Abstract:
Albert Einstein is one indisputable luminary who in my opinion exemplifies the balance, brilliance, and altruism I look for in my heroes. Subsequent to his dream of riding a beam of light to the edge of the universe, with the tools of calculus and physics, he radically changed our understanding of the universe. But the dream came first, and everybody dreams.I believe everyone has something incredible to offer. In my creative project paintings I attempt to demonstrate with the tools of paint and canvas my peculiar dream of the cosmos from macrocosm to microcosm.I ride the beam of light using paint and canvas, in my creative project paintings I celebrate my fascination with that intuitive element we all share. I also celebrate those who have gone before with the wisdom to seek an understanding and discernment of the genius we all share, have access to, and indeed must thoughtfully and carefully awaken for our species to evolve past its current halting material, ideological, and technological adolescence.<br>Department of Art

Sharar, Zain. "A comparative analysis of the corporate governance legislative frameworks in Australia and Jordan measured against the OECD Principles of Corporate Governance 2004 as an international benchmark." ePublications@bond, 2006. http://epublications.bond.edu.au/theses/sharar.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent years, countries across the globe have come to realise the importance of an official corporate governance regime, which provides a platform for market integrity and efficiency, as well as facilitating economic growth. Formulating effective corporate governance measures is a complex task for legislators. The purpose of this paper is to provide an in depth analysis and comparison of the corporate governance legislative frameworks in Australia and Jordan. In 2004, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in conjunction with national and international governmental organisations, finalised a universal set of corporate governance principles. Although non-binding, the OECD Principles 2004 are a serious attempt to strengthen every aspect of corporate governance and, accordingly, have been utilised in this paper as an international benchmark. The ultimate objective of this paper is to formulate a number of detailed and specific recommendations to the Jordanian Government. Jordan’s legislative framework for corporations received a significant shake-up a decade ago when the Jordanian Government began the process of implementing a privatisation program under the guidance of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Despite a number of positive developments since this program was initiated, the Jordanian Government has continually failed to recognise the importance of promoting good corporate governance. There can be no doubt that the Jordanian companies’ legislation is in desperate need of reform. The vast majority of the provisions are ambiguous and lack the necessary detail to regulate the complex sphere of company law. In this writer’s opinion, the relevant authorities in Jordan must act immediately to bring the country’s legislative regime into line with internationally recognised standards and practices. Chapter 1 of the paper sets out an introductory explanation of corporate governance and corporate structure. Chapter 2 provides a brief account of the history of company law in Jordan and a description of the different types of company structures permitted under the relevant Jordanian legislation. Chapter 3 provides a detailed discussion of the corporate governance principles formulated by the OECD. The process began in 1999 and was completed in 2004 after extensive revision and consultation. Chapter 4, the core part of the paper, presents a comparative analysis of the implementation of the OECD principles in Australia and Jordan. Chapter 5 provides an explanation and analysis of two important shareholders’ remedies in the Australian companies’ legislation that do not exist in Jordan. Finally, Chapter 6 provides a summary of analysis and sets out a list of recommendations to the Jordanian Government.

This report is both a users guide and a programmers manual for running and modifying the program SHAMAT, an interactive matrix calculator. The program is written in Turbo Pascal version 3.0 for MS-DOS computers. This software enables the user to type in matrix equations for solving statistical problems such as multiple regression, analysis of variance, etc. All matrix operations necessary for linear models analysis are included in this program. Since each operation uses a separate subroutine, program enhancement, modification and updating is demonstrated to be easy.

It is one of the three rituals celebrated by jews on the day separated to rest e prays, where the songs and prays still can be heard on local synagogue. The search gathered informations from the Isaac Shachnick Synagogue, in the Centro Israelita de Pernambuco (CIP), and on the Synagogue Kahal Zur Israel Museum, the first synagogue of Brazil, where today is the Jewish Historian Archive of Pernambuco, where are preserved, ocasionally, the ceremonies of Shabat. Departing from the perspective of musical cultural study this work intend to understand the music as cultural behavior and verify the task of this religious practice to their fellowers, trying to situate the music in its sociocultural context. According to the local information, we have nearly 100 fellowers of the Shabat, what represent 10% of the jewish community in Recife. We not only registered the special repertorie sung on the local synagogues, but the study begins with the historic construction of the social group, going to the negociations of the permanencies e adaptation of the cultural traces, specially musical, until reach the reflection over the relevance of this religious tradition. After confirmed the close conection between shabatic music and the jewish identity, that helps to keep the ethical stability and the social union of the ethnical group, the work wants to contribute to the discussions about the ethnicity and the cultural behavior of Immigrant, reaching a more broad aspect, as the Social Science.<br>O tema transversal deste estudo de caso é o repertório musical do Cabalat Shabat transterritorializado para Recife.

Jones, Cherlyn Heather Tee. "Warrior/shaman| Creative praxis for conflict transformation." Thesis, Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3726313.

Abstract:
<p> The purpose of this artistic self-case study is to explore how the role of the soldier might be transformed from service <i>in war</i> to service <i>for community,</i> via creative exploration of the archetypal figures, Warrior and Shaman. With this in mind, a creative and introspective method was tested for its efficacy in generating new images and stories to promote conflict transformation for our warrior class. </p><p> The strategy of inquiry employed is based on the case study model, modified to be a self-case study. Creation-based data was generated by the researcher to evoke intersubjective dialogue between academically rational and creatively nonrational data and processes in this research. In lieu of the traditional written chapters that comprise the body of a dissertation, &ldquo;creative chapters&rdquo; in the form of mixed media pictorial representations are presented. Data analysis was conducted using Abt&rsquo;s (2005) articulation of Jungian picture interpretation, in order to discern meaning from each creative chapter&mdash;the titles of which served as a query for topics related to the research question. </p><p> A liberation paradigm was then utilized as a critical point of departure, to guide the issues examined (healing and community roles for our warrior class), the people for whom the study is relevant (the warrior class and practitioners working with them), the researcher&rsquo;s role in the study (up front/personal; grounded in experience), and how the research was presented in its final form (written text with supporting pictorial data; conclusions drawn from creative interpretation). </p><p> The combined chapter interpretations were reviewed and analyzed in the concluding chapter for their implications in community praxis with returning soldiers and veterans. They revealed consistent themes of imbalanced masculine and feminine energies, and the need for development of an introspective, Shamanic aptitude by our Warriors in order for them to continue their duty of protection and care of their local communities. </p><p> Recommendations are then made for adapting this research model in community work with soldiers and veterans, along with suggestions for building greater levels of reliability, validity, and generalizability into creative qualitative research. </p><p> Keywords: Warrior, Shaman, trauma, conflict transformation, resilient communities, Jungian, phronesis, counterinsurgency, initiation, creative.</p>

<p> This collection of poems explores the emergence of raw reality through a veil of existential questioning. The poems posit existential questions as logical alienation from material reality, and to brave mundane interactions, without a blanket of ideals, sharpens the edges of social interactions. The scope of these poems&rsquo; exploration resides in discovering a balance between illusory ideals and the sharp edges of reality.</p><p> Each piece&rsquo;s perspective focuses closely on raw events, but balances the potential violence of existence with poetics. The images avoid mediation of behavior by common courtesy. Instead they reimagine stark reality as beautiful in the way the improbable is beautiful.</p>

Full text
Abstract:

Sutiono, Agustinus. "The roles and significance of Wong Pinter, the Javanese Shaman." Thesis, York St John University College, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/6879/.

Full text
Abstract:
Exploring the phenomenon of the socio-religio-magico reality in Java called wong pinter which has not been academically examined before, this thesis argues that this social type is a definitely Javanese shaman whose existence has become a cultural system, thus demonstrating that their multidimensional roles reveal a web of significance. Throughout the course of investigation involving anthropological and ethnographical approaches, every discussion on the fundamental aspects of wong pinter is scrutinised within the context of existing study on shamanism. The outcome shows that there is connectivity between Javanese shamanism and Asian or Southeast Asian shamanism. Thus, shamanism is a valid instrument for a study on wong pinters and wong pinters are a valid object for scientific approach. This thesis therefore contributes to the richness of the study on shamanism, the anthropology of shamanism and religious studies since this topic is of interest for these disciplines. Simultaneously it lays claims to be a pioneering academic work on wong pinter, the Javanese shaman, based on first hand study. The roles and significance of wong pinters are a never-was reality for Javanese society because their relevance has embodied with people’s everyday preoccupation with maintaining and enhancing their lives to its maximum possibility. Despite the fact that they have to deal with various challenges, such relatedness to the needs of their community has been expanded to more established institutions and involvements with larger concerns. This has resulted in them engaging more in relationism than in individualism. The application of their knowledge and skill both to their local communities and spheres beyond responds to the spiritual call to partake in the kingly ideology to enhance the beauty of the world. This social type proves itself resilient yet it has to deal with suppression both from the current religious establishment and political authorities.

Full text
Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis examines the questions of (i) why the prevailing form of Islamic finance has tended to only textually comply with Sharia law while breaching principles underlying; and (ii) how Sharia governance could be standardised in order to ensure that Islamic finance reliably provides a genuinely Islamic alternative to conventional finance so as to engender market trust in the Islamic finance industry. The primary methodologies applied in this thesis are a text-based analysis and a qualitative interview study. A thorough text-based analysis of the religious and academic thinking around Islamic finance serves as a useful starting point for the design of the qualitative semi-structured interviews of a sample of 20 academics with experience of Islamic finance in practice across three culturally distinct jurisdictions (namely, the UK, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia). This paper finds that the existing models of Sharia governance across and within jurisdictions allow for a variety of interpretations, leading, in turn, to the inconsistent issuance of fatwas, thereby undermining the credibility of Islamic finance as genuinely compliant with Sharia principles. A lack of standardisation permits the coexistence of Sharia boards operating at different levels of Sharia supervision. This provides banks with the opportunity to seek to obtain a competitive financial advantage by utilising a less rigorous standard of Sharia governance. In order to counter the logics of neoliberal capitalism which result in banks ‘shopping around’ for favourable interpretations, this thesis concludes that Sharia governance should be part of an integrated and standardised system of Islamic corporate governance.

Abstract:
In Qing Dynasty, Chang’s family was one of the most famous merchants of the Shanxi ancient business. Chang’s Manor, which has a history of more than 200 years, stays as the most awarded civil building assembly among all the Shanxi compounds by its elaborate sculptures, wooden decorated archways, brick sculpted walls and many other art forms. Since 2001, Chang’s Manor has been commercialized for tourism purpose. Many “interesting stories” have been made up while lots of facts which are the real “people’s history” were left out and may be lost forever. This is also a common problem within many heritages which have been transformed into tourist attractions in China. And this arouses my research interests. In this dissertation, I would like to seek and tell the “true stories” from 1949 to 2001 in accordance with my conversation with the original habitants who have had real life experience of the original places. Surely, I will identify the real social value of Chang’s Manor through the interpretation of the true stories from local people.<br>published_or_final_version<br>Conservation<br>Master<br>Master of Science in Conservation

Shukri, Abdul Salam Muhammad. "The relationship between ilm and khabar in the work of al-Shafii." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/2927.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines in detail the basis of al-Shafi`i's arguments for the supremacy of oral tradition over communal legal practice. It concentrates on one broad issue, the definition of `ilm (knowledge) and one technical issue, the problem of authenticating a particular khabar (oral tradition or report, plural akhbar, ) and its binding nature, especially a report of the category known as the specialists' report (khabar al-khassa). On the first issue, this study examines the concept of knowledge based on reports (`ilm al-khabar) because it had an important influence on al-Shafi`i. This is followed by a detailed account of al-Shafi`i's own discussion of `ilm. It brings out clearly that al-Shafi`i means religious law when discussing `ilm. It also shows how knowledge of religious law can be obtained. Al-Shafi`i's approach is to restrict the argument to knowledge of specialised and debatable points, rather than what is generally accepted. He seeks to prove the indispensability in this area of specialists' knowledge of reliable documentation external to the law itself. The following chapter deals with the question of authenticating a khabar from the Prophet (a hadith), not as purely technical question but within a polemical context in which the practical difficulty of authenticating a khabar was used by those opposed to the intellectual dominance of oral tradition as a reason not to use the khabar. In the final chapter al- Shaf i's arguments with two identifiable schools of opposing thought, ahl al-kaläm and ahl al-figh, are examined in detail. The thesis as a whole gives a significant insight into the efficacy and durability of al-Shafi`i's arguments, not so much by defeating his opponents' arguments but by buttressing those of the defenders and advocates of oral tradition.

Santos, Marcel de Lima. "Jim Morrison: the articulation of the Shaman- Poet in the poetic tradition." Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/1843/BUBD-9D9HD2.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims at the articulation ofthe shaman-poet in the poetic tradition. It presents American poet Jim Morrison as the shaman artist whose life and poetry are analyzed as belonging to the tradition ofpoets Plato called possessed byfuror poeiicus. This tradition, which is to find its prime in the writings ofthe Romantic poets, states that poetry is a secret language, based on feeling and imagination, that speaks to the heart of men about the sacred and universal, i. e., natural, quality of the human soul. The shaman-poet, thus, belongs to a tradition that goes back thousands ofyears to a time when the primitive man used to be in touch with a magical understanding ofhis environment on a regular basis, in contrast to the extremely rational perception ofthe world by modem man. The poetry ofJim Morrison is presented here as a representative ofthis sacred language that tells of this magical perception, long-forgotten, though never completely erased fi"om the human mind. Hence, it is to be seen not only as a bridge to the spiritual realm offeeling and imagination, but also as a technique for ecological survival in this current rational and secular era.<br>Esta dissertação objetiva a articulação do poeta-xamã na tradição poética.

Zanetta, Marianna. "The blind shaman and the lonely death : the last itako of Japan." Thesis, Paris, EPHE, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EPHE5030.

Abstract:
In the north-west of Japan can still be found the last representative of a peculiar shamanism, the shamanism of the itako イタコ, the blind female fusha. The itako can be considered as the last heiresses of a shamanism which has his own roots in the myth; however, they have often been the target of different controversies and debates among anthropologist and religious specialists, who questioned the authenticity of their shamanic experience, and even the possibility to include it in the field of Shamanism. Nevertheless, taking a wider look at the phenomenon, her role, her path, her whole experience allows us to put them in the shamanistic phenomenon. Their activities have a particular functional focus: their specialty resides in the preferential communication with the dead, ancestors’ souls who can’t find peace and who, if neglected, may represent a threat for the living. The main important duty for the itako is to allow the spirit to communicate with their living relatives in order to have their needs satisfied, and their anguish eased. The analysis will thus take into consideration the special relationship between the blind fusha and the world of the dead, on the one hand through the notion of kegare (impurity), which seems to connect both actors, and on the other hand through the notion of on (bond), which seems to indissolubly tie together living and the dead in a relationship of remembrance and debt

Abstract:
The novel exposes the lives of three men, their relationships and families, their projects and frustrations, showing numerous other characters who flock and disappear over the storyline. His scenario, and also a character, is Tel-Aviv, which will be analyzed under the bias of Walter Benjamin in his criticism on the modernization of Paris as the capital of the nineteenth century. The hypothesis is that the changes in the historical context, post-Zionism, understood as another narrative to the national history of Israel, required the coordination between the competent writer in order to tellmore complex ways and questioning, as a meta-narrative which influences the creation of new techniques of writing so as to represent the city\'s historical into the fictionalized way.

Francis, Aaron. "Drinking straws and shaman melodies: a historical and analytical study of the taepyeongso." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/1593.

Abstract:
This paper is about the taepyeongso (also known as hojoek, saenap, nallari), a Korean double-reed instrument closely related to the Chinese suona and a descendent of the Persian zurna. The instrument is examined from a number of perspectives: historical, theoretical, practical, and personal. For historians and musicologists, I compile core background information about the instrument from a variety of key sources; for amateur players and avid listeners, I attempt to provide new avenues for theoretical understanding and analytical inquiry. My own experience as a participant in learning the music in Korea serves as a backdrop to later analyses of melodic forms and structures from the taepyeongso “folk” repertoire. The repertoire may be divided into main three regional styles: neunggye (or gyeong-tori) in the central regions, sinawi in the southwest, and menari in the east. I examine each of these styles in relation to Korean theoretical perspectives on mode and melody. I then focus on gyeong-tori melodies, demonstrating through transcription and analysis of commercial recordings four characteristic approaches to variation and improvisation. In addition to musical analysis, I provide short biographies of important performers, a catalogue of performance contexts, and basic background to the instrument’s construction and playing technique.

Abstract:
Due to increasing investigations and studies of the Kura-Araxes cultural communities, our information about this enigmatic archaeological culture has increased in many respects. Its interactions and regional variations in terms of cultural materials have been analyzed by many scholars. However, our knowledge about its societal variations is still very limited. We do not yet know much about social dynamics behind its material culture that spread out through vast regions in the Caucasus and the Near East. Indeed, there are some fundamental questions about the Kura-Araxes cultural communities that need further investigation. To address these questions, I focus on social inequality and its material manifestations through data collected from Köhne Shahar a Kura-Araxes site in the Chaldran area of the Iranian Azerbaijan. This study uses new data collected from one season of survey and three seasons of excavations at Köhne Shahar to examine the material manifestation of social inequality. Excavations at Köhne Shahar have generated data which allows me to present some preliminary conclusions regarding the state of social inequality at the settlement. I concentrate on four major features of the site, stratigraphy and chronology, fortification wall and external threat, specialized craft production, and residential segregation. Results from investigation and analyses of these evidence suggest that external threat and conflict could have played a role in development of political complexity (power inequality) at Köhne Shahar that could have been extended to control over the economy, especially craft production. I further argue that evidence of residential segregation at the site suggest social segmentation and hierarchical ordering within the community of Köhne Shahar. Overall evidence indicates that the site is a special and a complex version of Kura-Araxes Cultural Communities. I further argue that there is a great potential at Köhne Shahar for addressing social complexity and I discuss that further investigations at the site may shed more light on social dynamics in the Kura-Araxes cultural communities.<br>Anthropology

Abstract:

This paper will be discussing a holistic approach used by my informants who works as complementary medical therapists. Abstract:
Cientes de sua função social, Abramóvitsh, Peretz e Rabinovitch utilizaram a língua ídiche e a cultura do judeu do Leste europeu para instaurar um novo momento da literatura e cultura ídiche.<br>Departing from three Classical Yiddish short stories that have been translated to Portuguese - Mendele Moikher Seforim\'s Sabbath, Itzhok Leibusch Peretz\'s The Reader and Scholem Aleichem\'s The clock - this dissertation aims to investigate the impact of modernity on literary representations of the Sabbath. The analysis of these writings will be conducted by comparing them to each other, highlight the differences in modes of representation on a same religious event. The biographies of these authors were extremely relevant to understand their work, since they expressed the ideals of Haskalah in their literary texts, through their reliable narrators. These authors have masterfully included in their production the dichotomized concept of tradition versus modernity in their texts, in order to illuminate the life of the shtetl community from within, and to portray the ways of thought of the simple Jew, while aiming at turning him into a modern man. Aware of their social roles, Abramóvitsh, Rabinovitch and Peretz have used Yiddish language and the culture of the Eastern European Jewish to establish a new era for the Yiddish culture and literature.

Abstract:
<p> Shamanism is the world&rsquo;s oldest integrated healing system. Cross-culturally this practice has survived marginalization to indigenous societies and has crossed over to the contemporary world. The reductionist model of the current health care system has prompted people to seek holistic and alternative methods to support their well-being. This has inspired health practitioners and researchers to investigate and experience the benefits of shamanic practices.</p><p> Following a yearning desire to explore shamanic practices, and to reconnect with her indigenous roots, the author, a therapist of native background, traveled to a remote location to participate in shamanic rituals with an indigenous community in Mexico. Using an autoethnographic enquiry approach, this dissertation research study provides an insight into the sacred healing shamanic practices and to the researcher&rsquo;s path to find the shaman within and her own wholeness. The researcher, who is the only participant in this study, collected data following qualitative autoethnographic enquiry guidelines. Narratives of personal experiences with shamanic practices served as data to transcribe and report this enquiry. The results of this study reveal the powerful cathartic effect shamanic practices had on the researcher as accounted expressively in this dissertation.</p>

Full text
Abstract:
Biotechnology is evolving to produce pharmaceutical proteins in plants. Plantbased pharmaceutical production creates concerns of exposure in an open environment and contamination of the food supply. Consequently, quantitative human health and ecological risk assessments were conducted for aprotinin, gastric lipase, and LT-B expressed in maize. A comparative, qualitative risk assessment was conducted for conventionally derived and plant-cell derived Newcastle disease virus vaccine. Effect and exposure scenarios were modeled for each quantitative risk assessment and each scenario was based on a tiered approach in which inadvertent exposure through ingestion were examined to determine a risk characterization of the plant-based pharmaceuticals. The qualitative Newcastle disease virus vaccine risk assessment characterized risks based on the potential exposures to the poultry being vaccinated, to humans administering the vaccine, and to non-target birds. For the human-health risk assessment, the dietary exposure evaluation model (DEEM) was used to estimate the inadvertent dietary intake of the pharmaceutical proteins in food. The ecological risk assessment used Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate the exposure of each protein in maize for four receptor species. The human-health risk assessments revealed that the most conservative scenario produced higher risk quotients (RQ's) than the other two scenarios. The difference in risks was attributable to the differences in toxic endpoints of the proteins. Although the protein expressions and dietary consumption were assumed to be the same, dietary risks between the proteins varied by more than 56,000 times. The human-health risk assessment revealed that risks will vary dramatically and depend on factors such as the specific pharmaceutical protein, protein expression, and exposure scenarios. The assessments reinforced the need for case-by-case assessments. The ecological risk assessment demonstrated that risks will vary between species and between proteins, based primarily on differences in toxic endpoint and consumption rates. It shows the utility of probabilistic, quantitative risk assessment methodologies and supports the human dietary risk assessment by demonstrating the importance of assessing risks from plant-based pharmaceuticals on a case-by-case basis. The qualitative assessment illustrated that fewer effects and contamination issues were associated with the use of the plant-cell derived Newcastle disease virus vaccine compared to conventionally derived vaccines.
