Abstract:
This is an ethnographic study that focuses on Zahmanê Êzîdîa Li Dalarna, the Yezidi cemetery, in Borlänge. The Swedish town of Borlänge has one of the largest Yezidi diaspora communities in Western Europe; a majority emigrated from the Northern Iraqi region of Sheikhan during the 1990s and early 2000s. The overall aim of this project is to investigate how the Yezidi community in Borlänge puts Zahmanê Êzîdîa Li Dalarna into use, the meanings ascribed to the site by individual interviewees, and how these relate to ritual places and practices in Sheikhan. The empirical material stems from observations and interviews among members of three extended Yezidi families in Borlänge and in Sheikhan, and archival material from the Church of Sweden. Fieldwork in Sheikhan focused on the valley of Lalish and the cemetery sites in the Yezidi villages in Sheikhan. The empirical material is presented, analysed and discussed through a theoretical framework of place, creation and maintenance of social memory through ritual practice, and the concept of transfer of ritual. The empirical material reveals that salient ritual actions and elements from ceremonies in Lalish and the Yezidi villages in Sheikhan are transferred to Borlänge, and there put into use for ritual practices and for creating and maintaining a collective identity outside of Iraq.

Lawrence, Toby Katrine. "Whose body? Nicholas and Sheila Pye's 'The Coronation'." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43317.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2008, Canadian artists Nicholas and Sheila Pye travelled from Toronto, Ontario to Graz, Austria for a six-month artist residency. Working within the Austrian landscape and drawing from an influence of Northern European Medieval and Renaissance art the Pyes produced The Coronation, a twelve-minute, three-channel video installation enmeshed with art historical references. Their deliberate appropriation of the triptych format and the Adam and Eve imagery of the fifteenth-century Ghent Altarpiece by Jan van Eyck place the Edenic narrative of the side panels in The Coronation in conversation with the shifting seasons and ecological processes in the centre panel, providing numerous entry points for contemplation. While this video installation suggests an exploration of the iconographic body, it is also indicative of the Pyes’ complication of the notion of the autonomous human body, its engagement with the environment and, furthermore, an emphasis on the instability of identity. Previous writing on the collaborative practice of the Pyes has taken the form of exhibition reviews and curatorial essays, concentrating on a sustained narrative that prioritizes the Pyes’ relationship. Shifting away from the specificities of a biographical framework, my research focuses on The Coronation’s attention to the interrelationality of life. Furthermore, the Pyes push their artistic practice beyond one that assumes the specificity and autonomy of an individual human body, reconstituted in the intersecting body and earth. This informs our understanding of corporeal signification as comprised of embodied social and ideological performativity. Framed by a broad ecological lens and with Judith Butler’s notion of performativity in mind, I demonstrate the capacity of the Pyes’ work to problematize the stability of physical and enunciated boundaries that demarcate the human body.

Haberstock, Kara Lyn. "Sheikhs, Salafis, and the State: The Evolution of Muslim Politics in Chechnya." Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/297597.

Full text
Abstract:
Current discourse regarding the contemporary status of Islam in Chechnya tends toward one of two narratives. In the first, Islam becomes merely a political tool wielded in the hands of nationalists, warlords, and now the pro-Russian Chechen government seeking to unite the North Caucasian ethnic groups in the aftermath of a Soviet collapse. In the second, Islam is bound up in the Chechen identity and viewed as a form of resistance to Russia and distinguishing cultural trait. In both narratives, Chechen Muslims are studied in isolation from wider trends within the Central Asian region and the greater Islamic realm. This paper situates events in Chechnya within the context of movements across the Middle East and Central Asia. Through the examination of symbols, rituals, and rhetoric employed by the state and by dissident groups within Chechnya, I analyze the current struggle between the state and dissident Islamists in Chechnya to establish a dominant discourse of Islamic practice. Through this analysis, I move beyond labels of "fundamentalist" Islam and "traditional" Islam often assigned within the Chechen context to demonstrate how Islamic tradition and practice are being re-imagined in the wake of the Soviet collapse and the failed separatist conflict in Chechnya.

Kaufmann, Mirja, and Patrik Jakobsson. "Hållbar turism i charterparadiset : en studie av Sharm el Sheikh." Thesis, Södertörns högskola, Institutionen för ekonomi och företagande, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:sh:diva-16899.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aims to, from a sustainable perspective; contribute to a deeper understanding of how tourism has affected the destination Sharm el Sheikh in Egypt. The result show that the destination has been affected to a large extent by tourism, within the socio cultural sector, the economic sector and the environmental sector, all within the UN’s definition of sustainable tourism. Within the socio cultural sector there are several problems; the main one behind many of which is that the indigenous people feel they have not been given the possibility to affect the destination as much as they would have wanted. The positive effect that tourism has had to the socio cultural sector is a greater understanding for the local culture. The largest affect in the economic sector, by the tourism in Sharm el Sheikh, has turned out to be that 97 percent of the income made by tourists disappears from the destination because of a so called leakage, the main reason being the foreign owners of the hotels and the all-inclusive establishments. The Egyptian government has tried to reduce this leakage by introducing a law that at least 49 percent of each company is owned by an Egyptian, although this does not appear to have given the wanted effect. Instead some Egyptians act like goalkeeper’s for a fixed fee instead of a real ownership within the companies. The environmental problems caused by tourism in Sharm el Sheikh is also several. The wear on the marine environment, which is a common reason to travel for many to the destination, is one of the largest. Tourism causes an excessive wear on the environment by destroying coral reefs, over fishing, solid waste and emissions. To contribute knowledge to how it affected the destination Sharm el Sheikh, five interviews were conducted with people who all have a connection to destination, and also literature and previous research has been used.

De, Villiers Izabel. "Mistiek in die bundel Die swart kombuis deur Sheila Cussons." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/29615.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focuses on the mystical elements in Die swart kombuis (1978) by Sheila Cussons. This second collection of poetry of Cussons grows out of a context of the investigation of the tension between the earthly and the metaphysical that manifested in her first publication, Plektrum (1970), to a concentrated experience of the spiritual and human search for meaning and integration in Die swart kombuis. This publication can be placed within the tradition of Afrikaans mystical poetry. The mystical element is to be observed with the title of the collection, which can be read as a symbol of transformation. The word “kombuis” (kitchen) becomes an archetypal arena loaded with meaning and associations that are explored and expanded upon in the collection. The poems function as poetic expressions of the poet’s relationship with her persona and the internal dialogues that take place during these confrontations. The collection can be read as a creative expression of the poet’s individuation process. Cussons exposes the integration and the interpretation of her archetypes and allows the reader to participate in this sensitive process of personal enlightenment. The various stages of self-realisation find expression in the symbolic use of language and concepts that Cussons employs. This technique takes the reader on an abstract journey of selfinvestigation. By giving poetic expression to her personal process of individuation, Cussons presents the reader with a creative vehicle through which he or she can step into the mystical dimension. Previously, the reader might not have had exposure to complex concepts such as individuation, archetypes and symbolism; however, through the reading of this collection of poetry, access to these ideas is vicariously granted. This study aims to formulate a reading model that is able to identify, analyse and explain the various mystical elements in selected poems in Die swart kombuis. Mystical elements and characteristics are identified to give the reader an introduction to the language use and associated symbolism. The structure of the reading model incorporates ideas and theories from theorists such as the psychoanalyst Carl Gustav Jung, the philosopher and psychologist William James and the poet, Jungian analyst and cantadora Clarissa Pinkola Estés. The ideas of literary theorists Roland ix Barthes, Umberto Eco, Jonathan Culler and Frank Kermode are also included in the approach to the text. Attention is, furthermore, paid to symbolism, mythology and the use of poetry as a form of therapy and self-reflection.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>The conflicts in Iraq and Syria are protracted civil wars with multi-state and non-state actors vying for influence. Iraqi Kurdistan is arguably the most important partner for the United States in our current fight against Daesh, which has exploited the factional politics of Iraq. Special Operations Forces (SOF) will be maintaining persistent engagement in the region for the foreseeable future, and must understand the formal and informal relational structures that underpin these conflicts. This project is a social network and social movement theory analysis of the power structures of Iraqi Kurdistan. It attempts to provide more awareness to Special Operations Command Central (SOCCENT) and U.S. policy makers on the patrons, influencers, and brokers that they can leverage in their efforts to understand and influence the Kurds. This thesis thoroughly examines the patronage nature of Iraqi Kurdistan since WWI and provides insight into individuals from minority groups and political parties that are structurally located in positions of brokerage and influence. With this information, SOCCENT, the project’s sponsor, will be better able to understand the region. Furthermore, the conflicts of the future will likely involve protracted, multi-factional, intrastate civil wars, where the lessons learned from the Kurdish situation will serve future SOF well.

Abdel-Mageed, Dina Hamdi Mohamed. "E-Sheikhs: How Online Islamic Discourse Can Reproduce Authoritarian Power Structures and Traditional Islamic Beliefs." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/18403.

Full text
Abstract:
Social media have been hailed by many scholars as one of the main catalysts of the Arab Spring, and hopes were high that the winds of change would promote a less hegemonic Islamic discourse. Online religious discourse, particularly that of Islamic preachers, was an essential tool in the struggle against authoritarianism during Arab Spring. Yet, six years on, the utilisation of new media in the Arab region is framed by new political realities, and a highly politicised and polarised religious discourse is playing no less of a role in the media landscape. This study revisits the relation between online Islamic discourse and the political situation in the region, with special reference to Islamic preachers in Egypt. The current trends in Islamic discourse on social media raise a number of thought-provoking questions: Does Islamic preachers’ discourse on Facebook contribute to reproducing or resisting the existing power structures in the Arab world? To what extent does online Islamic discourse reflect offline power relations? Can Facebook act as an Islamic public sphere? This study offers answers to these questions by analysing some of the content posted on Facebook by a number of prominent Muslim preachers between 2013 and 2016. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and the lens of Public Sphere Theory, it investigates the socio-political aspects of the preachers’ discourse, highlighting the utilisation of religion as an ideological justification for the existing social order in the Arab world. This study delves into power relations in religious discourse and the role of media in exercising religious and political power, trying to explore the relationship between digital media, religious discourse and political hegemony. It argues that, in this specific context, social media fail to act as an effective public sphere because digitally-mediated Islamic discourse reflect the same power relations that exist offline.

Alebrahim, Abdulrahman. "Beyond sheikhs and merchants : the role of balancing powers in pre-independence Kuwaiti politics (1921-1962)." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/29880.

Full text
Abstract:
This study re-examines the history of constitutional development in Kuwait. It argues that existing scholarship on the subject suffers from several shortcomings due to the lack of consideration given to the role played by some important social forces on the Kuwaiti political scene. Most historians working on Kuwait’s modern politics have focussed on two forces: the ruling family and the merchants. Althoughthese two actors wereundeniably the most influential, other segments of society should not be overlooked. They had a decisive impact, with varying levels of influence across time, on the balance of power in Kuwait. This thesis thus generates new insights by considering the role of these segments of society which have played a key role in balancing the struggle between the sheikhs and the merchants over the nature of the political system in Kuwait between 1921 and 1962. These segments are termed “balancing powers” and include, among others, religious scholars, pearl divers, workers and intellectuals. These balancing powers were especially vocal in the debates preceding the 1962 constitution. The year 1921 was chosen as the starting point because it was the year of the establishment of Kuwait’s institutional and constitutional frameworks. In addition, it witnessed the birth of the first political institution in Kuwait: the 1921 Shura Council. The relation between the development of the balancing powers and Kuwaiti Constitutions since 1921 has been through three phases. The fist phase was the ‘balance’ between the ruler and the merchants, but without an obvious article giving the balancing powers their rights. The ‘control’ phase was in the 1938 Constitution, when members of the Legislative Council were given 3 the right of legislation for all segments of Kuwaiti society. The final phase was ‘empowerment’, which was a different stage because the balancing powers had the majority in the Constituent Assembly and they voted and agreed to adopt 1962 Constitution. This thesis employs an historical investigation of all information related to the topic through available documents manuscripts and interviews. In particular, it uses previously unexplored documents such as Kuwait Municipality documents and minutes of Kuwait’s Education Department in the 1950s.

Abstract:
This study examines heteroglossia and the dialogic nature of Sheila Heti’s novel Motherhood, published in 2018. The novel features a main character who muses on the question of whether or not to have children, the novel ending with her nearing the age of 40 and deciding not to try and become a mother. Through the use of M.M. Bakhtin’s theory of the novel as a dialogic medium, as well as Anne Herrmann’s theory on the female dialogic, the purpose of the study is to look at the way in which the main character comes to the conclusion not to have children. The novel is read through the lens of the languages and voices of different characters, determining whose language is allowed to be the dominant one, and the effect of these languages on the main character’s decision-making.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis participates in a reconsideration of English-Canadian literary critical history through a reading of the critical construction of Sheila Watson's novel, The Double Hook. The thesis examines the rhetoric by which Watson's novel has been read as central to and representative of Canada's literary cultural maturity. That maturity has been measured by such modernist formal principles as the objective correlative and the mythical method, formalist standards and tastes valorized by New Criticism and by the synchronic mythographies of Freudian psychoanalysis, structuralist anthropology, and structuralist literary criticism (such as Frye's mythopoeics). The thesis argues that a structural mechanism of sacrifice is central to the literary critical narrative about this novel; that the myth-making by which violence becomes sacred and thereby marks the establishment, redemption, or survival of culture, is founded specifically on the sacrifice of women in The Double Hook.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the significant role of expressionist and minimalist visual aesthetics in the construction (imagery, structuring, language) and subsequent interpretation of Sheila Watson's The Double Hook. While Sherrill Grace's Regression & Apocalypse the groundwork for a literary expressionist reading of Watson's novel, this study elaborates the crucial links between literary and painterly expressionism in the novel and suggests Watson's critique of the expressionist aesthetic. A reading of the minimalist aesthetic, as both an extension of and an alternative to the expressionist reading of the text, emphasizes the relevance of noniconic painterly strategies to the novel and, by implication, of alternate forms of spectatorship that are demanded by the text. This study ultimately shows how Watson creatively synthesizes these extremes of modernist visual aesthetics and asks for the reader's imaginative and critical engagement with the modernist arts.

Abstract:
For centuries, people have been fascinated with how the ancient Egyptians lived, and particularly how they died. Although Egyptologists in the past had a greater interest in the treasures that accompanied the dead, there has now been a shift in focus on the actual ancient Egyptians themselves and their ways of life. Recognizing the health and disease status of ancient Egyptians has become particularly important. The aim of this research project is to document the paleopathology of the individuals from the sites of Dayr al-Barsha and Sheikh Said encompassing the Old Kingdom (2686 - 2160 BC), the First Intermediate Period (2160 - 2055 BC), and the Middle Kingdom (2055-1650 BC) periods. The site of Dayr al-Barsha was most importantly the necropolis, or burial site, used by the inhabitants of the ancient city of Hermopolis Magna, and it was also a very prominent quarry site. Today, Dayr al-Barsha is a large scale archaeological site that has been divided into eleven zones. The results of this research reveal a documented list of paleopathologies that include traumatic conditions, congenital anomalies, joint diseases, infectious diseases, hematological disorders, dental pathology, neoplastic conditions, and various other conditions that ailed the people in their daily lives. Fractures and dental diseases are the paleopathologies that occurred most frequently. These pathologies provide important knowledge about the living conditions and occupations during the span of the Old Kingdom through the Middle Kingdom.<br>M.A.<br>Department of Anthropology<br>Sciences<br>Anthropology MA

Full text
Abstract:
Kurdish ulema, a religious class with a strong influence on Kurdish social life, have developed various forms of religious nationalism. This study offers a possible reading of the accounts of Kurdish ulema during the Turkish Republican period, as a neglected form of Kurdish nationalism. I illustrate how they defined the Kurdish nation in the name of religion, supplied religious metaphors and symbols central to the representation of the Kurdish nation, and even produced an alternative to secular nationalism by sharing the underlying grammar of modern nationalism. This calls into question the concept of Kurdish nationalism as something uniform and secular. Such accounts of religious nationalism were largely suppressed in modern Kurdish history writing under Marxist influences. Since the 1940s, this historiography often marginalized the narratives of Kurdish ulema by setting them apart from Kurdish national struggle. This project provides the first in-depth analysis of the role of Kurdish ulema in the story of the development of Kurdish nationalism during the Turkish Republican period (1920s-1990s). My analysis challenges the dichotomy in the Kurdish nationalist historiography that Islamic and Kurdish identities are exclusive of one another. Kurdish ulema combined their Islamic identity with a strong sense of Kurdish national consciousness. Some envisioned the Kurdish nation’s liberation in education, some in joining secular national movements, some in conformity with Turkish-Kurdish brotherhood and some in political Islamic resistance. I emphasize that Kurds, whether secular or religious, formed a united front against Kurdish regional underdevelopment, exclusivist state policies, and exploitative sheikhs as late as the late 1960s. There has been an overlap between opposing Kurdish groups and the division between them was not primordial. These initially similar concerns, however, were gradually shaped by different popular ideologies of their day: nationalism, Marxism, and Islamism, in Turkey and around the world.

Burge, Amy. "Desiring the east : a comparative study of Middle English romance and modern popular sheikh romance." Thesis, University of York, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3121/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis comparatively examines a selection of twenty-first century sheikh romances and Middle English romances from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries that imagine an erotic relationship occurring between east and west. They do so against a background of conflict, articulated in military confrontation and binary religious and ethnic division. The thesis explores the strategies used to facilitate the cross-cultural relationship across such a gulf of difference and considers what a comparison of medieval and modern romance can reveal about attitudes towards otherness in popular romance. In Chapter 1, I analyse the construction of the east in each genre, investigating how the homogenisation of the romance east in sheikh romance distances it from the geopolitical reality of those parts of the Middle East seen, by the west, to be "other". Chapter 2 examines the articulation of gender identity and the ways in which these romances subvert and reassert binary gender difference to uphold normative heterosexual relations. Chapter 3 considers how ethnic and religious difference is nuanced, in particular through the use of fabric, breaking down the disjunction between east and west. Chapter 4 investigates the way ethnicity, religion and gender affect hierarchies of power in the abduction motif, enabling undesirable aspects of the east to be recast. The key finding of this thesis is that both romance genres facilitate the cross-cultural erotic relationship by rewriting apparently binary differences of religion and ethnicity to create sameness. While the east is figured differently in Middle English and modern sheikh romance, the strategies they use to facilitate the cross-cultural erotic relationship are similar. The thesis concludes that the constancy of certain attitudes towards the east in both medieval and modern romance reveals a persistence of conservative values in representations of the east in romance.

Mcgovern, Kathleen R. "Sheila P. Desai performing language and identities| Adult immigrant students and the creation of a play." Thesis, University of Massachusetts Boston, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10118489.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> This thesis presents findings from a yearlong study of a classroom of adult immigrants studying English as a Second Language (ESL) in the U.S., who collaboratively created and performed plays based on their life experiences. This research is rooted in poststructuralist theories of identity in second language learning (e.g., Norton, 2000; 2013), a view of language pedagogy as a form of liberation (Freire, 1970), and the notion that theater can be used by non-actors to critically engage with issues of relevance to the community (Boal, 1979). The teacher-researcher of the class used ethnographic investigation informed by autoethnography and action research to examine: 1) how students perceived theater as affecting their language development, and 2) how individual students&rsquo; identity development was affected by participation in the class. Data included interviews, field notes, audiovisual recordings, artifacts, and journal entries. Relevant literature in the fields of immigration, second language acquisition, and drama in language teaching is reviewed and discussed. The process of engaging students in playwriting and performing is detailed in the findings section along with a discussion of the nature of theater in the second language classroom. The data analysis exhibits that creating a play had many positive effects on students&rsquo; affective dimensions, second language development, classroom dynamics, and investment in the course, as well as some negative effects including anxiety amongst students at the prospect of performing in English and instances of interpersonal tensions. Classroom implications of the study include the recommendation that teachers frame theater explicitly in a positive light and make expectations of students clear from the beginning of the course.</p>

Lord, Marie-Linda. "Le mode symboliste dans Les fous de Bassan d'Anne Hébert et The Double Hook de Sheila Watson." Mémoire, Université de Sherbrooke, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/11143/9991.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The World Heritage Buffer zones are a valuable tool for the conservation of properties on the World Heritage List. Throughout the history of the World Heritage Convention, the protection of the ‘surroundings’ of listed properties was considered an essential component of the conservation strategy, for cultural and natural sites alike. This thesis is an investigation of the social process of construction of place in two buffer zones: Pasargadae and Sheikh Safi al-Din Khanegah and Shrine Ensemble. This thesis explores buffer zones as liminal spaces – the transitory spaces – where different actors have inscribed parallel personal and communal spaces within them by reproducing patterns of usage and movement that reflect their daily lives, including conflict, rather than allowing them to be fully transformed into a general protected area.

Cabayao, Ulysses. "Posthumous Agency on Facebook." Thesis, Canberra, ACT : The Australian National University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1885/118431.

Full text
Abstract:
Posthumous Agency on Facebook Abstract: The concept of agency remains contested in anthropology. One aspect of the debate spans from those who, on the one hand, insist that agency is exclusive to living human beings, with all its accompanying implication, to those who, on the other, believe that non-living, non-human things also exert agency. Posthumous agency straddles this debate with its strange creature: the dead human being. In this thesis, however, I seek to examine how the dead in the context of Facebook challenge existing literature on the agency of the dead. While the agency of the dead has been recently garnering scholarly attention, this interest has focused largely on the agentive capacity of the corporeal remains of the person: corpse, ashes, bones. The dead do not simply remain dead; they remain socially, symbolically, and mnemonically significant. They further live on through distributed instances of their personhood, through their material possessions or through their surviving social relationships. I apply Alfred Gell’s theory of the art nexus to examine how the agency of the dead is abducted through their corporeal, material, and social remains. Building on three thematic treatments of posthumous agency as heuristic, I analyze the presence of the dead on Facebook to demonstrate and expound on their posthumous agency. The findings of this thesis affirm the fuzzy boundaries of agency that make agency slippery enough to be applied to the dead, to be distributed across one’s social network, and to be shared with digital technology.

Alhosani, Hamad Ali. "The political thought of the late H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, founder of the United Arab Emirates (1966-2004)." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3448/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis highlights the political thought of H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, a man who made decisive contributions to the history of the twentieth century, and the various reflections of this political thought on the UAE, its people and the international community at large. In this regard, it explores and analyzes a multifaceted political thought that took its form in political practice in the establishment of the Federation, the management of crises and in the building of a prosperous enduring nation. Evaluating the factors that influenced the formation of the doctrinal matrix of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, this thesis traces the background from within which Sheikh Zayed’s leadership skills evolved and developed. From his early years onwards, Sheikh Zayed made a firm commitment to undertake the considerable task of building a fully fledged state out of a divided tribal background, improve the lives of citizens, and carve a place for the UAE in the international arena. This research project illustrates the implications and dimensions of Sheikh Zayed's political thinking process exemplified in his discursive statements and actions. It documents and analyzes the career achievements of Sheikh Zayed, a statesman acknowledged by contemporary and future generations to have had significant impact on the political direction and overall development of the UAE. This impact also demonstrates the potential of his contribution to the field of political thought. One of this study’s primary conclusions is that the accomplishments of Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan during his rule have resulted primarily from his development of an integrated doctrine of governance that reflected his humanistic outlook. In this regard, at both the domestic and international levels, Sheikh Zayed’s political decisions and acts were undertaken with reference to this outlook.
