Abstract:
The experimental music of Chinese musicians including Yan Jun, Li Jianhong, Jun-Y Chao, Shen Piji and the Tea Rockers Quintet embodies a particular mode of thinking rooted in Chinese qi-philosophy known as shanshui (山水)-thought, which considers nature and the environment as secret and nurturing. Shanshui-thought cultivates an existential gesture of following rather than obeying or conquering; it requires tacit resonance rather than object knowing. Shanshui-thought enables us to recognise the cosmic, aesthetic and moral values of music qualities of dan (淡) (quiet and bland) and you (幽) (inward expandedness), once described as ‘poverty’ and ‘darkness’ by the composer Christian Wolff of what he calls ascetic minimalism.

Abstract:
Abstract Meandering rivers, elevated walkways and high-rise buildings revive traditional landscape paintings in an attempt to re-establish a connection between Chinese citizens and their urban space. Since the Open Door Policy in 1978 and the consequent period of reforms, introduced by Deng Xiaoping, the People's Republic of China (PRC) has been focusing on the economic and urban development of the nation to affirm its modernization and global role. Particularly, since 2001, urbanization has been driven by economic and political goals that have overshadowed Chinese cultural and historical specificity and residents' needs. Cities and metropolises have become the symbol of the country's modernization and globalization, attracting foreign capital and visibility. At the same time, the frenetic and unprecedented scale of urbanization in Mainland China has caused the loss of historical and cultural areas, forced evictions, social instability and worsened pollution, among other issues. By presenting the case study of Beijing-based architect and artist, Ma Yansong, I will illustrate how tradition and culture could be reinvented and implemented in the contemporary urban realities. To do that, Chinese painter Xie He's treatise on the aesthetics of traditional landscape painting will provide with an original framework to understand Ma's urban concept of shanshui city. Aiming to re-connect everyday individuals with their urban space and cultural and historical background, this article responds to the urgency to envision future cities that are conceived by and for Chinese citizens and stem from China's ancient tradition and cultural specificity. Moreover, it intends to question the current urbanizing process and foster alternative urban imaginaries for future Chinese cities.

Abstract:
Penghu islands, in the southern Taiwan Strait, is a remnant of a middle-late Miocene basaltic shield volcano. We present a procedure to use UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) to perform photogrammetry survey and monitoring analysis in beach evolution scenarios. The aim of this study is to understand spatial-temporal change along the sandy beach in Penghu islands, especially as for the effects of typhoon and coastal structures. According to the study result, this example of application is provided to show the results and the potential of this methodology in real beach changes. In addition, we found the typhoon and coastal structures play important roles to shape the beach morphology and its evolution. The result of beach monitoring reveals that the reduction and change of sand volume in Shanshui beach resulted from the placement of detached breakwater complexes. This coastal structure likely resulted in the development of tombolo and therefor make the beach unstable and subject to conduct rip current and more erosion.

Eskildsen, Stephen. "Debating what Lü Dongbin Practiced: Why did the Yuan Daoist Miao Shanshi Denounce the Zhong-Lü Texts?" T’oung Pao 102, no. 4-5 (November 29, 2016): 407–47. http://dx.doi.org/10.1163/15685322-10245p04.

Abstract:
Miao Shanshi (fl. 1324), in his Chunyang dijun shenhua miaotong ji, a large collection of stories about the legendary immortal Lü Dongbin, denounces as spurious and fallacious the three so-called “Zhong-Lü texts” (Zhong-Lü chuandao ji, Lingbao bifa, and Xishan qunxian huizhen ji) that claim to convey the inner alchemical teachings learned and practiced by Lü Dongbin. So why did Miao Shanshi, who saw himself as a champion of Quanzhen Daoist orthodoxy and defender of Lü Dongbin’s true legacy, so disdain these texts? Clues for answering this question are to be found in the dialogue between Zhongli Quan and Lü Dongbin recorded in the Miaotong ji’s sixth episode. Miao Shanshi’s editorial comments provide further hints as to what he objected to in the Zhong-Lü texts, as well as to how he himself may have arrived at his notion of what Lü Dongbin learned, practiced, and later taught. Attention is here also paid to another work of his, entitled Xuanjiao dagong’an. Miao Shanshi’s inner alchemical methods, which he considered the true teachings of Lü Dongbin, compared to those advocated in the Zhong-Lü texts, are much less complicated and seem to essentially consist of making the mind clear and calm while slowing down one’s breathing.

Corrosion behaviors of X80 pipeline steel were investigated in different simulated alkaline soil solution using electrochemical test, EDS coupled to SEM and weight loss method. The results showed uniform corrosion was happened on X80 steel in Shanshan and Hami simulated solution, and local corrosion was the main failure mode for X80 steel in Yumen simulated solution. The ranking of corrosion rate of X80 steel from the biggest in simulated solution was Hami, Shanshan and Yumen. With the increasing of immersion time, a dense Ca2+ deposited layer was formed on the surface of X80 steel, which could inhibiting the Cl- effects on the corrosion of X80 steel in Shanshan and Hami solution. The SO42- competition absorbed effect could provide certain corrosion protection for X80 steel in Yumen solution at the early corrosion stage.

Abstract:
Abstract Targeted observation is one of the most important research and forecasting issues for improving tropical cyclone predictability. A new parameter [i.e., the adjoint-derived sensitivity steering vector (ADSSV)] has been proposed and adopted as one of the targeted observing strategies in the Dropwindsonde Observations for Typhoon Surveillance near the Taiwan Region (DOTSTAR). The ADSSV identifies the sensitive areas at the observing time to the steering flow at the verifying time through the adjoint calculation. In this study, the ADSSV is calculated from the nonlinear forecast model of the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research (PSU–NCAR) Mesoscale Model (MM5) and its adjoint to interpret the dynamical processes in the interaction between Typhoon Shanshan (2006) and the midlatitude trough. The ADSSV results imply that high-sensitivity regions affecting the motion of Typhoon Shanshan are located at the edge of the subtropical high and the 500-hPa midlatitude trough over northern central China. These ADSSV signals are in very good agreement with the quantitative evaluation based on the potential vorticity (PV) diagnosis. The vertical structure of the ADSSV is also shown for more physical insights into the typhoon–trough interaction. The maximum ADSSV occurs at 800–500 hPa to the southeast of Shanshan (associated with the subtropical high), while distinct ADSSV signals are located upstream of the storm center at about 500–300 hPa (associated with the mid- to upper-tropospheric midlatitude trough). Overall, it is demonstrated that the ADSSV features can well capture the signal of the large-scale trough feature affecting the motion of Shanshan, which can also be well validated from the PV analysis.

Abstract:
In recent years, China has paid an increasing amount of attention to improving urban and rural drinking water safety, an important aspect of building a healthy and stable society. This study analyzed countermeasures to promote drinking water safety in Turpan City of Shanshan County, in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region. First, we considered the current state of drinking water safety in Shanshan, including issues such as pollution, outdated water treatment technologies, leakage in the water supply pipe network, insufficient emergency management capability in urban areas, and low water supply guarantee rates in rural areas due to poor construction standards. Second, the quantity of guaranteed water resources was estimated; on this basis, an ideal distribution of regional water plants and water supply network needs for the optimal allocation of water resources is suggested. Third, a water purification program was developed to solve untreated water quality problems, including centralized and decentralized water quality treatments alongside intelligent water flow control processes. Water resource conservation and risk control measures are also proposed in order to promote the security of drinking water; equipment updates, and the establishment of an intelligent water management platform are also suggested.

Abstract:
Abstract. The purpose of this study was to enhance the accuracy of numerical wave forecasts through data assimilation during typhoon period. A sequential data assimilation scheme was modified to enable its use with partitions of directional wave spectra. The performance of the system was investigated with respect to operational applications specifically for typhoon wave. Two typhoons that occurred in 2006 around Taiwan (Kaemi and Shanshan) were used for this case study. The proposed data assimilation method increased the forecast accuracy in terms of wave parameters, such as wave height and period. After assimilation, the shapes of directional spectra were much closer to those reported from independent observations.

Abstract:
This article develops the concept of “Soviet environmental subjectivity.” Taking a theoretical step toward comparative political ecology and neo-materialism, it makes the case that engagement with the natural environment comprised a potent, but underappreciated, determinant of Soviet subjectivity. To elaborate this argument, the article examines the life stories of three individuals who spent time in a common region in the far north: ornithologist Oleg Semenov-Tian-Shanskii, geologist Leonid Potemkin, and aspiring ballerina turned technician and prisoner Inna Tartakovskaia. Their lives reveal certain distinguishing features of Soviet environmental subjectivities, including a common desire to both exploit and protect the environment and a tendency for the state's punitive use of harsh natural conditions to alter subjective experiences. Furthermore, the very different paths of these individuals—one became an environmentalist, one defended the Soviet treatment of the natural world, and one did not actively engage in environmental politics—indicate the possible pervasiveness of environmental subjectivities in the Soviet Union.
