The basic idea is to make the construction of sharp features separate from the definition of global surface and build compound curve networks consisting of base curve network and feature curve network. As sharp feature manipulation plays an important role in point clouds processing, a novel mean curvature flow-based framework for sharp feature extraction from point clouds is presented in this paper. That is, for input point clouds, a general purpose mean curvature flow-based point clouds smoothing operator is applied on them, thereby, obtaining a smoothing version of the original point clouds. The sharp feature points are labeled as points whose displacements between original point clouds and their smoothing version get local extreme. Recognizing Sharp Features of 2-D Shapes We present an efficient algorithm for recognizing and extracting sharp-features from complex polygonal shapes. The algorithm executes in O(n2) time, where n is the number of vertices in the polygon. Sharp-feature extraction algorithms can be useful as a pre-processing step for measuring shape-similarity between polygonal shapes.

The point cloud is an unorganized set of points with 3D coordinates (x, y, z) which represents a real object. These point clouds are acquired by the technology called 3D scanning. This scanning technique can be done by various methods, such as LIDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) or by utilizing recently developed 3D scanners. Point clouds can be therefore used in various applications, such as mechanical or reverse engineering, rapid prototyping, biology, nuclear physics or virtual reality. Therefore in this doctoral Ph.D. thesis, I focus on feature detection and visualization in a point cloud.

Computer graphics applications call for various mesh generation techniques to visualize objects, store shape data, perform numerical analyses, etc. Mesh generation is also a fundamental research topic in many other engineering areas related to physical models described by partial differential equations. The reason that meshed surfaces are preferred over spline surfaces in many engineering applications is its flexibility in handling complex objects, while sharp features and boundaries can be represented without trimming, which is highly desired in numerical simulations. However, unlike the United States—where vacuum cleaner salesmen were widely accepted as part of the retail culture—Britain saw much greater public opposition to unwanted high-pressure selling.
