Abstract:
In the use of information theory for the development of forecasting models, two alternative approaches can be used, based either on Shannon entropy or on Kullback information gain. In this paper, a new approach is presented, which combines the usually superior statistical inference powers of the Kullback procedure with the advantages of the availability of calibrated ‘elasticity’ parameters in the Shannon approach. Situations are discussed where the combined approach is preferable to either of the two existing procedures, and the principles are illustrated with the help of a small numerical example.

When I was asked to comment on Shannon Dawdy's position paper entitled ‘Millennial archaeology. Locating the discipline in the age of insecurity’ I must admit that I was, even with the give-away ‘millennium’ of the title, thinking of the current economic crisis, the ‘credit crunch’ as it is known in Britain. Shannon Dawdy seems to describe a much more specific American crisis – the realization that the United States are not somehow outside history, that they can be hit on their home ground and that their political and military hegemony is contested (and if you detect a certain European smugness there, you are probably right).

The Shannon-Wiener formula was modified in such a way as to include, apart from total diversity, also the total volume of the biotical resources of a plant community, i.e. the amount of accumulated biomass or total production. This was used to describe forest regeneration after clear-cutting. The state of each successional stage was evaluated by comparing its structure with the model of mature community belonging to plant association sensu Braun-Blanquet, which is a system with a structure corresponding to the equifinal state.

Abstract:
Antibiotics are biologically active and are globally used in humans and animal medicine for treatment and in sub-therapeutic amounts as growth promoters in animal husbandry, aquaculture and agriculture. After excretion, inappropriate disposal and discharge from drug production facilities they enter into water bodies either as intact drugs, metabolites or transformed products. In water environments they promote development of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) which could serve as a reservoir and be horizontally transferred to human-associated bacteria and thus contribute to AR proliferation. Measurement of antibiotics has been revolutionized with the usage of solid phase extraction (SPE) for enrichment followed by Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS). On-line SPE coupled to LC-MS/MS has the advantages of high sample throughput, low sample preparation time and minimal solvent utilization.  Constructed wetlands (CWs) are potential alternatives to conventional treatment plants to remove organic pollutants. A study at Plönninge, Halmstad was performed to assess the impact of bacterial community pattern and development of resistance in spiked (n=4) and control (n=4). CWs were spiked with antibiotics at environmentally relevant concentrations continuously for 25 days. Shannon Index (H’) were used to determine the bacterial diversity and real-time PCR detected and quantified antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) sulI, tetA, tetB, erm, dfrA1, qnrS and vanB and class 1 integrons intI1. No significant differences in bacterial compositions or in ARGs or integron concentrations could be discerned between exposed and control wetlands. A study conducted in Northern Pakistan showed that the antibiotic levels in most studied rivers were comparable to surface water measurements in unpolluted sites in Europe and the US. However, high levels of antibiotics were detected in the river in close vicinity of the 10 million city Lahore, e.g. 4600 ng L−1 sulfamethoxazole. Highest detected levels were at one of the drug formulation facilities, with measured levels up to 49000 ng L−1 of sulfamethoxazole for example. The highest levels of ARGs detected, sul1 and dfrA1, were directly associated with the antibiotics detected at the highest concentrations, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. In the study in UK, sewage epidemiology surveillance is used to measure the oseltamivir carboxylate (OC), metabolite of oseltamivir (parent drug) in twenty four time proportional hourly influent samples from two WWTPs and then back-calculations were made to assess the compliance of drug.  Predicted users of oseltamivir, based on measured OC in waste water, ranged from 3-4 and 120-154 people for the two WWTP catchments, respectively, which are consistent with the projected use from national antiviral allocation statistics, 3-8 and 108-270, respectively. Scenario analysis suggests compliance was likely between 45-60% in the study regions.

Yan, Hongliang. "Modernity, sustainability and the development of heritage tourism in China's Shandong Province." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2009. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/20581/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the relationships between the planning, development and representation of heritage for tourist consumption and the notions of modernity, identity and sustainable development in contemporary China. The study's approach involved developing a conceptual framework of issues related to heritage tourism and the notions of modernity, identity-building and sustainable development. It draws from theory and concepts of western literature and previous studies of China, and this was then applied to the case study. The study used a case study approach based on four heritage sites in Shandong Province in order to gain "deeper" insights and understandings of the phenomena being studied, including their basis in politics, governance, administration and socio-cultural issues. Qualitative methods were adopted and relevant primary data were collected through semi-structured interviews, document analysis and field observation. All these sources were analysed and interpreted through the use of a constant comparative approach, which meant that the interpretation was comparative, iterative and flexible. The research findings of this study demonstrate and explain the role of heritage tourism in mediating between modernity and tradition, development and sustainable development, and the local and the global. Actors from different social groups who had interests in heritage tourism development at the four sites sometimes shared certain views about modernity, identity and sustainability, but sometimes they held rather different opinions about these key organising ideas. The actors involved in policy-making and planning at the sites held some similar and some differentiated beliefs about the representation of heritage for tourist consumption, with this reflecting their varying interests in the past as a resource and in tourism development. The research findings revealed the tensions and even open contestation among the actors with interests in development of the sites. The agreement and contestation around heritage tourism could alter people's cognition and behaviour, including their overall notions of modernity, identity and sustainability. The study adds a new approach and new insights into the relationships between heritage tourism and notions of modernity, identity-building and sustainable development in China, which is shown to be an under-researched general topic. It demonstrates that the role of the state, political ideology, institutions, tradition, society and culture, and other external elements have considerable impacts on the presentation of heritage. It also indicates that the complex relationships between tourism and the notions of modernity, identity and sustainability are rarely stable; rather they often are mobile and dynamic.

Abstract:
The availability of several methods to unambiguously mark individual cells has strongly fostered the understanding of clonal developments in hematopoiesis and other stem cell driven regenerative tissues. While cellular barcoding is the method of choice for experimental studies, patients that underwent gene therapy carry a unique insertional mark within the transplanted cells originating from the integration of the retroviral vector. Close monitoring of such patients allows accessing their clonal dynamics, however, the early detection of events that predict monoclonal conversion and potentially the onset of leukemia are beneficial for treatment. We developed a simple mathematical model of a self-stabilizing hematopoietic stem cell population to generate a wide range of possible clonal developments, reproducing typical, experimentally and clinically observed scenarios. We use the resulting model scenarios to suggest and test a set of statistical measures that should allow for an interpretation and classification of relevant clonal dynamics. Apart from the assessment of several established diversity indices we suggest a measure that quantifies the extension to which the increase in the size of one clone is attributed to the total loss in the size of all other clones. By evaluating the change in relative clone sizes between consecutive measurements, the suggested measure, referred to as maximum relative clonal expansion (mRCE), proves to be highly sensitive in the detection of rapidly expanding cell clones prior to their dominant manifestation. This predictive potential places the mRCE as a suitable means for the early recognition of leukemogenesis especially in gene therapy patients that are closely monitored. Our model based approach illustrates how simulation studies can actively support the design and evaluation of preclinical strategies for the analysis and risk evaluation of clonal developments.

Abstract:
The Clean Development Mechanism under Kyoto Protocol created a new age for current global emission situation. China, who owns over one third of the whole CDM projects in the world, occupies the main part of CDM development. As one of the biggest and most active economy, China declared that they would reduce their carbon emission by 40%-45% per unit GDP in 2020 compared with the 2005 level, in which CDM has the chance to highlight its value. By the day 28 April 2010, there are 814 registered CDM projects distributed in different provinces in China mainland and this number is still increasing rapidly. Because of large number of CDM projects and the significantly distinct situations in different regions of China, the author chooses two provinces, Shandong and Shaanxi, in east and west of China respectively, as representative samples to do this study. This essay investigates the current situation of CDM projects in those two provinces, and studies the contribution of these projects to emission reduction of Shandong and Shaanxi provinces in last and the next several years. The result shows that CDM projects do contribute to future potential emission reduction but their contribution are limited in these two provinces.

Sun, Lei. "An Analysis Of The Development Of Small-scale Household Pond Aquaculture In Post-Reform China, With Special Reference To The Coordinating Role Of Local Government : A Case Study of Weishan and Yutai Counties in Jining Prefecture, Shandong Province." Thesis, University of Reading, 2006. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.485343.

Abstract:
'One of the key features of China's agricultural reform since 1979 is the diversification of agricultural products. As a result of the policy, the share of traditional crop production declined while aquaculture has become the fastest growing agricultural sector. The small-scale household pond aquaculture production, which was almost non-existent before the reform, now plays a dominant role in terms -of fresh-water aquaculture output. The research studies this 'new' mode of economic development, especially the role of local government coordination during the transitional period.of the reform when market was incomplete, by means of a case study of small-scale household pond aquaculture in Shandong province based on data collected through fieldwork. The research uses both quantitative and qualitative analysis. Using household data .- survey across 20 to~ships in counties Weishan and Yutai in lining Prefecture (which is one of the most important fresh water aquaculture production bases in China), the research employed Cobb-Douglas production function to identify the source of growth for small-scale household pond production. The contribution of technological progress to the growth and farmers' increased income is also studied to provide a background knowledge that determined the coordination role of the local government. In order to assess this coordination role, the researcher uses primary interviews from fish farmers and government officials both at the national and the local level. The major findings of this thesis .provide empirical evidence on how China's decentralized government structure effectively facilitated a coordination role of local government to overcome market deficiency when the innovative reform programme, small-scale household pond aquaculture, was introduced into an incomplete market. Moreover, the research used the primary household data survey for an in-depth analysis of production economics for small-scale household production in combination with traditional crop production and identified the major sources for the growth, the opportunity and challenges facing the aquaculture industry. By providing micro evidence, the thesis contributes to the literature on China' economic reform.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This work examines the process of software development from Informing Sciences (IS) point of view. We explore how the three IS precursor theories--Shannon and Weaver’s Model of the communication process, Leavitt’s Change-equilibrium model, and the “Meta-approach” to mod-eling--justify a model-driven approach to software development and we argue that modeling through abstraction, metaphoric mapping and metaphoric comparison is the link holding together the three cornerstone theories of IS.

Abstract:
In the Cultural Heritage (CH) domain, the semantic segmentation of 3D point clouds with Deep Learning (DL) techniques allows to recognize historical architectural elements, at a suitable level of detail, and hence expedite the process of modelling historical buildings for the development of BIM models from survey data. However, it is more difficult to collect a balanced dataset of labelled architectural elements for training a network. In fact, the CH objects are unique, and it is challenging for the network to recognize this kind of data. In recent years, Generative Networks have proven to be proper for generating new data. Starting from such premises, in this paper Generative Networks have been used for augmenting a CH dataset. In particular, the performances of three state-of-art Generative Networks such as PointGrow, PointFLow and PointGMM have been compared in terms of Jensen-Shannon Divergence (JSD), the Minimum Matching Distance-Chamfer Distance (MMD-CD) and the Minimum Matching Distance-Earth Mover’s Distance (MMD-EMD). The objects generated have been used for augmenting two classes of ArCH dataset, which are columns and windows. Then a DGCNN-Mod network was trained and tested for the semantic segmentation task, comparing the performance in the case of the ArCH dataset without and with augmentation.

Abstract:
Following the 2000 European Landscape Convention, a new act strengthening landscape protection instruments has been in force since 2015. It sets forth legal aspects of landscape shaping (Dziennik Ustaw 2015, poz. 774) and introduces landscape audits at the province level. A landscape audit consists in identification and characterization of selected landscapes, assessment of their value, selection of so-called priority landscapes and identification of threats for preservation of their value. An audit complies with GIS standards. Analyses use source materials, i.e. digital maps of physical-geographical mesoregions, current topographic maps of digital resources of cartographic databases, latest orthophotomaps and DTMs, maps of potential vegetation, geobotanic regionalization, historic-cultural regionalization and natural landscape types, documentation of historical and cultural values and related complementary resources. A special new methodology (Solon et al. 2014), developed for auditing, was tested in 2015 in an urban area (Myga-Piatek et al. 2015). Landscapes are characterized by determining their analytic (natural and cultural) and synthetic features, with particular focus on the stage of delimitation and identification of landscape units in urban areas. Czestochowa was selected as a case study due to its large natural (karst landscapes of the Czestochowa Upland, numerous forests, nature reserves) and cultural (Saint Mary’s Sanctuary, unique urban architecture) potential. Czestochowa is also a city of former iron ore and mineral resources exploitation, still active industry, dynamic urban sprawl within former farming areas, and dynamically growing tourism. Landscape delimitation and identification distinguished 75 landscape units basing on uniform landscape background (uniform cover and use of the land). Landscape assessment used a new assessment method for anthropogenic transformation of landscape – the indicator describing the correlation between the mean shape index (MSI) and the Shannon diversity index (SHDI) (Pukowiec-Kurda, Sobala 2016). Particular threats and planning suggestions, useful in development of urban areas, were presented for selected priority landscapes.
