A phase refinement program for high-resolution macromolecular structures is described. The mean phase error of an initial structural solution can often be as large as 60° prior to attempting a refinement, but theCRUNCHprogram procedure may allow one to reduce this phase error to 10 or 20° for all data prior to actually inspecting any map to see how well it may fit a structural model. The procedure is similar to the real/reciprocal space refinement loop incorporated in thehalf-bakedalgorithm described by Sheldrick [Sheldrick & Gould (1995).Acta Cryst.B51, 423–431.] Refinement results are pr

The success of theab initiophasing process mainly depends on two parameters: data resolution and structural complexity. In agreement with the Sheldrick rule, the presence of heavy atoms can also play a nonnegligible role in the success of direct methods. The increased efficiency of the Patterson methods and the advent of new phasing techniques based on extrapolated reflections have changed the state of the art. In particular, it is not clear how much the resolution limit and the structural complexity may be pushed in the presence of heavy atoms. In this paper, it is shown that the limits fixed

Abstract:
Trimble (1986) has pointed out a shortcoming of the current wave of literature on negative symptoms: there is no overall consensus within psychiatry as to which symptoms and signs are to be considered positive and which negative (Kayton, 1973; Carpenter et al, 1976; Sheldrich et al, 1977; WHO, 1979; Andreasen, 1979; Jablensky, 1981; Crow, 1982, this volume; Rosen et al, 1984; Zubin, 1985; Kulhara et al, 1986).

Abstract:
African reed frogs are widespread and highly polymorphic for colour pattern. The Hyperolius viridiflavus complex includes 121 described taxa, including subspecies, which are presently synonymised as 16 species. However, the taxonomy is confused as colour patterns have been used to identify species, despite an inadequate understanding of pattern variation and overlap. This study examined 267 sequences of the 16S rRNA fragment from individuals across the range of the group, from Senegal to Ethiopia, and to the southern tip of Africa. Maximum likelihood analysis showed that there were 14 species

Abstract:
Early identification of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) continues to be a challenge despite universal screening efforts. One explanation is that screening tools have lower sensitivity and specificity than initial studies report when accounting for incomplete follow‐up for all children screened. Sheldrick and colleagues used statistical modeling to demonstrate the impact on sensitivity and specificity when assumptions about the diagnostic outcome of children who do not pursue diagnostic evaluation are altered. Crucially, the work of Sheldrick et al. serves as a reminder that autism screening in
