Abstract:
This brief coda considers the advantages of making the aesthetic a key term in our thinking about secularism. Accounts of Victorian secularization often treat the aesthetic as a kind of fetishized shell for the vanished contents of belief. What Arnold, Eliot, and Pater show us is how aesthetic thought offered Victorian writers something more nuanced: a rubric for mapping out the different spaces and distributions of religion in the modern world. Approaching the problem in this way, we not only gain new interest in Arnold and Pater as secularist thinkers but also discover how their work informe

Abstract:
Based on a lecture at PCMI this chapter is structured around two sets of results, one concerning groups of automorphisms of surfaces and the other concerning the nilpotent genus of groups. The first set of results exemplifies the theme that even the nicest of groups can harbour a diverse array of complicated finitely presented subgroups: we shall see that the finitely presented subgroups of the mapping class groups of surfaces of finite type can be much wilder than had been previously recognised. The second set of results fits into the quest to understand which properties of a finitely generat

Abstract:
This book is a collection of articles written by established researchers on the early prehistory of the Coastal Plain of the Southeastern U.S. The Coastal Plain is considered both geographically, as it extends from Virginia to Alabama, and chronologically, over potentially the last 50,000 years. Topics considered are the Pre-Clovis at Topper, Capps, and Vero Site; the potential for inundated early sites on the shelf; the mapping and petrography of Coastal Plain chert sources; the Paleoindians on the South Carolina Coastal Plain; the Younger Dryas and the Cosmic Impact Hypothesis; site burial a
