Abstract:
AbstractLong periodic waves propagating in a closed channel are considered. The fluid consists of two layers of constant densities separated by a layer in which the density varies continuously. The numerical results of Vanden-Broeck and Turner [8] are extended. It is shown that their solutions are particular members of a family of solutions. Solutions are selected by requiring that the streamfunction takes values on the upper and lower walls which are consistent with a uniform stream far upstream. The new solutions are qualitatively similar to those of Vanden-Broeck and Turner [8]. In particular, there are periodic waves characterized by a train of ripples at their troughs. It is shown numerically that these waves approach solitary waves with oscillatory tails as their wavelength increases. Moreover special solutions for which the amplitude of the ripples is almost zero are identified. Such solutions without ripples were previously found for solitary waves with surface tension.

Abstract:
Sustainable management of water resources is multidimensional and complex process often requires the incorporation of efforts of many impacts and responsibilities of concerning institutions. This research work is devoted for developing of web service based Water Resource Management Information System (WRMIS). The WRMIS has been developed in accordance with the European Union Water Framework Directive and EIONET ReportNet infrastructure requirements to environmental water sector reporting by EU member states. It is realised as a web portal where users can receive information on environmental water sector, combining data from the participating data warehouses and giving an opportunity to extract useful information by the available functions and tools. The WRMIS portal allows the access to information of data warehouses on the surface water quality in rivers and lakes, ground water, and point sources (emissions). A detailed description of the main components of the Water Resource Management Information System is given, the advantages of Web Service‐based solution are presented, and the direction of a further WRMIS development in the future is shown.

Abstract:
Binder & Vanden-Broeck (2005) showed there are no subcritical or critical solutions satisfying the radiation condition for steady flows past a flat plate. By using a weakly nonlinear analysis, it is shown that such flows exist for a curved plate. Fully nonlinear solutions are computed by a boundary integral equation method, and new nonlinear solutions for supercritical and generalized critical flows past a curved plate are presented.

Abstract:
Among the most tantalizing propositions of mathematics are those generalizations that are easily and concisely stated and are readily shown to be true for specific cases yet, despite their apparent simplicity, defy concise proof. Outstanding examples of such propositions include Fermat's last theorem (see Vanden Eynden [1989]), the Goldbach conjecture, and the four-color theorem. Because such propositions can be understood by students with almost no previous background in mathematics, they are easily introduced in mathematics courses intended for the liberal arts student.

Abstract:
Local solutions near the intersection of a free surface with a vertical wall are constructed numerically. Both gravity and surface tension are included in the dynamic boundary condition. It was shown that the solutions are characterized by the angle γ between the free surface and the wall at the separation point. There is a solution for each value of π/2<γ<π. As γ→π/2 and γ→π, the solutions reduce to the pure gravity solutions of Vanden-Broeck & Tuck [1].

Abstract:
The article is devoted to predicting and preventing urban vandalism. In the article described current state of research on structure of vandalism – motives, attitudes, ideas. It is shown that the activity approach can serve as a theoretical basis for study of the internal plan of vandal actions. On its basis, a theoretical model is determined, including the motive of vandalism and the ideas that regulate its implementation. These are the subjective value of vandal action and value that subject attaches to vandal action. The organisation, procedure and results of empirical research are described. Using a sample of young people living in 106 Russian cities (n = 650 people), we study the relationship between subjective ideas about the ability to commit a vandal act, its motives, attributed value and meaning. The results show that there is a conjugate effect of these representations on subjective ability to behave like a vandal. Their interpretation shows the presence of opposite approaches to the assessment of vandalism – from rejection to acceptance.

Abstract:
The article discusses the influence and main causes of nutrient compounds in surface waters. The article is aimed at investigating changes in nutrients – nitrogen and its compounds in the river Šventoji. The samples of analysis were collected in the town of Anykščiai in order to assess the influence of the stream of the Anykšta and waste water treatment. The largest concentrations of nutrients were identified from waste water treatment; however, it had not exceeded the MAC, except for February 2012. The conducted analysis has shown that the river Šventoji belongs to the class of a high ecological status, because physic – chemical quality elements such as nitrate – nitrogen (0,60 mg/l) and ammonium – nitrogen (0,03 mg/l) have not exceeded the range <1,30 mg/l and 0,10 mg/l. Article in Lihuanian. Santrauka Straipsnyje nagrinėjama biogeninių medžiagų įtaka paviršiniams vandens telkiniams ir pagrindinės šių medžiagų atsiradimo priežastys. Tyrimo tikslas – azoto turinčių biogeninių medžiagų – nitritų, nitratų, amonio koncentracijų Šventosios vandenyje analizė. Mėginiai buvo imti Anykščiuose ir už miesto ribų, įvertinta Anykštos upelio, komunalinių nuotekų valyklos įtaka Šventosios vandens užterštumui. Didžiausi biogeninių medžiagų kiekiai Šventojoje nustatyti už nuotekų valyklos, tačiau jie neviršijo DLK, išskyrus sausį. Pagal fizikinius-cheminius kokybės elementus – nitratų azotą (0,60 mg/l) ir amonio azotą (0,03 mg/l) Šventoji atitinka labai geros ir geros ekologinės būklės klasę, nes jos vandens kokybės reikšmės patenka atitinkamai į <0,10 mg/l ir 1,30–2,30 mg/l reikšmių intervalą.

Abstract:
Form theorists have shown increasing interest in applying the methodologies of Caplin and of Hepokoski and Darcy to sonata forms of the nineteenth century. Many of these efforts proceed under the assumption that late eighteenth-century norms continued to influence Romantic sonata form even in the face of nineteenth-century innovations. Vande Moortele contrasts this “negative” approach to an as-yet-unrealized “positive” theory that would derive its concepts directly from nineteenth-century music. A multipart strategy interrogates the positive methodology championed by Vande Moortele and such like-minded theorists as Horton and Wingfield. Examination of Horton’s recent analysis of Brahms’s First Symphony reveals the unacknowledged presence of classical norms casting a “negative” light—although an essential and beneficial one—on his presumably “positive” methodology. A corpus study of subordinate theme closure in Dvořák’s mature chamber music responds both to Horton’s interest in asynchrony between formal design and tonal structure and to his and Vande Moortele’s calls for expanding the range of composers included in these endeavors. Attention to a less studied composer betrays the persistent gravitational pull of classical conventions, in contrast to Horton’s and Vande Moortele’s argument that a Romantic-centered corpus would tend to diminish that pull. Detailed analyses of select Dvořák movements focus on subordinate theme closure but also embrace broader concerns, such as form-functional contrast among P, S, C, and coda; characteristics that signal end-of-the-beginning versus end-of-the-end functions for cadences; the interaction of tonal pairing and formal design; and Dvořák’s recapitulatory reinterpretations of his expositional strategies. The analyses illustrate limitations of corpus study as contrasted with close reading of individual movements. The close readings underscore the need to engage both circumpolar norms and progressive linear developments, even in music written in the last decades of the nineteenth century.

Abstract:
The Žuvintas Lake, located in southern Lithuania in the basin of the Dovine River is one of the biggest lakes and the oldest natural reserves of the country. However, the changes in the hydrology of the Dovine River basin, caused by large‐scale melioration and water management works carried out in the 20th century, have resulted in significant alteration of hydrological regime and decrease in biodiversity of the Žuvintas Lake and surrounding wetlands. In order to prevent the ongoing deterioration of the Lake and wetlands solutions have to be found. Therefore, various scenarios have been analysed to evaluate the impact of water management alternatives. For these scenarios the physically‐based distributed parameter model SIMGRO was used. The results have shown that natural water regime in the Žuvintas Lake is hardly reversible. However, the replacement of sluice‐gates implemented at the outlet of the Žuvintas Lake by overflow weir as well as the blocking of drainage ditches and the removal of scrubs and trees in the wetlands surrounding the Lake can be highly successful measures to improve hydrological conditions. Abstract:
The development of fourteenth- and fifteenth-century sacred polyphony is linked closely not only to the Mass and divine services of the Roman Catholic Church, but equally to the rise of lay devotional congregations who sponsored their own services, often musically elaborate, at private chapels and altars. Within this popular phenomenon of lay devotion in the Low Countries, several northern confraternities can be cited for their very early regular use of polyphony. A polyphonic Salve service was established in 1362 by the Marian confraternity at St Goedele in Brussels, and Reinhard Strohm has shown that, by 1396, the Marian Guild of the Dry Tree (Ghilde vanden droghen Boome) in Bruges sponsored weekly masses sung in polyphony by its guild members. That polyphony was central to some fourteenth-century confraternity services is confirmed by the records of the Illustrious Confraternity of Our Lady in 's-Hertogenbosch, founded in 1318 in St John's Church.

Using the bounded sigmoid function and two-order Butterworth low-pass filter, a self-controlling feedback method for regulate the motion of a chaotic system is presented in this paper. It is shown that such controller has the advantage of being easy to implement based on the measurable input signals. A rigorous stability proof is provided from LaSalle Invariance theorem. Furthermore, the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed feedback control strategy is illustrated by means of the numerical simulations of two-well Duffing Vander Pol oscillator. Finally, the result reveals that the enough large maximum amplitude results in a more possible regular domain in parameter space of the controlled oscillator.

Full text
Abstract:
The problem of viscous fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell with moving contact lines is considered. In contrast to the usual situation where the displaced fluid coats the solid surface in the form of thin films, here, both the displacing and the displaced fluids make direct contact with the solid. The principal differences between these two situations are in the ranges of attainable values of the gapwise component of the interfacial curvature (the component due to the bending of the fluid interface across the small gap of the Hele-Shaw cell), and in the introduction of two additional parameters for the case with moving contact lines. These parameters are the receding contact angle, and the sensivity of the dynamic angle to the speed of the contact line. Our objective is the prediction of the shape and widths of the fingers in the limit of small capillary number, Uμ/σ. Here, U denotes the finger speed, μ denotes the dynamic viscosity of the more viscous displaced fluid, and σ denotes the surface tension of the fluid interface. As might be expected, there are similarities and differences between the two problems. Despite the fact that different equations arise, we find that they can be analysed using the techniques introduced by McLean & Saffman and Vanden-Broeck for the thin-film case. The nature of the multiplicity of solutions also appears to be similar for the two problems. Our results indicate that when contact lines are present, the finger shapes are sensitive to the value of the contact angle only in the vicinity of its nose, reminiscent of experiments where bubbles or wires are placed at the nose of viscous fingers when thin films are present. On the other hand, in the present problem at least two distinct velocity scales emerge with well-defined asymptotic limits, each of these two cases being distinguished by the relative importance played by the two components of the curvature of the fluid interface. It is found that the widths of fingers can be significantly smaller than half the width of the cell.

Abstract:
To improve yield in upland conditions, near-isogenic lines (NILs) of the major-effect drought yield quantitative trait locus qDTY12.1 in rice (Oryza sativa L.) were developed in the background of the upland variety Vandana. These NILs have shown greater water uptake a larger proportion of lateral roots, and higher transpiration efficiency under drought than Vandana, and one NIL (481-B) was selected as having the highest yield. In this study, the NILs were assessed in two greenhouse and 18 upland field trials for their response to drought and different soil textures. Performance of qDTY12.1 NILs was not affected by soil texture but showed a notable response to drought stress severity. The yield advantage of 481-B over Vandana was highest in field trials with intermittent drought stress, in which the mean trial yield was greater than 0.5 t ha–1, and in the least favourable well watered trial. The effects of qDTY12.1 on water uptake were most apparent under mild to moderate stress but not in very severe drought or well watered treatments, whereas the lateral root and transpiration efficiency responses were observed under a range of conditions. These results highlight the varying response of qDTY12.1 across upland environments and the complexity of multiple mechanisms acting together to confer an effect on rice yield under drought.

Abstract:
The paper reports results of the experiments carried out at Fortore (Foggia, South Italy) and Mosina (Poznan, Poland) drinking water treatment plants aimed at DBPs control. Pilot scale GAC filters were installed in both plants in order to assess the efficacy of different kind of GAC for chlorites, NOM and THMs removal. Both pilot plants operated with and without chlorine dioxide pre-disinfection. In Fortore plant, because of free chlorine was added in ClO2 pre‐disinfection solution, THMs formation was evaluated. Results showed an high efficacy of chlorites removal on GAC filters up to 5500 and 10000 bed volumes for mineral and vegetal GAC in Fortore and up to 11000 bed volumes in Mosina. A preliminary characterization of natural organic matter (NOM) dissolved in Fortore raw water was performed as well, in order to confirm its reactivity towards chlorine dioxide. The presence of small molecules (< 500 Da) in Fortore pre‐disinfected water, has resulted in THMs and carboxylic acids formation due a fast reaction with Cl2‐ClO2. GAC columns have shown percentages of removal ranging from 60 to 72% for THMs and ranging from 14.6 to 43% for TOC, so that adsorption represents an essential step for DBPs control. Santrauka Straipsnyje pateikiami eksperimentu, darytu atliekant DBPs kontrole Fortore (Foggia, Pietu Italija) ir Mosina (Poznan, Lenkija) geriamojo vandens ruošimo irenginiuose, rezultatai. Eksperimentiniai skirtingos rūšies GAC filtrai, skirti chlorido, natūraliu organiniu medžiagu (NOM) ir THMs šalinimo efektyvumui nustatyti, buvo irengti abiejuose vandens ruošimo irenginiuose. Abu eksperimentiniai vandens ruošimo irenginiai veike atlikus pirmini dezinfekavima chloro dioksidu ir dezinfekavimo neatlikus. Fortore vandens ruošimo irenginiuose laisvaji chlora pridedant i ClO2 pirmines dezinfekcijos tirpala, vertinta THMs susidarymas.

Four recent studies about film experience in Flanders. For a long time, film historians limited their studies to the content and formal aspects of film on the one hand and film directors on the other hand. During the 1990’s, the area of interest was widened and since then the public and the total viewing experience have also been recognized as relevant historical themes. Some recent publications by Flemish authors demonstrate that perception may be analysed from various perspectives. The main topic of De verlichte stad (The illuminated city) (2007), an anthology edited by Daniël Biltereyst and Philippe Meers, is the history of the infrastructure and the pillarisation behind the cinema landscape. De Vlaschaard (flax grower)1943 (2007) by Roel Vande Winkel and Ine Van linthout demonstrate convincingly that it is meaningful to study the impact on the audience from the perspective of the programming as well. This precise reconstruction of the controversial adaptation of Stijn Streuvel’s main breakthrough novel for the screen, in the middle of wartime, looks in detail at the surprising welcome enjoyed by this German production. Filming for Flanders (2008), by Biltereyst and Vande Winkel, reminds us how for a long time feature films were shown as part of a larger programme that also included current events and even propaganda. Clemens De Landtsheer, the first secretary of the IJzer Pilgrimage Committee, is brought into the limelight as one of the most important promoters of the foundation myth of the Flemish movement. Finally, the seven philosophical conversations, which Johan Swinnen engaged in for Reflecties (reflections) (2009), demonstrate that film projections do not only evoke historical questions.

Abstract:
The weed Galium aparine L., commonly known as cleavers or goose grass, is an exotic plant in New Zealand (Webb et al. 1988; Reid 1998). Craemer et al. (1999) described a new gall mite species, Cecidophyes rouhollahi Craemer (Acari: Eriophyidae), from this weed in France and suggested that this new species might have potential as a biological control agent against G. spurium L. in Canada and western US where the weed was becoming more problematic (Malik & Vanden Born 1988; Whitson 1991). This mite species was later shown to result in severe stunting and complete prevention of seed production in a related weed G. spurium in greenhouse tests and was approved for field release against this weed in Canada (Sobhian et al. 2004). This mite species was recently reported on G. aparine from Auckland, New Zealand (Martin 2017). Mites prefer feeding on the young terminal leaves and can induce the leaf edges to roll inwards and curl (Fig. 1A, B, E). Martin (2017) noted: “No natural enemies of this species of mite have been recorded, but predatory mites may feed on these mites”. We report here on an assemblage of predatory mites (Phytoseiidae) associated with C. rouhollahi on G. aparine in Auckland.

Salicylamides (N-aryl-substituted hydroxybenzamides): well-known organic compounds with diverse biological activity, which were originally investigated as antimicrobial and antifungal substances. Salicylamides have also been used as anthelmintic or molluscicidal agents in human and veterinary medicine. The most famous is 5,2'-dichloro-4'-nitrosalicylamide (niclosamide, yomezan – Germany), resynthesized in the USSR under the name of fenasal, which is effective in treating diphyllobothriasis and hymenolepidosis and has molluscicidal properties. The works of domestic and foreign scientists F.S. Mikhaylitsyn, H. Vanden Bosshe, L.M. Scheibel, P. Andreus, G. Bonse, and others are devoted to the synthesis of salicylamides, their biological activity. I. Arkhipov, R. Gonnert, studied the anthelmintic activity of salicylamides. E. Schraufstatter, H. Mrozik et al. In the works of various authors the “structure-activity linkage” of the synthesized amides is shown. It has been established that the presence of an amide or thioamide bond, substituted amides, is important for anthelmintic activity. The presence of a hydroxyl group in the 2nd position of the aromatic ring of the salicylamide acid fragment is the main condition for the manifestation of activity with respect to tape helminths and trematodes. The best profile of the biological activity of salicylamides was obtained by introducing chlorine into various positions of acid and amine fragments. Acylation of the hydroxyl group in salicylamides leads to a decrease in their toxicity.

Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) plays a vital role in the DNA synthesis by reducing dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid which is an essential component. Synthetic ligands like methotrexate (MTX), aminopterin (AMP) and their analogues act as potential anti metabolites by mimicking the coenzyme dihydrofolic acid (DHFA) they inhibit the activity of DHFR antagonistically. Several ligands which are similar to MTX analogues and 6, 8 substituted 2 – naphthyls (NAP) which can mimic the pteridyl group of DHFA have been computationally designed. These ligands were proposed to hinder the formation N5, N10 methylene tetrahydrofolic acid (THFA) coenzyme, which is essential for the DNA synthesis. The docking studies were done using grid, generated with the 0.9 Vander Waals scaling for non polar bonds in the active site of the receptor. These newly designed ligands such as 14 -21 ,23 and 28 have shown good docking scores and predicted activities when compared to already existing ligands MTX and its analogues.

Abstract:
The article examines the formation of the Chipko environmental movement, whose activity in 1980 led to the suspension of long-term deforestation in northern India. The historical connection of Chipko with the campaigns of forest satyagraha, which were widespread in northern India during the struggle for independence, is examined. It is shown what role such Gandhian leaders as Mira Behn and Sarala Behn played in transforming the goals of satyagraha. Attention is drawn to the role of such a women's organization as Sarvodaya Mandal, which has become Chipko's organizational basis. The important organizational and philosophical role of such an environmental movement leader as Sunderlal Bahuguna, who became Chipko's true soul, is shown. The role of Vandana Shiva, which is not only a researcher of the Chipko movement, but is also a leading environmental theorist and practitioner of modern India, is examined.

Abstract:
Two-dimensional free-surface flow past disturbances in an open channel is a classical problem in hydrodynamics—a problem that has received considerable attention over the last two centuries (e.g., see Lamb’s Treatise, 1879). With traces back to Russell’s experimental observations of the Great Wave of Translation in 1834, Korteweg and de Vries (1895), and others, derived an unforced equation to describe the balance between nonlinearity and dispersion required to model the solitary wave. More recently, Akylas (1984) derived a forced KdV equation to model a pressure distribution on the free-surface (e.g., a ship). Since then, the forced KdV equation has been shown to be a useful model approximation for two-dimensional flow past disturbances in an open channel. In this paper, we review the stationary solutions of the forced KdV equation for four types of localised disturbances: (i) a flat plate separating two free surfaces; (ii) a compact bump, or dip in the channel bottom topography; (iii) a compact distribution of pressure on the free surface and (iv) a step-wise change in the otherwise constant horizontal level of the channel bottom topography. Moreover, Dias and Vanden-Broeck (2002) developed a phase plane method to analyse flow over a bump, and this general approach has also been applied to the three other types of forcing (see Binder et al., 2005–2015, and others). In this study, we use eleven basic flow types to classify the steady solutions of the forced KdV equation using the phase plane method. Additionally, considering solutions that are wave-free both far upstream and far downstream, we compare KdV model approximations of the uniform flow conditions in the far-field with exact solutions of the full problem. In particular, we derive a new KdV model approximation for the upstream dimensionless flow-rate which is conveniently given in terms of the known downstream dimensionless flow-rate.

Abstract Pas de deux with a theological legacy. Jürgen Habermas on David Hume and Immanuel Kant In his latest opus magnum, Jürgen Habermas reconsiders the history of philosophy from a peculiar perspective: the true and unique nature of philosophy is shown to have been given shape in philosophy’s dispute with Christian theology. This article reviews Habermas’ chapter on the Enlightenment, in which Habermas casts David Hume and Immanuel Kant dancing their own pas de deux with that theological legacy. After having sketched the historical scripts in which Hume and Kant are involved by Habermas, I will critically assess the author’s claim that while Hume ends up refusing the dance and (hence) betraying (enlightened) philosophy’s nature, Kant accepts and transforms the heritage, yet ends up failing to give his pas de deux a genuine modern and enlightened twist.

Abstract Research among twentieth-century Dutch and Flemish emigrants has shown that they usually gave up their mother tongue quickly, within two or three generations, after emigration. In the twenty-first century the situation of emigrants has changed drastically: due to the internet and social media it is much easier to keep in touch with the homelands. Does this have consequences for the preservation of the Dutch language and culture among emigrants? How much do emigrants value the Dutch language, culture and identity? These questions have been investigated in the pilot research ‘Vertrokken Nederlands ‐ Emigrated Dutch’, conducted by the Dutch Language Union and the Meertens Institute and led by the author of this article. The research has been conducted using a new methodology, employing social media and citizen scientists. This article describes the results of this first worldwide study of Dutch language, culture and identity among Dutch and Flemish emigrants. The main conclusion of the research is that for the vast majority of emigrants in the twenty-first century, the Dutch language and culture still play an important role in daily life, and the Dutch language is still widely used in the country of residence, especially within the family, in social media and in online news services.

Abstract:
The understanding of the activity of neurons in the brain has been modeled as nonlinear systems using mathematical modeling for decades. Nonlinearity in brain dynamics is complex structure to do mathematically but computational techniques make this area of research quite interesting and easy to study the dynamics. With advancement of new technology, mathematical and computational studies are more preferable to understand the behavior of neurons in a single cell to global cognitive process. In the present study, the impacts of different externally applied currents on the behavior of neurons in a simple BVP model (Bonhoeffer-Vander Pol Model) are analyzed thoroughly. The results of BVP model are similar to the characteristics of neurons shown by the Hodgkin-Huxley Model. In the BPV model, when system is stable, neurons are in resting-state. Unlike Hodgkin-Huxley model which follows all-or-none law, the BVP model does not follow this all-or-none rule. In the BVP model, there is an intermediate phase where no spike forms, but when sufficiently large input applied then spikes emerge. On applying constant current in BVP model, system is stable while it exhibits oscillatory behavior when current is applied externally above threshold value of it. If sinusoidal, continuous wavelet, and har wavelet form of external applied currents are injected then continuous firing emerges which have several interesting dynamics. Numerical simulations have been performed to understand the bifurcation analysis of the BVP model. Oneparameter and two-parameter bifurcation diagrams have been drawn in which threshold current values are discussed.

Additionally, changes of ceramic samples capacity is to end the drying process, associated with elimination of humidity that would not compose defects ‐ gaps, fractures, fragmentation etc. In this work it was shown, how the selected stages of drying regime influence the structural parameters of ceramics (reserve of porous volume, heterogeneity degree of structure, maximum rate of capillary rise according to watering front, capillary rate of mass flow, water absorption) and vice verse, how the selection of the dimensions of the stages for drying regime depends on the desired values of the of ceramics. Santrauka Džiovinimas gaminant keraminius dirbinius yra labai svarbus technologinis procesas, nes džiovinant turi baigtis keraminių bandinių tūrio pokyčiai, susiję su drėgmės pasišalinimu, kad neatsirastų defektų – plyšių, įtrūkių, nuskilimų ir t. t. Darbe buvo išnagrinėta, kaip džiovinimo režimo parinkimas gali lemti defektų atsiradimą ir tokias struktūrines keraminių bandinių charakteristikas, kaip poringosios erdvės rezervas, struktūros nevienalytiškumo laipsnis, maksimalus kapiliarinio pakilimo pagal drėkinimo frontą greitis, kapiliarinis masės srauto greitis ir vandens įmirkis. Tikslui pasiekti keraminiai bandiniai buvo paruošti parinkus 8 džiovinimo režimus, o kitus technologinius veiksnius (formavimo mišinio sudėtis, degimo temperarūra, temperatūros kėlimo greitis degant ir kt.) palikus nekintamus. Nustačius keraminės šukės struktūrines charakteristikas ir atlikus gautų duomenų statistinę analizę, buvo sudarytos empirinės lygtys. Pagal jas buvo pagrįsta, kaip kiekvienas parinktas džiovinimo režimo etapo dydis lemia struktūrinių rodiklių verčių kitimą ir kaip galima reguliuoti džiovinimo režimą, norint gauti tam tikras struktūrinių charakteristikų vertes.

Abstract:
AbstractThe motion of a two-dimensional bubble rising at a constant velocity U in an inclined tube of width H is considered. The bubble extends downwards without limit, and is bounded on the right by a wall of the tube, and on the left by a free surface. The same flow configuration describes also a jet emerging from a nozzle and falling down along an inclined wall. The acceleration of gravity g and the surface tension T are included in the free surface condition. The problem is characterized by the Froude number the angle β between the left wall and the horizontal, and the angle γ between the free surface and the right wall at the separation point. Numerical solutions are obtained via series truncation for all values of 0 < β < π. The results extend previous calculations of Vanden-Broeck [12–14] for β = π/2 and of Couët and Strumolo [3] for 0 < β < π/2. It is found that the behavior of the solutions depends on whether 0 < β 2π/3 or 2π/3 ≤ β < π. When T = 0, it is shown that there is a critical value F of Froude number for each 0 < β 2π/3 such that solutions with γ = 0, π/3 and π - β occur for F > Fc F = Fc and F < Fc respectively, and that all solutions are characterized by γ = 0 for 2π/3 ≤ β < π. When a small amount of surface tension T is included in the free surface condition, it is found that for each 0 < β < π there exists an infinite discrete set of values of F for which γ = π - β. A particular value F* of the Froude number for which T = 0 and γ = π - β is selected by taking the limit as T approaches zero. The numerical values of F* and the corresponding free surface profiles are found to be in good agreement with experimental data for bubbles rising in an inclined tube when 0 < β < π/2.

Abstract:
Numerous studies have shown the importance of breed-related differences between hematological and biochemical results in veterinary medicine. The aim of this study is to determine hematologic and biochemical Reference Intervals (RIs) for 5 hunting dog breeds from a blood donor database, adopting an indirect sampling method, and to compare them with laboratory established and published RIs to identify possible breed and attitude-related differences. The study analyzed the blood parameters of 445 adults (222 females and 223 male, with age ranging from 2 to 8 years, mean age 5.3 years), client-owned, clinically healthy blood donor dogs of 5 breeds: 156 Ariégeois, 52 Bleu de Gascogne, 64 Bracco italiano, 123 Segugio italiano, and 50 Briquet Griffon Vandeen. Statistical analysis was performed as recommended by the American Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology (ASVCP) guidelines. RIs for red blood cells (RBC), hematocrit (HCT), hemoglobin (HB), main corpuscular volume (MCV), main corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), main corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), red distribution widht (RDW), white blood cells (WBC), and differential leukocytes count, PLT, Albumin, Total Protein, Urea, Creatinine, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) for each of the 5 breeds were performed, and significant differences with the established RIs were detected. We found significant differences in 12 hematologic and serum biochemical analytes for which a breed-specific variation appears to be the most plausible explanation. New RIs for HCT, MCH, MCHC, RDW, PLT, Monocytes, Eosinophils, Albumin, Urea, Creatinine, AST, and ALT are provided for at least 1 breed. Breed-specific RIs for adult hunting dogs will help avoid misinterpretation of laboratory results in these breeds.

Abstract:
In Lithuania centralized municipal wastewater treatment technologies are applied quite effectively, but there is little evidence of the functioning of individual small wastewater treatment plants. The paper presents the small device AT-6, in the city of Vilnius, and the treated sewage results (BDS7, nitrate, ammonium, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and phosphate concentrations). Studies have shown that treated sewage indicators based on ammonium and nitrate ion concentrations are good. These substances are 2–10 times less than it can be in drinking water according to HN 24: 2003. Concentration of phosphates in the treated sewage ranged from 3.57 to 9.33 mg/L and exceeded the indicators, which were compared. The phosphorus environmental aspect is not dangerous, because treated sewage is not discharged into surface water bodies. Dealing from the pattern of biological indicators and enzymatic activity, the quality of activated sludge is good. Treated sewage does not impair the natural state.

Abstract:
Background: Short-term outcomes for the INBONE I and INBONE II tibial stems have been favorable. The INBONE-II talus has been shown to have lower reoperation and failure rates compared to its predecessor at short term follow-up. The purpose of the present study was to assess mid-term outcomes for the third generation, two component total ankle prosthesis at 5 to 9 years follow-up, evaluating both the tibial and talar components. Methods: All patients who underwent primary total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) with INBONE-II between July 2010 and July 2014 at a single institution and who were at least 5 years postoperative were included. A total of 15 ankles with a mean follow-up of 85 months (range, 61-113 months) met the criteria. Radiographs were assessed using coronal and sagittal alignment parameters preoperatively, at 6 weeks postoperatively, and at the most recent follow-up. Medical records were reviewed and revisions, reoperations, and complications were classified according to the criteria established by Vander Griend et al and Glazebrook et al, respectively. Results: The survivorship of the prosthesis at a mean of 85 months was 93.7%. The coronal and sagittal tibiotalar alignments 6 weeks after surgery were 2.1 degrees ( P = .081) and 36% ( P = .15), respectively. Maintenance of this alignment was observed during the latest follow-up ( P = .684 and P = .837, respectively). One ankle (6.7%) required early component revision, while 4 (26.7%) required a non–implant-related revision. Six complications (2 high grade, 1 intermediate, and 3 low) in 5 ankles (33.3%) were recorded according to the Glazebrook classification system. Conclusion: The present study is the first to report midterm follow-up after TAA with this third-generation, 2-component prothesis. High survivorship, maintenance of correction, and a low incidence of major complications were observed in this small case series. The most common complication overall was lateral gutter impingement, which accounted for the majority of the nonrevisional reoperations. Level of Evidence: Level IV, case series.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to find common ground between the theory of crime prevention by means of architecture and environment design and between the theory of sustainable development. The importance of creating a visually and environmentally friendly urban environment is shown as a means of involving people in the urban infrastructure, and, consequently, increasing the safety level.Methodology/approach: The interdisciplinary approach based on knowledge of urban studies, architecture, town planning, criminology and sociology. The analysis of safety of the urban environment and foreign experience. Exploration of approaches and techniques for creating a safe urban environment based on foreign experience. Modern methods include architectural means, planning and environmental design: lighting, gardening, anti-vandal measures, safe building construction.Research findings: The urban development indicates criminogenic and a relatively safe areas. The use of eco-friendly materials and architectural means is aimed at energy conservation and their positive impact on the urban environment as a whole. The identified aspects of the public safety, sustainable development, ecology and architecture include use of local natural materials or composites that can accumulate energy or respond to environmental changes; vandal-resistant materials; landscaping not only as a decoration, but also as a defense against criminal encroachments and en- vironmental improvement; more intensive planting in the urban structure to improve the environment.Practical implications: Multi-storey apartments are more typical for large Russian cities like in South Korea. Due to their high density, such areas do not experience problems with accessibility and developed infrastructure, but control and security are more important. The reconstruction of existing or creation of new objects (building, park or area) consists of the following algorithm: collection of information about the site, analysis of analogs, the implementation of the selected principles, selection of appropriate tools and materials, and postproject research for quality assessment. The discussed examples can help in the building design and reconstruction. The proposed algorithm for assessing the safety of the urban environment can be introduced into the design process.Originality/value: The value of research lies in the comparison of different concepts of safe built environment. A study of the foreign experience in the urban places and living environment. The paper makes an attempt to draw analogies between different types of multi-storey urban development and identifies the greatest criminality of this or that type of development. The paper provides an overview of the latest studies of the urban environment. For the first time, an attempt is made to adapt the principles of decriminalization to the specific features of the Russian cities. The paper suggests the reconstruction algorithm for the urban areas, taking into account the requirements of criminogenic safety, and proposes the principles of decriminalization.

Abstract:
Since capitalism-patriarchy is viewed as the specter of the problem of the emergence of injustice, it has been raising efforts to realize social justice and environmental sustainability through restructuring of the human mindset towards nature and fellow humans. The principle of capitalism-patriarchy has led to a culture of death and destruction because it is characterized by domination, power, exploitation, and environmental damage. This research sought to describe the criticism of patriarchal-capitalism and the subsistence perspective shown in the novel Aroma Karsa written by Dewi Lestari. Through ecofeminism proposed by Vandana Shiva and Mies, this study found that the power of the capitalist-patriarchal was represented through male figures such as; Jati Wesi, Khalil, and Ferdi, who utilize nature and parts of women's bodies for financial interests and sexual desires through the production of the most expensive perfume, make certain plant species endangered and oppressed. Their cultivation efforts cannot be separated from profit orientation. The perspective of subsistence is then carried out by women characters to preserve, protect, and utilize natural resources as needed out of exaggeration. It is illustrated through female figures; Janirah, Raras, and Tanaya Suma who tried to stem the power and domination of men over nature and women's bodies for the benefit of capital. The subsistence perspective in the novel Aroma Karsa by Dewi Lestari emphasizes the preservation and protection of nature for the sake of mutual needs and comfort, and it is women who understand more about nature more than men.

Abstract:
Uncontrolled dumping of palm oil fuel ash (POFA) not only occupies valuable land but also creates environmental pollution and health hazard. These problems can be reduced to a large extent by using POFA in concrete. A number of research works have been carried out to investigate the potential of POFA for use as a supplementary cementing material in normal, high strength, high performance, and aerated concretes. This paper presents a review on the use of POFA in different types of concrete. It firstly discusses the physical and chemical properties of POFA. Then the emphasis has been given on the effects of POFA on the fresh and hardened properties, and durability of concrete. This paper shows that both ground and unground POFA increase the water demand and thus decrease the workability of concrete. However, ground POFA has shown a good potential for improving the hardened properties and durability of concrete due to its satisfactory micro-filling ability and pozzolanic activity. In addition to discussing the benefits of POFA, this study has identified certain gaps in the present state of knowledge on POFA concrete, and listed several research needs for future investigation. The findings of this study would encourage the use of POFA as a supplementary cementing material for concrete. Be to, aptarta POFA nauda, nustatytos tam tikros šiuo metu turimų žinių apie POFA betoną spragos ir išvardyta daugelis tyrimų, kurie turėtų būti atlikti ateityje. Šio darbo išvados turėtųpaskatinti naudoti POFA kaip papildomą rišamąją betono medžiagą.

Abstract:
Abstract The IL-1 superfamily member IL-33 is produced in barrier tissues. IL-33 binds to the receptor suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2), expressed on stromal cells, regulatory T cells (Tregs), myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), and macrophages. IL-33 has both anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory properties. It is not known if IL-33 plays a role in acute GvHD, and if so what properties it exerts. By immunohistochemistry staining of gut tissues, IL-33 production by non-hematopoietic cells was increased in mice post-conditioning and in patients during GvHD. To determine whether IL-33 could augment GvHD via a host signaling mechanism, we compared st2-/-to wildtype (wt) hosts and observed decreased GvHD lethality (Figure 1A). Additionally, IL-33-/- versus wt hosts had a marked decrease in GvHD lethality and reduced TNFα production. Conversely, IL-33 administration during the peak inflammatory response worsened GvHD. Previous studies have shown increased levels of the soluble form of ST2 (sST2) are a biomarker for steroid-refractory GvHD (Vander Lugt, NEJM, 2013). We hypothesized that sST2 acted not only as an indicator of tissue injury and biomarker of GvHD but also as an immune modulator during GvHD. In rodents, we found that ST2 was upregulated on alloreactive T cells and sST2 increased as GvHD progressed. St2-/-versus wt donor T cells had a marked reduction in GvHD lethality (Figure 1B) without compromise of graft-vs-leukemia responses. Comparable data was seen in 2 different strain combinations. Alloantigen-induced IL-18 receptor upregulation was significantly lower in the absence of ST2, which was linked to significantly reduced IFNγ production by st2-/- vs wt CD4 and CD8 T cells during GvHD. Similarly, sST2 transgenic hosts and wt recipients given exogenous sST2-Fc fusion protein infusions (Figure 1C) to block ST2/IL-33 interaction each had significantly reduced GVHD lethality, establishing the functional role of ST2 as a decoy receptor modulating GVHD. During the peak of the GvHD inflammatory response, IL-33 signalling of either donor or host cells promoted activation of donor T cells, while the use of exogenous sST2-Fc protein to prevent IL33/ST2 engagement ameliorates disease. Together, these studies point to targeting of the IL-33/ST2 axis as a novel and potent target for GvHD therapy. Disclosures Warncke: Novartis Pharma AG: Employment. Abstract:
Volatile organic compounds, e. g. acetone, have a direct impact on climate change, decrease of ozone in the air, and on the growth of greenhouse effect. One of the most popular air purifying methods from VOC is a biological air cleaning. Experimental investigations were conducted to determine the efficiency of the new structure of biofilter with polypropylene plates segments. During the investigations the efficiency of segmental construction biofilter of air purification at different initial concentrations of pollutants was determined. Different concentrations of pollutants were estimated during the acetone dilution with water. During the tests the efficiency of biofilter air purification from acetone vapor and its change under different concentrations of vapors was set. Based on test results, the maximum efficiency of biofilter air purification was up to 93%. Studies have shown that increasing the allowable pollutant concentration, the efficiency of air purification unit decreases. Increasing the concentration of supplied acetone vapor into the biofilter from 232 to 701 mg/m3, cleaning efficiency decreased from 92.8 to 82.3%. Since microorganisms fail to oxidize organic compounds, the filter works better at lower initial concentrations of pollutants.

Abstract:
Abstract Treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) has changed little over the last several decades and prognosis remains very poor. Allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is one potentially curative option for relapsed or high-risk AML. The immunotherapeutic activity of allo-HCT is known as the graft-vs-leukemia (GVL) activity. However, GVL activity is often accompanied by T-cell reactivity to allo-antigens in normal host tissues, which leads to graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), another major cause of death after HCT with relapse. Therefore, there is a great unmet need to improve the current process of allo-HCT through increasing the GVL activity and decreasing GVHD. We have shown that an elevated plasma level of soluble (s)ST2 in HCT patients is a risk factor for severe GVHD (Vander Lugt et al, N Engl J Med, 2013) and that ST2 blockade reduces sST2-producing T cells while maintaining protective membrane (m)ST2-expressing T cells during GVHD (Zhang et al, Sci Transl Med, 2015). In addition, the interleukin (IL)-9-producing CD4 T helper (Th)9 and CD8 cytotoxic T (Tc)9 cell subsets (together T9 cells) have higher antitumor activity than Th1 and Tc1 cells in melanoma models (Lu et al, J Clin Invest, 2012 and Lu et al, ProcNatl Acad Sci, 2014). We hypothesized that activation of the ST2/IL-33 pathway in T9 cells will both alleviate GVHD and increase GVL. In our laboratory, we have shown that T9 cells express a high level of mST2 and that differentiation of total T cells into T9 cells in the presence of IL-33 (T9IL-33 cells) increases expression of mST2 (Figure 1A) and PU.1 (Figure 1B), a transcription factor that promotes IL-9 production on both CD4 and CD8 T cells. Adoptive transfer of T9IL-33 cells with bone marrow cells in a murine model of HCT resulted in less severe GVHD compared to transfer of T9IL33 cells generated from ST2-/- or IL-9-/- T cells (Figure 1C). Ex-vivo analysis of target organs such as gut showed a decrease in T9IL-33 interferon (IFN)g-producing T cells that was abolished in mice receiving T9IL-33 cells derived from ST2-/- or IL-9-/- T cells (not shown). Furthermore, T9IL-33 cells revealed higher anti-leukemic activity in vitro when cultured with a B cell lymphoma line (A20) or retrovirally transduced MLL-AF9 leukemic cells in cytolytic assays (not shown). In vivo GVL experiments with MLL-AF9 induced leukemia, and adoptive transfer of T9IL-33 cells resulted in increased survival compared to transfer of T9IL-33 cells generated from ST2-/- or IL-9-/- T cells (Figure 1D). Human T9 cells are poorly explored. We demonstrated that differentiation of human T9 cells in the presence of IL-33 enhanced IL-9 production by CD4 and CD8 T cells (Figure 2A). T9IL-33 cells also upregulated the expression of the cytolytic molecules granzymes A and B compared to T9 cells (Th9IL-33: 33.6%±4%, vs. Th9: 15.69%±2.53% p=0.021), (Tc9IL-33: 57.6%±4.7%, vs. Tc9: 34.61%±3.4% p=0.018), as well as demonstrated higher in vitro anti- leukemic cytolytic activity when incubated with MOLM14, an aggressive AML tumor cell line expressing FLT3/ITD mutations (Figure 2B). Transcriptome analysis of T9IL-33 cells from wild-type and ST2-/- T cells showed upregulation of molecules implicated in anti-leukemic activity (granzymes A and B, CD8α, IL-15, IL-15rα, IFNα, and IL-1α) on both CD4 and CD8 T cells (Figure 2C), and such upregulation was confirmed at the protein level (Figure 2D). Furthermore, investigations into the possible mechanism of activation using transwell assays revealed that both soluble factors and cell contact between Th9IL-33 and Tc9IL-33 T cells were required for maximum killing (not shown). We next investigated the possible mechanism of action and hypothesized that CD8α might be the contact-dependent component. CD8α blockade with neutralizing antibody during human T9IL-33 differentiation reduced the cytotoxicity of both murine T9IL-33 and human T9IL-33 cells (Figure 2E). Altogether, our observations suggest that adoptive transfer of T9IL-33 cells represents a promising cellular therapy following HCT. Figure 1. Figure 1. Figure 2. Figure 2. Abstract:
Introduction. The article examines the role of youth culture (in particular, counterculture and subculture) in reformatting the modern sociocultural space. As long ago asin the 1970s. the researchers pointed out that young people, showing their active position, change the realities of the socio-cultural space in which their parents lived. The research is based on the materials of the graffiti and street art subculture, as an informal artistic practice. The graffiti subculture emerged among African American teenagers in the 1970s in New York City. The first label that this subculture has been endowed with by society and city authorities is vandalism. However, in the late 1970s early 1980s graffiti is involved in the sphere of the art world institutions activities (private galleries) and becomes in demand among collectors. Street art emerges under its influence. The aim of the study is to reveal due to what characteristics of the socio-cultural space the transition from deviation (vandal practice) to the asserting norm became possible. Methods. The methodological basis of the research is the theory of generations by K. Mannheim and his concept of «fresh contact», which indicates the rethinking of the previously assimilated sociocultural experience by the subjects of culture. Another methodological basis is the concept of rhizome, introduced into scientific circulation by the philosophers J. Deleuze and F. Guattari. Scientific novelty of the research. It is shown how the rhizomatic principle of organizing culture is realized during the transition of youth practice from the space of deviant, in accordance with social norms, actions into the institutionalized space of the art world. Results. Using the example of the metamorphosis that the youth subculture of graffiti underwent in the late 20th — early 21st centuries, the author shows how the boundaries between norm and deviation are shifting in modern society. Conclusions. The rhizom principle, clearly manifested in the organization of the space of postmodern culture, allows graffiti and street art to make the above transition. The fall of the great narrative in the art world leads to the loosening of hierarchies and creates an opportunity for the integration of once marginal phenomena into the space of official art. K. Mannheim’s concept of «fresh contact» is effective in the study of postmodern culture.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction aHUS is a rare, genetic, life-threatening disease of uncontrolled and chronic complement activation, leading to systemic TMA and severe end-organ damage. Despite plasma exchange/plasma infusion (PE/PI), up to 65% of all pts sustain permanent renal damage, progress to end-stage renal disease, or die within a year of diagnosis. Ecu, a terminal complement inhibitor, is approved for the treatment of aHUS, and was shown to be safe and effective in pediatric pts in a retrospective study. Previous studies have shown that early intervention with Ecu leads to significant, time-dependent improvements in hematologic and renal outcomes. Here, we report safety and efficacy results from the first prospective trial of pediatric pts with aHUS at 26 weeks (wks). Methods This was an open-label, single-arm, Phase 2 trial of Ecu in pediatric pts with aHUS. Admission criteria included platelet count < the lower limit of normal (LLN) at screening and at baseline (BL), LDH ≥1.5 times the upper limit of normal (ULN) at the start of the current aHUS manifestation, and elevated serum creatinine (Cr) at screening. An identified complement gene mutation was not required. Pts with STEC-HUS (shiga toxin + E. coli) or severe ADAMTS13 deficiency (<5%) were excluded. The primary endpoint was complete TMA response at 26 wks (normalization of platelets and LDH, and ≥25% improvement in Cr from BL on 2 consecutive measurements ≥4 wks apart). Dosing was based on weight cohorts. Results 22 pts (1 month to 17 yrs) were enrolled and 19 completed 26 wks. 16 pts (73%) were newly diagnosed, with a median of 6 days from diagnosis to the first dose of ECU. 12 pts (55%) had no PE/PI during the current manifestation. At wk 26, 14 pts (64%) achieved the primary endpoint of complete TMA response (Table). Platelets (Fig 1) and eGFR (Fig 2) increased significantly from BL through the 26-wk study period. 9 of 11 pts (82%) on dialysis at BL discontinued dialysis. 100% of the 11 pts not on dialysis at BL remained off dialysis through wk 26. Mean increase in eGFR through wk 26 was 64 mL/min/1.73m2. All 10 pts on PE/PI at BL discontinued PE/PI. QoL significantly improved. Ecu was safe and well tolerated. 1 pt withdrew due to an SAE (agitation). No pts had meningococcal infection or died. Conclusions In this, the first prospective trial of pediatric pts with aHUS, early intervention with Ecu improved hematologic and renal parameters. 82% of pts discontinued dialysis, and no pt initiated dialysis during the 26-wk study. Use of Ecu has been recommended as first-line therapy in children with aHUS. This trial confirms that Ecu inhibits complement-mediated TMA, and is safe and effective as first-line therapy at the approved dose regimen in pediatric pts with aHUS. Abstract:
Except in small measure, environmental education in the United States has not yet challenged the status quo of Western notions of progress or monoculturalism, or recognized that moving through the environmental crisis may require significant shifts in generally unquestioned cultural attitudes and beliefs. In the U.S., environmental education has instead tended to focus on information regarding environmental problems and to explore topics such as endangered species, global climate change, or the water quality of local streams and rivers. Even this has become a source of controversy in the United States since the mid-1990s as a coalition of right-wing organizations has mounted a well-coordinated political campaign charging environmental educators with bias and a failure to present both sides of controversial issues (Sanera & Shaw 1996, Independent Commission on Environmental Education 1997). Despite this, we believe that if environmental education is to live up to its promise as a vehicle for developing a citizenry capable of making wise decisions about the impact of human activities on the environment, examining and altering fundamental cultural beliefs and practices that are contributing to the degradation of the planet's natural systems will be imperative. We have chosen to call this extended form of environmental education ecological education. For us, ecological education connotes an emphasis on the inescapable embeddedness of human beings in natural settings and the responsibilities that arise from this relationship. Rather than seeing nature as other—a set of phenomena capable of being manipulated like parts of a machine—the practice of ecological education requires viewing human beings as one part of the natural world and human cultures as an outgrowth of interactions between our species and particular places. We believe that the development of sustainable cultures will in fact require widespread acceptance of a relationship between humans and the earth grounded in moral sentiments that arise from the willingness to care. As Indian physicist and ecofeminist Vandana Shiva writes, the term ‘sustainability’ implies the ability and willingness ‘to support, bear weight of, hold up, enable to last out, give strength to, endure without giving way’ (Shiva 1992, p. 191).

Abstract:
Abstract Background Cord blood transplantation (CBT) is a proven therapy for high-risk hematologic malignancies. However, severe grade III-IV acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) has emerged as a significant source of morbidity and mortality and most commonly targets the gastrointestinal (GI) tract after CBT. Plasma biomarkers have been found to predict aGVHD onset, aGVHD therapy response, and transplant-related mortality (TRM) after adult donor hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. However, whether plasma biomarkers are informative in CBT recipients has not been investigated. Methods Plasma biomarkers were measured 28 days after unrelated donor double-unit CBT in 113 consenting patients (median age 41 years, range 1.7-69) transplanted at a single center between 5/2006 and 5/2012 for the treatment of high-risk hematologic malignancies. Conditioning was myeloablative (n = 37), reduced intensity (n = 47), or non-myeloablative (n = 29), and CB units were 4-6/6 HLA-A, -B antigen, -DRB1 allele matched to the recipient. The median follow-up was 44 months (range 14-84). Batched samples blinded to transplant outcomes were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for levels of suppressor of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2), IL-2 receptor-α (IL-2Rα), tumor necrosis factor receptor-1 (TNFR1), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF), IL-8, elafin, and regenerating islet-derived protein 3-α (REG3α). Patients were grouped according to being above or below the median day 28 value for each biomarker. The cumulative incidence of aGVHD and TRM from day 28 landmark was estimated for each biomarker and significance was assessed using Gray's test. Patients who had aGVHD onset prior to day 28 (n = 7) were excluded from aGVHD evaluation. Results We found significant associations between day 28 plasma biomarkers and grade II-IV aGVHD and/or 6-month TRM, which are shown in Table. IL2Rα, elafin, and HGF were not significant for either outcome (data not shown). ST2 was the only biomarker associated with day 100 grade II-IV aGVHD with high ST2 patients having a median aGVHD onset of 42 days (range 28-93). Notably, patients with high day 28 ST2 had significantly increased day 100 grade III-IV aGVHD of 27% (95%CI:16-40) versus 11% (95%CI:4-20) in patients with low ST2 levels, p = 0.025. High ST2 was also associated with substantially increased 6-month TRM, and GVHD was the most common cause of transplant-related death [11/19 (58%) of deaths] with a median time to GVHD death of 170 days (range 70-400). High concentrations of TNFR1, IL-8, and REG3a were also significantly associated with 6-month TRM. Notably, aGVHD and organ failure due to lung toxicity were the most common causes of TRM in patients with high TNFR1, IL8, and REG3α levels. Conclusions This is the first biomarker analysis conducted in CBT recipients. We demonstrate that a high day 28 ST2 level is associated with a subsequent increased risk of grade II-IV and III-IV aGVHD, as well as 6-month TRM. These findings are consistent with those recently reported in adult unmodified (T-replete) allograft recipients (Vander Lugt et al, NEJM, 2013). GVHD is the predominant mechanism of death in high ST2 patients and the day of onset is after day 28 in the majority which would permit time for therapeutic intervention. Thus, our findings have significant practical implications. Whether the other biomarkers offer additional prognostic information remains to be determined. They were not associated with the overall grade II-IV aGVHD incidence, but where associated with mortality from GVHD and organ failure. Overall, our promising results warrant further prospective evaluation in a large patient cohort with the ultimate aim of future interventions to ameliorate severe aGVHD and improve survival after CBT. THROUGH IRRIGATION WATER 2 ABSTRACT This study objective was to study the influence of different rates of CO2 application, by irrigation water, by dripping it with the use of poritex bands, on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) cultivation and production. The experiment was carried out from March to May, 2004, in Cascavel-PR. The experiment was conducted in plastic tunnels and ina random experimental design with four treatments and five replications in order to test predetermined CO2 rates on lettuce, Vera cultivar. The CO2 rates were 0, 1, 3 and 6 L min-1. The irrigation was daily at 10 o’clock during 10 minutes, 10 days after the plants transplantation, until 01 day before the final harvest, adding up to 215 mm of the water per portion. The results have shown that the 1 and 3 L min-1 CO2 rates, applied by water, caused increase in production, obtaining 26.52% and 14.47% values, when compared to the control plant. The economical analysis indicated the viability of CO2 application via irrigation water.KEYWORDS: drip irrigation; carbon dioxide; lettuce; rates

Abstract:
Abstract A common characteristic among nearly all cancers, including leukemia, is the cell’s metabolic proclivity for glycolysis over the more energy efficient process of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in the presence of oxygen. This altered state of aerobic glycolysis was observed in tumor cells by Otto Warburg over fifty years ago (Warburg, 1956) and continues to be intensely investigated in hopes of ultimately exploiting this “Warburg effect” in the treatment of cancer (Vander Heiden et al. 2009). Recent studies have revealed that the M2 isoform of the enzyme pyruvate kinase (PKM2) plays a critical role in the maintenance of aerobic glycolysis in tumor cells and is important for their growth and development (Christofk et al. 2008). Pyruvate kinase produces pyruvate and one molecule of adenosine 5’-triphosphate (ATP) in the rate-limiting step of glycolysis. Pyruvate kinase coded for by PKM has two splice isoforms, the constitutively active PKM1 that exists only as a tetramer and PKM2 that can shift between a more active tetramer and less active dimers or monomers. The dynamic enzymatic activity of PKM2 is key to its preferential expression in tumor cells. By utilizing the less active form of PKM2, tumor cells can limit the levels of pyruvate available for OXPHOS and instead shunt glycolytic carbons towards anabolic processes. However, recent studies have revealed novel activities of PKM2 outside the realm of energy metabolism that also contribute to tumor formation, maintenance, and growth. The less active PKM2 dimer, whose structure is favored upon phosphorylation at Tyr105 (Hitosugi et al. 2009), can also translocate to the nucleus and act as a transcription factor for cell cycle associated genes like MYC and CCND1 upon stimulation with epidermal growth factor in certain cancer cell lines (Gao et al. 2012). Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a malignancy of hematopoietic progenitor cells characterized by the extraordinarily rapid growth of abnormal myeloid cells, making the proliferative influences of PKM2 an intriguing target for therapy. We have found that PKM2 is abundantly expressed in AML cell lines and primary AML patient samples and that low basal levels of PKM2 can be detected in their nuclei. Interestingly, stimulation with various cytokines such as IL-6 or GM-CSF can induce the nuclear translocation of PKM2 and association with histone H3 in these cells and concomitant treatment with PKM2 activating compounds that have been shown to promote its tetrameric structure and suppress tumor growth (Anastasiou et al. 2012) can inhibit this effect. These data show that the role of PKM2 in regulating transcription in addition to its metabolic activity may be important for the proliferation and maintenance of hematopoietic malignancies. Using fluorescence-activated cell sorting to isolate specific sub-populations of primary AML patient cells and elucidating PKM2’s interaction with protein kinases involved in known signaling pathways like JAK/STAT, ERK1/2, and FLT3, we show that the proliferative influences of PKM2 function and activity differ between AML cell phenotypes. For example, cells from AML patient samples sorted based on high or low levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) differ in relative phosphorylation of PKM2 at Tyr105. These data, along with reports that the PKM2 dimer specifically plays a role in tumor cell antioxidant response (Anastasiou, et al. 2011) suggests that PKM2 may contribute to the maintenance of phenotypically ROS-low leukemia stem cells that are thought to contribute to patient relapse after achieving remission (Hope et al. 2004). Our data suggests that the broad cellular functions of PKM2 employed by AML cells and its direct influence on tumor growth and survival make it a promising potential target for therapy. Abstract:
Abstract Maximum grades of the commonly used modified Glucksberg staging system for acute graft versus host disease (GVHD) correlate with non-relapse mortality (NRM), but cannot guide treatment at diagnosis. All patients with GVHD grade II-IV are standardly treated with high dose steroids, and no further treatment decisions are based on GVHD severity at onset. In contrast, treatment for GVHD grade I varies so that some patients receive systemic steroid therapy while others are observed. We wished to devise a grading system that predicted eventual mortality and that could therefore guide treatment at diagnosis. We have previously shown that plasma concentrations of GVHD biomarkers (TNFR1, IL2Rα, elafin, REG3α, ST2) have prognostic significance (Paczesny, Blood, 2009, Paczesny, Sci Trans Med, 2010, Ferrara Blood, 2011, Vander Lugt, NEJM, 2013). We identified 360 University of Michigan allogeneic hematopoietic cell recipients with acute GVHD (median age 48y, range 0-70y) who had plasma samples taken at the time of diagnosis [median day 28, range: 5-174] and stored in our repository: grade I (n =130, 36%), grade II (n = 151, 42%), or grade III/IV (n = 79, 22%). Biopsy confirmation was available for >80% of cases. Progression from Glucksberg I to Glucksberg ≥ II occurred in 84 (64%) patients at a median of 6 days from onset, whether systemic therapy for grade I was initiated (N=80; 70%) or not (N=50; 56%, p=0.12). We chose 6 month NRM as the key endpoint as it encompasses treatment failures due to nonresponse, loss of treatment response, and complications of treatment; 93% of 6 m NRM was due to GVHD. The 6 m NRM for patients presenting with Glucksberg I (15%) and Glucksberg II (24%) was not significantly different [as also shown by others: MacMillan, Blood, 2010]; their combined NRM was 20% (n=281, Panel A). Patients who presented with Glucksberg III/IV had significantly worse 6 m NRM than Glucksberg I/II (56%, N=79, p<0.001, Panel C). We measured the plasma concentrations of the 5 prognostic biomarkers above and used logistic regression to develop Ann Arbor GVHD grades such that 6 m NRM for Ann Arbor I would be ∼10% (as in patients with Glucksberg I whose GVHD never progressed) and >50% for Ann Arbor III (similar to the 6 m NRM for Glucksberg III/IV). We treated relapse after development of GVHD as a competing risk and developed separate regression models according to the clinical severity at presentation, i.e. Glucksberg I/II and III/IV. Panel B shows the 6 m NRM of patients who presented with Glucksberg I/II according to Ann Arbor I (thin), II (medium), and III (thick). Patients with Ann Arbor III (n=29/281, 10%) experienced far worse 6 m NRM (59%) than either Ann Arbor I (11%) or Ann Arbor II (17%) [p<0.001 for each]. Likewise, Panel D shows that biomarkers reclassify significant numbers of patients with Glucksberg III/IV at onset to Ann Arbor I and II (n=21/79, 27%). These reclassified patients experienced much lower NRM (0% and 21%, respectively) than patients with Ann Arbor III (71%, p<0.001). Results are summarized in Panels E (combined Glucksberg NRM) and F (combined Ann Arbor NRM). NRM for Ann Arbor grade III remained significantly worse compared to Ann Arbor grade I and II (p<0.001 for both comparisons). Of note, the difference between Ann Arbor grade I and II (10% vs 18%, p=0.08) approaches statistical significance. Comparison of the models by the Akaike Information Criterion indicated that Ann Arbor grades predict NRM better than Glucksberg grades. Patients with Ann Arbor grade III GVHD experienced worse NRM (67%) than those with Glucksberg III/IV (56%), while patients with Ann Arbor grade I (10%) have better NRM than those with Glucksberg I/II (20%). As expected, patients with Ann Arbor grade I were most likely to respond to treatment by day 28 and those with Ann Arbor III GVHD were least likely (p=0.01 and p=0.03, respectively). In conclusion, we have developed a new acute GVHD grading system using biomarkers at onset of disease that reclassifies significant numbers of patients and produces more accurate risk groups than Glucksberg grades. If validated in patients from other centers, this system may be able to guide therapy: patients with Ann Arbor Grade III who experience high rates of treatment failure with standard approaches would benefit from experimental therapies as primary treatment. Likewise, patients with Ann Arbor grade I might require low dose/no systemic steroids. Abstract:
Abstract Introduction: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a progressive, life-threatening disease of uncontrolled and chronic complement activation, leading to systemic thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) and severe end-organ damage. Prior to an effective pharmacologic treatment, and despite intensive management with plasma exchange/plasma infusion, up to 25% of children died during the initial presentation, and up to 48% reached end-stage renal disease or died 5 years after disease onset. In a prospective study of children and adolescents with aHUS, eculizumab (ECU), a terminal complement inhibitor, was shown to inhibit TMA and improve hematologic outcomes and renal function by 26 weeks. Here, we report 1-year data from this prospective trial. Methods: This was an open-label, single-arm, Phase 2 trial of ECU in pediatric patients (pts) with aHUS. Inclusion criteria included platelet count less than the lower limit of normal (LLN) at screening and at baseline (BL), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) ≥1.5 times the upper limit of normal (ULN) at the start of the current manifestation, and elevated serum creatinine (SCr) at screening. An identified complement abnormality was not required. Pts with STEC-HUS (Shiga toxin + E. coli) or severe ADAMTS13 deficiency (<5%) were excluded. The primary endpoint was the proportion of pts who achieved complete TMA response, defined as hematologic normalization (platelet count ≥150x109/L; LDH ≤ULN), and improvement of renal function (≥25% decrease in SCr from BL, confirmed by ≥2 consecutive measurements obtained ≥4 weeks apart). Dosing was based on weight cohorts, and the regimen was designed with investigators and regulatory agencies to ensure that ≥95% of pts had complete and sustained terminal complement inhibition (defined as >80% inhibition in a hemolytic assay), including in times of increased complement activity (eg, infection or surgery). Results: 22 pts (aged 1 month to 17 years) were enrolled and 19 completed 26 weeks of treatment. The median time from the current manifestation to enrollment was 0.20 months (range, 0.03–4.26). At the 1-year update, the mean (SD) treatment duration was 12.5 (6.38) months, with a median (range) of 12.6 (0.0–24.5) months. At week 26, 14 pts (64%) achieved the primary endpoint of complete TMA response (Table), and that number increased to 15 (68%) at 1 year. Platelet levels (Fig 1) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) (Fig 2) increased significantly from BL through the 26-week study period, and those gains were maintained or further improved at 1 year. Nine of 11 pts (82%) on dialysis at BL discontinued dialysis, and all remained dialysis-free at 1 year. 11 pts not on dialysis at BL also remained dialysis-free at 1 year. Quality of life significantly improved. ECU was well tolerated and there were no meningococcal infections or deaths. Conclusions: Longer-term analysis at 1 year further demonstrates the safety and efficacy of ongoing ECU therapy in pediatric aHUS pts. It is interesting to note that renal function, as represented by eGFR, further increased between weeks 26 and 1 year: this highlights the need to pursue ECU treatment over the long term. These findings show that treatment with ECU results in life-altering outcomes, in stark contrast to the natural history of the disease. Figure 1 Figure 1. Figure 2 Figure 2. Figure 3 Figure 3. Abstract:
Background: The main proteases (Mpro) and Spike Proteins (SP) of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) play a major role in viral infection development by producing several non-structural proteins (nsPs) and penetrating the host cells respectively. In this study, the potential of in silico molecular docking-based drug repositioning approach was exploited for identifying the inhibitors of Mpro and SP of SARS-CoV-2. Methods: A total of 196 compounds including various US-FDA-approved drugs, vitamins and their analogs were docked with Mpro (PDB IDs: 6YB7 and 6Y84), and the top six ligands were further tested for ADME properties followed by docking with SP (PDB IDs: 6LXT and 6W41). Results: Out of 196 compounds, binding energy (DE) of Silybin B (6YB7: DE: -11.20 kcal/mol; 6Y84: DE: -10.18 kcal/mol; 6LXT:DE: -10.47 kcal/mol; 6W41:DE: -10.96 kcal/mol) and Cianidanol (6YB7:DE: -8.85 kcal/mol; 6Y84:DE:-10.02 kcal/mol; 6LXT:DE:-9.36 kcal/mol; 6W41:DE: -9.52 kcal/mol) demonstrated better binding and ADME properties compared with the currently endeavored drugs like Hydroxychloroquine and Lopinavir. Additionally, Elliptinone, Diospyirin, SCHEMBL94263 and Fiboflavin have shown encouraging results. Fiboflavin, an immunity booster, was found to inhibit both the Mpro and spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. It was observed that amino acid residues MET6, ALA7, PHE8, PRO9, ASP295, GLY302, VAL303 and THR304 play significant roles in protein-ligand interactions through hydrogen bonds and Vander Waals forces. Conclusion: Silybin B and Cianidanol showed excellent binding and ADME properties compared with the currently endeavored drugs and can be exploited as therapeutic options against SARS-CoV-2 infection after experimental validation and clinical trials.

From 1994, the Afrikaner community members experience an ambiguous relationship with their cultural attributes, used as alibi by the Christian‑nationalist government to justify racial supremacy under apartheid time. Today, these characteristics are seen as deviant and lived as social stigmas. Some Afrikaners vividly criticize their past and try to recreate new patriotic frames which fit today liberal and democratic values, as shown in this article. Abstract:
The experiment was established in the Pomological Orchard of The National Institute of Horticultural Research in Skierniewice in a system of randomized blocks. The aim of the experiment was to investigate the impact of innovative organic fertilizers: BioIlsa, BioFeed Ecomix, biostimulator Ausma and mycorrhizal inoculum Mykoflor on the fine roots growth characteristics of ‘Vanda’ sweet cherry trees in comparison with NPK mineral fertilization. The experiment involved five combinations, in three repetitions of three trees each, treated with tested preparations. The study assessed the influence of fertilization on the lifespan of the roots, the depth of their formation, their diameter and survivorship using minirhizotron camera. The highest numbers of roots were found in the treatment where the plants were fertilized with NPK and the lowest following the use of the biofertilizer BioFeed Ecomix. The longest lifespan was shown by the roots of the trees treated with BioFeed Ecomix – 347 days, and the shortest – by those fertilized with the Ausma – 225 days. The lifespan of the roots increased with their diameter. The roots that lived the longest had a diameter in the range from 0.9 to 1.0 mm – 568 days, and the shortest-living were the roots with a diameter smaller than 0.3 mm – 238 days. The roots that formed in late autumn and winter had the shortest median lifespan of 159 days, while the roots formed in the spring where characterized by the longest lifespan of 300 days. The lifespan of the roots formed close to the soil surface was the shortest – 225 days, while that of the roots formed at a depth of 10 to 20 cm was the longest – 326 days. Biological origin, organic nitrogen rich fertilizers positively influence on fine roots lifespan and longevity. Mineral fertilization increases number of new formed roots.

Abstract:
This study is aimed to evaluate the yield performance of 12 varieties of upland rice and to assess the agronomic traits that contribute to yield performance of these varieties. A 2-year field experiment was conducted in the Teaching and Research Farm of the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The twelve varieties which made up the twelve treatments were laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) and replicated three times. The experimental site was loamy sand, medium acidic with the soil pH reduced in the second cropping season (pH 4.9 in 2012; and pH 4.8 in 2013). The varieties differed significantly amongst themselves in panicle weight, number of fertile spikelets, grain length/breath ratio, 1000 grain weight in 2012 and 2013 planting and grain yield in 2012 planting season. The ITA 321 had the highest yield of 10300.33 kg/ha in 2012 and 10533.33 kg/ha in 2013 followed by NERICA 1 having 9066.67 kg/ha (2012) and 9133.33 kg/ha (2013). The NERICA 2,3,4,5 and 6 also belonged to the high yielding group while APO, Vandana, IR68 and ITA 150 recorded lower yields. Results of this evaluation have shown that ITA 321 and NERICA 1 can be grown in the tropical rainforest zone for paddy grain yield rather than ITA 150 which are already in use in this agro-ecological zone. They are recommended also for adoption and use in rice production instead of the popular ITA 150.
