Abstract:
Many studies have shown that dieting behaviour is popular amongst adolescent girls and there is a growing body of researchw hich suggests that similar patterns of dieting behaviour can be found in girls as young as 9 or 10. Although adolescent dieting is common relatively little is known about the reasons for its emergence. Previous research by Pike and Rodin (1991) found higher levels of weight concern and dissatisfactions with family functioning in mothers of eating disordered adolescent girls. The present study sought to extend this research by examining the maternal influences on weight and dieting concerns at a younger age. The present study investigated dieting motivation and underlying attitudes to weight and shape between mothers and their young adolescent daughters. Twenty girls with high dietary restraint scores were interviewed in addition to twenty girls whose restraint score fell on or below the mean. The mothers of all forty subjects were also interviewed and assessments were completed including dietary restraint, body esteem, self-esteem and body figure preferences and the family enviromnent scale. The high restraint girls reported being more dissatisfied with their body shape and tended to have lower body esteem compared to the comparison group of girls. These differences were not merely a reflection of higher body weight. Although no relationship was found between the mothers' and daughters' restraint scores the mother daughter relationship did appear to be significant in other ways. The high restraint mothers and daughters both had low body esteem scores and desired to lose more weight than the comparison group of girls and mothers. Family functioning appeared to be different between the two groups. The high restraint mothers and daughters perceived the family to be less cohesive, to have lower levels of organisation and place less emphasis on moral and religious issues. This study has reinforced the growing recognition that pre-adolescent girls may hold high dieting motivation. It has also highlighted the significance of the family system and mother-daughter relationship in the development of disordered eating. The parallel with the findings of Pike and Rodin supports the role that mothers may play in the transmission of cultural values regarding weight, shape and appearance. Importantly it also places dieting within a wider context of dissatisfaction with family functioning. Clinicians should be aware of these issues as they have important implications for early intervention and prevention of eating disorders.

Ugail, Hassan. "Method of boundary based smooth shape design." ACTA Press, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10454/2685.

Full text
Abstract:
The discussion in this paper focuses on how boundary based smooth shape design can be carried out. For this we treat surface generation as a mathematical boundary-value problem. In particular, we utilize elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) of arbitrary order. Using the methodology outlined here a designer can therefore generate the geometry of shapes satisfying an arbitrary set of boundary conditions. The boundary conditions for the chosen PDE can be specified as curves in 3-space defining the profile geometry of the shape. We show how a compact analytic solution for the chosen arbitrary order PDE can be formulated enabling complex shapes to be designed and manipulated in real time. This solution scheme, although analytic, satisfies exactly, even in the case of general boundary conditions, where the resulting surface has a closed form representation allowing real time shape manipulation. In order to enable users to appreciate the powerful shape design and manipulation capability of the method, we present a set of practical examples.

Masangkay, Marissa Y. "Values That Shape the Social Morphology of the Town Center in Binan, Laguna, Philippines." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31991.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was conducted to identify how daily use rituals affect function, values, and symbolic meanings residents attach to the town center of Biñan Laguna, Philippines. If values and meanings affect the transformations of the built environment, how are social and cultural values related to the temporal and spatial use of the town center? Furthermore, what are the symbolic meanings that the residents attach to the town center? This exploratory study attempts to investigate the morphological changes of the physical and social aspects of the town center's built form. The physical aspect focuses on the function or use and morphological changes of the town center. The social aspect focuses on the symbolic value and associational meaning of the town center to town residents. Other studies on plazas and town centers have only concentrated on site observations, personal interviews, surveys, and urban morphological studies respectively. While these methods show significant results, the focus becomes isolated either only on the users or the built environment or users and the built environment in a confined synchonic analysis. This exploratory study will bridge the gap between the users and the built environment by employing the diachronic analysis using the following methods: personal interviews, site observations, behavioral mapping, and urban morphological analysis. The first three methods deal with the present, and the last method deals with the past, all of which would provide a basis of understanding for future decisions on the built environment. The results show that a hierarchy of religious, economic, and political values is related to daily use rituals of the town center. Likewise, the spatial use of the town center shows its relevance to these rituals. While the results of values show that religion is on top of the hierarchy, the results of symbolic associations reveal that the town center is synonymous to the public market, hence, placing economic activity on top of the hierarchy. This research can provide a model for further investigation and stimulate more comprehensive studies of users' values, meanings, and use of other plazas and town centers since data on Philippine plazas and town centers are so limited. This study could also serve as a model for inventory and collection of data resources for similar towns in the Philippines on which information is extremely deficient. Designers and urban planners can utilize this research project as a source of information and understanding for future design and planning initiatives that focus on social morphology of town centers undergoing suburbanization.<br>Master of Landscape Architecture

Engelbertz, Sira. "Values in Antarctica: Discourse Analyses of Two Topical Issues in Antarctic Policy." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Gateway Antarctica, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/10436.

Full text
Abstract:
In light of growing international awareness and interests in the ‘frozen continent’ of Antarctica, the topic of Values in Antarctica has recently gained more research interest. Due to the complexity of the concept of value, values in Antarctica have been approached from many different perspectives, including Antarctic wilderness and aesthetic values, values manifested in Antarctic law or value based behavioural changes through the Antarctic experience. The present thesis addresses values as human connections to Antarctica with a focus on Antarctic policy-making. The investigation contained three analytical stages that built on each other. The first stage has been an interdisciplinary literature review examining what values are and how values can be studied, but also considered values in the context of environment, human behaviour and policy. Value and value-related concepts were selected in view of a potential application to the Antarctic. The second analytical stage involved a general framework analysis of the Antarctic Treaty System to identify key elements and structures in the system suitable for a study of Antarctic values, and to develop the research questions. The third stage of analysis included empirical investigations of two Antarctic case studies. Key elements that influence the Antarctic Treaty System in a way that is relevant for a study of Antarctic values include external factors and events, action situations and actors participating in these action situations. Antarctic Treaty Meeting of Experts appeared as an action situation particularly suitable for a study of Antarctic values. The last two Antarctic Treaty Meeting of Experts on ship-borne tourism and climate change have been chosen as case studies, presenting two topical issues in Antarctic policy. Using discourse analysis based on documents submitted to the meetings and the meetings’ reports, values that are driving the discourses were to be identified through structures and patterns in the discourses. Further, based on the discourse analysis following three research questions were to be answered: What role is ascribed to Antarctica concerning contemporary issues? Where and why do conflicts arise in the ATS policy-making process that are based on conflicting values? What changes in the underlying belief-systems are driving policy-making processes and what has caused the change? Based on the literature, values are defined as internalised codes that affect behaviour and include judgements on what is good and desirable. Through the framework analysis it was identified that Antarctic policy involves a multi-layered system of different value systems, which was considered in the two case studies. For both case studies, values in the discourses were mostly identified based on Schwartz’s basic human value theory. The most prominent human value that drives both the ship-born tourism and the climate change discourse is security. Both discourses are further motivated by the conservation of the Antarctic environment and its associated ecosystems. Other values, such as power and conformity with rules were also clearly expressed in the discourses. With regard to the research questions, both case studies discussed Antarctica from two different perspectives, as a hazardous place for human activities and as a place vulnerable to any kind of changes. Conflicts in the ship-borne tourism discourse were more obvious, while the climate change discourse within the expert meeting proceeded in consensus. Value-based changes that are evident in changes in belief-systems underlying Antarctic policy-making could not be identified. This thesis argues, based on careful consideration of documents, that values play a crucial role in Antarctic policy-making at a number of different scales: individuals, political actors, and governmental levels. Values were found to be at the core of most, if not all, conflicts within the Antarctic system. Finally, this thesis provides the first understanding of the values held by the various stakeholders involved in governing and use of the Antarctic, which is crucial for further decision-making and research.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates performative values of garments and objects in relation to space. It aims to show the potential of using abstract garments and objects as choreographers and communicators for dance performance. The concept of creating garments that act as indicators for movement in contemporary dance is insufficiently explored. This research will provide further knowledge of how one can use garments and objects to extend the body and therefore reach unexplored movement territory. Furthermore this study is made with a fashion research perspective and strives to provide an alternative to fashion that is experienced instead of consumed. #performativefashion First different investigations were made to get a deeper understanding of what such work tells us about the relationship between objects, body and space. Then a selection of pieces were finalized in order to show their performative and communicative potential. The methods used in the project were structured by experiments built on restriction and interaction. The tests were made in collaboration with a professional dancer. In the experiments, the body has to overcome a restriction. The limitation is transformed into possibilities that generates new movements, shapes and communication. In conclusion, this research can help change our perception of objects and space. It will also provide more information about how to explore the potential of garments as directors for dance performance.

Abstract:
FundaÃÃo de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do CearÃ<br>The economic values for traits of a meet sheep production system were calculated using Morada Nova hair sheep, raised under the conditions of native pasture in the Brazilian semi-arid region, as model. These economic weights were estimated using the equation of profit, profit = revenue â costs, after increase by one unit and 1% for each trait, evaluated on the average of the others. Whereas 1% increase in the trait, the economic values for lambing percentage (LP), litter size (LS), lambs mortality (LM), yearling mortality (YM), ewes and rams mortality (AM), female slaughter weight (FSW), male slaughter weight (MSW), ewe adult weight (EAW), ram adult weight (RW), carcass yield (CY), number of lambings per year (NLY), age at first lambing (AFL) and number of anthelminthic doses used per year (AC) were 1,439, 1,439, -0,254, -0,110, -0,054, 0,487, 0,767, -0,172, 0,005, 1,523, 1,439, -0,258 and -0,025, respectively, expressed in Brazilian currency (R$) per ewe per year. The traits that showed greater economic importance were CY, NLY, LP and LS. The traits that showed lower economic values were: RW, AC and AM. The production system with Morada Nova sheep grazing native âcaatingaâ pasture in Brazilian Northeast, exclusively for meat production, is profitable when taking into account all costs of production, including that of family labour. Carcass yield was shown to be an important selection objective. As it is expressed when the animal is slaughtered, further studies need to be carried out with this population to aid in the choice of appropriate selection criteria for the improvement of this trait.<br>Os valores econÃmicos para caracterÃsticas de produÃÃo de carne de ovinos foram calculados considerando-se como modelo o sistema de produÃÃo com a raÃa Morada Nova, criada sob as condiÃÃes de pastagem nativa do semi-Ãrido brasileiro. Sharp, Kristy-Lee. "Internet's influence on the marketing activities of South African companies / Kristy-Lee Sharp." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10358.

Full text
Abstract:
The Internet is one of the most advanced technologies of modern times and it is diffusing at an exponential rate amongst business-to-consumer and business-to-business organisations. This has resulted in it becoming an irrevocable and an unstoppable trend, thereby making it vital for companies to incorporate it into their businesses. The Internet, Internet technologies and Internet services, particularly the Web, are widely acknowledged to have had and to continue to have a considerable impact on the practice of marketing. The adoption of the Internet and the Web is an independent variable influencing two interrelated aspects of the marketing function, namely the company’s conceptualisation of its marketing activities and the definition of its markets, which together directly influence the creation of greater customer value. Although research studies regarding the Internet’s impact on marketing conducted in the past in different countries and at different times produced quite similar trends in responses, advances in information technology (IT) and the increased Internet usage since the late 1990s necessitated reinvestigating marketers’ perceptions as to the changes in market practices brought about by the Internet. This study sought to determine the changes arising from the Internet in the conceptualisation of marketing activities, the definition of markets and the creation of greater customer value, based on a literature review and on empirical evidence founded on the opinions of South African marketing practitioners. The purpose of this study was to determine the South African marketing practitioners’ perceptions of the Internet’s influence on the practice of marketing. Five focal questions were asked and answered by the study: 1. How has the Internet changed the way that companies conceptualise their marketing activities? 2. How has the Internet changed the way that companies define their markets? 3. How has the Internet changed the way that companies create value for their customers? 4. To what extent have South African marketers’ perceptions of the influence of the Internet on marketing changed from the late 1990s to 2011? 5. To what extent do South African marketers’ perceptions of the influence of the Internet on marketing differ to those in studies conducted in Australia in 2001(Leong, Ewing & Pitt, 2003) and in Iran in 2007 (Ghazisaeedi, Pitt & Chaharsooghi, 2007)? For this study, the target population comprised South African marketing practitioners. The sampling frame consisted of the top 200 South African companies of 2009, ranked according to turnover, listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), as published by the Financial Mail (2009). A non-probability, judgment sample of the 100 of these top South African companies was taken in April 2011. The study was conducted without replacement sampling. The telephone directory was used to obtain the telephone numbers of these companies so that the secretaries could be contacted to obtain the particulars of the marketing managers or marketing directors of the companies and permission to forward the questionnaire to the respective individuals. A structure self-administered questionnaire was then be emailed to those respondents from whom telephonic permission had been obtained. The questionnaire requested respondents to indicate on a five-point Likert scale their perceptions as to the extent to which the Internet influences the marketing practices within their company on 31 items divided into the three constructs of re-conceptualising marketing activities, changing market definition and creating greater customer value. In addition, the respondents were asked to provide certain demographic data. The findings indicate that the Internet has changed the way companies conceptualise their marketing activities, define their markets and create value for their customers in a variety of ways. When comparing this study against the results of the other three studies it is evident, that between the 1997 and the 2011 South African study and the 2001 Australian study and the 2011 South African study, the respondents did not vary significantly in their perceptions towards the items in each of the three constructs and the overall scale. Hence, the differences between the mean scores of the two studies concerning the three constructs and the overall scale are both statistically and practically non-significant. When comparing the 2005 Iranian study against the 2011 South African, the results show that for both the first construct and the overall scale there is a significant statistical difference at p < 0.05. Concerning to Construct 1, the extent to which the Internet has changed the way that companies conceptualise their marketing activities, a significant statistical difference exists between the two studies, with p = 0.002 < 0.05. Furthermore, with regard to the overall scale, the Internet’s influence on the marketing activities of companies, a significant statistical difference exists between the two studies, with p = 0.046 < 0.05. With the exception of Construct 1 and the overall scale, there is no significant statistical difference between the 2005 Iranian and the 2011 South African studies on Construct 2 and Construct 3. These results indicate that the respondents from the two studies conducted in Iran in 2005 and more recently in South Africa in 2011 did not vary significantly in their perceptions towards items in the second construct and the third construct. In order to assess whether there was a significant practical difference in the item means between the two studies, Cohen’s D-statistic was used. There is a small effect, moving toward practical significance on Construct 1 (D = 0.422) and the overall scale (D = 0.268). From this, it is evident that all main areas of marketing are being significantly influenced by the Internet. Therefore, Internet marketing has become a business imperative owing to it being an irrevocable and an unstoppable trend and, as a result, companies must make a concerted effort to collaborate the technologies available to them to avoid failure in the new digital business environment.<br>MCom, Marketing Management, North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2012

Abstract:
Companies all over the world are seeking ways to address sustainability related issues, both to meet external expectations and as a way to find opportunities for growth and innovation. Many attempts have been made in providing descriptions and guidance in how sustainability can be adopted within corporations. However, much of earlier research has focused on the manufacturing industry where materials and production processes are central in the concept. How sustainability can be incorporated in service industries, more specifically by IT service providers (ITSPs), is a somewhat unexplored area even though the potential for sustainability related risks as well as opportunities are high. Previous research in this area that has set out to construct models of this phenomenon has not managed to consider the characteristics of  ITservice providers to the fullest. This study has investigated how ITSPs can incorporate sustainability into business practices through a multiple-case study with four ITSP and one technical consulting company. The data has been collected through interviews and document analysis, and analyzed both separately nd by comparison. Additional interviews were held with experts and professionals with relevant knowledge to strengthen the findings. This study resulted in model that can serve as an analytical tool and presentation format  hen incorporating sustainability in business practices within the IT Professional service industry. The results showed that incorporation of sustainability in practices needs to be divided in two main categories; incorporating sustainability in internal operations and incorporating sustainability in customer offerings. Within these categories the study identified a number of activities that ITSPs can undertake to incorporate sustainability and what outcomes they may have. It was concluded that the activities in within internal operations were primarily focused n building trust towards customers. The study also showed that incorporating  ustainability in customer offerings can be done to different extent with different outcomes. The critical activities to successfully incorporate sustainability in customer offerings has been described in the study and visualized in a 3-level map to further provide guidance. A main finding within this category was that interaction with the customer is crucial to successfully deploy service offerings that incorporate sustainability. The results can be generalized to other ITSPs in similar settings and parts can also be argued to be adoptable to other companies in the professional service industry that rely on intense technology.

Good, Nathan Andrew. "Multi-Objective Design Optimization Considering Uncertainty in a Multi-Disciplinary Ship Synthesis Model." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34532.

Full text
Abstract:
Multi-disciplinary ship synthesis models and multi-objective optimization techniques are increasingly being used in ship design. Multi-disciplinary models allow designers to break away from the traditional design spiral approach and focus on searching the design space for the best overall design instead of the best discipline-specific design. Complex design problems such as these often have high levels of uncertainty associated with them, and since most optimization algorithms tend to push solutions to constraint boundaries, the calculated "best" solution might be infeasible if there are minor uncertainties related to the model or problem definition. Consequently, there is a need to address uncertainty in optimization problems to produce effective and reliable results. This thesis focuses on adding a third objective, uncertainty, to the effectiveness and cost objectives already present in a multi-disciplinary ship synthesis model. Uncertainty is quantified using a "confidence of success" (CoS) calculation based on the mean value method. CoS is the probability that a design will satisfy all constraints and meet performance objectives. This work proves that the CoS concept can be applied to synthesis models to estimate uncertainty early in the design process. Multiple sources of uncertainty are realistically quantified and represented in the model in order to investigate their relative importance to the overall uncertainty. This work also presents methods to encourage a uniform distribution of points across the Pareto front. With a well defined front, designs can be selected and refined using a gradient based optimization algorithm to optimize a single objective while holding the others fixed.<br>Master of Science

Hoffman, Joel Christopher. "Natal-river to estuary migration of American shad: estimating the value of essential rearing habitat." W&M ScholarWorks, 2006. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539791562.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this study was to identify important river and estuary habitats of young American shad by estimating their value to fish production. American shad populations across the Atlantic coast have been in decline since the 1800s due, in part, to restricted access to habitat and habitat loss. The study demonstrates that production and year-class strength of Mattaponi River American shad are influenced by allochthonous subsidies from riparian and terrestrial ecosystems, thus habitat quality is related to the watershed's health, and that Chesapeake Bay is an important overwintering habitat for juveniles. Specifically, I characterized production dynamics and biogeochemical processes in the Mattaponi River, a tributary of the York River and the most productive American shad nursery in Virginia's portion of Chesapeake Bay; quantified the contribution of autochthonous and allochthonous organic matter (OM) to zooplankton, macroinvertebrates, and young American shad in the Mattaponi River; identified the trophic pathways that support American shad production within river and estuary habitats during ontogeny; and determined the main habitats within the York River system, from the larval stage to their ocean migration. Mattaponi River production dynamics were strongly influenced by river discharge; during periods of high discharge, primary production was suppressed and greater than 60% of zooplankton, macroinvertebrates and larval American shad production was supported by allochthonous OM. Further, OM concentration, plankton density, and juvenile American shad indices were elevated, demonstrating that allochthonous OM subsidizes the metazoan food web and fish production. Spatial segregation of juveniles rearing in the freshwater nursery zone was identified through a novel application of a stable isotope turnover model; juveniles were shown to reside in habitats of 5-10 river km for a month or longer. These fish emigrate from the nursery zone in November and December, residing and feeding in the York River estuary and Chesapeake Bay before migrating to the ocean in February through April. Variable emigration strategies were observed; most American shad likely emigrated at 2-5 g and spent weeks to months in the estuary, however a few emigrated at habitat.

The notion of community remains an important concern, for individuals, in urban planning practice, and more recently in consumer research. This thesis research explores community at the junction of these areas, through a grounded study of the consumption practices of a place based consumer tribe that exists within an inner city suburb undergoing urban renewal. The process of urban renewal is positioned as a means to revitalise under-utilised inner city areas, and broaden opportunities for city residents and visitors to experience an inner city lifestyle. It can also be seen as a standardising project that commodifies diversity and devalues existing communities and is associated with gentrification. Both perspectives can obscure the possibility that consumption practices can be used to build community like connections. This thesis applies a framework of literature from marketing and consumer research to an urban renewal context, to explore this area of ambiguity. The result of this exploration is a grounded theory of assuming a 'local' identity through consumption experiences in servicescapes. This thesis argues that consumers seek out individual servicescapes for the value experiences that they offer, which can be identity defining. In particular the interaction generated through these experiences can work to build tribal connections to, and within, that servicescape. These consumption experiences can also be used to make assumptions regarding the identity of others; both of the businesses themselves, and the individuals encountered within them. The tribal connections these experiences may generate can have individual benefits in that they can build into existing social networks, but through repetition and shared experiences, may also link an individual to a broader place based community. This thesis also proposes that servicescapes can work to encourage this process, by encouraging identity defining consumption experiences. Like individuals, businesses can come to be assumed to be tribe members and this 'localness' can become a symbolic operant resource that is valued by the tribe. As key sites in which members of the 'local' tribe reinforce their commitment to the tribe, locally owned businesses may benefit by being more likely to be chosen over their 'non-local' competitors. However, as an element of their tribal membership these businesses have a moral responsibility to reinforce the collective ethic of the tribe and assist in integrating new tribe members. In this way they can become ambassadors for the identity of the community, communicating the shared values of the tribe to members and non-members alike. Such a place based tribe is primarily based on public interaction, thus the servicescapes and public spaces that link them can come to work as a theatre in which the tribe is manifested and its rituals performed. As the experience of a sense of shared value is repeated across a range of geographically united servicescapes, this shared experience can be displaced from any one servicescape and generalised into a localness experience that is grounded within the geographic community. It is here that the physical and ideological aspects of the community combine, and the experienced value of a shared identity that originated in a servicescape based consumption experience can come to symbolise the values of the greater community itself. These research findings have implications for inner city urban renewal developments, suggesting that the increased availability of consumption activities that are associated with urban renewal may also be considered as an increased opportunity to build place based consumer tribes. This thesis proposes ways of encouraging this process.

KIM, DONG-HYUK. "Bayesian Econometrics for Auction Models." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/193663.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation develops Bayesian methods to analyze data from auctions and produce policy recommendations for auction design. The essay, "Auction Design Using Bayesian Methods," proposes a decision theoretic method to choose a reserve price in an auction using data from past auctions. Our method formally incorporates parameter uncertainty and the payoff structure into the decision procedure. When the sample size is modest, it produces higher expected revenue than the plug-in methods. Monte Carlo evidence for this is provided. The second essay, "Flexible Bayesian Analysis of First Price Auctions Using Simulated Likelihood," develops an empirical framework that fully exploits all the shape restrictions arising from economic theory: bidding monotonicity and density affiliation. We directly model the valuation density so that bidding monotonicity is automatically satisfied, and restrict the parameter space to rule out all the nonaffiliated densities. Our method uses a simulated likelihood to allow for a very exible specification, but the posterior analysis is exact for the chosen likelihood. Our method controls the smoothness and tail behavior of the valuation density and provides a decision theoretic framework for auction design. We reanalyze a dataset of auctions for drilling rights in the Outer Continental Shelf that has been widely used in past studies. Our approach gives significantly different policy prescriptions on the choice of reserve price than previous methods, suggesting the importance of the theoretical shape restrictions. Lastly, in the essay, "Simple Approximation Methods for Bayesian Auction Design," we propose simple approximation methods for Bayesian decision making in auction design problems. Asymptotic posterior distributions replace the true posteriors in the Bayesian decision framework, which are typically a Gaussian model (second price auction) or a shifted exponential model (first price auction). Our method first approximates the posterior payoff using the limiting models and then maximizes the approximate posterior payoff. Both the approximate and exact Bayes rules converge to the true revenue maximizing reserve price under certain conditions. Monte Carlo studies show that my method closely approximates the exact procedure even for fairly small samples.

Abstract:
Introduction The paradigm shift in manufacturing that Industry 4.0 brings forth with new advanced technologies and the rapid growth of sensing and controlling technologies enable further visualization and optimization that can contribute to achievingimproved decision-making in manufacturing. A significant new capability is the ability to construct a Digital Twinthat connects the physical and virtual space. However, there are still confusion and obscurity regarding what Digital Twinis and how it can becreated and then used to create value for the company. Therefor the purpose of the thesis is to examine how manufacturing companies can utilize the implementation of Digital Twinand assess Digital Twinin a shop-floor. ➢RQ1: How can DT be beneficial to increase business value in a manufacturing company? ➢RQ2: What changes need to be done in the shop-floor to implement Digital Twin? Methodology A literature review was conducted to provide previous researchand contextwithin the area of Digital Twin. A multiple-case studywas performed at three case companies to gain meaningful insight from a real-world perspective, semi-structured interviews, dialogs, and observations were conductedat the case companies. The analysis was then performed by examining similarities, and dissimilarities between theoretical and empirical data, as well as opportunities in theoretical findings that correspond with challenges in empirical findings. Frame of Reference The literature review increased the authors’ understanding of the research topic and gave context to the concept of Digital Twin. The review is mainly focused on the Digital Twintechnologyand how it is constructed, as well as the applicationsareas. Empirical Findings The empirical findings provide an overview of boththe current and future state of the case companies in relation to organizational, operational, and technological factors. Additionally, it provides a deeper understanding of how shop-floor management is designed at one of the case companies. Analysis The combination of the Frame of Reference and Empirical Findings contributewith important insight on the potential benefits that can be created through the utilizationof Digital Twin, as well as what is requiredin the shop-floor to enable implementation ofDigital Twin. Conclusions The value that can be created utilizing Digital Twinis outlinedand a clearer definition is proposed to avoid misunderstandings and confusion. Requirements that need to be achieved for a successful implementation arecovered as well. A future recommendation is measuring resources and effort in relation to the created value of a Digital Twin.

Abstract:
Energy conservation is a major concern in todays data centers, which are the 21st century data processing factories, and where large and complex software systems such as distributed data management stores run and serve billions of users. The two main drivers of this major concern are the pollution impact data centers have on the environment due to their waste heat, and the expensive cost data centers incur due to their enormous energy demand. Among the many subsystems of data centers, the storage system is one of the main sources of energy consumption. Among the many types of storage systems, key/value stores happen to be the widely used in the data centers. In this work, I investigate energy saving techniques that enable a consistent hash based key/value store save energy during low activity times, and whenever there is an opportunity to reuse the waste heat of data centers.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents methods for fabricating MicroElectroMechanical System (MEMS) actuators and high-flow gas microvalves using wafer-level integration of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) in the form of wires and sheets. The work output per volume of SMA actuators exceeds that of other microactuation mechanisms, such as electrostatic, magnetic and piezoelectric actuation, by more than an order of magnitude, making SMA actuators highly promising for applications requiring high forces and large displacements. The use of SMAs in MEMS has so far been limited, partially due to a lack of cost efficient and reliable wafer-level integration approaches. This thesis presents new methods for wafer-level integration of nickel-titanium SMA sheets and wires. For SMA sheets, a technique for the integration of patterned SMA sheets to silicon wafers using gold-silicon eutectic bonding is demonstrated. A method for selective release of gold-silicon eutectically bonded microstructures by localized electrochemical etching, is also presented. For SMA wires, alignment and placement of NiTi wires is demonstrated forboth a manual approach, using specially built wire frame tools, and a semiautomatic approach, using a commercially available wire bonder. Methods for fixing wires to wafers using either polymers, nickel electroplating or mechanical silicon clamps are also shown. Nickel electroplating offers the most promising permanent fixing technique, since both a strong mechanical and good electrical connection to the wire is achieved during the same process step. Resistively heated microactuators are also fabricated by integrating prestrained SMA wires onto silicon cantilevers. These microactuators exhibit displacements that are among the highest yet reported. The actuators also feature a relatively low power consumption and high reliability during longterm cycling. New designs for gas microvalves are presented and valves using both SMA sheets and SMA wires for actuation are fabricated. The SMA-sheet microvalve exhibits a pneumatic performance per footprint area, three times higher than that of previous microvalves. The SMA-wire-actuated microvalve also allows control of high gas flows and in addition, offers benefits of lowvoltage actuation and low overall power consumption.<br>QC 20120514

Abstract:
This thesis provides a means to estimate the physical and performance characteristics of a preliminary cruise ship design. The techniques utilized to estimate these characteristics are showcased in the user-friendly interface known as the Cruise Ship Analysis Tool (CSAT). Using the CSAT, the implications that design feature decisions in the preliminary design stage have on a cruise ship’s profitability is analyzed. Then, the most profitable design feature assemblage among a finite number of varying design feature combinations is estimated and compared among cruise ship designs with different passenger carrying capacities. Profitability is analyzed using the measure of merit (MOM) known as net present value (NPV). If a preliminary cruise ship design has a positive NPV at a reliable rate of return and ship operating life, the design is considered to be a profitable investment if implemented. The greater the NPV, the more profitable the investment is considered to be.

Abstract:
The objective of this work is to study what brings a sick person to formulate a refusal of treatment, based on a three-pronged approach. One of the patient and his relatives, one of professionals faced with this refusal, and one of a multi-professional ethics reflection group, bringing together representatives of humanities and social sciences, as well as “ordinary citizens”, bringing the outside eye of the city. Looking for the meaning of a refusal consists of analyzing and decoding a willingness of the person that something happens or does not happen, and corresponds to the dialectic of the gift and acceptance of the care. To refuse a treatment doesn’t mean refusing care. Situations of refusal pave the way for reflection about our individual and collective behavior, our doubts, our uncertainties as well as conflicting values. This work explores the complexity of such problems encountered in daily clinical practice, in order to deepen the questioning about the interaction played between the different actors. It also shows how important it is to working methods that promote the ethics of dialogue. Considering the choices faced by those who assume the responsibility for the decision, the question arises of which resources to use to promote ethical reflection, avoiding the arbitrary nature of personal convictions

Abstract:
This Dissertation is devoted to the study of some integral operators arising in parabolic potential theory which are relevant in order to analyze boundary value problems for the heat equation subject to a singular perturbation of the domain by exploiting a known functional analytic approach for elliptic problems, and to the analysis of some elliptic perturbation problems with a potential theoretic approach. The Dissertation is divided into two independent parts. In the first part (Chapters 1-3) we produce new results in parabolic potential theory and, in particular, we study the mapping properties of some integral operators associated with layer heat potentials, while in the second part (Chapter 4) we investigate the behavior of an elliptic boundary value problem under domain perturbation with a potential theoretic approach. The Dissertation is organized as follows. In Chapter 1 we introduce a normed class of time dependent weakly singular kernels and we prove results of joint continuity of some parabolic integral operators upon variation both of the kernel in the above class and of the density function. Moreover we apply these results to some integral operators related to layer heat potentials. In Chapter 2 we prove an explicit formula for the tangential derivatives of the double layer heat potentials and we prove a regularizing property of the integral operator associated with the double layer heat potential. In Chapter 3 we consider space-periodic layer heat potentials and we solve some periodic boundary value problems for the heat equation. Finally, Chapter 4 is devoted to the study of the behavior of the longitudinal permeability of a periodic array of cylinders upon the perturbation of the periodicity structure and of the cross sections of the cylinders.

Abstract:
A CONWIP (Constant Work-In-Progress) system is basically a hybrid system with a PUSH-PULL interface at the first machine in the line. This research addresses the most general case of a cyclic CONWIP system by incorporating two additional constraints over earlier studies namely; stochastic processing times and limited intermediate storage. One of the main issues in the design of a CONWIP system is the WIP level 'M', to be maintained. This research proposes an iterative procedure to determine this optimal level. The second main issue is the optimization of the line by determining an appropriate job sequence. This research assumes a 'permutational' scheduling policy and proposes an iterative approach to find the best sequence. The approach utilizes a controlled enumerative approach called the Fast Insertion Heuristic (FIH) coupled with a method to appraise the quality of every enumeration at each iteration. This is done by using a modified version of the Floyd's algorithm, to determine the cycle time (or Flow time) of a partial/full solution. The performance measures considered are the Flow time and the Interdeparture time (inverse of throughput). Finally, both the methods suggested for the two subproblems, are tested through computer implementations to reveal their proficiency.<br>Master of Science

However, U-Commerce is still in its infancy for most enterprises although it extended from M-Commerce. The knowledge about how the business model and the enabling technology together create the business for inter and intra customers is till vague, while it is important for the success of U-Commerce. Therefore, in this study, we conduct the secondary data analysis and use a value shop model to analyze what determinates the value creation for the customers and what the enabling core components are. The findings of this study provide a great insight for better understanding the value configuration of U-commerce and a leading index for the enterprise to constructing business model and developing IT core components when implementing the U-commerce.

The key features are that the grid-shop can service simple shopper and seller of goods at the same time. The types of the grid-shops include merchandise and handicraft. Laddering method in the qualitative research is applied for the Means-End Chain (MEC) model to build content codes connecting attributes, consequence and values for the grid-shop consumers and tenants. The data were collected through one-to-one, in-depth personal interviews of 120 grid-shop consumers and tenants with open-ended questionnaires. Result of the research: 13 product attributes, 15 consumption consequences and 17 values for consumers of the grid-shop are found. 10 product attributes, 12 consumption consequences and 11 values for tenants of the grid-shop are found. All types of the consumers pursue the “pleasure”, “worth”, “satisfied” and “newfangled” experiences. In addition, the consumers of the merchandise grid-shop respect “efficient” and the consumers of the handicraft grid-shop respect “unique”. All types of the tenants pursue the “pleasure”, “worth” and “reassured” experiences. For tenants of merchandise grid-shop, they additionally respect “efficient”. And, for tenants of handicraft grid-shop, they additionally respect “identity” and “self-esteem”. The merchandise and handicraft grid-shop reveals different final values and the value hierarchies. The value path of “worth” is stable for the consumers. Instead, the value path of “pleasure” is stable for the tenants. Finally, suggestion for the practical operation and future research direction are given.

碩士<br>國立虎尾科技大學<br>資訊管理研究所<br>95<br>Under fast development of the Internet, E-shops have become an important marketing channel. Despite the growth of Internet surfers, the population with experiences of shopping online has not grown to a significant level. In addition to the incomplete online shopping environment and security issues, the insufficient understanding of most enterprises about how to manage an E-shop is also the main reason. To provide a seasonable solution to this issue, this study would (1) derive 4 constructs, 16 categories, and 68 key success factors via literature reviews, expert interviews, Focus Group, and Delphi method; (2) establish a value system of E-shops as the basis of assessing the difference in key success factors; (3) integrate the value system and the concept of Kano model to develop Kano value model, so as to get hold of the properties and category of each key factor; (4) apply FAHP (Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process) to present the importance ranking of the 4 constructs and 16 categories as the basis for the staged development of enterprises; and finally; (5) according to the ranking, establish the successful development map for E-shops. It was expected that the research results would serve as a reference for more accurate systemization of E-shops in the process of development and reduce the exploration time and possibility of failure in the process of test and trial.

Abstract:
碩士<br>輔仁大學<br>織品服裝研究所<br>86<br>Due to its unique characteristics, folk clothing represents the culturally most distinctive form among clothing styles. Due to movements promoting indigenous culture, interest in Taiwan folk clothing rose significantly for come time in the 80''s. Unfortunately, this new demand for native clothing was not the result of good management practices but rather due to a short-lived fashion trend. In consequence, the Taiwan folk clothing inclustry fell victim to the more competitive ready-to-wear garment industry. Yet, the Taiwan folk clothing industry is still consiered very important in as much as it symbolizes the spirit of traditional culture. Therefore, the challenge to strengthen the existing Taiwan folk clothing market has become an issue of major importance within this industry. Above all, the need to understand the characteristics of Taiwan folk clothing consumers is decisive. Literature on this topic is very limited. For this reason, more consumer research ought to be generated if managers and administrators in the Taiwan folk clothing industry are to become more successful. This study focus on the consumer needs. The research topics are:(1)the folk clothing value, which could express consumers'' interior need; (2)the shop image, which could influence consumers'' impression of the retail shop''s exterior performance; (3)the service quality, which could measure the consumer purchase loyalty. The aim is to obtain insight into consumers'' emphasis on the three aspects mentioned above. The findings of this study are as follows: As regards the Taiwan folk clothing value area, consumers particulary attach importance to: (1)the handling and design of clothing; (2)whether or not the clothing can provide the wearer with a sense of belonging to his/her respective group; (3)the social status which is represented by the particular garment; (4)the price of the clothing. As regards the shop image and service quality area, consumers focus on: (1)the arrangement of promotion activities; (2)the attitude of shop personnel and operation process; (3)the price and quality of products; (4)the shop''s environment and consumer service; (5)the convenience of shop location. Through factor analysis and cluster analysis consumers could be segmented into three gtoups: the fashion-conscious and active group, the leisure and family-like group and the enthusiastic and ascetic group. All three groups show significant differentiation as to the following aspects of population statistics: career, education, salary and purchase place. Variation analysis revesled significant partial differentiation among folk clothing value, shop image and service quality factors. Based on the above results, suggestions are offered to folk ciothing industry management on the market as a whole as well as on each of the therr target markets.

Abstract:
碩士<br>龍華科技大學<br>商學與管理研究所<br>97<br>With increasingly dynamic and complex economic development contributing to the gradual deterioration of the middle class society, the formation of two extremities in social class, otherwise known as the M-shape society, has facilitated the creation of a new distinctive brand. The emergence of an M-shape brand dictates that the middle-low class will grow to shape the consumer markets’ core under such a social setting. For businesses to profit from this new division, great adjustments would have to be made to the firm’s brand management strategies. The importance of brand recognition and the employment of such factors to one&apos;s advantage will be crucial in creating new luxury goods. Not only so, firms would have to create awareness and maintain a decent public brand image, alongside providing consumers with value-added incentives in low cost and ‘quality-emphasized’ products. Because of this desire for a ‘high quality, low price’ brand under an M-shaped society, this should be the primary focus of marketing an M-shaped brand. This research paper aims to develop new methodologies in brand marketing under an M-shaped society by constructing an understanding of the characteristics of spending in such a society, and will largely be conducted based on current marketing practices and brand analyses. This research paper will approach brand equity and its relevant issues from a luxury value&apos;s perspective, and mainly hopes to determine the underlying cause which affects consumer choice in a M-shaped society.

Abstract:
In Australia, industrial relations research has focused almost exclusively on the major industrial relations institutions and their role in the determination of the rules of the workplace. Local workplace industrial relations and the interaction between worker and representatives and enterprise management has been a neglected area of research. This study attempts to rectify this situation. By focusing attention on the workplace a number of important questions are raised that have not been systematically addressed in Australian industrial relations research. In particular, what, if any, is the role of shop stewards in a centralised system dominated by unions, employers and tribunals organised on a state and national basis? If there is a role for shop stewards, how does this role manifest itself in terms of the stewards’ relationships with members, fellow shop stewards, union officials and management? Finally, what factors explain variations in role perceptions, and how does the adoption of a particular role affect the behaviour of shop stewards? (For complete abstract open the document)

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中山大學<br>資訊管理學系研究所<br>95<br>While mobile technologies and applications are rapidly and widely utilized and adopted in electronic commerce (E-commerce), it is extremely important to better understand the value creation, business model capability and core component capability in mobile commerce (M-commerce). In this study, we conduct the secondary data analysis and use a value shop model to analyze the innovation in technological knowledge, business model, and dynamic capability aspects used in Internet-enabled commerce (I-commerce) versus M-commerce. A set of critical dynamic capabilities for each innovation is then identified. These results provide great insight for practitioners and scholars for enhancing their understanding of M-commerce innovation, and provide guidelines to help practitioners adapt from I-commerce to M-commerce innovation.
