Zheng, Aihua. "Shaku Sōen (1860-1919) and Rinzai Zen in modern Japan, 1868-1919." Diss., University of Iowa, 2018. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6533.

Abstract:
This dissertation examines the life and monastic career of Shaku Sōen (1860-1919) in Japan, Sri Lanka, and the United States from the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries. It draws on a rich documentary record in Japanese, literary Chinese (kanbun), and English to analyze the social, doctrinal, and ritual life of the Rinzai Zen monastic community. It traces the survival and revival of Rinzai Zen to adapt to Japan’s nation and empire building through the Meiji period (1868-1912), and the negotiation with Zen’s pre-Meiji scriptures and practice and Western studies of Buddhism until the Taishō period (1912-1926). Previous studies tend to approach the modernization of Zen from a Westernization perspective or that of Japanese nationalism and colonial expansion. To bring the two perspectives in conversation with each other and add new insights, this study reconstructs Sōen’s life and career in association with his dharma lineage and three major Zen monasteries—Myōshinji, Engakuji, and Kenchōji—and their capillary network of branch temples throughout Japan. It also traces Sōen’s three-year study in Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and his major international travels to Thailand (Siam), China, Korea, the United States, among other places, that shaped his conception of Zen in the modern world. It sheds new light on the process of preparation that he and his colleagues had made to participate in the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893. This historical and transnational study of Sōen shows that he and his peers strove to modernize in the Western paradigm and identify Zen with nationalistic interests of the state, while preserving and reviving pre-Meiji scriptures and practices. They presented Zen from a Japanese cultural perspective and make Zen compatible with Japanese nationalism and militarism. Their collaboration with Ceylonese Theravādins and Westerners interested in Buddhism and Japanese culture encouraged the spread of Japanese Mahāyāna Buddhism to the West while supporting Zen revival in Japan. Sōen and his students including D. T. Suzuki (1870-1966) introduced Zen teachings to the United States, setting the terms for Zen’s reception in the West through the twentieth century. It suggests that the modernization of Zen was not simply embracing the Western influences but was also a creative process for Zen monks to harness both the domestic and international resources to position themselves in the modern world.

Abstract:
The tendai school of buddhism, born in china in the 6th cent. Ad, was officially recognized as an independent school in japan at the beginning of the 9th cent. , due to the efforts of the japanese monk saicho. Tendai played an important part in the evolution of non-indian buddhist thought of the 3 major far-eastern countries, china, korea, japan. In our days, the school still exists independently only in japan, where it boasts hundreds of temples and monasteries and thousands of monks. Our study aims at showing the state of tendai dogmatics as it is attested in japan in the work of monk gishin (781-833), well known for being the first patriarch (zasu) of japanese tendai, but still somehow shrouded in mystery. The major part of our work is devoted to the translation and comentary to the treatise compiled by gishin and presented to the imperial court around 830, the tendai hokke-shu gi shu or "compendium of the doctrines of the lotus school tendai", which we compare with its chinese sources as well as with two other texts, a korean one from the 10th century (the ch'ontae sakyo-ui) and a chinese one of the 8th cent. (the bajiao dayi) ; both were well known in japan, the former even getting to be there the most wide-spread introductory manual to the school. We thus were able to evidence the breadth of gishin's work, his orthodoxy, together with his method of outting and rehandling his sources, which illustrates a remarkable expertise for a man who was but the first in japan to systematize the maze of tendai doctrines. That brought us to ask ourselves why this work did not enjoy in its own country the success it deserved. It was a question for history to answer and we established in our historical inquiry that gishin was definitely not a second-rate character but an important personality who got involved in internal strives inside the school, where his supporters were defeated. His work fell victim to its author's fate and thus remained neglected for a long time, to the point that our thesis is the first overall study bearing on it

Shalu''s garment manufacturers once represented the local industry and supplied the markets with their goods. However, today those markets are not visited by many of the townsmen nor benefit from the great influx of tourism. Therefore, many of the goods are no longer purchased and shop owners have financially suffered. In the same location a tunnel, which is an essential connecting piece from this previous lucrative industry to the local townsmen is in despair. After undergoing a research acquisition of information and field investigation, offset and to close the inactive old building and workshop causes this industrial subject to reform. With these great issues at hand, any new project to create industry by retrofitting old buildings decline gradually.Projects like the sand deer industry are slow to emerge. Nevertheless, with cultural creativity and reforming the development of increased industrial tourism, this positively impels the present government, the central committee and other departments to strategically place funds and the manpower that is devoted to promoting a return of Shalu''s manufacturing industry. This defense is designed for the purpose of such project. My experiment is to offer ideas to which using the old construction that is gradually declining and placing these locations back into an operating industry by discussing what it requires to take the traditional manufacture industry and reform it to an industry of tourism. These activities and topics demand cultural creativity for the development of industrial improvement. This also requires a study Shalu present situation, the peripheral resources and the possibility in utilizing it''s resources in their present condition. An example is the present day cultural creativity of Taichung. The countries key plan is to pay great attention to the creation of its cultural image and to support the innovation of industry. When the traditional industry unifies tourism with cultural creativity it is a social tendency to influence reform. This research encompasses the design of concept of pigment by operating an experiment of architectural design. My experiment displays the old construction by adding a different element of agitation. The design plan has suited the traditional industry while including creativity as tourism unifies with time into the demand of the active new industry.

The business plan is to build a own-brand hot pot, based on a five-year-finance forecast. The total capital needed is NT $ 1.5 million, the gross profit ratio of which is amount 60 % and the net profit of which is stably increasing in each year. The ratio of net profit in those five years is 6 %, 9 %, 13 %, 16 %, and 19 % respective. The five-year short-term achievement is to make the investors get payback which they invested. Thus, the performance of the business plan shows as a great profitability as we can expect. This new venture has five shareholders, whose capital is raised by the family members, and the total capital is NT $ 1.5 million. Mr. Liu, one of the shareholders, works as a CEO who executes the whole project. The micro-entrepreneurship came up with the idea that one of the relatives had confronted with the crisis of middle-aged work transformation. Meanwhile, the family had discussed the issue of start-up. With a determined spirit of “succeed without fear,” the family decided to generate their own hot pot conforming to the public’s flavor. The company runs bricks and motor business and sells the personal shabu-shabu hot pot at a low-priced for the business plan. The business plane analyzes the startup by the theory of “Business Model Generation BMG.” It is claimed that the value proposition is to make a good use of “warm” to create ambience interacting between customers and the server. Besides, checking the personal social net consists of the key partners, supply chains. The startup can place an order to the wholesalers in order to lower the food cost. Furthermore, product development is the key factor. The company, Shabu No.1, developed the hot pot soup base, controlled it by itself, and eliminated customer concerns by the food traceability process. As for the key activities, taking advantage of social media, such as Facebook, or Line App, made “Shabu No.1” deliver the related promotions to customers immediately. Moreover, the business plan was applied to the two theories, “ Porter’s Five Forces Model ” and “ SWOT Analysis,” to evacuate its internal and external feasibility assessment. According to the perspective of “Marketing 4Ps Analysis,” it can help to formulate the promotion strategies for the future operation. The short-term goal of the startup is to make a capital amount of 1.5 million in five years. Furthermore, it is also expected to adopt the success model of “Shabu No.1” to other branches by utilizing its outstanding learning curve of the original one in order to increase the high revenue as expected. It is indicated that the business plan is highly feasible and recommends to invest. Buffet, it became a common business mode in Taiwan whether it’s high-price or cheap. But how about the satisfaction of whole service for buffet still absence. Therefore, one of our purposes in this study is examining different backgrounds consumer for their different satisfaction. And the other one is to explore the different backgrounds customer for their prefer food needs. We hope the result can provide for relevant industry to adjust ingredients. In this study, we use 5 dimensions of DINESERV which measure service quality for hospitality to develop questionnaires. We focus on 4 brands of Shabu-Shabu restaurant chain as our research target and these restaurants’ average price is between 399 to 499 NT. We total surveyed 400 questionnaires and recovery 357 valid. We use descriptive statistical analysis, independent sample T test and ANOVA to examine our data and hypotheses. The study results showed that different backgrounds customer has partial different satisfaction on restaurant’s service such as tangible, assurance, responsiveness and reliability, but has different satisfaction with empathy. This can be referring for restaurant hardware or software planning when they need to reposition. The result of food needs analysis can statistic the consumers’ need valued when they eat buffet. In early days, limited by its natural environment, Beishiken area was a marginal outskirt area. The national regional development policy was not particularly beneficial for the local area. The later shaping forces of the area come not only from national policy, but also from the complicated multiple powers in the area. With new regional geography perspectives, this study sees Beishiken area in Shalu Township as media of social interaction. With Giddens’ structuration theory, it explores the interaction between the local dynamic factors and the structural forces by reviewing the area development process of Beishiken. The study shows that, the key point of Beishiken’s development comes from the dynamic interplay of various forces. The Taichung Harbor Special District Plan was implanted in Beishiken Area in 1972. The plan became the most effective structural element. However, the then plan of the Taiwan Provincial Government, under the restriction of the zoning of low density residence, failed to boost the local economic development. Structural rules limited the development of the area. In the meantime, the diversified powers, activated by the then mayor Mr. Chen Meng-shen, became predominant forces in the development of Beishiken Area and pushed the central government to change its original zoning policy. In 1999, after Taiwan Provincial Government authorized Taichung County Government its predominant power, the local government converged with the diversified powers in the area. This boosted the local boom of Beishiken. Beishiken in the interacting process of the loosening structural policy and various agents finally shapes the local pattern of development.

Aziz, Shanu. "Wideband spectrum sensing using sub-Nyquist sampling / Shanu Aziz." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/10820.

Full text
Abstract:
Spectrum sensing is the process of identifying the frequencies of a spectrum in which Signals Of Interest (SOI) are present. In case of continuous time signals present in a wideband spectrum, the information rate is seen to be much less than that suggested by its bandwidth and are therefore known as sparse signals. A review of the literature in [1] and [2] indicates that two of the many techniques used in wideband spectrum sensing of sparse signals are the Wideband Compressive Radio Receiver (WCRR) for multitoned signals and the mixed analog digital system for multiband signals. In both of these techniques even though the signals are sampled at sub-Nyquist rates using Compressive Sampling (CS), the recovery algorithms used by them are different from that of CS. In WCRR, a simple correlation function is used for the detection of carrier frequencies and in a mixed analog digital system, a simple digital algorithm is used for the identification of frequency support. Through a literature survey, we could identify that a VHSIC hardware descriptive ModelSim simulation model for wideband spectrum sensing of multitoned and multiband signals using sub Nyquist sampling does not exist. If a ModelSim simulation model can be developed using VHDL codes, it can be easily adapted for FPGA implementation leading to the development of a realistic hardware prototype for use in Cognitive Radio (CR) communication systems. The research work reported through this dissertation deals with the implementation of simulation models of WCRR and mixed analog digital system in ModelSim by making use of VHDL coding. Algorithms corresponding to different blocks contained in the conceptual design of these models have been formulated prior to the coding phase. After the coding phase, analyses of the models are performed using test parameter choices to ensure that they meet the design requirements. Different parametric choices are then assigned for the parametric study and a sufficient number of iterations of these simulations were carried out to verify and validate these models.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an in-depth study of the nineteenth-century Shalu Abbatial History, a collection of biographies of abbots and other important religious masters, or lamas, from the Tibetan monastery of Shalu, located in the Tibetan region of Tsang. Examining the History in conjunction with the autobiography of its author, Losel Tengyong (b. 1804), and vis-à-vis other texts from Shalu, reveals, I argue, that the Shalu Abbatial History is a guidebook of conduct that prescribes to the Shalu monk, its intended reader, a discrete pattern of exemplarity that constitutes the author's own particular vision of what a noble lama should be within the Shalu tradition. The constitution of this pattern of exemplarity is examined within four themes of virtuous conduct: the dedication to resolving congregational conflicts, the literalist observance of the Buddhist disciplinary code contained within the Vinaya, the devotion to the preservation of books, and the power to successfully exploit violent rituals to protect the monastic tradition. The prescriptive vision, moreover, constituted by these four virtuous themes, lies not only within the History itself, but also more broadly in the intertextual connections that clarify this prescription and infuse it with meaning from the Shalu tradition—the world that has generated, and is reflected within, the text.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Shalu landfill leachate and to develop a practical process to treat leachate. We develop the advanced catalytic oxidation process, which combined FeGAC with H2O2 to treat leachate. The advantages of FeGAC/H2O2 process included that FeGAC could remove organics and metals from leachate by adsorption, and FeGAC could catalyze H2O2 decomposed to OH‧for oxidation of organics. The experiments included leachate investigation and leachate treatments. From the leachate investigation, we monitored the Shalu Landfill leachate over a long period of time. The analytic items included pH, BOD, COD, TOC, conductivity and heavy metals. From the leachate treatments, we separated humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FA) and non-humic substances (NHS) from the landfill leachate, and then treated them respectively by various treatment processes. The experimental results showed that the leachate is stable and the ratios of BOD/COD and COD/TOC are 0.059 and 1.555 respectively, it also contains Pb, Ca, Cd, Hg, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni and Zn. Furthermore, the experimental data were found to obey Freundlich and Langmuir equations. Both single and binary systems, the adsorption data always fit well with Langmuir model, and the experimental data of NHS fit better than HA and FA obviously. From Batch and Fixed-bed experiments, the process of FeGAC/H2O2 has the best treatment efficiency. In Batch experiments, the TOC removal of leachate is 70.4%. In Fixed-bed experiments, the humic substances removal of leachate is 5683.8 mg. The treatment efficiency increased with H2O2 doses and the best pH value for the treatment is pH 6. Using FeGAC/H2O2 process, the TOC removal of HA, FA and NHS are 126.19 mg/L, 206.60 mg/L and 294.2 mg/L respectively.

Bookcrossing has been introduced to Taiwan since 2003. It features the connection and communication among readers, with interreationships that distinguishes the traditional way that library promotes its collections to the public. With five strategic experimental modules of experientmental marketing, this study analyses how Bookcrossing has enriched the experience of readers and creates a sphere that has its own leadership. Action study is applied in this study. It is conducted at Shenpau Library of Shalu, by observation, interviews, and group discussion, generates the following result: A book is the key factor in the practice, with a game-like mechanism, allows public to create a meaningful connection. In the bookcrossing process, it motivates the reading enthusiasm, which will eventually fades due to the decrease of mechanism. As for the searching for the joyful experience, it depends on the whether the arousing curiosity has been satisfied. The outcome for the practice of bookcrossing faces the challenge from outer environment such as society and inner behaviorism. At last, this study also provides some practical suggestions toward the practice of bookcrossing.

The operational performances of banks’ branches in Shalu District are investigated in this study under data envelopment analysis (DEA) method from 2005 to 2007.The empirical results show that the older bank’s branch, Taichung Port Brach of Taiwan Bank, has the relatively better performances in five categories which are total amount in saving, total amount in loan, total amount in exchange, earnings and fees from 2005 to 2007. Using DEA analyzing the operational performances from 2005 to 2007, I find Land Bank and Mega International Commercial Bank receiving the best efficiency value among three efficiency categories. After dividing all branches into two sub-samples which are established before 1991 and after 1991, the results show that the average efficiency values of branches established after 1991 are better than the average efficiency values of branches established before 1991 in 2005 and 2006, especially in pure technical efficiency value. But in 2007, it is different from the results of 2005 and 2006. The results show that the average efficiency values except the pure technical efficiency value of branches established before 1991 are better than the average efficiency values of branches established after 1991. Since 1929, Shalu area set up its first movie theater which started the sea-line movie culture, developed the image memory of Shalu movie culture and strived to preserve and maintain the local movie culture. People can thus understand and identify with their hometown cultures of, and local people can improvise localism for where they lived. This is what called Taiwan culture identity. Since 2002, The Ministry of Culture has promoted the idea of local cultural center. Those local culture houses which were built fast, accounted for 98% of museum in Taiwan. However, with the problems of improper management and insufficient resources, many of them are facing operational difficulties, such as unprofess, insufficient manpower, fund shortage, and stiff dispalys. Therefore, this study used the perspective of local communities and academia to explore present operational status and development strategy of Shalu Cinema Art Museum.. This study used qualitative research method focusing on Shalu Cinema Art Museum’s influences on local cultural developments. First, histories of Shalu Cinema Art Museum, nonprofit organizations and local cultural houses were evaluated. After interviewing museum staff, experts and scholars, volunteer groups and the local communities, the problems we found included insufficient professionals, lack of local awareness, insufficient utilization of civil societies’ resources, uneven distribution of government resources and limited infrastructures. Finally, the suggestions we proposed included integrated community development, specialization and characterization of management and administration, making good use of museum space, carring out talent education, strengthening strategic alliances, and the development of integrated marketing mechanism. Although these suggestions are for Shalu Cinema Art Museum, we also hope it can be helpful for other local culture houses.

The tutoring class has the function of reinforcing students' learning in today's society. The number of current tutoring classes in the country has reached 17,344, which does not include tutoring classes without government permission. From the above, the competition between the cram schools is quite fierce. Therefore, it is very important to know what parents need for the cram school. At present, few people have studied the cram school in the Shalu area of Taichung City. This study evaluates the parents in this area through the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The factors of the will of the class are evaluated by the evaluation criteria. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the key factors for parents' success in choosing a cram school, and to develop four main evaluation criteria and eleven evaluation criteria to measure the research system and find out the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The relative weight value represented by each criterion. The study found that the first level of the main criteria section is most valued by the parents. The second is "educational quality", the third is "student management"and the last is "service quality". In the second level of the criteria section, the top five factors are the bottom of the benefit assessment and education quality. Under the various assessment criteria, the priority of the selection scheme is the most favored by parents in the "Ho Kau Yan Tutorial", followed by "Clinton Culture and Education" and finally "Zheng Teacher English Tutoring Class".

Shalu Township is mostly located on the Dadu terrace. Because the land here is generally acidic, the winter northeast monsoon wind is strong, and the wet and dry are sharply delineated, farmers in this area have mostly grown upland crops—rather than rice—since the Qing Dynasty. Among these crops, peanuts and sesame are suitable for oil-making, and a traditional oil-pressing industry (oil pressing mills) therefore gradually emerged in Shalu Township starting in the 1920s. Following the end of World War II, the area of land planted in oilseeds was expanded from the 1960s to the 1980s, and hydraulic pressing equipment came into widespread use, boosting pressing capacity. The traditional oil-pressing industry (oil pressing mills) of Shalu Township reached its peak of prosperity during this period. However, in spite of the good fragrance and flavor of oil produced by traditional pressing mills, the industry could not overcome the price advantage of large modern oil plants using the solvent extraction method. Furthermore, people switched to using soy oil, and the oil market was deregulated. Because of these factors, starting in the 1980s, the traditional oil-pressing industry of Shalu Township were either forced out of business or had to downsize their operations. In the wake of the decline of the traditional oil-pressing industry, persons who are concerned about traditional industries and Taiwan's cultural heritage should work together to help the industry survive, update its business model, develop relevant byproducts, and even transform it into a cultural creativity industry.

Exploring the past major flooding disasters will find that many people often become factors of loss and casualties because they do not realize the disaster risks they will face. However, in the daily life and in the event of disasters, people can take timely and appropriate response actions to reduce the impact of instantaneous precipitation. This study aimed at the people living in Shalu District, Taichung City as the research object, and collected relevant literature data for the preparation of questionnaires. Including the cognitive factors of flood disasters, residents’ knowledge of the sources of flooding information, responses and adaptations. Includes three parts: (1) Disaster perception (2) Adjustment behavior (3) Basic attribute data of residents surveyed. The analysis methods adopted were respectively narrative statistical analysis, cross-analysis (Chi-square test), and variance analysis (One-Way ANOVA test). Through the analysis results, the factors influencing disaster awareness and adaptation behavior were discussed. The results show that both the attributes of respondents and the awareness of disasters or adaptation behavior show significant correlations and differences. The most significant common factors include: whether there is flooding experience, experience flooding times, and residence time. Age and so on. Older people who live longer in the local area, have more frequent flooding experience and frequency, will have a higher awareness of flood disasters, and relatively more positive adjustments. Through the impact factors learned from this study, the administrative units can be used as a reference for flood control or decision-making, so that residents themselves have the ability to prevent and respond to disasters.

The ceremony, image and cognition in religious propagation~A case study of Shalu Three Saint Temple Abstract Taiwan is a small island, but it has dense traditional temples everywhere. In parallel to it, we lack the research of women’s participation in the history of religion, just as many countries’ culture, “patriarchy” in the world; Taiwan’s religion has also deeply influenced by this institution. “Three Saint Temple” in Shalu that enshrines Kings of the Three-Mountains, started in 2006; a 35-year-old woman, Wu, Yi-Jia has descended and held the post of temple host; she has broken the taboos and grave offence that women can’t hold the post of officiant and spokesman of Zheng-ge male God (if any, other temples’ main God are Buddha Jih and Third Prince that love to game world), even more, she descended and handled affairs during unclean pregnancy which is treated as “giving birth to menstruation” by tradition as usual. She composed a team “Ling-long Palanquin” by women to carry the Palanquin, and broke taboos that women can’t hold God statues and touch male Gods (for example, Wang-ye)…etc., if members have menstruation during tour of inspection, they still go out and carry the Palanquin without question. While the former descends, she never wears Tang suit which represents ecclesiastic, and the later, they use colorful chinglish kimono and fragmentary and beautiful accessories to decorate, what kind of innovation and variation does these movements generate to the Taiwanese local temple culture? In the past, most related research has focused on field investigation and the text analysis of recording process; most of them stay at the exploration of traditional altar, edge population and dropout student, or the research of police officers and head police in the world of dead, they never deeply discussed the gender issue or innovation, therefore, this study would like to aim at the following three research findings:  (1)Exploring what role does women play in the religious propagation aspect. (2) Researching what message and value do a woman hold the post of the officiant of a male God and women carry male God’s Palanquin express and demonstrate? (3) Understanding how do the others (the public) treat this kind of religious ceremony? This study employed “participant observation method”──the researcher is a member of Ling-long Palanquin; this study has changed the onlooking record conducting from top to the bottom that similar research could achieve, this research is participating and observing by researcher self; “in-depth interview”──interview the temple host, Wu, Yi-Jia, asking her why she set up a Three Saint Temple that overturns sex taboos and its internal operation? Interview the other seven members’ participation, process and thought to the research issue and make a contrast; “Focus Group Method”──except the information transmission between research subject and group, understanding the third parties’ feedback. The conclusion is that although this study explore the results of women and image innovation, it couldn’t take one for the whole that whether Taiwanese other temples have such unique development. The researcher is a woman and a member of the research group, if related study could research by men in the future, then we could expect another interpretations and findings; if time is enough, the study could add one more research tool, questionnaire survey, it could do the cross-over analysis and make the research result more completely. The related study may add tour of inspection and the record and journal of divinetoperdict as well. Keyword: religious propagation, ceremony, imagine, cognition

Kennedy, Titus Michael. "A demographic analysis of Late Bronze Age Canaan : ancient population estimates and insights through archaeology." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/13257.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a demographic analysis of Late Bronze Age Canaan (ca. 1550/1500-1200/1150 BCE), undertaken through the use of archaeological and anthropological data. The purpose is to establish estimates for the settlement population, nomadic population, nuclear family size, house size, sex ratio, and life expectancy of the people of Canaan during the Late Bronze Age. Previous studies have not addressed these issues in detail, nor had data from the entire scope of Canaan been considered, nor had a precise methodology been developed or used for estimating specific settlement populations and nomadic populations for Canaan during the Late Bronze Age. Thus, additional aspects of the thesis include the development and use of a new methodology for estimating ancient populations and a database of all of the Late Bronze Age sites in Canaan—both archaeological and textual. To accomplish these goals, the thesis uses archaeological data from excavations and surveys, texts from the Late Bronze Age, human skeletal remains from Late Bronze Age burials, demographic and ethnographic studies of various types of nomads, and methods, techniques, and observations from previous relevant studies. The primary objectives are to 1) obtain individual settlement, nomadic, and total population estimates for Canaan in the Late Bronze Age that are as accurate as possible based on the currently available data, along with additional demographic estimates of life expectancy and sex ratio, 2) propose a new methodology for estimating settlement populations in the ancient world, 3) present a catalogue and map of all of the sites in Canaan that were inhabited during the Late Bronze Age, 4) illuminate demographic trends during the Late Bronze Age in Canaan. The implications of the results may lead to a modified demographic view of Canaan and its sub-regions during the Late Bronze Age.

Abstract In the beginning of the 80’s, female writers have started to monopolize the whole literary circles. Although the quantity of their works is sufficient, the comments received from the traditional literature views are not satisfactory, even with some criticism about the contents. For re-examining the works of the female writers, and giving them an objective literary status, the author selects a rather representative writer, Shau Lih-Hong, from this group of female writers to be the subject of this research. By combining the current female issues subject extensively discussed in the literary circles, the author examines Shau Lih-Hong’s female subject of anti- think theories in her novels. The outline of each chapter is as follows: Chapter One-Introduction. Depict the motivation and purposes of this research, and in the same time explain the writer’s three founding theories in the mental state in creating, the modern women’s mental state viewpoints, and the post-colonial standpoint, and then define the range and limitation of the research. Chapter Two- The mental state in creating of Shau Lih-Hong. This chapter integrates her mental state of composing by looking at the character of creation, creative consciousness, and the direction of the works. Chapter Three-The ego of the females in the novel. This chapter aims at discovering the process of self-relief after their egos being suppressed, and thus result in conflicts and controverses. From this, we can find out the female writer’s sense of self identification in Shau Lih-Hong’s novels. Chapter Four-The interactions of female figures and others in the novel. This chapter mainly analyzes the females’ circumstances and position in relation to parentship, sexual relationships and marital relationship. Chapter Five-Judge the novel of Shau Lih-Hong by “post-colonial standpoint”. This chapter divides the female image within novel into to four greatest types. First, to analyze female approbation to the culture of themselves; synthesize again investigate female in love and ego in the marriage subject; induce the fixed position tradition literature give to Shau Lih-Hong’s novels, finally from both side of approbation and subject to relocate the novel of Shau Lih-Hong. Chapter Six-Conclusion. This chapter synthesize each chapter above, make an integrated commentary of Shau Lih-Hong and female person that mentioned in her novel, then the writer put forward suggestion and applications that for the follow-up study.

Most of their marital status was “married”. Buddhists made up for most of the population and Taoist were the second largest group among them. Their level of education was primarily elementary or middle school. The longest volunteer experience in community care centers was three to less than five years and the second longest was one to less than three years. Most of the volunteers participated in two to three community volunteer groups. In terms of total volunteer experience, the longest was five to less than seven year, next was three to less than five years. B.Community characteristics: 11 of the communities had been formed for over a decade. Volunteer captains of each center were mostly elected by members of the volunteer group. Most community development associations had between 101 and 150 members, the second ones had between 151 and 200 members. Characteristics of the volunteer organizations: Most had over five volunteer groups with a total of 101 to 150 members; the second highest ones had a total of 151 to 200 members. Most of the individual volunteer groups had between 21 and 30 members. C.When analyzing the volunteer basics of each center, the characteristics of their volunteer experiences, they can be classified into the following types: “primarily married females”, “married but of mixed age groups”, “active participants of different volunteer groups”, “long-standing” and“still developing. The characteristics of the communities and volunteer organizations can be classified into “the democratic type”, “the high cohesion type” and “the flourishing type”, each with different levels of motives. D.There are seven motives for volunteer participation in community care centers. The first is self-improvement. They felt strongest with “By becoming a volunteer and interacting with others, my viewpoint becomes more mature,” and weakest with “When the elderly are unhappy, I am able to find ways to assist them.” The second motive is interpersonal relationships, with the volunteers feeling strongest towards“After I became a volunteer, I made more friends and my social network has also broadened,” and weakest towards“When not on duty, we volunteers will get together or socialize.” The third is expectations. They felt strongest with “I feel like I can benefit my future generations with my good deeds by doing volunteer work” and weakest with “Being awarded as a volunteer is dignifying, so I like to participate in volunteer work.” The fourth motive is rewards. Volunteers felt strongest with “Being a volunteer can make me happy every day,” and weakest with “I earn praise or rewards for being a volunteer.” The fifth is altruism with the strongest feelings towards “Seeing others happy makes me happy as well,” and weakest towards “I like coming here to do volunteer work for the harmony of the community.” The sixth motive is personal needs with the strongest feelings towards “I think it can satisfy my need to do good,” and the weakest towards“When I think about doing something worthwhile, I think of volunteer work.” The last motive is to pass time. The strongest feelings were towards “I would rather be a volunteer than waste time doing nothing at home,” and the weakest feelings were towards “I no longer watch television alone at home.” The researcher offers seven suggestions based on the findings of this research: (1) Plan strategies to draw in volunteers that are of different gender and age groups for the community care centers; (2) Integrate religious beliefs and values in Chinese culture when recruiting volunteers; (3) Satisfy the different needs of different volunteer types; (4) Discover community residents with free time and encourage them to participate in volunteer work; (5) Pay attention to the different needs of senior volunteers when implementing professional training; (6) Encourage democratic ways in forming volunteer group captains in order to attract more participation; (7) Design a variety of rewards and incentives based on the needs of different volunteer groups.

In 1992, Wendy Cooling from British “Book Trust” Foundation started a program called Bookstart. Basically the program was a parent-child activity, which encourages parents to start reading along with their child; it also advocates that children should start to access the reading environment at the early stage of life. In 2003, Taiwan made its first step promote the Bookstart program, which is driven by Taichung Library. This research is using the history background of Taichung Shalu Library, and its partnership with related participants, in order to explore public-private partnerships and give policy recommendation. The participants of this research project included: Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau, library, Hsin Yi Foundation, and the parent-child book club participants. The results of this research project are mainly based on heavily literature reviews, and also through some in-depth interview analysis. At the end of this research project, I come up with the conclusion that: the participants in this research project all share a common purpose, which is stating the parent-child activity being described above as early as possible. However, without a clear policy action and also good partnerships, it is quite difficult to implement this program. This research project has discovered two factors that will have a major impact to the public-private partnerships. The first problem will occur within the public organization sector , such as: lack of human resources and also financial funding; lack of horizontal linkages; lack of innovation and integration of marketing strategy; the unclear responsibilities between Taichung City Cultural Affairs Bureau and the local library; the difficulty of the personal information protection Act. Secondly, distrust between different participants. At the end of this research project, I will make policy recommendations based on practical and theoretical aspects. Practice aspects will included: internal integration within public sectors, how Hsin Yi Foundation regarding corporate social responsibility as their own responsibility. In theoretical aspects parts, I propose the partnership between the following two models, which is ternary and participants’ mode. At the end of this research, I discover that the participants’ model is the most suitable model to implement Bookstart program.

Shau Lih–Hong is a well-known Taiwanese female writer in the early 80’s, when she won the Literature Award of United Daily News for her novel 《A Thousand Moons on a Thousand Rivers》. The novel incorporated various kinds of traditional folk customs and relationship considerations, and was praised as a masterpiece which glorified traditional culture and beauty of the countryside. Keen observation, emphasis on serendipity and affection for opera contribute to Shau Lih–Hong’s unique writing style. 《A Thousand Moons on a Thousand Rivers》was mostly based on rich traditional Chinese culture and the common life in early Taiwanese history, offering colorful life experiences of traditional women. These experiences included how to play a proper role to maintain the harmony at home, to deal with relationships, and to search for inner peace. This novel primarily represented how women yielded to their destiny and abided by the so-called feminine virtues. 《A Thousand Moons on a Thousand Rivers》 is an autobiography novel of Shau Lih–Hong herself, who shared similar background with the protagonist Zhenguan. They were both influenced by Confucian traditions and appreciated Confucian ethics and educational style, which Shau Lih–Hong usually described in her novel. Making a female character as the subject of her novel, Shau Lih–Hong wrote about women’s life in the 60’s in Taiwan. Her characters originally held a humble, tender and uncompetitive attitude toward destiny, but after encountering different life conditions and the tortures of being in love, they realized that life was fragile and turned to Buddhism in order for inner and spiritual peace. Shau Lih–Hong’s 《A Thousand Moons on a Thousand Rivers》 reflects the author’s own feminine sense of destiny, namely the identification with the role of women in traditional codes, presents social expectations toward women through traditional customs and etiquette, and tries to seek identification with traditional etiquette when being a mother, a wife, a daughter, and a daughter-in-law. Shau Lih–Hong shows sympathy for women’s inner affections, so the female characters in her novel, though with chastity and tenderness, and not good at expressing their true feelings, could find their own way to conquer the wound of love, get rid of the cruel destiny, and realize the philosophy of living with the religious aid. With the understanding of Shau Lih–Hong’s traditional customs and etiquette, inner affections, and the meaning of spiritual quest, the conclusion meditates on the traditional value and significance of women.

The mission for the establishment of public markets is to provide sites for residents daily purchase. Shalu Public Market offers the same service for inhabitants in Shalu Town. Its long-standing development and prosperity depend on the needs from the local people. With the flux of surroundings, the change of consumers' buying behavior, and the rise of other retail markets, however, its prosecutors now face some management difficulties-the falls of competitive competence diminished a great deal of inside vendors' business activities; instead, hundreds of outside vendors appeared, surrounded the market, and caught most of the consumers. That’s why we must analyse the outer and inner Shalu Public Market business surroundings and draw up effective management strategies to improve and promote its value and importance. The whole research process can be decided into two parts. First, through the records, data, and government publications, we know more about the history of Shalu Town and the influence by the government policy to help analyse the transitions of Shalu Public Market. Second, by doing investigation and interviews with inside and outside vendors and questionaires on the inside vendors and outside vendors questionaires on the inside vendors and consumers, we analyse and compare these two business spaces on consumption habits, business activities, the size of both trade areas, the degrees of consumers satisfaction and other factors. Then, we employ S.W.O.T. Analysis Model to fix on the management strategies. During the research, we also found some significant differences on ages, distance, purchase frequency, stay time, budget and product choices between the consumers of the public market Moreover, inside venders not only compete with but also rely on the huge amount of outside vendors who attract lots of customers to walk into the market each day. There exists a competitive-cooperative relationship between them. Our Shalu Public Market Management Strategies focus on three aspects, the organization, the space and surroundings, and the management. Firstly, reinforcing the function of the Public Market Union can strengthen the abilities of vendors' self-management, help them actually participate in the whole running and combine with the community development to extend services and satisfy residents needs. Secondly, improving facilities, maintaining the market order, and demanding sanitation qualities can create a comfortable and convenient environment for shopping. Lastly, providers should start market segmentations, offer high-quality services, hold activities or do marketing on holidays or festivals, receive training and study other successful cases.

This study used Patanker's Power Law Scheme and MSIMPLEC method to simulate and analyze the flow field and heat dissipation inside the room of steam turbine in Ton-Shau power plant of Taiwan Power Company. The size and location of outlet openings, and the size of inlet openings are fixed, but several different locations of inlet openings are selected for the purposes of analysis. The analysis from the results, shows that when one opening located above the heat source, and the other one on the opposite wall located below the heat source, this can increase the heat dissipation, lower the average temperature around the heat source, and is the case with better cooling effect.
