Almost all fresh-market apples are picked manually, and these apples rank among the most labor-intensive fruit crops to produce. Due to declining labor supply and rising labor costs, fresh-market apple growers are seeking mechanical harvesting solutions. Shake-and-catch is a potential method that has been well studied. However, because of fruit damage, this method cannot be widely used for fresh-market apples. The primary goal of this study was to investigate how the physical properties of the fruit tree and the shaker parameters affect fruit removal efficiency and fruit damage in an effort to help growers find solutions to the above-mentioned issues. A test system was developed, and its performance was evaluated in certain shaking modes. Based on the experimental results, the physical properties of the tree (length and diameter of limb, length and diameter of twig, and apple weight) and the frequency and amplitude of the shaker influenced the effectiveness of fruit detachment. When the amplitude of the shaker was 14.3 mm and the frequency was less than 15 Hz, the length of the twig had the greatest effect on fruit harvesting. However, with increasing frequency and amplitude, the effect of tree properties on fruit harvesting declined, and amplitude had a more significant effect on fruit harvesting than frequency. Moreover, the fruit removal rate reached 91.43% when the amplitude was 14.3 mm and the frequency was 20 Hz. The results of this study contribute to the development of an effective mechanical harvester that is adapted to tall spindle apple trees. Abstract:
The writer investigates possible anti-seismic construction techniques used in Minoan architecture on Bronze Age Crete. The frequency of earthquakes in the Aegean seems to imply the presence of such techniques. Starting by noting the methods still in use in Turkey and other dangerous areas, the writer looks at the practice of projections and setbacks, the near absence of windows, room dimensions, roof and floor construction, the presence of partition walls, the size and number of stories, town planning, the presence of cornices and ring beams, and other construction details which helped to improve the anti-seismic capability of Minoan houses. Attention is given to the location of houses and to the question of whether or not the Minoans used these methods consciously. The writer believes they did, not only because of the frequency of these earthquakes but also because of the religious connotations and the existence of an architectural koiné in earthquake-stricken areas in the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, in contrast with Egypt.

Abstract. With adopting the modern high-density tree architectures, localized shake-and-catch harvesting is becoming more promising for fresh market apples. To investigate the shaking inputs for an effective harvesting system, a multi-tier shake-and-catch harvesting platform was developed and evaluated in a commercial orchard. The platform composes of a shaker and two three-tier catching surfaces. Performance test was conducted in ‘Jazz’ apple trees trained to a vertical fruiting wall architecture (two horizontal branches at each tier). Two harvesting sections were defined in the test trees, namely, Section I - two neighboring branches at the same tier from two adjacent trees; and Section II - two branches at the same tier of a tree. For Section I, shaking was applied to the middle of each branch (location P1), and for Section II, shaking was applied at the location close to the trunk (location P2). Shaking frequency was set to 20 Hz, and two shaking durations (i.e., 5 and 2 s) were used. In the test, the catching angle relative to the horizontal plate was set to 15°. The results indicated that the fruit removal efficiencies (2nd to 4th tiers of trees were used in the analysis) were 76.6% and 78.1% for shaking at middle of each branch in 2 and 5 s shaking, respectively; those numbers were 86.3% and 89.5% for shaking at location P2. The percentage of marketable fruits were 89.7% and 90.6% for the Section I shaking in two durations, and 84.5% and 84.4% in the Section II shaking. Overall, this study revealed that 2 s shaking duration is sufficient to remove majority of fruits in the tested variety, and the section II shaking had higher overall fruit removal efficiency but also caused slightly more fruit damage. Development of hair cell stereocilia bundles involves three stages: elongation, thickening, and supernumerary stereocilia retraction. Although Myo-XVa is known to be essential for stereocilia elongation, its role in retraction/thickening remains unknown. We quantified stereocilia numbers/diameters in shaker-2 mice (Myo15sh2) that have deficiencies in “long” and “short” isoforms of myosin-XVa, and in mice lacking only the “long” myosin-XVa isoform (Myo15ΔN). Our data showed that myosin-XVa is largely not involved in the developmental retraction of supernumerary stereocilia. In normal development, the diameters of the first (tallest)/second row stereocilia within a bundle are equal and grow simultaneously. The diameter of the third row stereocilia increases together with that of taller stereocilia until P1-2 and then either decreases almost two-fold in inner hair cells (IHCs) or stays the same in outer hair cells (OHCs), resulting in a prominent diameter gradation in IHCs and less prominent in OHCs. Sh2 mutation abolishes this gradation in IHCs/OHCs. Stereocilia of all rows grow in diameters nearly equally in Myo15sh2/sh2 IHCs and OHCs. Conversely, ΔN mutation does not affect normal stereocilia diameter gradation until ~P8. Therefore, myosin-XVa “short” isoform is essential for developmental thinning of third row stereocilia, which causes diameter gradation within a hair bundle.

Network performance metrics such as delay variations and packet loss influence the performance of the network. As a consequence, the performance of applications on the network is also affected as most of the networked applications existing today are very much sensitive to the network performance. Therefore it is of utmost importance to test the intensity of such network level disturbances on the performance of applications. A network traffic shaper/emulator shapes the network traffic in terms of these performance metrics to test such applications in a controlled environment. Most of the traffic shapers existing today give the instantaneous step transition in delay and packet loss on network. In this work, we present time-controlled network traffic shaper, a tool that facilitates testing and experimentation of network traffic through emulation. It focuses on time variant behavior of the traffic shaper. A linear transition of delay and packet loss that is varying with respect to time may fits much better to the real network scenarios instead of an instantaneous step transition in delay and packet loss. This work illustrates the emulation capabilities of time-controlled network traffic shaper and presents its design architecture. Several approaches are analyzed to do the task and one of them is followed to develop the desired architecture of the shaper. The shaper is implemented in a small scenario and is tested to see whether the desired output is achieved or not. The shortfalls in the design of the shaper are also discussed. Results are presented that show the output from the shaper in graphical form. Although the current implementation of the shaper does not provide linear or exponential output but this can be achieved by implementing a configuration setting that is comprised of small transition values that are varying with respect to very small step sizes of time e.g. transitions on milli seconds or micro seconds. The current implementation of the shaper configuration provides the output with a transition of one milli second on every next second.

Abstract:
Computer simulations are an indispensable tool for scientists to gain new insights about nature. Simulations of natural phenomena are usually large, and limited by the available computer resources. By using the computer resources more efficiently, larger and more detailed simulations can be performed, and more information can be extracted to help advance human knowledge. The topic of this thesis is how to make best use of modern computers for scientific computations. The challenge here is the high level of parallelism that is required to fully utilize the multicore processors in these systems. Starting from the basics, the primitives for synchronizing between threads are investigated. Hardware transactional memory is a new construct for this, which is evaluated for a new use of importance for scientific software: atomic updates of floating point values. The evaluation includes experiments on real hardware and comparisons against standard methods. Higher level programming models for shared memory parallelism are then considered. The state of the art for efficient use of multicore systems is dynamically scheduled task-based systems, where tasks can depend on data. In such systems, the software is divided up into many small tasks that are scheduled asynchronously according to their data dependencies. This enables a high level of parallelism, and avoids global barriers. A new system for managing task dependencies is developed in this thesis, based on data versioning. The system is implemented as a reusable software library, and shown to be as efficient or more efficient than other shared-memory task-based systems in experimental comparisons. The developed runtime system is then extended to distributed memory machines, and used for implementing a parallel version of a software for global climate simulations. By running the optimized and parallelized version on eight servers, an equally sized problem can be solved over 100 times faster than in the original sequential version. The parallel version also allowed significantly larger problems to be solved, previously unreachable due to memory constraints.

Abstract:

Plentiful research has addressed low-complexity software-based shared-memory systems since the idea was first introduced more than two decades ago. However, software-coherent systems have not been very successful in the commercial marketplace. We believe there are two main reasons for this: lack of performance and/or lack of binary compatibility.

This thesis studies multiple aspects of how to design future binary-compatible high-performance scalable shared-memory servers while keeping the hardware complexity at a minimum. It starts with a software-based distributed shared-memory system relying on no specific hardware support and gradually moves towards architectures with simple hardware support.

The evaluation is made in a modern chip-multiprocessor environment with both high-performance compute workloads and commercial applications. It shows that implementing the coherence-violation detection in hardware while solving the interchip coherence in software allows for high-performing binary-compatible systems with very low hardware complexity. Our second-generation hardware-software hybrid performs on par with, and often better than, traditional hardware-only designs.

Based on our results, we conclude that it is not only possible to design simple systems while maintaining performance and the binary-compatibility envelope, it is often possible to get better performance than in traditional and more complex designs.

We also explore two new techniques for evaluating a new shared-memory design throughout this work: adjustable simulation fidelity and statistical multiprocessor cache modeling.

Les architectures parallèles hybrides constituées d'un grand nombre de noeuds de calcul multi-coeurs/GPU connectés en réseau offrent des performances théoriques très élevées, de l'ordre de quelque dizaines de TeraFlops. Mais la programmation efficace de ces machines reste un défi à cause de la complexité de l'architecture et de la multiplication des modèles de programmation utilisés. L'objectif de cette thèse est d'améliorer la programmation des applications scientifiques denses sur les architectures parallèles hybrides selon trois axes: réduction des temps d'exécution, traitement de données de très grande taille et facilité de programmation. Nous avons pour cela proposé un modèle de programmation à base de directives appelé DSTEP pour exprimer à la fois la distribution des données et des calculs. Dans ce modèle, plusieurs types de distribution de données sont exprimables de façon unifiée à l'aide d'une directive "dstep distribute" et une réplication de certains éléments distribués peut être exprimée par un "halo". La directive "dstep gridify" exprime à la fois la distribution des calculs ainsi que leurs contraintes d'ordonnancement. Nous avons ensuite défini un modèle de distribution et montré la correction de la transformation de code du domaine séquentiel au domaine distribué. À partir du modèle de distribution, nous avons dérivé un schéma de compilation pour la transformation de programmes annotés de directives DSTEP en des programmes parallèles hybrides. Nous avons implémenté notre solution sous la forme d'un compilateur intégré à la plateforme de compilation PIPS ainsi qu'une bibliothèque fournissant les fonctionnalités du support d'exécution, notamment les communications. Notre solution a été validée sur des programmes de calcul scientifiques standards tirés des NAS Parallel Benchmarks et des Polybenchs ainsi que sur une application industrielle
Clusters of multicore/GPU nodes connected with a fast network offer very high therotical peak performances, reaching tens of TeraFlops. Unfortunately, the efficient programing of such architectures remains challenging because of their complexity and the diversity of the existing programming models. The purpose of this thesis is to improve the programmability of dense scientific applications on hybrid architectures in three ways: reducing the execution times, processing larger data sets and reducing the programming effort. We propose DSTEP, a directive-based programming model expressing both data and computation distribution. A large set of distribution types are unified in a "dstep distribute" directive and the replication of some distributed elements can be expressed using a "halo". The "dstep gridify" directive expresses both the computation distribution and the schedule constraints of loop iterations. We define a distribution model and demonstrate the correctness of the code transformation from the sequential domain to the parallel domain. From the distribution model, we derive a generic compilation scheme transforming DSTEP annotated input programs into parallel hybrid ones. We have implemented such a tool as a compiler integrated to the PIPS compilation workbench together with a library offering the runtime functionality, especially the communication. Our solution is validated on scientific programs from the NAS Parallel Benchmarks and the PolyBenchs as well as on an industrial signal procesing application

It is well-known that daylight is a fundamental element to experiencean architectural space. In spite of that, there are limitedresources that consider how to form that space based ondaylight. This paper constitutes ‘Breaking the Box’ as a newconcept, which can be taken by architects, lighting designersand urban planners in parallel to their daylight design techniquesas a tool in design practice.‘Breaking the Box’ has its origin in the destruction of the boxconcept, a design method of the modern architecture pioneerFrank Lloyd Wright. Thus, it is an attempt to develop Wright’stheory in relation to daylight. The paper investigates severalqualitative and quantitative sub-tools in case studies andexperimental models, exploring a variety of configurations inspatial relationships and form to assess different characteristicsof daylight in residential environments.The aim of the study is to understand and control the penetrationof daylight qualities – considering both diffused skylightand direct sunlight – within a space in different latitudes.Thus, preserving the view and making the quality of daylightthe founding element shaping architecture by breaking thebox. The study revealed a strong relationship between daylightqualities and architectural form. As a result, it is evidencethat daylight does shape architecture. When it comes to incorporatingdaylight, form does not follow function but formand function are one.

For my thesis project, I have chosen to explore the exaptation of a vacant office building doomed to be demolished in Stockholm into a residential tower. This project’s focus is the investigation of the reusability of our existing built environment in a sustainable way together with diverse collective living concepts and a comparison of the value added from a deconstruction, reuse and an environmentally sound concept versus a full demolition and subsequent new construction.The paramount challenges we are facing are the changing climate and limitation of natural resources. We have to address this issue by rethinking our societal and habitational models; the way we live, how we inhabit space, how do we use resources and consume goods and especially how do we design and build our cities.

The architectures, fragile and in constant decay, represent a treatise of living architecture in which the shapes, proportions and decorations are repeated over time with continuity.This research tries to verify, with data coming from direct and instrumental surveys, the quality and diffusion of the architectures that dot the valleys of the Todhra and the Ziz which, at same time, host the population and defend the most precious asset: water. Along the valleys, united by the same language, we find: igherm, fortified citadels; tighremt, fortress houses.

Abstract:
This paper presents how complex system architecture lifecycles, such as that of cars, follow a similar S-curve shaped path as that of individual technological innovations. By applying this theory we show that today’s automotive industry has started a new chapter of architectural competition with similarities to its early history from 1885–1915 when steam, electric and internal combustion engine cars were competing to dominate the automotive market. Taking a historical perspective, we find that firms that organize their development activities to focus on bringing about architectural innovation are better placed in succeeding in the future market until a new dominant architecture emerges. The architecture lifecycle framework used in this study is constructed by means of a performance index. The index scores the performance of 91 cars of various architectures based on five overall system variables: power, weight, maximum velocity, fuel efficiency and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price. Depicting architectural performance over time helps identify periods of architecture competition and dominance where historical agents to change can be identified. The key factors that brought about architectural competition in the early 1900’s involved a series of innovation breakthroughs in engine and fuel technologies. Today, a new wave of power train innovations is being triggered primarily by environmental regulatory demands to reduce vehicle emissions. Future research lies in presenting a methodology for selecting vehicle architectures early on in the product development cycle that are best suited for the market going forward based on a manufacturer’s goals and a cost-benefit analysis.

Nature builds an immense set of materials exhibiting a wide range of behaviors using only a small number of basic compounds. The range of materials comes about through architecture, giving functional structure to the basic materials. Analogously, a new genre of actuators can be derived from existing smart materials through architecture. This paper presents a preliminary experimental study of knitted actuation architectures that yield high strains (up to 73%) with moderate forces (tens of Newtons or more) from basic contracting smart material fibers. By different combinations of the two primary knit loops – purl and knit – a variety of behaviors can be achieved including contraction, rolling, spirals, accordions, arching, and any combination of these across the fabric. This paper catalogs several basic knit stitches and their actuated form: garter, stockinette, seed, rib and I-cord. These knitted architectures provide performance tailorability (force, strain, stiffness, and motion) by manipulation of key design parameters such as the material properties of the wire, the geometric parameters (wire diameter, loop size, and gauge), and architectural parameters (stitch type and orientation). This is demonstrated via a quasi-static force-deflection experimental study with several shape memory alloy garter prototypes with varying geometric parameters. While the basic architecture of a knit is simple, it affords a vast array of architectural combinations and control of geometrical and material parameters that generate a myriad of gross motion capabilities beyond that of current day actuation strategies.

This paper reports on an exploratory study of how the architecture of a software product evolves over time. Because software is embedded in many of today’s complex products, and it is prone to relatively rapid change, it is instructive to study software architecture evolution for general insights into product design. We use metrics to capture the intrinsic complexity of software architectures as they evolve through successive generations (version releases). We introduce a set of product representations and metrics that take into account two important features used to manage the complexity in software products: layers and modules. We also capture organizational data associated with the product under development. We propose a three-step approach for the analysis and illustrate it using successive versions of an open source product, Ant. One of our findings is that software architectures seem to evolve in a non-linear manner similar to the S-shaped curve that characterizes technology evolution at the industry level. We also find several parallel patterns among architectural and organizational dynamics. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract The objective of this study is to investigate the value of an ecologically inspired architectural metric called the Degree of System Order in the System of Systems (SoS) architecting process. Two highly desirable SoS attributes are the ability to withstand and recover from disruptions (resilience) and affordability. In practice, more resilient SoS architectures are less affordable and it is essential to balance the trade-offs between the two attributes. Ecological research analyzing long-surviving ecosystems (nature’s resilient SoS) using the Degree of System Order metric has found a unique balance of efficient and redundant interactions in their architecture. This balance implies that highly efficient ecosystems tend to be inflexible and vulnerable to perturbations while highly redundant ecosystems fail to utilize resources effectively for survival. Motivated by this unique architectural property of ecosystems, this study investigates the response to disruptions vs. affordability trade-space of a large number of feasible SoS architectures. Results indicate that the most favorable SoS architectures in this trade-space share a specific range of values of Degree of System Order. This suggests that Degree of System Order can be a key metric in engineered SoS development. Evaluating the Degree of System Order does not require detailed simulations and can, therefore, guide the early stage SoS design process towards more optimal SoS architectures.

In the framework of the High Performance Oxide Ceramics program (HiPOC), three different oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials are studied for a combustion chamber application in continuation of the work reported in Gerendas et al. [1]. A variation in the micro-structural design of the three CMC materials in terms of different fiber architecture and matrix processing are considered in a first work stream. By modification of the matrix and the fiber-matrix interface as well as the application of an environmental barrier coating (EBC), the high temperature stability is enhanced. Furthermore, design concepts for the attachment of the CMC component to the metal structure of the engine are finalized in a second work stream. Issues like sealing of cooling leakage paths, allowance for the different thermal expansion and the mechanical fixation are addressed. An interim standard of the mechanical attachment scheme is studied on a shaker table. Also the friction coefficient between the metallic and ceramic components is analyzed in order to set the proper tightening torque. The manufacturing of the CMC combustor is improved in several iterations in order to achieve a high quality material with optimized fiber architecture. Afterwards, two CMC materials are selected for the combustion testing and the finalized design of the metallic and CMC components is manufactured. A fit check is performed prior to EBC application and laser drilling of the effusion holes in order to evaluate the impact of the manufacturing tolerances on the function of the sealing and attachment scheme and to correct small issues at this stage. First results from the validation testing in a high-pressure tubular combustion rig up to a Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL4) are reported.

Composite materials have been explored in architecture for their high performance characteristics that allow customization of functional properties of lightness, strength, stiffness and fracture toughness. Particularly, engineering advancements and better understanding of fiber composites have resulted in growing applications for architectural structures and envelopes. As most new developments in material fabrication start outside the realm of architecture such as in automobile and aeronautical industries, there is need to advance knowledge in architectural design to take advantage of new fabrication technologies. The authors introduce results of new digitally driven fabrication methods for fiber-reinforced composite sandwich panels for complex shaped buildings. This presentation discussed the material properties, manufacturing methods and fabrication techniques needed to develop a proof of concept system using off-the-shelf production technology that ultimately can be packaged into a mobile containerized facility for on-site panel production. The researchers conducted experiments focusing on developing a digitally controlled deformable mold to create composite relief structures for highly customized geometrical façade components. Research findings of production materials, fabrication methods and assembly techniques, are discussed to offer insights into novel opportunities for architectural composite panel fabrication and commercialization.

Product architecture significantly influences environmental impact. Modular architectures aid manufacture and reuse, thereby reducing manufacturing-related impacts and diverting usable waste from landfills. In contrast, modular product architectures may also sacrifice product performance or lead to over-designed products. These side-effects can increase environmental impact. The Black and Decker Firestorm and G5 George Foreman Griddle were studied to uncover and understand the effects of product architecture on energy and material efficiency. Both products incorporate component sharing for fulfilling multiple functions and incur environmental tradeoffs as a result. Experimentation, reverse engineering, and life cycle analysis of these products were used to inspire a number of guidelines for green design of modular product architectures. Difficulties involved the design of interfaces and selection of components for shared modules.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) have a great potential to transform the way we live and work, significantly reducing traffic accidents and harmful emissions on the one hand and enhancing travel efficiency and fuel economy on the other. Nevertheless, the safe and efficient control of AVs is still challenging because AVs operate in dynamic environments with unforeseen challenges. This project aimed to advance the state-of-the-art by designing a proactive/reactive adaptation and learning architecture for connected vehicles, unifying techniques in spatiotemporal data fusion, machine learning, and robust adaptive control. By leveraging data shared over a cloud network available to all entities, vehicles proactively adapted to new environments on the proactive level, thus coping with large-scale environmental changes. On the reactive level, control-barrier-function-based robust adaptive control with machine learning improved the performance around nominal models, providing performance and control certificates. The proposed research shaped a robust foundation for autonomous driving on cloud-connected highways of the future.

West-central Yukon and eastern Alaska are characterized by widespread metamorphic rocks that form part of the allochthonous, composite Yukon-Tanana terrane and parautochthonous North American margin. Structural windows through the Yukon-Tanana terrane expose parautochthonous North American margin in that broad region, particularly as mid-Cretaceous extensional core complexes. Both the Yukon-Tanana terrane and parautochthonous North American margin share the same Late Devonian history, making their discrimination difficult; however, distinct post-Late Devonian magmatic and metamorphic histories assist in discriminating Yukon-Tanana terrane from parautochthonous North American margin rocks. The suture between Yukon-Tanana terrane and parautochthonous North American margin is obscured by many episodes of high-strain deformation. Their main bounding structure is probably a Jurassic to Cretaceous thrust, which has been locally reactivated as a mid-Cretaceous extensional shear zone. Crustal-scale structures within composite Yukon-Tanana terrane (e.g. the Yukon River shear zone) are commonly marked by discontinuous mafic-ultramafic complexes. Some of these complexes represent orogenic peridotites that were structurally exhumed into the Yukon-Tanana terrane in the Middle Permian.

Age dependent programs are responsible for the physiological and developmental differences of young and mature plants. These include a range of morphological characters such as leaf shape and leaf composition (waxes, lignin etc..) but also different in developmental potentials. Apical buds of juvenile plants are vegetative, while those of mature plants can be reproductive. Likewise, basal buds form in the axills of juvenile leaves have different fates than distal buds formed in the axils of mature leaves. The goal of our joint project is to understand and exploit theses age related programs for specific improvement of crop plants. To that end both the WIS group and the PGEC group are using mutants with age related defects as well as modified expression of miR156 to modify age related programs in crop plants- Tomato and potato in Israel and Maize, switchgrass and Brchipodium in the US. In the US, major effort were made to: Characterize the contribution of selected miR156 target genes to yield component traits of maize. Functional analysis of microRNAs and their targets in new crop plants. In Israel, the research progressed in several directions: Understanding the interplay between age dependent programs and the potential of tomato and potato meristems to produce tubers. Evaluation of the agronomic value of mutants that alter flowering regime in side shoots in general, and in the sympodial buds in particular Characterization of wild type axillary buds, comparing shoot ontogeny of gradually maturing apices from basal and distal positions along the main shoot of tomato.

Every year, over 60,000 work zone crashes are reported in the United States (FHWA 2016). Such work zone crashes have resulted in over 4,400 fatal and 200,000 non-fatal injuries in the last 5 years (FHWA 2016, BLS 2014). Apart from the physical and emotional trauma, the annual cost of these injuries exceeds $4 million-representing significant wasted resources. To improve work zone safety, this research developed a system architecture for unveiling high-risk behavioral patterns among highway workers, equipment operators, and drivers within dynamic highway work zones. This research implemented the use of a connected virtual environment, which is an immersive hyper-realistic and virtual environment where multiple agents (e.g. workers, drivers, and equipment handlers) control independent simulators but experience an interactive and shared experience. For this project, the team conducted an in-depth analysis of accident investigation, simulated accident scenarios, and tested diverse interventions to prevent high-risk behavior. Overall, the research improved understanding of behavioral patterns that lead to injuries and fatalities of highway workers in order to better protect them in high-risk work environments. As part of making transportation smarter, this project contributes to smart behavioral safety analysis.
