Abstract:
This paper presents an edited version of a hand written text in Shaba Swahili and French, accompanied by an English translation. The original text was written in ballpoint by a Shaba Zairean ex-houseboy, and sent to his former employer in Belgium It provides an account of his life, with special focus on the period after his Belgian employers left Zaire in 1973. It documents the conditions of hardship in the life of a semi-educated Zairean and provides a detailed account of the migrations he has to undertake in order to find means to support himself and his family. The author Wiote the `recit` at the request of the former employer`s wife, as a symbolic way to repay the debt he had incurred over the years in which he had received money and other goods from the Belgian lady. The text was sent to me by the former employer, who asked me to translate it into Dutch. The former employer granted me the permission to edit and publish the text in its totality. For reasons of privacy, we decided to alter the names of the people mentioned in the text. Thus, for instance, the employer is named Andni Deprins, his wife (who is the central addressee of the text) Helena Arens, and the author of the text is identified as Julien.

Abstract:

Abstract:

info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Abstract:
info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Abstract:

Rarely in the african history, many interventions and rivalries happened in one country. Abstract:
The Upper Proterozoïc Shaba of Zaire constitues a great sedimentary and volcanic sedimentary complex suddivides in two parts : a southeastern folded arc (Shaba arc) and northeastern subtabularies beds. The detailed analysis of these faulted formations from Roan to lower Kundelungu age has shown they belonged to intracontinental rift in extension. It gives some structural units : tilted blocks and horsts with reef and tidalite facies, subsiding area (Fungurume) and coastal basins and lagoons (Musonoi, Kipushi) with confined sediments, turbidite sandstone facies (Upper Mwashya), tillitic deposits (Great Conglomerate), or evaporitic sequence sebkha facies. The latter has played an important role in the post brecciation of the sedimentary cover. The lithological and geographical distribution of the very important Cu-Co (Roan) and Cu-Zn (Lower Kundelungu) ore deposits and their qualitative and quantitative variations have been explained thanks to this model

Wylie, Dan. "White writers and Shaka Zulu." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002276.

Full text
Abstract:
The figure of Shaka (c. 1780-1828) looms massively in the historical and symbolic landscapes of Southern Africa. He has been unquestioningly credited, in varying degrees, with creating the Zulu nation, murderous bloodlust, and military genius, so launching waves of violence across the subcontinent (the "mfecane"). The empirical evidence for this is slight and controversial. More importantly, however, Shaka has attained a mythical reputation on which not only Zulu self-conceptions, but to a significant degree white settler self-identifications have been built. This study describes as comprehensively as possible the genealogy of white Shakan literature, including eyewitness accounts, histories, fictions and poetry. The study argues that the vast majority of these works are characterised by a high degree of incestuous borrowing from one another, and by processes of mythologising catering primarily to the social-psychological needs of the writers. So coherent is this genealogy that the formation of an idealised notion of settler identity can be discerned, especially through the common use of particular textual "gestures". At the same time, while conforming largely to unquestioning modes of discourse such as popularised history and romance fiction, individual writers have attempted to adjust to socio-political circumstances; this study includes four close studies of individual texts. Such close stylistic attention serves to underline the textually-constructed nature of both the figure of Shaka and the "selves" of the writers. The study makes no attempt to reduce its explorations to a single Grand Unified Explanation, and takes eclectic theoretical positions, but it does seek throughout to explore the social-psychological meanings of textual productions of Shaka - in short, to explore the question, Why have white writers written about Shaka in these particular ways?

It is one of the three rituals celebrated by jews on the day separated to rest e prays, where the songs and prays still can be heard on local synagogue. The search gathered informations from the Isaac Shachnick Synagogue, in the Centro Israelita de Pernambuco (CIP), and on the Synagogue Kahal Zur Israel Museum, the first synagogue of Brazil, where today is the Jewish Historian Archive of Pernambuco, where are preserved, ocasionally, the ceremonies of Shabat. Departing from the perspective of musical cultural study this work intend to understand the music as cultural behavior and verify the task of this religious practice to their fellowers, trying to situate the music in its sociocultural context. According to the local information, we have nearly 100 fellowers of the Shabat, what represent 10% of the jewish community in Recife. We not only registered the special repertorie sung on the local synagogues, but the study begins with the historic construction of the social group, going to the negociations of the permanencies e adaptation of the cultural traces, specially musical, until reach the reflection over the relevance of this religious tradition. After confirmed the close conection between shabatic music and the jewish identity, that helps to keep the ethical stability and the social union of the ethnical group, the work wants to contribute to the discussions about the ethnicity and the cultural behavior of Immigrant, reaching a more broad aspect, as the Social Science.

Abstract:
In the aftermath of a wave of land law reforms across Africa, this thesis seeks to reorientate current debates on women's land rights towards a focus on the law in action. Since the 1970s Tanzania has been at the forefront of African countries giving statutory recognition to women's property rights and ‘equal rights' to land. Equally, ‘customary law' incorporating gender discriminatory social practices is recognised as a source of law in Tanzania's plural legal system. Centring on disputes involving women litigants in Tanzania's specialist system of land courts, this study considers the extent to which women are realising their interests in land through legal processes of dispute resolution. The starting-point for the analysis is the legal claims to land which women bring and defend themselves against in practice. The study draws upon a year of ethnographic fieldwork, including courtroom observation, archival research and interviews conducted between January 2009 and January 2010, with particular focus on two districts of Arusha region. The thesis is structured to reflect the progression of women's claims to land, from their social origins through processes of dispute resolution to judgment. The thesis explores three central issues. Firstly, it considers the nature of women's legal claims to land in family contexts, how and to what extent the issues raised are addressed by Tanzania's contemporary statutory legal framework. Secondly, it examines how agency and power relations between actors engaged in the ‘semiautonomous social field' of land courts affect women's access to justice and the progression of claims. Thirdly, it evaluates the process of doing justice and the way in which women's claims are judged by land courts in practice. Particular attention is paid to how customary practices and judicial attitudes to female land-holding are evolving with contemporary Tanzanian discourses of justice and equal rights.

Abstract:
As more organisations are expanding in their operations, there has been a strong emphasis on investing in Information Systems (IS). To ensure successful deployment of IS, software developers are advised to apply Information Systems Development Methodologies (ISDMs). The ISDMs provide a systematic approach to development of IS and ensure efficient use of resources during the development process. The stakeholders conducting the software development usually face problems communicating Systems Development (SD) terminologies. The software developers inconsistently use the SD terminologies during software development. Recently a new concept called ontology has been gaining a lot of popularity in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Computational Lingnistics and Database theory. Ontology'S potential is being realized in its ability to capture knowledge into a knowledge-base that could be shared with people within a particular domain area. This study aims at helping the software developers in understanding the different types of terminologies applied when conducting software development. The main objective is to develop an ontology for Information Systems Development Methodologies. The ontology will be used to mediate the meaning ofterminologies of SD. In cases where the development of software is undertaken through outsourcing, the software developers located in different countries can use a similar ontology in order to minimise the misunderstanding in the application of systems development terminologies during the development process. To determine the terminologies to use in the development of the ontology, a qualitative research approach was used. The research is regarded qualitative, as the information gathered for this research will not be expressed in numbers. The research paradigm employed in this research in interpretive in nature. To gather the data, both primary and secondary data collection strategies were employed. Data was gathered through document review and it was coupled with interviews conducted on a software development practitioner and three academics. After the data was collected, it was analyzed using the agreed upon terminologies. The ontology was then developed using a software package called Protege. The study found that software developers still have a misunderstanding on the use of SD terminologies. By developing an ontology for Information Systems Development Methodologies, the software developers can use the ontology to mediate the meaning of the SD terminologies that would minimize the misunderstanding of systems development terminologies when conducting software development.
Thesis (M.Sc. Kaladzhyan, Vardan. "Spin polarisation and topological properties of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states." Thesis, Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017USPCC215/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In this manuscript we first revisit the physics of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov subgap states, focusing on their spin polarisation. We start by showing theoretically that we can extract a considerable amount of information about the host superconductor, by analysing spin-polarised local density of states related to the presence of magnetic impurities. First, we demonstrate that the spin-orbit coupling in two-dimensional and one-dimensional systems, both superconducting and metallic, can be read-off directly and unambiguously via spin-resolved STM. We analyse the impurity-induced oscillations in the local density of states. In particular, we focus on the Fourier transform (FT) of the Friedel oscillations and we note that high-intensity FT features appear at a wave vector given by twice the inverse spin-orbit length. Second, in unconventional superconductors with both s-wave and p-wave pairing, by analysing the spin-resolved spectral structure of the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states it is possible to determine the dominating pairing mechanism. Most strikingly, we demonstrate that a careful analysis of spin-polarised density of states allows not only to unambiguously characterise the degree of triplet pairing, but also to define the orientation of the triplet pairing vector, also known as the d-vector.Finally, we discuss two different ways of engineering and controlling topological phases with both scalar and magnetic impurities. We start with providing a microscopic theory of scalar impurity structures on chiral superconductors. We show that given a non-trivial chiral superconductor, the scalar impurities give rise to a complex hierarchy of distinct non-trivial phases with high Chern numbers. Second, we propose and study theoretically a new promising platform that we call 'dynamical Shiba chain', i.e. a chain of classical magnetic impurities in an s-wave superconductor with precessing spins. We have shown that it can be employed not only for engineering a topological superconducting phase, but most remarkably for controlling topological phase transitions by means of magnetisation texture dynamics. This manuscript is organised as follows. In the first part, the essential introductory information on superconductivity, Friedel oscillations and Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states is provided. The second part is dedicated to spin polarisation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states and the properties that could be extracted by means of spin-resolved STM measurements. In the last part, two setups proposed for topological phase engineering based on impurity-induced states are presented, followed by conclusions with a brief summary of the thesis achievements and further directions to pursue

Abstract:
The research undertaken since 1975, on the urbanism and fortifications of Shabwa, capital of the Kingdom of Hadhramawt (Yemen) between the IVth BC and the Vth AD, allows a better understanding of the relationships between the occupation of the town, the domestic architecture and the three lines of curtain-walls. The first one enclosed the “intra-muros” town with its high-status buildings, originally constructed on a flat site. The area of 15,5 ha is enclosed by a wall of 1,6 km. The most ancient inscription found in the curtain wall dates from the VII th century BC. From the 7th/6th century B. C. This wall enclosed pre-existing independent, fortified structures, which have been grouped together since the 2nd millennium B. C. Dating of the mortars shows that they were present before the 4th century B. C. It then later expanded to include an important extra-mural building under the later royal palace, this latter only acquiring its status once it became part of the town. The second is lying within the line of the first. Its over-large wall-circuits of 3417 m, difficult to defend, do not seem to be designed to counter a specific threat but rather to repel brigands and nomads. Thus, this line protected herds and caravans in an area of 53,9 ha (37,1 of flat ground and 2,6 km of perimeter). Later still, the citadel, so far independent, became part of a third circuit which developed up to the valley, to the south. This new area of 3,7 ha is enclosed with a wall of 820 m

Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited.
This study evaluates the latest Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) version 4.0 with a comparison to data collected during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic (SHEBA) project from October 1997 to October 1998. In particular, three periods from this year long study were the focus and included, a winter, spring, and summer case. For each of these cases the first 24-hour period of the forecasts were analyzed for any bias and root mean square difference from the SHEBA data. NOGAPS had no significant biases in pressure and wind speed. During the winter case, the NOPGAPS surface temperature remained near -28 C while observed temperature varied in response to cloud cover changes and was lower by 5.3 C on the average. During the spring the NOGAPS temperatures had a steady increase from -11 C until reaching the melt season temperature of 0 C 11 days earlier than observed. As a result of too warm a surface and less downwelling longwave radiation, the net longwave flux cooling was greater than observed, by an average of -12.4 Wm-2. The NOGAPS net shortwave radiation was greater than observed by an average of 62 Wm-2 for spring and 22.6 Wm-2 for summer.
Lieutenant, United States Navy

Abstract:
Biotechnology is evolving to produce pharmaceutical proteins in plants. Plantbased pharmaceutical production creates concerns of exposure in an open environment and contamination of the food supply. Consequently, quantitative human health and ecological risk assessments were conducted for aprotinin, gastric lipase, and LT-B expressed in maize. A comparative, qualitative risk assessment was conducted for conventionally derived and plant-cell derived Newcastle disease virus vaccine. Effect and exposure scenarios were modeled for each quantitative risk assessment and each scenario was based on a tiered approach in which inadvertent exposure through ingestion were examined to determine a risk characterization of the plant-based pharmaceuticals. The qualitative Newcastle disease virus vaccine risk assessment characterized risks based on the potential exposures to the poultry being vaccinated, to humans administering the vaccine, and to non-target birds. For the human-health risk assessment, the dietary exposure evaluation model (DEEM) was used to estimate the inadvertent dietary intake of the pharmaceutical proteins in food. The ecological risk assessment used Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the exposure of each protein in maize for four receptor species. The human-health risk assessments revealed that the most conservative scenario produced higher risk quotients (RQ's) than the other two scenarios. The difference in risks was attributable to the differences in toxic endpoints of the proteins. Although the protein expressions and dietary consumption were assumed to be the same, dietary risks between the proteins varied by more than 56,000 times. The human-health risk assessment revealed that risks will vary dramatically and depend on factors such as the specific pharmaceutical protein, protein expression, and exposure scenarios. The assessments reinforced the need for case-by-case assessments. The ecological risk assessment demonstrated that risks will vary between species and between proteins, based primarily on differences in toxic endpoint and consumption rates. It shows the utility of probabilistic, quantitative risk assessment methodologies and supports the human dietary risk assessment by demonstrating the importance of assessing risks from plant-based pharmaceuticals on a case-by-case basis. The qualitative assessment illustrated that fewer effects and contamination issues were associated with the use of the plant-cell derived Newcastle disease virus vaccine compared to conventionally derived vaccines.

Abstract:
A magnetic impurity embedded in a superconductor (SC) can have a disruptive effect on superconductivity, locally reducing the pairing energy of Cooper pairs and leading to the generation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) sub-gap states around it. The exchange interaction between the spin at the impurity and the electrons at the medium favors a Kondo-screening singlet configuration, while superconducting correlations oppose to the formation of a screening cloud, leaving the impurity unscreened in a doublet state. The local ground state (GS) of the system is then determined by the complex interplay between both phenomena, giving rise to intriguing properties that have been subject of great interest over the last decade.Hybrid devices contacting quantum-dot (QD) structures to superconducting leads offer an ideal platform for the study of such competition, as QDs can also display a magnetic character for odd occupancies. In this thesis, we investigate the transport properties of colloidal QDs (metallic nanoparticles and fullerenes) individually contacted to bare aluminum leads through tunnel barriers made by electromigration, in a transistor configuration. The combination of a strongly discretized density of states in colloidal QDs with the sharp gap present in superconducting aluminum allows to measure the YSR spectra, appearing in SC-QD-SC junctions displaying a large asymmetry in the tunnel coupling, with an unprecedented resolution. The response of the SC-QD system against gate voltage, external magnetic field and temperature has been characterized, identifying the transition point (QPT) from the singlet-GS phase to the doublet-GS. A striking upturn of the QPT gate position is revealed at low magnetic fields, attributed to the Zeeman-splitting of the doublet state

Abstract:
Master of Science
Food Science Institute
Daniel Y.C. Fung
The process of canning or “commercial sterilization” has been studied for more than two centuries. The first to develop canning as a defense against spoilage was Nicholas Appert also known as the “father of canning.” Appert invented a method of preservation by enclosing food in hermetically sealed containers and then heating containers to boiling temperatures for a specific period of time. The canning preservation method has changed over the years, and continues to change for the better. Technology for retorts, or processing vessels, has grown from the traditional steam heating medium to also include water and steam/water spray heating mediums. The once static vessels, now utilize rotation and shaking motions to decrease process time and in turn increase product quality. The product packaging has also evolved to include not only rigid metal containers, but semi-rigid and flexible plastic containers. The variety of packaging adds greater flexibility to the type of food products that can be produced in a shelf stable manner. Canning or “commercial sterilization” is still used today by the food industry as a method of providing safe food with extended shelf life. Today’s goal of commercial sterilization is to continue to produce safe food products that are high in quality and profitable to produce. A variety of processing equipment is available to accomplish those goals, ranging from a basic steam retort to the newest technology on the market known as Shaka. This new retort technology uses reciprocal agitation to shorten processing times and increase the quality of the final products. Studies have shown that the Shaka process reduces processing times better than 20-fold compared to a still process and better than 10-fold compared to a rotary process. As the field of thermal processing continues to evolve, the challenge will be to consistently produce safe, commercially sterile food that exceeds current quality expectations in a shorter process time while using less energy. Shaka, and other new technologies, will help the food industry meet these challenges and expectations by expanding the current capabilities of thermal processing to meet consumer demands.

Abstract:
Departing from three Classical Yiddish short stories that have been translated to Portuguese - Mendele Moikher Seforim\'s Sabbath, Itzhok Leibusch Peretz\'s The Reader and Scholem Aleichem\'s The clock - this dissertation aims to investigate the impact of modernity on literary representations of the Sabbath. The analysis of these writings will be conducted by comparing them to each other, highlight the differences in modes of representation on a same religious event. The biographies of these authors were extremely relevant to understand their work, since they expressed the ideals of Haskalah in their literary texts, through their reliable narrators. These authors have masterfully included in their production the dichotomized concept of tradition versus modernity in their texts, in order to illuminate the life of the shtetl community from within, and to portray the ways of thought of the simple Jew, while aiming at turning him into a modern man. Aware of their social roles, Abramóvitsh, Rabinovitch and Peretz have used Yiddish language and the culture of the Eastern European Jewish to establish a new era for the Yiddish culture and literature.

Borengasser, Daniel. "The Presence of the Buddha: Transmission of Sacred Authority and the Function of Ornament in Seiryōji's Living Icon." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/18410.

Abstract:
In 985, a Japanese monk named Chōnen commissioned a statue of Śākyamuni Buddha during a pilgrimage to China, which was later enshrined in the temple Seiryōji near Kyoto, Japan. The statue was lavishly ornamented both on its exterior and interior and came to be considered a "living icon" modeled after the legendary first portrait of the historical Buddha made under the patronage of the Indian king Udāyana. Through a holistic examination of historical context, textual evidence, and the diverse forms of ritual adornment (shōgon), I argue that the Seiryōji statue was designed to function as a field for the perpetual generation of karmic merit (fukuden). This statue, through the careful selection of inserted objects and their resonance with its external appearance, embodies the multiplicity of the "Buddha body" as the "living" body of the historical Śāyamuni and the eternally present Buddha of the Lotus Sutra.
