purchase. Focus has shifted towards the buyer in prostitution. Apart from the criminalization of sexual purchase actions to reduce prostitution pointed at the buying part is highlighted. One of the available actions is psychotherapy. The objective of the study is to increase the knowledge about psychotherapy focused on males that purchase sexual services from the experience of psychotherapists treating them. Question: How do psychotherapists experience psychodynamic psychotherapy with men who buy sexual services? Method: A qualitative method with a descriptive and explorative onset has been used. Seven psychotherapists that work with or have worked with men that purchase sexual services have been interviewed. The transcribed material has been analyzed using thematic analysis. Result: The result of the study is presented with four themes with the balancing act as an overall theme; Understanding with sub-themes explanation models and approaches; Contempt with sub-theme disgust; Seduction and The crime. Discussion: The results are discussed from the perversion concept. Countertransference emotions of contempt and disgust agree with earlier studies and theories. The theme of seduction is discussed from the perspective that it is shameful for a psychotherapist to feel seduced or attracted and beguiled in relation to the patients. The line between accepting and pathologizing the illegality and the abnormal behavior is discussed.

Full textThis essay is based on qualitative interviews with people who are selling sexual services on the internet. The aim of the essay was to find out how these people experience and how they reason about their safety regarding sexwork. I also wanted to know if certain meeting points were seen as more safe than others while meeting the customers, if they had any safety strategies and if they had sold sex on other places than via the internet. The essay revealed different safety strategies among the sex workers, partly about where they prefer to meet the customers, but also the pre-work some are doing before meeting the customers. The essay has showed that the feeling of safety is very individual, as well as where one prefer to meet the customers, what kind of safety-strategies one has, and what thoughts one has about victimhood.

Full textSex trafficking has existed for a long time and has always been considered problematic in various ways. Since 1999, the purchase of sex has been prohibited by law (SFS 1962: 700, Chapter 6, Section 11) and is considered by the government as part of men's violence against women and men's superior position in society. New figures from the public health authority shows that one in ten men in Sweden have paid for a sexual act. Despite the fact that the sex trade has both a selling and a buying side, the research has mostly been one-sided and focused on the people who sell, which has led to the buying side being relatively unexplored. Media, on the other hand, sheds light on both sides of the subject, which gives them power to influence society's view of sex buyers. At the same time, the media is to a large extent influenced by social policy and reflects the current power structures. The purpose of this paper is therefore to examine how the media portrays sex buyers and how the sex purchase discourse reflects both gender norms and gender-related power structures. The theoretical perspective is based on Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis and radical feminist theory. With Fairclough's three-dimensional model I have examined and analyzed 153 articles from Dagens Nyheter and Aftonbladet between 1 January 2018 and 31 May 2020. The study shows that four different sub-discourses can be distinguished in the discourse about sex buyers in media: (1) anonymization of men who buys sex and the reference to them as "ordinary" men, (2) the description of them as predators, perpetrators and conscienceless, (3) portraying sex buyers as victims and also provide space for compassion and (4) use of market discourse. The analysis also shows that different discourses reflect gender norms and current power structures to varying degrees, where some even act challenging and follows the law and the radical feminist perspective on sex purchases.

Full textThe aim of the study is to explore how purchasers of sexual services describe and explain their behavioural patterns, with a focus on their intimate relations and everyday life. Data was collected in semi-structured interviews with nine male participants who purchase sexual services and are currently in a relationship. Using a qualitative method, a poststructuralist research approach was applied. The empirical findings were analysed within theoretical frameworks and viewpoints based on modernity theories, encompassing various forms of commercialization and commodification of intimate relations. The principal results of the study present an idea of what functions the purchases of sexual services fulfil for the participants, how the purchases are organized and carried out, and how the behaviour affects their attitudes towards current partners and relations. Furthermore, the results give an understanding of how purchases of sexual services relate to private and commercial sexuality, what concerns the participants have for applicable Swedish legislation, and what moral values they hold regarding purchases of sexual services. On individual, relational and structural levels, the analysis shows how the participants navigate and negotiate around various aspects of intimacy and consumption in connection to purchases of sexual services outside a current relation.
