Abstract We use data from a nationally representative study to examine antecedents of entrepreneurial activity in the US among younger (< age 50) and older (≥ age 50) adults using Shapero’s and Sokol’s Model of the “Entrepreneurial Event” (hereafter SEE). The “entrepreneurial event” here refers to the initiation of entrepreneurial behavior. The SEE approach assumes that individuals default to inertia until their lives are disrupted by exogenous factors such as life-changing events (Shapero & Sokol, 1982). The disruptor could be either positive or negative, and has the net effect of

This paper tests the initial Shapero-Sokol model of an entrepreneurial event, as well as expands it through the use of quadratic and moderating effects. Structural equation modelling is applied to a sample of undergraduate students in Croatia that completed a questionnaire in 2019. Findings show that perceived desirability and perceived feasibility have a positive impact on entrepreneurial intentions, whereas the propensity to act has a negative effect. A closer look reveals that there are other significant effects in the model as well. Quadratic effect is positive for perceived desirability a

Shapero (1975, 1982) proposed an Intentionality-based process model of the entrepreneurial event. Entrepreneurial intentions should derive from feasibility and desirability perceptions plus a propensity to act on opportunities. Prior entrepreneurship-related experiences should influence entrepreneurial intentions indirectly through these perceptions. Path analyses found that feasibility and desirability perceptions and propensity to act each proved significant antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions. Perceived feasibility was significantly associated with the breadth of prior exposure. Perce

Purpose This study aims to develop a conceptual framework that integrated insights from Shapero and Sokol (1982)’s model of entrepreneurial event, Bandura (1977)’s social learning theory and clinical psychology to empirically test and discover the underlying mechanism of how attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD) symptoms can influence student entrepreneurial intention. Design/methodology/approach The study uses structural equation modeling with a sample of 2,218 students from 14 universities in Vietnam. Owing to the fact that entrepreneurship is widely considered to be a mechanism for reducing unemployment, the purpose of the study was to assess whether final-year Commerce students in the predominantly rural provinces, the Eastern Cape Province and the Limpopo Province, have the intention to start their own businesses. The study draws heavily from entrepreneurial intent models and focuses on the relationship between three key variables, namely, exposure to entrepreneurship education, awareness of entrepreneurial support and social capital to establish whether they are related to the intention
