Abstract:
This paper presents optimization schemes for the five-axis flank milling of jet engine impellers based on the mechanics model explained in Part I. The process is optimized by varying the feed automatically as the tool-workpiece engagements, i.e. the process, varies along the tool path. The feed is adjusted by limiting feed-dependent peak outputs to a set of user-defined constraints. These outputs are tool shank bending stress, tool deflection, maximum chip load (to avoid edge chipping) and the torque limit of the machine. The linear and angular feeds of the machine are optimized by two differe

Abstract:
This paper describes the first stages of hardware development and preliminary assessment for a powered lower limb orthosis designed to provide gait assistance and rehabilitation to children with walking impairments, such as those associated with cerebral palsy and spina bifida. The design requirements, including range of motion, speeds, torques, and powers, are investigated and presented based on a target user age range of 6–11 years old. A three stage joint actuator is designed, built, and tested against the design requirements. The 0.6 kg actuator produced 4.2 Nm continuous torque and 17.2 N

Abstract:
The Starfire Optical Range 1.5 meter telescope is equipped with a 208 subaperture, 241 actuator adaptive optics system operating at visible wavelengths. The adaptive optics are located in a coudé room. A copper vapor laser beam is injected into the coudé feed with a polarizing beam splitter aperture sharing element and is focused at 10 km or greater range in the atmosphere to generate a Rayleigh laser guide star. The wavefront distortion on the returned light is sensed with a Shack-Hartmann sensor. Full aperture tilt of a nearby natural guide star is sensed by computation of the image centroid
