Emilien, Blandine, and Shankar Veerta. "From duping clients to institutional entrepreneurship in Mauritius: the account of a former BPO worker who became an activist." Work, Employment and Society 31, no. 6 (May 2, 2017): 1021–30. http://dx.doi.org/10.1177/0950017017695041.

Abstract:
This ‘on the front line’ account allows Shankar Veerta to voice out his concerns as an activist in Mauritius. Shankar’s account provides insights into the recent work of collective actors who, as institutional entrepreneurs, aim to bring social change in Mauritius and support vulnerable workers. Mauritius has achieved its heralded economic success by adjusting consistently to liberalized regimes of the global economy. As a former business process outsourcing (BPO) worker, however, Shankar casts a critical lens on challenges facing workers operating in the new BPO sector of Mauritius. He then explains how and why he joined a local political movement that supported non-unionized workers during major industrial disputes in the BPO sector in 2011. Finally, Shankar describes the movement’s attempts to initiate divergent change through enabling conditions that have allowed it to start raising awareness among Mauritian workers and citizens.

Abstract:
Uday Shankar's career as a dancer and choreographer has been under frequent inspection by dance historians and scholars in both the South Asian and Euro-American worlds. To date, some articles, books, and biographies have documented various aspects Shankar's life, which provide factual details about his performance career (Banerji 1982; Khokar 1983; Mukhopadhyay 2004; Singha and Massey 1967). While these biographies serve as an important source in their delineation of Shankar's life and his works, there have been few attempts at critical analyses and evaluation of Shankar's body of choreographic works. Scant scholarly interests in Shankar have mostly described him as one of the many exotic “oriental” dancers in Europe.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper explores the notion of cultural dialogue in terms of a specific application: the contributions made by the sitar music of the Indian musician Ravi Shankar to the setting up of a conversation between the musical traditions of North India and their reception and partial assimilation by largely Western audiences. A survey of Shankar’s career, contextualized by a more general discussion of the problems and challenges encountered in bringing the musical conventions of one tradition into conversation with the musical expectations and assumptions of another culture leads to the conclusion that what Shankar achieved, over a lifetime of creativity and musical fusion, was a partial success: on the one hand, it disseminated the auratic aspects of this musical tradition to a wide global audience; but on the other, it did so at the cost measured by purists in terms of a simplification or dilution of the music as practised in its original cultural contexts.

Abstract:
We determine some particular values of the noncommutativity parameter θ and show that the Murthy–Shankar approach is in fact a particular case of a more general one. Indeed, using the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) experimental data, we give a measurement of θ. This measurement can be obtained by considering some values of the filling factor ν and other ingredients, magnetic field B and electron density ρ. Moreover, it is found that θ can be quantized either fractionally or integrally in terms of the magnetic length l0 and the quantization is exactly what Murthy and Shankar formulated recently for the FQHE. On the other hand, we show that the mapping of the FQHE in terms of the composite fermion basis has a noncommutative geometry nature and therefore there is a more general way than the Murthy–Shankar method to do this mapping.

Abstract:
The present studies were carried out to characterize seventy-one aromatic rice germplasm from IGKV, Raipur. These germplasm were characterized and grouped on the basis of anthocyanin pigmentation, plant habit, and awning character. On the basis of pigmentation distribution in 10 plant parts, a total of twelve groups were formed with group one having no pigmentation and group twelve with pigmentation in 9 plant parts. On the basis of plant habit and awning character, three groups of each were formed. The genetic parameters for the ten agronomic traits indicated that the selection of genotypes may be done for fertile spikelets per panicle, spikelet density, spikelet sterility percentage, and hundred seed weight. Thus, on the basis of above characters, the genotypes Tulsi Mala, Baanspati, Ganga Balu, Samund Chini, Tulsi Amrit, Dudh Dhan, Kari Gilas, Shankar Jeera, and Jata Shankar may be selected for future study. Abstract:
When the events of graphical nature take extreme form, then the entire biological world including human beings gets into difficulty and a situation of destruction arises. Such incidents are sometimes so quick that it becomes difficult to recover. In the face of these events of nature, man becomes dwarf such as volcanoes, earthquakes and water floats etc. Although such events are born out of the normal process of nature, but some of the human responses to its depth and expansion become helpful, such as the exacerbation of seasonal events from forest destruction. Such disruptive natural phenomena are called natural disasters. Divine disasters caused by environmental imbalances disturb the biotic world. Loss from such outbreaks ever. Sometimes it is so fierce that despite all the scientific and technological development, the human kneels in front of them. These natural outbreaks are directly related to the environment. Those who have been running since time immemorial. But it is also true that due to increase in human numbers and prosperity due to these natural outbreaks, the effects of natural hazards are becoming more harmful. Thus we can say that today with the nature behind the natural outbreak. Human crisis is also associated with it.
