Abstract:
Adaptive shading is an effective mechanism for reducing the number of shaded pixels to a subset of the image resolution with minimal impact on final rendering quality. We present a new scheduling method based on on-chip tiles that, along with relatively minor modifications to the GPU architecture, provides efficient hardware support. As compared to software implementations on current hardware using compute shaders, our approach dramatically reduces memory bandwidth requirements, thereby significantly improving performance and energy use. We also introduce the concept of a fragment pre-shader for programmatically controlling when a fragment shader is invoked, and describe advanced techniques for utilizing our approach to further reduce the number of shaded pixels via temporal filtering, or to adjust rendering quality to maintain stable framerates.

Abstract:
Partial shading has a negative impact on the performance parameters of a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) array, because it shades certain panels while leaving others un-shaded. This article focuses on modeling, comparing and performance assessment of 6×6, 6×5 and 5×6 size shadowed solar PV arrays under different partial shading cases in the MATLAB/ Simulink software. For this purpose, the simulation of series-parallel (SP), Total-Cross-Tied (TCT) and proposed shade dispersion based TCT (SD-TCT) type of array configurations was carried out under few shading cases. The proposed SD-TCT was designed using the shades dispersion technique, which is based on a number logic approach. In this technique, in order to effectively remove the row-current mismatches in the TCT PV array configuration, the shaded and un-shaded modules in an array were re-arranged, so that the shading on modules expands across the whole array. The physical placement of the TCT array modules has been reordered in accordance with the proposed number logic pattern exclusive of altering the electrical links among the panels. The simulation results showed that the performance of the SD-TCT type was superior to that of conventional array configurations.

Abstract:
<p>A model to improve the estimation of the power and energy from photovoltaic installations under dynamic shading conditions is proposed in this paper. The model considers the shaded profile in each photovoltaic module and the temperature profile to update the model parameters of each photovoltaic module. The impact of dynamic shades on the power production is analyzed, illustrating the large errors introduced by classical prediction approaches, which consider non-shading at all or average shading. Moreover, a procedure to model the shades profile in any environment is described and illustrated. Finally, experimental irradiance and environment temperature profiles are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed model in contrast with the classical approaches. The results illustrate that the classical approaches overestimate the power produced by the photovoltaic array, in contrast with the power produced by the proposed model.</p>

Abstract:
Balconies are horizontal overhanging structures whose main function is a connection between interior and exterior space. Moreover, they increase an area of a room and they also can have a presentable, architectural and aesthetic purpose. There are a lot of requirements on the balconies, for example the requirements on static properties, thermal bridges, railings or fire safety. From the point of view of building physics, we can consider the balcony as the fixed shading construction which can reduce overheating in a shaded room during the summer but on the other hand the balcony can influence visual comfort in the room in a negative way. This article presents a comparison and an evaluation of the daylight factor in the rooms which are shaded by balconies. The influence of the balconies on the daylight factor is assessed in dependence on a length of the balcony (a balcony overhang) and dimensions of the room which the balcony shades.

Full text
Abstract:
Artificial swards of P. maximum cv. Gatton were shaded to 25% (L25) or 54% (L54) of the sunlight received in a glasshouse for various periods related to the floral initiation, exsertion, anthesis and ripening stages of the first-formed inflorescences. Shading did not significantly reduce shoot yield. Seed yield was 93 g m-2 in the control treatment, relative to 32-48 g m-2 in the L54 series; in the L25 series, yields varied from 4 g m-2 in the continuously shaded treatment to 29 g m-2 in a late-shaded treatment. Reduction in seed yield was caused by a substantial decrease in the ratio of spikelets setting seed, and to a lesser extent by a decreased number of spikelets differentiated per inflorescence primary branch. A brief period of shading or early shading reduced seed setting in inflorescences emerging subsequent to the removal of shades. Shade slightly reduced 100-seed weight, and slightly increased branch number per inflorescence, and early shade delayed the time at which inflorescences reached anthesis. These findings require field confirmation. It is postulated that districts with high radiation receipt may have higher potential seed production and that crop management should be directed to promoting developmental phases in non-cloudy periods.

Kata kunci: tanaman puring, naungan, klorofil total THE CONCENTRATION OF LEAF CHLOROPHYLL IN CROTON PLANT (Codiaeum variegatum L.) UNDER SHADING TREATMENTABSTRACTThe study aimed to determine the differences in total chlorophyll concentration in croton leaves which were not shaded and shaded for 14 days. The leaves taken are the second youngest shoots in each plant in the pot. Sampling was done three times on days 0, 7 and 14. Croton leaves exstracted using alcohol 96% and chlorophyll concentration was measured using a spectrophotometer. The obtained data of leaf total chlorophyll concentration analysed using ANOVA at 95% confidence level and tested further with a 5% Duncan test. The results showed that the factor of treatment period resulted in a significant difference in the leaf total chlorophyll concentration in croton plants. The leaf total chlorophyll concentration at day 0 was lower than at day 7 and 14. Shaded and not shaded treatment did not affect total chlorophyll concentration but give color shades to croton leaves. Keywords: Croton plant, shade, total chlorophyll

Full text
Abstract:
Recognizing the growing interest in the application of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) with greenhouse crop production systems, in this study we used flexible, roll-to-roll printed, semi-transparent OPV arrays as a roof shade for a greenhouse hydroponic tomato production system during a spring and summer production season in the arid southwestern U.S. The wavelength-selective OPV arrays were installed in a contiguous area on a section of the greenhouse roof, decreasing the transmittance of all solar radiation wavelengths and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) wavelengths (400–700 nm) to the OPV-shaded area by approximately 40% and 37%, respectively. Microclimate conditions and tomato crop growth and yield parameters were measured in both the OPV-shaded (‘OPV’) and non-OPV-shaded (‘Control’) sections of the greenhouse. The OPV shade stabilized the canopy temperature during midday periods with the highest solar radiation intensities, performing the function of a conventional shading method. Although delayed fruit development and ripening in the OPV section resulted in lower total yields compared to the Control section (24.6 kg m−2 and 27.7 kg m−2, respectively), after the fourth (of 10 total) harvests, the average weekly yield, fruit number, and fruit mass were not significantly different between the treatment (OPV-shaded) and control group. Light use efficiency (LUE), defined as the ratio of total fruit yield to accumulated PAR received by the plant canopy, was nearly twice as high as the Control section, with 21.4 g of fruit per mole of PAR for plants in the OPV-covered section compared to 10.1 g in the Control section. Overall, this study demonstrated that the use of semi-transparent OPVs as a seasonal shade element for greenhouse production in a high-light region is feasible. However, a higher transmission of PAR and greater OPV device efficiency and durability could make OPV shades more economically viable, providing a desirable solution for co-located greenhouse crop production and renewable energy generation in hot and high-light intensity regions.

Abstract:
Objectives. To assess visually color-matching and blending-effect (BE) of a universal shade bulk-fill-resin-composite placed in resin-composite-models with different shades and cavity sizes and in natural teeth (extracted and patients’ teeth).Materials and Methods. Resin-composite-discs (10 mm × 1 mm) were prepared of universal shade composite and resin-composite of shades: A1, A2, A3, A3.5, and A4. Spectrophotometric-color-measurement was performed to calculate color-difference (ΔE) between the universal shade and shaded-resin-composites discs and determine their translucency-parameter (TP). Visual assessment was performed by seven normal-color-vision-observers to determine the color-matching between the universal shade and each shade, under Illuminant D65. Color-matching visual scoring (VS) values were expressed numerically (1–5): 1: mismatch/totally unacceptable, 2: Poor-Match/hardly acceptable, 3: Good-Match/acceptable, 4: Close-Match/small-difference, and 5: Exact-Match/no-color-difference. Occlusal cavities of different sizes were prepared in teeth-like resin-composite-models with shades A1, A2, A3, A3.5, and A4. The cavities were filled by the universal shade composite. The same scale was used to score color-matching between the fillings and composite-models. BE was calculated as difference in mean-visual-scores in models and that of discs. Extracted teeth with two different class I-cavity sizes as well as ten patients’ lower posterior molars with occlusal caries were prepared, filled by universal shade composite, and assessed similarly.Results. In models, the universal shade composite showed close matching in the different cavity sizes and surrounding shades (4≤VS<5) (BE = 0.6–2.9 in small cavities and 0.5–2.8 in large cavities). In extracted teeth, there was good-to-close color-matching (VS = 3.7–4.4 in small cavities, BE = 2.5–3.2) (VS = 3–3.5, BE = 1.8–2.3 in large cavities). In patients’ molars, the universal shade composite showed good-matching (VS = 3–3.3, BE = −0.9–2.1).Conclusions. Color-matching of universal shade resin-composite was satisfactory rather than perfect in patients’ teeth.

Abstract:
Starch and gelatin are natural biopolymers that offer a variety of benefits and are available at relatively low costs. In addition to this, they are an appealing substitute for synthetic polymers for the manufacturing of packaging films. Such packaging films are not only biodegradable but are also edible. Moreover, they are environmentally friendly and remain extremely cost-effective. In lieu of this, films made from fish gelatin and cornstarch have been the subject of several experiments. The pristine gelatin films have poor performance against water diffusion but exhibit excellent flexibility. The goal of this study was to assess the performance of pristine gelatin films along with the addition of food plasticizers. For this purpose, solutions of gelatin/cornstarch were prepared and specified quantities of food colors/plasticizers were added to develop different shades. The films were produced by using a blade coating method and were characterized by means of their shaded colors, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), compositional changes via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), hardness, bendability, transparency, wettability, surface roughness, and thermal stability. It was observed that the addition of several food colors enhanced the moisture blocking effect, as a 10% reduction in WVTR was observed in the shaded films as compared to pristine films. The yellow-shaded films exhibited the lowest WVTR, i.e., around 73 g/m2·day when tested at 23 °C/65%RH. It was also observed that the films’ WVTR, moisture content, and thickness were altered when different colors were added into them, although the chemical structure remained unchanged. The mechanical properties of the shaded films were improved by a factor of two after the addition of colored plasticizers. Optical examination and AFM demonstrated that the generated films had no fractures and were homogeneous, clear, and shiny. Finally, a biscuit was packaged in the developed films and was monitored via shore hardness. It was observed that the edible packed sample’s hardness remained constant even after 5 days. This clearly suggested that the developed films have the potential to be used for packaging in various industries.

Abstract:
Neutron capture reactions are the main contributors to the synthesis of the heavy elements through the s-process. Together with 13C(α, n)16O, which has recently been measured by the LUNA collaboration in an energy region inside the Gamow peak, 22Ne(α, n)25Mg is the other main neutron source in stars. Its cross section is mostly unknown in the relevant stellar energy (450 keV < Ecm < 750 keV), where only upper limits from direct experiments and highly uncertain estimates from indirect sources exist. The ERC project SHADES (UniNa/INFN) aims to provide for the first time direct cross section data in this region and to reduce the uncertainties of higher energy resonance parameters. High sensitivity measurements will be performed with the new LUNA-MV accelerator at the INFN-LNGS laboratory in Italy: the energy sensitivity of the SHADES hybrid neutron detector, together with the low background environment of the LNGS and the high beam current of the new accelerator promises to improve the sensitivity by over 2 orders of magnitude over the state of the art, allowing to finally probe the unexplored low-energy cross section. Here we present an overview of the project and first results on the setup characterization.

Abstract:
Spruce (Piceaabies L.) and pine (Pinussylvestris L.) seedlings were planted at different positions relative to artificial tree shades. Two sites in northern Sweden known as difficult to regenerate owing to frosts during the growing season were used. No deficiency of soil water was recorded during the growing season and all seedlings experienced similar temperature conditions during night frosts. Exposed seedlings received on clear days 7 h more of direct solar radiation than did shaded seedlings. After the first severe night frost in August, discoloration of needles and a decrease in chlorophyll concentration as well as lowered photosynthetic rates were more pronounced for the exposed seedlings. This was more obvious for spruce than pine seedlings. The differences in radiant load seem to be of ultimate importance for the results observed. It is proposed that photoinhibition and subsequent photooxidation of planted seedlings occur in the field when severe night frosts are followed by clear days with high irradiance.

Abstract:
<p>In general, turfgrass grows well and forms high quality turf under full sun exposure. It is very difficult, however, to grow a warm season turfgrass under shaded condition. Zoysia grass is a popular warm season grass that commonly grow under full sun exposure condition. There are limited information regarding the growth response and turf quality of zoysia grass when grown under shaded condition. This study aims to observe the growth and quality of various zoysia grass local cultivars at different shading intensities and different mowing. This research was carried out using 10 zoysia grass cultivars planted in the rice fields’ vertisol clay with randomized complete block design. The shading used were control, shade-nets with 25% and 65% hole densities. Zoysia grass was fertilized using NPK; 4:1:3 and mowed three times. The results showed that plants without shade, 25% and 65% received on average solar irradiance of 25,141; 12,456 and 3,727 lux. The increase in shade level decreased the shoot fresh weight, dry weight, root dry weight and the plant height. Shading and frequent mowing effected the plant height. Mowing has more effect on plant height in 25% shading than in 65% shading. The increase in shading, in mowed grass showed increased plant height and decreased plant dry weight. Mowing three times can reduce plant height in all shades. The grasses under 25% shading resulted the highest plant dry weight; whereas and shading 65% resulted the lowest. Plant dry weight and uniformity of turf were affected by the cultivars.</p>

Abstract:
A noteworthy novelist and author of many children books, Shashi Deshpande, has acquired a unique place in Indian writing in English. Her novels are written in simple and lucid language. All of them deal with simple people belonging to small strata of society in general as well as predicament of women in particular in the society and family. Her women characters seem to be alive and breathing in the surrounding nearby each of us as we see in our daily life. They are ordinary women who struggle for their own identity, self-realization and emancipation. Since Indian society is adhered to patriarchal set up, as a result the traditional women in Shashi Deshpande’s novels face the problem of suppression, oppression, injustice, exploitation and marginalization. Even if they are educated, they are the victims of several kinds of evils. Shashi Deshpande is much sieved to think the condition of women and fought for the cause of women. In the time of Shashi Deshpande men thought women as child-bearing machine. She tries her best to make aware her women their rights and fills them with courage in order they may demand their rights and make a niche in the society.

Abstract:
According to a 2011 news release by the company, "Shiseido is focusing on expanding sales in emerging markets with the aim of becoming 'a global player representing Asia with its origins in Japan'."[1] The cosmopolitan image of the company overlaying its Japanese identity lends itself to intriguing prewar parallels and debates over cultures representing both East and West. As noted by Frank Dikötter in his study of early Republican Era (1912-1949) Chinese material culture: "The endless circulation, domestication and recycling of objects with the advent of the global economy has frequently offended the guardians of cultural barriers: the notion of 'hybridity' has been used to perpetuate the illusion of 'authenticity'."[2] This hybrid "Empire of Beauty" rather than purely Japanese idea of beauty unveiled in Russia, along with Shiseidô's new Asian focus, are in fact much older business concepts dating back to the early 20th century. Not surprisingly, like other Japanese companies in the 1930s, Shiseidô also began its advent into emerging markets in the prewar period, where the progress of cosmetic penetration into northeast Asia paralleled imperial Japan's military intrusions. In addition, Shiseidô’s unique modernist visual culture sold images of an empire of beauty, where women consumers on the continent helped support an emerging politics of national identity in their product choices. The company's intersection of modernist advertising and national propaganda reveals the multifaceted interests of organizations like Shiseidô involved in marketing the Japanese empire and its appealing modernity. Abstract:
Abstract Beckett’s late prose texts Company, Ill Seen Ill Said, and Worstward Ho perform a radical process of literary reimagination late in a long writing career: they reconfigure how biography relates to narrative, and they rethink the dimensionality and mobility of character. In their negotiations with literary history and etymology these texts replenish the stocks of language across the deep time of its evolution and its accrual of semantic and associative richness. In their rich geological and archaeological dispositions, the three texts of Nohow On demonstrate how deep time intersects with the narrative present in images of the earth, providing a locus for life and afterlife: both in the sense of the posthumous condition and in offering belated aesthetic possibilities.

Abstract:
Shashi Tharoor is a distinctivevoice in the Postcolonial Indian literature in English with his remarkable contribution of more than 16 works of fiction and non-fiction. Postcolonialism refers to a set of theoretical concepts, approaches and interventions which deals with the diverse effects of the interaction between the colonizer and the colonized. History, politics and culture have always been a dominant preoccupation of the Indian English novelists. The compulsive obsession was perhaps inevitable since the genre originated and developed concurrently with the climatic phase of colonial rule. As a diplomat and writer, Shashi Tharoor has explored the diversity of culture in his native country. He has made his point in many of his interviews that the novel is full of collisions of various sorts- personal, political, cultural, emotional and violent. Riot is a novel about the ownership of history, about love, hate, cultural collision, religious fanaticism and the impossibility of knowing the truth. The novel chronicles the mystery of an American 24-year old lady, Priscilla Hart. The intention of this paper is to explore the cultural conflict between the East and the West and an attempt is made to examine Shashi Tharoor’s Riot as a conveyor of the various distinguishable features to the divergent cultures. The characters of Riot are facing problems and striving to achieve their identities as Indians and as individuals in Indian society. Lakshman, though an educated Indian, cannot share his intellectual ideas with any fellow Indians, but feels quite comfortable with Priscilla, an American lady. Yet, he cannot completely forego his Indian identity and is aware of their irreconcilable gap between their culture, values and outlook towards life.

Abstract:
No other woman novelist than Shashi Deshpande has been given accolades so greatly and accorded prominence and worldwide recognition for the projection of feminine sensibility in Indian English Literature. Her exploration of the female psyche by probing deep into the inner working of her mind is highly appreciated by the readers and greatly discussed among the researchers and critics. The novels of Shashi Deshpande are centred on women’s psyche to understand their urges and despairs in a better way. Her protagonists advocate for ‘A Room of One’s Own and proclaim their rights on their bodies. She has portrayed the characters unsatisfied with the uncongenial social conditions that confront their aspirations, needs, urges and hopes. So they conduct themselves in different ways displaying different attitudes and temperaments. These characters undergo a remarkable dynamism in their personalities, and display satisfactory development in their attitude and outlook regarding life. The authors in this research analysis have attempted to examine in depth the various feminist issues projected in her novels through the characters of the main protagonists: Indu of Roots and Shadows, Jaya of That Long Silence and Saru of The Dark Holds No Terrors.

Abstract:
The amount of carbon emission pumped into the atmosphere has led to a rise in global temperature. Rapid urbanization increased the use of air conditioners, resulting in the urban heat island effect. The use of environmentally friendly methods in reducing energy consumption for buildings is needed now more than ever. This study aims to evaluate the cooling load of a prototype by installing a shading plate above its roof at a height of 0.67m. A wooden panel with an attached aluminium sheet is used as a shading plate, 2m by 0.9m. The prototype with a dimension of 0.80m (L) x 0.50m (W) x 0.97m (H) is a scaled-down model of the guardhouse located near Block E, UCSI University. Along with the shading plate, the prototype is placed nearby the guardhouse to validate the actual guardhouse's exact condition. The shadow acts as an insulator to the prototype. There were two devices used for data collection; a VELOCICALC thermometer to measure the air velocity and air temperature and an infrared thermometer to measure the profile temperature of the room walls, roof, and floor. To ensure the prototype is adequately ventilated, it was placed 20 cm above the floor using red bricks from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m, a maximum temperature reduction of 4.5°C when the shading plate thoroughly shades the room. A total of 14.5% electricity cost can be reduced monthly when the guardhouse is fully shaded from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. In contrast, both the actual guardhouse and the prototype model can receive full sunlight from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., while from early morning till 11 a.m., the guardhouse is fully shaded by the UCSI Block E building.

Abstract:
The short-circuit current (Isc), the open-circuit voltage (Voc), and the maximum power point (VMPP,IMPP) of monocrystalline and multicrystalline silicon solar cells under three kinds of partial shading patterns have been investigated experimentally. The partial shades are, respectively, the nine shelter locations by 1 cm × 1 cm black card, the six shelter locations by 2 cm × 1 cm black card, and the center shelters with isosceles triangle, circle, square, and two rectangles black cards whose areas are 2 cm2. Firstly, the results show that the partial shading causes disproportional high losses on those parameters of both cells but will have a minimal effect onVoc. Secondly, it is found that those parameters of the monocrystalline cell are less dependent on the shading than that of the multicrystalline cell. Thirdly, it is noted thatIscandIMPPof both cells will be decreasing dramatically as a rectangular black shading card with a long side parallel to cell’s finger, compared with that normal to cell’s finger. Finally, it can be seen that the effects of shading on the electrical parameters of both cells will be suppressed when the border lines of shading match the size of the shaded cell.
