Abstract:
Cities are the main contributors of anthropogenic greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions. Comprehensive countermeasures are needed in cities to mitigate GHGs emissions. The aim of this paper is to study the results that Shanghai achieved in carbon mitigation by comprehensive green measures. It demonstrated that Shanghai has made significant progress in carbon emission reduction through technological innovation, industrial structure adjustment, and energy efficiency improvement in recent years. The results showed that Shanghais energy related CO2 intensity reduced to 1.14 t/104 yuan in 2010, owing to adjustments in energy structure and industry structure. It also showed that Shanghai had made abundant reduction in carbon emissions in the past few years. 9.2 million tons of CO2 reductions were obtained in industry, transportation, and building in the city level. Among them, reductions in industrial sector and transportation were the major contributors. Further efforts should be taken to realize a low carbon future.

Abstract:
The relationship between CO2 emission and economic growth of Shanghai is discussed, which is realized in the way of mutual study of the cointegrating analysis of GDP, energy consumption and CO2 emission from 1993 to 2009 of Shanghai and the study of causality based on VECM. As can be seen from the conclusion, in the long run, the relationship between the economic growth and CO2 emission of Shanghai is unidirectional, i.e., the growth of economy will promote the quantity of emitted CO2.However, CO2 emission is not the Granger cause of economic growth. But in the short run, they constitute no cause-and-effect relationship. Therefore, some suggestions regarding the energy conservation and emission reduction policies of Shanghai are presented based on an empirical analysis.

Abstract:
The article focuses on the problem of social and economic status of Russian émigrés in Shanghai in 1922–1925, in particular from the arrival of the Siberian flotilla to the beginning of the May Thirtieth Movement. Based on previously unexplored official records from the Shanghai Municipal Archive (SMA), Shanghai Municipal Police Files (SMPF) and the detailed research of the press, the author manages to significantly supplement the portrait of Russian émigrés’ life during the above period. The wider source base of this research, as compared those that are available for an earlier period of 1917–1922, allows us to describe the social and economic status of the émigrés in more precise terms. Statistical information from the Municipal Council of the Shanghai International Settlement evidences a high unemployment rate among the émigrés (according to the police records, it reached 71,4 % among employable men). Obviously, the humanitarian aid from the government and city communities could not satisfy needs of the unemployed. 1) At the end of 1924, Shanghai press reported the case when the Russians were sleeping in the houses without roof near the Chapei railway; 2) Shanghai was able to provide free food only for 2280 Russian refugees. However, according to statistics dated October 9, 1923 and February 1, 1924, the number of unemployed men and women reached 3 500. This means that not all Russians in Shanghai were provided with a minimum of food. As compared to 1917–1922, problems of women and street kids also persisted but due to public support child begging stopped although problems of women continued to exist until the communists came to power in Shanghai. “Russian prostitution” even became part of the Shanghai’s historical memory. A special problem during the period of 1922–1925 was poor sanitation in areas where Russian cadets lived as a result of harsh living conditions and low social and economic status (this situation was not recorded in the anniversary editions of Khabarovsky and Siberian Cadet Corps).

Full text
Abstract:
Although school-based teacher developmental activities have been launched for years in general education system, such comparatively systematic and effective work have yet been thoroughly adopted by most of the out-of-school educational institutions. Studies on Children’s Palaces education and school-based teacher development are extremely limited, not only because the overall management of out-of-school education system is not as complete as that of general education system, but also the features of Children’s Palace education made the study hard but more and more necessary. Guided by the theoretical framework of Lifelong Education and Professionalism Theory, the purpose of this dissertation aims at finding out the problems of the children's palace school-based staff development, and exploring reasons behind through analyzing quantitative and qualitative research data from the case study of No.2 Children’s Palace of Jinshan District, give recommendations so that teachers may gain more concrete benefit through the system of school-based teacher development. The questionnaire for quantitative research contains two parts. Part I contains questions about the need of teacher development in No.2 CP, and Part II contains question about perspectives and current situation concerning school-based teacher development in No.2 CP. After the quantitative approach and research data analysis, qualitative approach of follow-up interviews will be carried out. Synthesized data analysis aims at answering research questions such as current status of school-based teacher development in No.2 CP and mode and examples that might be drawn to inspire the school-based teacher development in Children’s Palaces in Shanghai.

Zhuang, Xiaoming, and 庄小鸣. "Vitamin D deficiency in patients with type 2 diabetes in a Shanghai hospital : the impact on glycemic control." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/193833.

Full text
Abstract:
Objective:Low vitamin D has been implicated in the development of type 2 diabetes. However, whether vitamin D continues to have a clinically significant effect in existing diabetes is unclear. The objective of this study was to examine the association of serum vitamin D with glycemic control in established type 2 diabetes. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of medical records. Characteristics of 487 patients with type 2 diabetes were stratified by vitamin D status and serum glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Vitamin D deficiency among the subjects was studied. The relationship between vitamin D and glycemic control was explored by multiple linear regression, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and chi-square test. Patients were stratified into overweight and non-overweight group based on body mass index (BMI), and the association of serum vitamin D concentration with glycemic control was evaluated in each group. Insulin resistance and C-peptide as mediators between vitamin D and HbA1c was tested. The impact of vitamin D on cholesterol metabolism was also assessed. Results: (1) Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent, accounting for 88.3% of the study sample. (2) Serum vitamin D levels were significantly inversely associated with serum HbA1c. This correlation was stronger in overweight group than in non-overweight group. There was no significant relationship between serum vitamin D levels and fasting plasma glucose (FPG). HbA1c was significantly lower in vitamin D insufficiency group than in vitamin D severe deficiency group. (3) Insulin resistance partially mediated the association between vitamin D and HbA1c. (4) No significant association of Vitamin D with low density lipoprotein (LDL) or high density lipoprotein (HDL) was found in this study. Conclusions: There was an inverse association between serum vitamin D levels and HbA1c. The inverse correlation of serum vitamin D level and HbA1c was stronger in overweight group than in non-overweight group, which indicates patients with obesity might benefit more from vitamin D supplementation.
