Abstract:
Several studies were undertaken by various investigators during the last five decades to better understand the engineering behaviour of unsaturated soils. These studies are justified as more than 33% of soils worldwide are found in either arid or semi-arid regions with evaporation losses exceeding water infiltration. Due to this reason, the natural ground water table in these regions is typically at a greater depth and the soil above it is in a state of unsaturated conditions. Traditionally ships have been optimized for minimizing the fuel consumption in calm water. For slow, large ships like tankers and bulk carriers this has resulted in very blunt bows with high added resistance due to waves. The objective of this thesis has been to investigate if the optimal bow shape, when realistic wave conditions are taken into account, should be more slender than the current blunt bows. The added resistance is also highly dependent on the actual wave conditions the vessel experiences. Thus a question has been if the optimal bow changes with the operational area, or route, of

Although China presents a great opportunity for MNEs, this investment does not come without its difficulties, MNEs wishing to invest in China are confronted with certain challenges. Breytenbach, Michelle. "The effect of CSR initiatives on creating share of heart in BOP markets." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/25422.

Abstract:
This study is concerned with investigating whether corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives provide a means to build brand equity, specifically emotional connections known as share of heart, in bottom of the pyramid (BOP) markets. Research has found that brand experiences, positive product outcomes and nostalgia are antecedents to share of heart; however, this presupposes developed markets in which categories have already achieved primary demand. In underdeveloped BOP markets, market expansion is challenging and necessitates investments into social initiatives to increase the welfare o

Mugundhan, Vivek. "Tomographic Measurements of Turbulent Flow through a Contraction." Diss., 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10754/658574.

Abstract:
We investigate experimentally the turbulent flow through a two-dimensional contraction. Using a water tunnel with an active grid we generate turbulence at Taylor microscale Reynolds number Reλ ~ 250 which is advected through a 2.5:1 contraction. Volumetric and time-resolved Tomo-PIV and Shake-The-Box velocity measurements are used to characterize the evolution of coherent vortical structures at three streamwise locations upstream of, and within the contraction. We confirm the conceptual picture of coherent large-scale vortices being stretched and aligned with the mean rate of strain. This alig

This thesis presents the details of designing and commissioning the multi-use static/dynamic large-scale soil testing table. The table was developed with the intention of creating a large scale testing apparatus versatile enough to carry out several different types of testing on a large scale. This report describes the background research done to develop the testing table concept and the thinking that went into each component. The apparatus itself consists of a shake table with a laminar soil container (inside dimensions L:100cm W:50cm H:65cm) and a top which can be lowered to apply overburde

Its complexities mainly have two folds: complex flow behavior and intricate wing morphology. The complex flow behavior in insect flight are resulted from flow unsteadiness and three-dimensional effects. However, most of the experimental studies on insect flight were performed with 2D flow measurement techniques whereas the 3D flow measurement techniques are still under developing. This stringent requirement has been currently one of tough challenges for the researchers and shipyards.
