Green, Heather F. "Casting no shadow : overlapping soilscapes of European-Indigenous interaction in northern Sweden." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/13133.

Full text
Abstract:
The Sámi’s past activities have been documented historically from a European perspective, and more recently from an anthropological viewpoint, giving a generalised observation of the Sámi, during the study period of AD200-AD1800, as semi-nomadic hunter gatherers, with several theories suggesting that interaction with Europeans, through trade, led to the adoption of European activities by certain groups of the Sámi (Eiermann, 1923; Paine, 1957; Manker and Vorren, 1962; Bratrein, 1981; Mathiesen et al, 1981; Meriot, 1984). However, there is almost no information on the impact the Sámi had on the landscape, either before or after any adoption of European activities, and none investigating what cultural footprint or indicators would remain from Sámi or European occupation and/or activity within the typically podzolic soils of Northern Sweden. Consequently the thesis aims to contribute to the gap in knowledge through the formation of a podzol model identifying the links between anthropogenic activity and the alteration of podzol soils, and through the creation of soils based models which identify the cultural indicators associated with both Sámi and European activity; formed from the identification of cultural indicators retained within known Sámi and European sites. The methods used to obtain the information needed to achieve this were the pH and magnetic susceptibility from bulk soil samples and micromorphological and chemical analysis of thin section slides through the use of standard microscopy and X-ray fluorescence from a scanning electron microscope. The analysis revealed that the Sámi had an extremely low impact on the landscape, leaving hard to detect cultural indicators related to reindeer herding in the form of reindeer faecal material with corresponding phosphorous peaks in the thin section slides. The European footprint however, was markedly different and very visible even within the acidic soil environment. The European indicators were cultivation based and included phosphorous and aluminium peaks as well as a deepened, highly homogenised plaggen style anthropogenic topsoil rich in ‘added’ materials. An abandoned European site which visibly and chemically shows the formation of a secondary albic horizon within the anthropogenic topsoil also provides an insight into the delicate balance of cultivated soil in northern Sweden, whilst reinforcing the outputs identified in the podzol model. Due to the almost invisible Sámi footprint on the landscape, areas of overlap were impossible to identify however, there was no evidence of the adoption of European cultivation activities at any of the Sámi sites investigated. The only known area of interaction between the two cultures was an official market place which had been a Sámi winter settlement prior to its use as a market site. This site showed none of the reindeer based Sámi indicators or the cultivation based European indicators, but did contain pottery fragments which could be linked to trade or occupation. Overall, the thesis reinforces the low impact expected of the semi-nomadic Sámi and sheds light on the underlying podzolic processes influencing the anthropogenically modified soils of Northern Sweden. The podzol model is reinforced by several findings throughout the thesis and the soils based cultural indicator models for both Sámi and European activity have been successfully tested against independent entomological and palynological data and therefore provide reliable reference material for future studies.

Freh, Fuaad Mohammed. "In the shadow of terror : an exploration of post traumatic stress disorder, attachment styles and coping strategies : response to the experience of being in a bombing attack among Iraqi people." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/1488.

Full text
Abstract:
Despite the widespread prevalence of bombing in Iraq, no study has investigated its psychological impact on civilians. This thesis aimed to address this gap in the literature. Four studies were conducted consequently using civilians in Iraq. The first study aimed to explore the subjective experience in response to the bombing attack. A qualitative approach was taken and twenty semi-structured interviews were employed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). This identified seven categories including interpersonal relationships, loss of self, changes in attachment, shattering of world assumptions. Subsequent studies were then conducted to understand these themes as possible predictors of PTSD and psychiatric comorbidity in regards to bombing attacks. The second study was a prospective longitudinal design aimed to investigate the trajectory of PTSD symptoms, psychiatric comorbidity, and attachment styles among survivors. It also aimed to examine the role of a variety of variables, namely shattering of world assumptions, altered self-capacity, perceived social support to predict PTSD and psychiatric comorbidity. One hundred and eighty Iraqi civilians were recruited and assessed approximately 1 month and 5 months after their experience of being in a bombing attack using a battery of questionnaires. A control group data (n=178) of people who had not been exposed to a bombing was also collected. Results indicated that 19.4% and 57.2% of the participants met the screening criteria for partial and full PTSD symptoms at T1, which declined overtime. The bombing group displayed significantly higher rates of psychiatric comorbidity and insecure attachment than the control group. After controlling for the severity of bombing attack, controllability of events and affect dysregulation significantly predicted both PTSD and psychiatric co-morbidity symptoms. None of these dimensions predicted PTSD and psychiatric co-morbidity at T2. The complementary study 3 looked further at selected predictors indicated by the findings of study 1, namely death anxiety, coping strategies, religious coping and meaning in life. This study employed a longitudinal design in which 185 participants were recruited and assessed approximately 2 months and 7 months after bombing using a package of self-report questionnaires. Results indicated that religious coping and cognitive avoidance had a significant role to play in predicting PTSD and psychiatric comorbidity shortly after the bombing. Death anxiety was also emerged another picture in predicting PTSD and psychiatric comorbidity through mediators, namely religious coping and searching for meaning in life. Literature showed that PTSD and psychological distress are treatable after people had received various forms of professional and personal strategies. Study 4 employed mixed methods in order to provide further understanding regarding the helpful coping strategies that participants had attempted to use to manage their psychological distress. Six participants (n=3 recovered well, n=3 still struggle) were recruited for the qualitative phase and 243 for the quantitative. Social support was found as the most frequent and helpful strategy to manage post-bombing distress, followed by avoiding thinking about the bombing and religious strategies. Different psycho-social factors that hinder or foster recovery between participants were also highlighted. In conclusion, the findings confirmed related studies that, following bombing, there is a high risk that victims develop PTSD and psychiatric co-morbidity symptoms which decline to some extent over time. A variety of factors, such as social support and religious strategies were identified as helpful. However, these were also related to the victims’ prior attachment strategies. Implications for assisting victims and the population of Iraq are offered, in particular the need to support families and friends (social networks) in the context of very limited professional sources of support in a country where terrorism is rife.

Puente, Aurelio. "Jonestown: Recovering Peoples Temple from Jim Jones’s Shadow." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2016. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/1404.

Abstract:
Often we see examples of what makes a great leader, yet overlook examples of dark leaders. This thesis explores how dark leaders don’t necessarily draw in blind followers, but rather abuse their power in order to build their vision. In my study of Jonestown I show that followers were genuine in their feelings about Jones as a person and the Peoples Temple’s mission. They should not be dismissed just because they “drank the Kool-Aid.” This thesis explores and evaluates various religious studies theories and their interpretation of the events, popular perceptions, and personal statements from the deceased or surviving members. I conclude that Jones was a revolutionary leader during his time. He tried to achieve equality in the U.S. on multiple platforms, but was ultimately too attracted by power and control. In the end, this matters because given the state of the world today and the rise of dark leaders both through political offices, terrorist groups and other places, we need to have a way to not only protect ourselves from joining them, but also preventing them.

Hatton, Amanda. "Shallow democracy : in other people's shoes - listening to the voices of children and young people." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.575146.

Abstract:
In recent years there has been much interest in children's participation on an international and national level, based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and children's rights expressed ethically, morally, and legally. This culture of listening and viewing how children and young people participate in our changing world has been the focus of research, theoretical and political discourses, and debates. After reviewing the underpinning literature, this thesis examines and compares the reality of participation from data collected and analysed in three "stories of practice" (Eide and Winger, 2005:79). The main focus of my research was to explore how children and young people's voices were represented through multimodal methods as a means of participation. Researching three different "stories from practice" (Eide and Winger, 2005:79) I reflect on the issues of participation and the use of creative arts and media over a range of different settings, and the ways in which children and young people are consulted. This includes a consultation project of a local authority safeguarding children's board, a Creative Partnership project in a pupil referral unit, and a discussion with a group of young people who have experienced participation. The first two projects observed young people 'participating' in adult initiated activities and the third asked young people directly how they felt about their experiences and issues around participation. I examined the three different stages of my research drawing on the Mosaic approach (Clark and Moss, 2001), using a mixed methodology incorporating a range of qualitative data. The main findings of this research critically engage with recent debates and concepts surrounding participatory practices and methods, which ask whose agenda is being served, whose voice is being heard, and what is the purpose of participation. often leading to tokenism rather than participation being more inclusive for young people. The recommendations for practice that emerge are based on what the young people in the last stage of my research raised as being issues, where they had found that the process of participation had not been meaningful. Their main concerns were that practitioners should give more consideration to the way they communicate with children and young people; that they should actively listen; and most importantly to respond and be honest about how the young people's views will be used, and what changes they will affect.

Abstract:
This text demonstrates that my work on young people who are exploited through prostitution and young people involved in problematic drug use in Britain at the end ofthe twentieth and beginning ofthe twenty-first century constitutes a significant contribution to advancing our knowledge ofthese inter-related issues. The text demonstrates that, in Britain, at the end of the twentieth and beginning ofthe twenty-first century, young people exploited through prostitution and young people involved in problematic drug use share in common lived experiences in poverty at the margins of society. The common theme demonstrated here is that, as a result ofthe poverty generated by social and economic policies adopted in Britain in response to gIobalisation, 'street cultures' play an important role in the development and maintenance of survival strategies adopted by socially marginalised and economically disadvantaged young people. The discussion argues that these cultures perform important functions in time and space for socially and economically marginal young people. They do so in different ways for different young people. At the same time, however, they serve to further entrench their social and economic exclusion and disadvantage.

Abstract:
Undersökningen görs kvalitativt, och utgår ifrån främst Normal People men även Fifty Shades-trilogin.

Abstract:
This study seeks to explore variations in the development of racial identities for multiracial Virginians in the 21st century by focusing on the roles that physical appearance, group associations and social networks, family and region play in the process. Simultaneously, this study seeks to explore the presence of autonomy in the racial identity development process. Using Michael Omi and Howard Winantâ s racial formation theory as the framework, I argue that a racial project termed biracialism, defined as the increase in the levels of autonomy in self identification, holds the potential to contribute to transformations in racial understandings in U.S. society by opposing imposed racial categorization. Through the process of conducting and analyzing semistructured interviews with mixed-race Virginia Tech students I conclude that variations do exist in the identities they develop and that the process of identity development is significantly affected by the factors of physical appearance, group associations and social networks, family and region. Furthermore, I find that while some individuals display racial autonomy, others find themselves negotiating between their self-images and societyâ s perceptions or do not display it at all. In addition to these conclusions, the issues of acknowledging racism, the prevalence of whiteness, assimilation and socialization also emerged as contributors to the identity development process for the multiracial population.

Abstract:
Few students of History understand the derivation and/or origin of the Gqunukhwebe oath "Ndifung' uChungw' efel' ennyameni: I swear by Chungwa who is lying dead at Mnyameni (Alexandria)." A desire to eludicate this point and other related facts inspired me to undertake a close examination of the history of the Gqunukhwebe people, selecting as my main theme the life-work of Chief Kama. In the first chapter I am discussing the creation of the Gqunukhwebe Chiefdom under Khwane by the Xhosa King, Tshiwo. The central theme here is the Black-White confrontation of the 17th - 18th centuries on the Cape Eastern Frontier. As a result of the collision the Gqunukhwebe people were forced to make a home on the banks of the Thwecu River along the east coast. It was here that Kama reached early manhood. The second chapter describes the establishment of Wesleyville Missionary Station by William Shaw in 1823, the first Methodist Missionary Institution in all Xhosaland. In chapter three the discussion centers on the significance of Kama's conversion. An unforeseen outcome of his public profession of the Christian faith was that it not only stigmatized the latter religion as a force destructive of the old order in Xhosa society, but it also reshaped Kama's political image for the good of his religious life. He not only fled from the neighbourhood of his relations and sojourned in a strange land, but also reinforced the Colonial forces in the contemporary frontier struggles. His integrity, self-sacrifice and pro-Colonial inclination eventually won him Middledrift. Chapter four opens with Kama's settling in Middledrift. The theme here is two-pronged. It presents the 'Cattle-Killing' delusion as a source of new trials for the 'priest-chief', and at the same time exposes the Colonial Government's efforts to gain ascendancy above the Xhosa chiefs. Kama's land was the first testing ground in this respect, and the Chief was initially agreeable to the scheme. Chapter five alludes to instances of Chief Kama's unco-operative attitude as signs that his compromising spirit had its limits. An atmosphere of disregard towards Kama pervades the period. But the adversities that threatened to dominate his later life did not by any means shake his Christian principles and convictions. The traces of his good works may to this day be seen in Middledrift, the traditional home of the Kamas.

For nearly a century stretching from the early years of the Republic of China, the Japanese occupation to the retrocession of Taiwan, the ZHANGs worked relentlessly for their shadow show business. In order to demonstrate the so-called absent presence, origin of the traditional script and make the audience be used to watch the show the way people did in old days, the Donghua Shadow Show is making every effort to highlight interpretation and preserving old practices on one hand, on the other, the performance group tries to incorporate its solid essence in different stories arranged in a parallel way, a move that helps reform traditional theater resources by taking in country legends. Eventually, their dramas more attractive. At Donghua, absent presence, a main issue in the traditional Chinese Theater that many times turns out to be embarrassing and hard to deal with, is demonstrated in reformed literature of multiple meaning. Stories in the traditional scripts are written again by incorporating customs of Taiwanese people that help the shadow show carry aestheticism of old days and reflect practicality of present time. In this article, we try to figure out its narration approaches with traditional languages that reflect de confined existence of art. The other issue of study is the demonstration of literal performance in historic scenes. We are talking about artistic demonstration of the common people and materialization of history. According to publications of the Ministry of Education and theaters contributed by sound casting, it is determined that the Donghua Shadow Show is mainly to entertain its audience by following the artistic practices in market rules. Besides detailing changes in the profit-culture interactive system experienced by artists, sorting out culture propagation and brokerage behavior, Donghua highlights the art-generating area in contrast to the commercialized market. Fairy plays and performances required by religion are involved, just as the 3-in-1-religion phenomenon that is common in Taiwan and vivid in shadow shows. Fortunately, based on the schedule of performance, artists have come out with a time section for shadow show scripts without sense of time that fits scripts of both old and new stories. What does not change is people, that is to say, audience is key and history remains as it is. Literature meanings shall not be confined, nor should it be interpreted from the point of culture, the meanings change along with language scenes in the process of construction. Thus will make a shadow show an aesthetic demonstration by a new historian. Eventually, countless performances will reflect understandings and reconstruction of the original view of the script, including questions raised by the writer to the script and other areas involved in the reflection to the script. Understanding of the meaning of a work does not necessarily mean understanding of the nature of the script alone; it involves changes with time and making good use of leisure as a way of living. Amid play and story telling, Taiwan’s popular art performance is in a newly merged horizon. As performance of figures is key to the art of shadow show and sometimes it is more important than the script. Compared to the figurines on the wood engravings of early days, what makes the two common in artistic demonstration is a major issue in this article too. If shadow show were available in computerized animation, would it become more accessible to the youth? Could the 3D surface treatment giving shadow show additional depth be feasible? When such an issue is involved, we would then try to redesign shadow show with computerized animation. Just imagine the scene of a shadow figure in a 17th-Century stage with a large painting as background that deepens the stage itself, an engraving at the same time, the shadow figurines would be playing beyond light and shadow.

From 1984 to July 31, 2017 in Taiwan, the cumulative cases of HIV/AIDS were 36,070. The newly-diagnosed HIV/AIDS are increasing every year and tend to be younger. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) makes overall survival and survival rate increased. The people living with HIV/AIDS face with a lot of long-term adapting problems, such as medication side effects and stigma, their caregiver will also face with the dilemma of long-term care. In this study, we can understand the life narrative of the people living with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers, and interaction of each other. This study used the narrative approach, participants of people living with HIV/AIDS and their informal caregivers were invited to one-to-one and in-depth interviews to explore their life experience. In this study, purposive sampling for participants were used, a total of 12 participants. Data analysis were performed after data collection. This preparation consisted of placing a mark beside each line of text to denote both complete and incomplete sentences that were deemed important, and identify sentences that were similar. Similar ideas were then classified into groups, and the important ideas were analyzed to determine the core concepts and various theme. The study results showed that people living with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers undergo five themes: inability to speak to others about contracting HIV/AIDS, unable to give promise, isolating himself/herself from the world, condemnation from others for contracting HIV/AIDS, and having an unknown future. On the basis of these five themes, reconstructed the new story of the people living with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers. By understanding the life narratives of both people living with HIV/AIDS and their caregivers, both parties can help each other address and resolve problems deriving from living with HIV/AIDS. It is recommended that updated and correct information be provided to clinical medical personnel to ensure that accurate disease-related health education is offered to the public in a timely manner, with the goal of informing the public about the disease and destigmatizing HIV/AIDS. For the purposes of HIV infection controlled, encourge more people living with HIV/AIDS get out of the disease and received ART.

As time passes by, “Little People’s Shadow,” which exists in the past, the future and imagination, separates from and overlaps the moments, and continues in memories. In this course, the space where Little People lurks, winds in the order of history and time, and becomes the space of alienation. All the dwellings are too transitory to be counted in time, yet witness best the moment that people exists. Four chapters of this article respectively represent spaces of certain status. Moving from space A to space D is a process of mobility in four spaces. And these four chapters represent four of my artworks made in 2005-2009 namely “Maritime,” “Wen-gui,” “Coral” and “John’s township.” “Spaces” refer to the thoughts and actions which are before, within and after images but exclude themselves. And they do not refer to the artworks but the narratives of images. Thus, these four artworks can be read as a prologue of this article.

Roux, Gerrit Johannes Nieuwenhoudt. "Empowering destitute people towards shalom: a contextual missiological study." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1949.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis proposes that the destitute people of South Africa, and specifically Tshwane, comprise an often neglected group of people that can and must be helped by means of missions with the destitute to experience growing degrees of SHALOM. Part of this would include a drive to re-integrate the destitute into society as functioning members of that society. This is undertaken through developing a proposed model that strives to empower destitute people in a variety of ways, using a variety of "movements" and strategies. A model such as this is necessary in the light of the seeming inability of helpers (including churches, CBO's and other non-religious organizations), to come to grips with the complex problem of destitution in our country, and in Tshwane specifically. This perceived inability is addressed by exploring the problem of destitution, in the process seeking a better understanding of a complex problem, followed by considering the responsibility of the church as missiological agent of social healing and ministry. Missiologically, SHALOM is perceived as the aim/ goal of missions with the destitute, where SHALOM refers to wellbeing, justice, relational, completeness, whole-being, peace, etc. The model is intended to serve as a viable strategy in the arsenal of churches that take the missiological call towards social healing seriously, and to provide a comprehensive, holistic approach when dealing with the destitute. It is postulated that the church, more than any other organization, should enjoy an advantage when it comes to social ministry, because of two reasons, namely (1) a strong missiological point of departure as a motivation to be involved in social ministry, where we see the church as a partner in the Missio Dei, and (2) a strong missiological aim, namely SHALOM, which transcends mere charity or welfare, but seeks to empower people holistically.

Abstract:
Bolivia and Guatemala experienced a process of education reform in late 90's. Even though both countries had great international support to eliminate inequalities, especially among indigenous peoples, the domestic political contexts determined to what extent such changes were possible to make. In Bolivia the process started in 1994 with the signing of the Reform Law of Education, and in Guatemala in 1996 with the signing of the Peace Agreements. After more than two decades Bolivia and Guatemala present very different outcomes derived from their respective education reforms. This study is a comparison of them, an attempt to unveil the reasons why Bolivia has moved forward in terms of diversity, indigenous languages, and inclusion while Guatemala has apparently nullified the education reform process and remains in authoritarianism.

The vanishing point in image is an important parameter for estimating the focal length. Moreover, the camera focal length is important information to revert the absolute depth information in image. Hence, if the optimized vanishing point can be confirmed, the absolute depth information in image can be generated easily. In this thesis, a new method to estimate an optimized focal length and vanishing point in image is proposed. In previous approach, the vanishing point estimation focuses on finding the parallel lines in image or the head-feet position of a people in different frames. In proposed approach, the set of virtual shadows of a walking people has been created. Moreover, the length increment of the set of virtual shadows will be computed after the coordinate transformation, an optimized vanishing point can be obtained quickly by using a special iteration method. First, the walking people will be tracked and the leg-crossing posture of this people will be filtered in each frame, by using background subtraction process. Moreover, the projection vector is proposed to create a set of virtual shadows, in order to transfer the head-feet coordinates of these virtual shadows to World Image Coordinate System (WICS). A special relationship between the set of virtual shadows and the vanishing point in image has been found, which is the standard deviation of the set of virtual shadows will decrease, when the transformation point close to the optimized vanishing point. By using this special relationship, a special algorithm can be developed to approach the optimized vanishing point. The algorithm base on a range of focal length in general camera, which can defined a special iterative area. In addition, the increment of length of virtual shadows can be observed in this iterative region, than the corresponding vanishing point can be obtained. To sum up the conclusion, the Bisection iteration method and Sequential iteration method can be combined together to approach an optimized vanishing point. The feature of proposed approach is that the focal length information can be obtained use only one camera; additional calibration target won’t be needed. Moreover, the action trajectory of human is not limited. Besides, the low computational complexity features can be applying proposed approach to real-time surveillance systems.

Abstract:
Abstract in English and Zulu
This qualitative study set out to discover the lived experiences of South African transgender individuals within the liminal space of having been confirmed for gender affirming surgery, yet who have not completed their surgery. The aim included seeking out how participants’ wellbeing was affected by being within this liminal space. Six participants were recruited in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town. Thematic analysis was used to derive themes from the transcripts. Themes included coming out; relationships; wellbeing; misgendering/misnaming; support; public and private medical care; and liminality. Recommendations for future studies are included, and recommendations on interventions and support are discussed.
Lolu cwaningo lohlobo lwekhethelo lenzelwe ukuthola noma ukubheka izinselelo zabantu abafuna ukushintsha ubulili babo baseNingizimu Afrika ababhekana nazo uma basohlelweni lokuyohlinzwa ngoDokotela ukuze bakhone ukushintsha ubulili babo. Inhloso yalolu cwaningo ukubheka ngqo kubantu abayihambile lena ndima ukuthi bahlukumezeka kanjani ngesikhathi basohlelweni lokuthi bashintshe ubulili babo. Abantu abayisithupha abazibandakanye nalolu cwaningo batholakale eGoli, ePitoli kanye naseKapa. Kusetshenziswe ucwaningo olubheka indikimba ukuze kutholwe izihloko ezivele embalweni osuselwe enkulumeni eqoshiweyo. Izihloko ezivelayo yilezi, ubudlelwano; impilo; ukubizwa ngobulili ongasibona/ukubizwa ngegama okungasilona elakho; ukwesekwa; usizo lwezibhedlela zikahulumeni nezibhedlela ezizimele; kanye nokuba sesimeni sokushintsha ubulili. Izincomo zocwaningo oluzayo zifakiwe nazo, kuphindwe kwakhulunywa noma kwabhekwa ukuthi kungangenelelwa kanjani ngosizo.

Vermeulen, Floris Nicholas. "A Sikil interlude at Dor: an analysis of contrasting opinions." Diss., 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/1719.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper analyses the opposing views regarding the presence or absence of the Sikil at Dor in Palestine during Early Iron Age 1. Textual sources claim that the Sikil were pirates who came from the west and settled in Cyprus. Egyptian sources point to a Sikil presence at Dor. Some scholars regard the Egyptian sources and archaeological finds at Dor as evidence of a Sikil settlement at Dor. Others maintain that there is a continuity of ceramics at Dor from Canaanite to Phoenician. Though there were foreign influences at Dor during Early Iron Age 1 which point to newcomers, they propose that these newcomers probably came from Cyprus. No archaeological record of a Sea People-presence at Dor has been discovered. This study textually traces the Sikil from the Aegean to Cyprus, Egypt and finally to Dor and a theory is presented that the Sikil originated in the Aegean, temporarily settled in Cyprus and finally at Dor.
