Abstract:
The pictorial quotation of a painted or graphic portrait is one of the key intermedial artistic details of belles-lettres about artists. The paper examines the protagonist’s self-portraits in fictional and fictionalized biographical texts about Taras Shevchenko. The use of self-portrait detail in biographical texts across various genres is analyzed from the standpoint of intermedial studies. The functions of self-portraits, their interpretive potential, and the intermedial strategies used in the texts under discussion have been identified and explored.
