Abstract:
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all Saudi universities have adopted e-learning systems to ensure that educational activities continue. Shaqra University adopted a platform called the Shaqra University e-learning platform. This study aimed to identify the factors contributing to the success of that platform in Shaqra University, based on students’ responses. This research has proposed an extension of well-known DeLone and McLean’s Information Systems Success (D&M ISS) model to check and validate the success factors of the Shaqra University platform. The questionnaire was adopted in this study to collect data from students currently enrolled at Shaqra University. One thousand online links to the questionnaire were randomly distributed among current students enrolled in Shaqra University. The results revealed that the instrument adopted in this study was valid and reliable. Also, the results showed that the model was a good fit for the Saudi context. The proposed factors of instructor’s quality, learner quality, and perceived usefulness positively impacted the e-learning platform. On the other hand, the factors information quality, system quality and service quality had no positive impact on the use of the e-learning platform.

Full text
Abstract:
The principal aim of this study is to investigate to what extent the four community colleges operating under the jurisdiction of Shaqra University: Shaqra, Adduwadimi, Huraymila, and Alquwayiyah, meet the needs of Saudi Arabian society. The research method was a qualitative documentary analysis, which involved examining and interpreting official documents. The following are the primary findings of the study:(a) enrollments at the four colleges have fluctuated over the past 3 years (2012-2014); (b) the number of graduates from the four community colleges has steadily decreased, resulting in an abnormally low graduation rate overall; (c) the faculty to student ratios at the community colleges are typically small; and (d) there was a policy of continuous hiring of additional administrators and technicians between 2012 and 2014, with the result that the ratio of administrators and technicians to enrollees has become bloated. Consequently, the continued existence of these community colleges hangs-in-the-balance, and the concerned authorities need to seek urgent resolution to this problem to avoid huge financial losses and wastage on the part of the government. To resolve the on-going problems, the researcher recommends that the four community colleges at Shaqra University be just combined into two, and if necessity requires, retrenchment of faculty and administrators is conducted to achieve the ideal faculty to student ratio and administrator to student ratio. Finally, the researcher concludes that the best model for a community college system that can be adapted to the context of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the American system of community colleges.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to explore the information seeking behaviour of scholars working at Shaqra University in both Arabic and English languages; to investigate if there are differences in the way scholars seek information while using different languages; to identify challenges while seeking information and to describe the approaches followed by the scholars to seek information. The study deployed a quasi-experimental approach. The sample of the study consisted of 20 participants who are affiliated to Shaqra University. Each participant was asked to solve five tasks, which were designed to capture participants’ information seeking behaviour. Think aloud protocol was also used to gather more data from the participants to enrich the collected data and to fully understand scholars’ behavior. The study found that the participants’ information seeking consists of four main stages: identifying the information needs, selecting the keywords, examining the results and filtering the results. The data revealed that there is no difference between information seeking in Arabic and English languages. However, participants who are from a non-Arabic background were more accustomed to searching information in the English language. There are few studies investigating information seeking behavior of Arabic language speakers. Additionally, fewer studies have tried to explore differences in information seeking behavior while using different languages. The value of the current study lies in being the first study that focuses on investigating information seeking behavior at Shaqra University. Additionally, it is one of a few studies that examine cross-language information seeking practices of Arabic language speakers and the obstacles that face them.

Majzoub, Islam. "Effect of Categorizing EFL Shaqra University Students' Writing Errors on Writing Improvement." Technium Social Sciences Journal 26 (December 9, 2021): 804–22. http://dx.doi.org/10.47577/tssj.v26i1.5227.

Abstract:
This paper aims at using a strategy of categorizing EFL Shaqra University students' writing errors and identifying its effect in improving students' writing. The study hypothesized that categorizing students' errors into main headings related to the types of error, frequencies of error, examples of errors, and causes of errors will provide precise insight into the nature of students' errors. Moreover, providing students with models to read and extract the difficult vocabularies from them, understanding their meanings, and using them in their writing will improve students' writing. Hence, the researcher gave 65 female students a title to write about in lecture number one as a pre-test. The title was "women driving in Saudi Arabia", and in lecture number eleven, she gave them a post-tester in the same title after applying the hypothesized teaching strategy. The findings of students' essay analysis in the pre-test proved that students had many grammatical and lexical mistakes but in the post-test the students writing improved significantly in terms of style, diction, developing ideas, spelling, and punctuation. Even their errors decreased from 936 errors in the pre-test to 57 errors in the post-test which indicates the success of the teaching strategy adopted by the researcher. Accordingly, the researcher recommended that: firstly, instructors should categorize their students' writing errors to have a clear insight into the nature of their students' errors hence specifying much time in explaining the areas of students' weaknesses. Secondly, instructors should provide students with a well-written model to read; and then ask them to criticize those reading models. The students will learn through criticizing and imitating the style of reading models. Moreover, the instructors of Shaqraa should specify much time explaining morphology since it was the branch that the students make many errors in it.

Abstract:
Shaqra University in Saudi Arabia is now seeking national institutional accreditation. The English program at Thadiq College of Sciences and Humanities, one of Shaqra University’s colleges, is participating in the project as a representative of all English programs in the university. The quality of teaching and learning is an important performance indicator that the accrediting committee (The Saudi National Committee of Academic Accreditation) considers in its evaluation process. For two years, teachers in the program have taught LLSs to students, especially in the first four levels that include skill-based courses. The present study therefore aimed to explore the frequency of teaching (reported by teachers) and using (reported by students) LLSs in the program. The relationship between LLSs on one hand and gender and achievement on the other was also explored. A 54-item questionnaire of strategies relating to vocabulary, reading, listening, writing and speaking was developed. After validated, the questionnaire was completed by 88 students and 18 teachers in the two sections of the program (for there is a section for each gender of students and teachers). Data analysis revealed high frequencies of both teaching and using LLSs. The agreement percentage between frequencies reported by teachers and students was 76%. No statistical differences were found between male and female students in LLSs. Finally, a strong positive correlation was found between LLLSs and each individual strategy category and total strategies. Implications based on the results are offered.

Abstract:
Among the effective learning tools that enhance the L2 learning process, learning strategies are considered the most vital and essential techniques could be used by the learners for improving their L2 achievement. The current study explored the preferred language learning strategies for group of Saudi EFL learners in Shaqra University, Saudi Arabia. The sample of the study included 60 male undergraduate students enrolled in English department in 2019 academic session. The sample responded to the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire by Oxford. Results were analyzed using SPSS program. Findings showed that the sample used almost all strategies in an average level. The findings showed that social strategy was used most frequently by this group of students followed by metacogntive strategy. Both strategy categories used with high range according to Oxford scale. While the rest of the strategies fell in the average range, compensation, cognitive, affective, except for the memory strategy which was used with low range. Based on the findings of the study, it is implied that training programs are suggested in this case to explain to the students the importance of using all LLSs as much as possible without focusing on one particular strategies and neglecting the others.

Abstract:
This study is based on communicative language teaching perceptions that learners have toward CLT communicatively based lectures at the preparatory program of Shaqra university. The Problem of concern is to assure that CLT approach is truly practiced. Presuppositions assumed are concerned with students’ belief about efficiency of CLT approach to help acquiring an outstanding communicative competence when learning a new language and the lecturers’ assumption that CLT is an ideal approach for teaching a new language. The study uses a questionnaire constructed to extract perceptions toward practices of CLT approach from students and lecturers. The Findings of the study show that students learn a new language effectively when it is used as a vehicle for doing something such as greeting, requesting, giving, and apologizing. Overall, students think that communication is an important skill and teachers have faith in CLT as a perfect approach enhancing students’ communication skill. It is recommended in the study that teachers had better employ CLT approach to enhance communication and that students had better make communication main objective for learning a new language. The study suggests for further studies areas of controversial issues concerning priority of grammatical accuracy to communicative accuracy when learning a new language.

Abstract:
As the case world-wide, the English language is central in Saudi schools and universities. Despite its prominence, students’ level of English language proficiency is generally believed to be unsatisfactory. This study explores this issue by investigating the quality of teaching with reference to the extent to which professors do employ the course assessment methods of learning domains specified in the course specifications template, provided by the National Commission for Academic Accreditation and Assessment in Saudi Arabia, as one of the main factors for improving teaching processes. To this end, 12 courses in the English BA program at Shaqra university, a newly established university in Saudi Arabia, were investigated. The results have shown a significant problem in the quality of teaching English language. First, the learning domains, i.e. Knowledge, Cognitive Skills, Interpersonal Skills, were barely seen in the exam papers. Second, the methods of assessments specified in the course specifications were moderately used by instructors. The study closes with some suggestions for future investigations.

Abstract:
The main aim of the present study is to develop first year university students' meta-cognitive reading comprehension using inquiry-based learning strategy. Subjects of the study were 106 (53 males, 53 females) first year university students enrolled in two classrooms at colleges representing urban and sub-urban areas in Shaqra University. The present study adopted a quasi-experimental design with one-group. The results of present study showed that first year university students should have the following reading comprehension skills: guessing, description, analyzing and identifying the main idea. Accordingly, the suggested strategy was designed and used to develop these identified meta-cognitive reading comprehension skills. A reading comprehension test, based on the identified skills, was designed and used as a pretest and posttest. Findings of the present study showed that there were statistical differences between the students’ mean score on the pretest and posttest in favor of the posttest, and there were statistical differences between the students’ mean score on the posttest at the level of .05. This can be attributed to the effectiveness of using the inquiry-based learning strategy in developing students' meta-cognitive reading comprehension skills at the university stage.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is twofold: (1) it looks at how much foreign language anxiety and self-motivation there are among EFL students, and (2) to determine if learning preferences interact with self-motivation to lessen FLA, i.e., moderate this relationship. To do this, 232 EFL students from the 2020–2021 academic year were randomly chosen to participate in a survey method at three universities in central Saudi Arabia: Qassim University, Majmaah University, and Shaqra University. SPSS was used for descriptive analysis, where Macro Process Hayes Plug-In was used for the moderated regression analysis. The findings showed a moderate level of internal and extrinsic goal orientation, control over learning beliefs, self-efficacy, task value, social engagement, instructor support, as well as anxiety related to learning a foreign language. Additionally, it was determined that participant demographic factors had no statistically significant impact on any of the distinct dimensions of self-motivation or anxiety related to learning a foreign language. More significantly, blended learning was found to have a greater negative impact on foreign language classroom anxiety than face-to-face learning and e-learning, indicating that it has a greater impact on increasing self-motivation to lessen classroom anxiety.

Abstract:
The current study investigated the effect of a blended strategy based on concept mapping and text structure on EFL learners’ writing performance. An intact group (N = 42) of seventh level English majors at Thadiq Sciences and Humanities College, Shaqra University, KSA participated in the study in the first semester of the academic year 2016-2017. They were assigned to an experimental group and a control group, each consisting of 21 students. A writing pretest was administered to the two groups and scored by two raters using the Weir’s TEEP attribute writing scale (1990). An independent samples t-test performed on the pretest mean scores of the two groups showed that they were homogenous prior to the experiment. Concept mapping and text formatting (the proposed blended strategy) were integrated in the Advanced Writing course (Eng 413) for experimental group students. The control group received conventional instruction that did not include the proposed strategy. Independent and paired samples t-tests revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group in all the sub-scales of Weir’s TEEP attribute writing scale, hence supporting the positive effect of concept mapping and text formatting on EFL learners’ writing performance. Pedagogical implications are offered.

Abstract:
The current study investigated the effect of communication strategy instruction on Saudi EFL learners’ strategy use, speaking proficiency and speaking self-efficacy. Two intact classes of EFL freshmen at Thadiq Sciences and Humanities College, Shaqra University, KSA participated in the study in the first semester of the academic year 2018-2019. They were assigned to an experimental group (N = 20) and a control group (N = 19). A speaking test and a speaking self-efficacy questionnaire were administered to the two groups. Students’ oral production and communication strategy use were assessed by independent raters. Independent samples t-tests performed on the pretest mean scores of the two groups showed that they were homogenous in strategy use, speaking proficiency and speaking self-efficacy prior to the treatment. Treatment group students were then taught four communication strategies: circumlocution, approximation, appeal for help, and fillers in the Listening and Speaking 2 (Eng 122) course. The control group received the teaching sequence adopted in the course’s textbook which includes no training on communication strategy. Independent and paired samples t-tests revealed that the treatment group outperformed the control group in all dependent variables, hence supporting the positive effect of communication strategy training on strategy use, speaking proficiency and speaking self-efficacy. Abstract:
Aim: In this study, we assessed the adequacy of dietary fiber intake among female undergraduate students in Saudi Arabia. Settings and Design: This cross-sectional study was based on a self-reported questionnaire answered by 161 female volunteer undergraduates at Shaqra University (Female Community Colleges, Al-Quwayiyah city). Their fiber intake and physical activity levels were assessed against their body mass index (BMI) and academic levels. Methods and Material: Fiber intake was measured using a short food frequency questionnaire. Physical activity was measured using the short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. According to the standard scoring, level of physical activity was classified into three categories: low, moderate, and high. Statistical Analysis Used: Descriptive statistics were used to characterize variables made focused in this study. Some data were categorical in nature, and frequency counts (f) and percentage (%) highlighted the eventual results including the utilization of the crosstabulation technique which utilized also mean and standard deviation for scale measurements. Accordingly, Kruskal-Wallis H Test was utilized in the treatment of categorical variables while variance analysis was utilized for those with scale measures. Results: It is well documented that fiber is beneficial for health and can prevent various diseases. Therefore, the results show that most participants attended the Humanities College (72.0%), followed by the Community College and Applied Medical Sciences College, with 19.3% and 8.7%, respectively. A proportion of 41.6% of the students were in their second year of college. We showed that most participants engaged in high activity levels. The BMI of 46.0% of the individuals was within normal levels. A proportion of 75.8% of females had a fiber intake of less than 18 g/day, which is considered a low level. Low fiber consumption had positive associations with college affiliation, academic levels, and BMI. Conclusion: Although fiber consumption was poor among the participants, most of them were highly active. This study indicates a need to raise awareness among university students of the adequate levels of fiber intake and the associated health benefits.
