Abstract ‘Has anyone noticed that Sterne seems to have overreached himself and slipped in Volume Two, Chapter 8 of Tristram Shandy?’ Barbara Hardy asks, in Notes and Queries. Her query, and the explanatory note she offers, lead into a beguiling Shandean brain-twister. The ‘slip’ (which is chronological) is the more remarkable in that Sterne is a writer obsessively concerned with time in his novel. But is it, in fact, a slip? The passage in question is found on page 83 of the World’s Classics edition. At last the hero, Tristram, is about to be born. It has been a long wait for would-be readers

The weight of each rotor shaft, the unbalance response, and the response due to the transmission error are minimized simultaneously under the critical speed constraints. The design variables are the inner radii of the shaft, the stiffness of bearings, and the gear mesh stiffness. Mass unbalance commonly causes vibration of rotor-bearing systems. Lumped mass modeling of unbalance was adapted in most previous research. The lumped unbalance assumption is adequate for thin disks or impellers, but not for thick disks or shafts. Lee et al. (1993) proposed that the unbalance of shafts should be continuously distributed. Balancing methods based on discrete unbalance models may not be very appropriate for rotors with distributed unbalance. Supercritical operation was once viewed as impractical, however, a number of today’s production gas turbines operate in this mode.
