Abstract:
The present study compares the burnout levels of vocational instructors working in vocational rehabilitation centers and sheltered workshops in Israel. Sixty-six vocational instructors filled out the Kafry and Pines Burnout Measure, the Kumin Attitudes Measure, and a brief demographic and jobs data questionnaire. The result showed that vocational instructors working in sheltered workshops had higher burnout levels and lower job satisfaction as compared with instructors working in vocational rehabilitation centers. These findings were interpreted based on job framework variables that differed between the systems.

Looking at the history of segregation in education and the workplace for blind and handicapped persons, together with the relationship of segregation to social attitudes and to opportunity, the author poses the question of the relevance of sheltered workshops today. Abstract:
To describe the core elements of modern psychiatric rehabilitation. Based on selected examples we describe the discussion about values in mental health care with focus on Europe. We present outcome data from studies, which have tried to implement care structures based on this value discussion. In the second half of the 20th century, mental health care in all European and other high-income countries changed conceptually and structurally. Deinstitutionalisation reduced the number of psychiatric beds and transferred priority to outpatient care and community-based services, but community mental health programs developed differently across and within these countries. High-income countries in Europe continued to invest in costly traditional services that were neither evidence-based nor person-centered by emphasising inpatient services, sheltered group homes and sheltered workshops. We argue that evidence-based, person-centred, recovery-oriented psychiatric rehabilitation offers a parsimonious solution to developing a consensus plan for community-based care in Europe. The challenges to scaling up effective psychiatric rehabilitation services in high-income countries are not primarily a lack of resources, but rather a lack of political will and inefficient use and dysfunctional allocation of resources.

Abstract:
This study examined the percentage of 21,257 supported employees served by 74 state-federal vocational rehabilitation agencies in 2013 who would have earned more wages in sheltered workshops than in the community. It found that the overwhelming majority of supported employees earned more in their communities at all wage comparison points; however, substantial differences in wages were identified according to the participant’s disability type, occupation, vocational rehabilitation agency, and the region in which they lived.

Abstract:
SummaryThe foundation of a rehabilitation center for schizophrenics annexed to the Psychiatric University Clinic of Vienna in 1963 initiated a systematic readaptation strategy for these patients all over Austria. The main task of these rehabilitation units is to evaluate the working and social capacities after acute illness episodes, to motivate the patient to accept professional activities and living conditions adapted to their health state through reinforcement of special competences, to replace inadequate attribution and coping styles by appropriate behavior patterns and to enhance compliance for necessary drug treatment. During the rehabilitation period the families are systematically prepared to live with the patients. In accordance with the obtained level of rehabilitation the patients are then either reintegrated into their family and/or normal professional conditions or placed in special settings (homes, sheltered workshops). A long-term followup is assured.

Abstract:
Promoveu a autoestima e a autoconfiança. Abstract:
As workers with a wide array of both acquired and congenital disabilities lost access to the paid labor market, legislators and reformers began to search for a way to return people with disabilities to productivity and self-support. Influenced by the Protestant work ethic and the long-standing association of dependency with poor citizenship, rehabilitators tended to focus more on restoring their clients’ putatively damaged morality than on determining how to integrate disabled people into the wage labor market. Nevertheless, vocational rehabilitation programs did offer some disabled people and their families modest incomes during times of considerable stress. Chapter 6 traces the emergence of Goodwill Industries and the ways in which its sheltered workshops replicated mainstream employers’ use of piecework and concerns with efficiency—dynamics that led managers to exclude many disabled workers as too inefficient. Due to the complexity of disability and the ways that it intersected with age, gender, and family status, few clients moved into the outside labor force.
