Cao, Siyang. "Crafting elastic masculinity : formations of shenti, intimacy and kinship among young men in China." Thesis, University of York, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20182/.

Full text
Abstract:
Under the ever-deepening transformations in contemporary China, traditional gender relations have been reshaped, but elements of patriarchy informed by the legacy of Confucianism still linger. These intricately interwoven forces have exerted a great impact on the gendered lives of the young generation. This research aims to examine young men’s views of Chinese manhood and how they construct and negotiate masculinities in their everyday lives. I conducted 30 semi-structured in-depth interviews with Chinese men aged between 22 and 32, who are mostly ordinary men in the middle social stratum in Shanghai and Shenyang. I regard Chinese men as actively negotiating their identities within particular stages of their life course. Overall, this thesis is informed by perspectives of relational selfhood and Confucian notions of the relational, reflexive, and embodied self that is an ongoing process of becoming. I bring indigenous concepts and cultural repertoires into critical dialogue with global and leading sociological theories of individualisation and reflexivity. Based on my analyses, I introduce and develop the concept of ‘elastic masculinity’. Specifically, I argue that the masculinity of ordinary young men is flexible, adaptable and accommodating. However, the term elastic masculinity also illustrates that it is limited by the availability of resources, structural constraints, cultural traditions and diverse personal relationships. Thus, elastic masculinity is an appropriate metaphor and an important concept to understand Chinese young men’s active engagement with China’s global modernity, increasing individualisation, shifting gender values and local realities.

Wu, Meiling, and 吴美玲. "Ages, geochemistry and metamorphism of the neoarchean basement in Shandong province : implications for evolution of the eastern block, North China Craton." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/196017.

Full text
Abstract:
The Archean basement rocks in Shandong Province are important components of the Eastern Block in the North China Craton, consisting predominantly of granitoid gneisses with minor mafic and felsic supracrustal rocks and charnockites. They are exposed, from west to east, in the Luxi Granite-Greenstone Terrane, Yishui Terrane and Jiaodong Terrane, of which the low-grade Luxi Granite-Greenstone Terrane has been well studied, whereas little work has been done on the medium- to high-grade Yishui and Jiaodong Terranes. Controversies have long surrounded the timing of crustal growth and tectonic setting of these two terranes. This project is designed to resolve these issues by integrating field investigations, petrography, geochronology, geochemistry and metamorphism of the Yishui and Jiaodong Terranes. New zircon U-Pb data from the major lithologies have revealed that the Jiaodong Terrane experienced multi-stage magmatism at ~2.9 Ga, ~2.7 Ga and 2.6-2.5 Ga followed by two metamorphic events at ~2.50 Ga and 1.9-1.8 Ga, whereas the Yishui Terrane underwent single magmatism at 2.57-2.53 Ga followed by a single metamorphic event at ~2.50 Ga. Zircon Hf isotopic data have revealed that the Jiaodong Terrane underwent juvenile crustal growth with significant ancient crustal material additions at 3.4-3.1 and 2.8-2.7 Ga, while the Yishui Terrane experienced juvenile crustal growth with significant addition of crustal material at 2.8-2.7 Ga. Both the Jiaodong and Yishui Terranes experienced crustal reworking with minor juvenile additions at 2.6-2.5 Ga. Whole-rock compositions and Nd isotopes from the Jiaodong granitoid gneisses suggest that their protoliths are typical Archean tonalitic-trondhjemitic-granodioritic (TTG) suite. They are high in SiO2, Al2O3, Na2O, Sr and Sr/Y ratios, but low in MgO, K2O, TiO2, Cr, Ni, Y and Mg#. They are generally enriched in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements, depleted in heavy rare earth elements and high field strength elements, with slight Eu anomalies. Two groups of granitoid gneisses have been recognized: low- and high-HREE groups, of which the former was generated from partial melting of metabasaltic rocks leaving eclogite in the residue, whereas the latter was formed by partial melting of metabasaltic rocks leaving garnet-amphibolite in the residue. Whole-rock Nd isotopes reveal that the protoliths of Mesoarchean granitoid gneisses were derived mainly from juvenile sources, whereas the early Neoarchean granitoid gneisses were derived from juvenile sources with significant additions of crustal material and the late Neoarchean granitoid gneisses were mainly derived from continental crustal sources. These features indicate that the protoliths of the Jiaodong granitoid gneisses were possibly formed by partial melting of thickened lower crust related to underplating of mafic magmas. Mafic granulites (~2.50 Ga) of the Yishui Terrane show three distinct mineral assemblages corresponding to the pre-peak, peak and post-peak metamorphic stages, with P-T conditions constrained at 660-730℃/<6.6 kbar, 800-820℃ /8.0-8.5 kbar and 686-710℃/7.6-8.6 kbar, respectively, by using THERMOCALC pseudosection modeling. The results define an anticlockwise P-T path involving near-isobaric cooling following the peak metamorphism, suggesting that the ~2.50 Ga metamorphism was most likely related to the intrusion and underplating of mantle-derived magmas. Collectively, the results of this study suggest that the underplating of mantle-derived magmas was most likely related to a mantle plume, which is favored to account for the significant Neoarchean crustal growth and the large-scale metamorphism at the end of Neoarchean in Shandong Province as well as the whole Eastern Block in the North China Craton.

Xiong, Hao, and 熊浩. "The feasibility of court mediation in today's southwest China : an empirical study of the grassroots courts in Yunnan province." Thesis, The University of Hong Kong (Pokfulam, Hong Kong), 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10722/197096.

Full text
Abstract:
Today’s legal system of China has faced many significant changes. One of the often mentioned challenges concerns the appropriate management and handling of an abundance of new and complex disputes. Due to the popularity of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Western countries, it began to draw people’s attention when designing a Chinese dispute resolution policy. With this fact being known and considering China’s domestic political climates and the Chinese practice of using non-confrontational means to solve disputes, one circle of scholars suggested that court mediation (fayuantiaojie, 法院调解) should be enhanced. In June 2009, this suggestion was adopted by the Supreme People’s Court. Concerning the challenges of courts handling disputes in recent years, the SPC has placed a priority on practice of court mediation. However, China’s situation differs from the West, and the existing scholarship lacks empirical research on court-connected ADR. This is especially true in southwest China. Thus, it is quite necessary for legal scholars to assess and examine the operation of court mediation in today’s southwest China in order to answer whether it is a feasible institutional arrangement in the southwest context. This will not only enhance our understanding of the nature and rationale of court-connected ADR at the intellectual level but will also perfect its performance in the future. The purpose of this research is to contribute an empirical study on court mediation and attempts to paint a more complicated and nuanced picture of ADR in southwest China’s context rather than simply copying Western legal narratives to explain China’s legal reality. More specifically, through empirically examining the process of court mediation and the implementation of the relevant policies in practice, this dissertation intends to 1) investigate how court mediation is carried out in southwest China’s grassroots courts in order to answer whether it is a feasible institutional arrangement in the southwest context as well as what the problems are in practice, if any,2) provide suggestions for clarifying and redesigning China’s mediation law in the future and introduce a regionalism-based paradigm to China’s legal studies and dispute resolution policy design as an alternative. Based on empirical studies in the grassroots courts of Yunnan, this dissertation argues that although court mediation now is driven by “politically correct pragmatism”, it is feasible in southwest grassroots China due to the social context and the social embedment of the locals. However, the current “Mediation First” policy is still problematic because it may over-simplify Chinese complexity in the dispute resolution domain and has gone far away from the spirit of ADR by pursuing political goals as its priority and overemphasizing mediation’s role. The way to solve the problem is not to simply or ideologically restrict or limit court mediation; alternatively, it is necessary to establish more straightforward and uncompromising rules to exclude ill-suited cases from being mediated in order to improve its performance. Now is also the time to re-examine China’s nationalized, generalized paradigm concerning both China’s legal constructions and scholarship, and attempt to open up a new regionalism-based paradigm when analyzing China’s legal issues.

Full text
Abstract:
Longmen Shan Mountain Belt is a prominent orogeny along the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau. Its current deformation has significant implications for the Cenozoic tectonics of the Tibetan plateau. The M=8 Wenchuan earthquake substantially ruptured the Longmen Shan mountain in 2008. Numerous tectonics and rheological implications are concluded by this event on crustal dynamics along the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau. Several high-resolution gravity surveys were conducted before and after the event to investigate the regional isostasy and crustal dynamics. From 2008 to 2011, four gravimetric surveys were carried out along two profiles across southern and northern Longmen Shan from the Sichuan Basin to the Songpan-Graze Terrane. The Bouguer gravity anomalies drop from -162 mGal to -431 mGal in the Aba Basin with a steep gradient of 0.84 mGal/km. There is a significant increase of crustal thickness from 40 km in the Sichuan to more than 60 km in the Tibetan plateau. Negative isostatic anomaly of -30 mGal over 150 km of the Songpan-Graze Terrane infers an over-compensation of excess crustal thickness up to 20 km. Hence, upward isostatic rebound is resulted and coupled with on-going crustal movement. Gravity values change significantly before and after the Wenchuan earthquake, ranging from -1.2 mGal to 0.7 mGal near the epicentral area. Significant thrust slip of 7.5m and normal slip of 4.5 m were simulated along the Beichuan fault and Wenchuan fault by an elastic dislocation theory. The co-existence of thrusting and normal faulting implies both compressional and extensional settings along Longmen Shan. The normal slip corroborates a large-scale crustal extension, lending support to a model with the inflation of lower crustal flow. The two-year post-seismic gravity variations were more than 0.1 mGal near the epicentral area. About 25% of them could be attributed to viscoelastic mantle relaxation. The dynamics topography along the eastern margin of the plateau is proposed to be a consequence of lower crustal flow squeezed by isostatic rebound and topographic load. The strong Yangtze Block is thought to obstruct the crustal flow horizontally and direct it to flow upward beneath Longmen Shan. The steep topography and seismicity along Longmen Shan are then resulted probably from the vertical stress induced in this upward flow.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis falls naturally into two parts . The first part is concerned with the level and trend of fertility in Huaibei Plain, Anhui province , China since 1950 and the second with the examination of some determinants of fertility decline . It makes use of data from the 1/1000 Survey of China which was conducted by the Family Planning Commission in 1982. The data used in this thesis are for one area in Anhui province , China , namely Huaibei Plain. In the first part , fertility transition in Huaibei Plain is examined . It is found that the greatest decline in marital fertility occurred among women aged 35+ under the influence of the family planning program. In the second part , some determinants of fertility decline are examined. Fertility decline among younger women (under age 30) is largely due to later age at marriage . Consequently , the nuptiality pattern of Huaibei Plain has changed from an early and universal marriage to a later and universal marriage pattern. Examination of current use of contraception suggests that the family planning program, in particular , the one - child policy (1979) , has been the major determinant in fertility decline. Fertility decline among older women (35+) is primarily due to contraceptive practice . The influence of the one-child policy is so strong that it has almost eliminated the differentials in contraceptive use by education and occupation under certain circumstances ; for example , for women who are under age 45 and have more than two children.

Abstract:
In Qing Dynasty, Chang’s family was one of the most famous merchants of the Shanxi ancient business. Chang’s Manor, which has a history of more than 200 years, stays as the most awarded civil building assembly among all the Shanxi compounds by its elaborate sculptures, wooden decorated archways, brick sculpted walls and many other art forms. Since 2001, Chang’s Manor has been commercialized for tourism purpose. Many “interesting stories” have been made up while lots of facts which are the real “people’s history” were left out and may be lost forever. This is also a common problem within many heritages which have been transformed into tourist attractions in China. And this arouses my research interests. In this dissertation, I would like to seek and tell the “true stories” from 1949 to 2001 in accordance with my conversation with the original habitants who have had real life experience of the original places. Surely, I will identify the real social value of Chang’s Manor through the interpretation of the true stories from local people.

Abstract:
With the high populations of the Qiang people (羌) living in Maoxian County (茂縣), Wenchuan (汶川), Li county (理縣)& Beichuan County (北川); the geomorphology and natural ecological environment were serious damaged in "5.12" Wenchuan earthquake. Many of the villages were destroyed or severely damaged; it brought a huge casualties and losses to the Qiang cultural. Natural ecosystems through natural and artificial repair after a certain period can make basic recovery. As a historical legacy of the Qiang village, due to the seismic requirement and the changed of modern life living standard, it is hard to rebuild the entire intangible cultural heritage. It is a very complex and important to focus on the content of the cultural reconstruction of Qiang’s community. Among most of the cultural rebuilt projects were most likely set up a new cultural museum or a cultural center to conserve the minority groups tangible heritage. This is a very passive way to display the Qiang’s traditional heritage. As time changes and technology advancement, Qiang people are not living isolated to the outer world. In another hand, they share and receive information from other ethnic such as Han and Tibetan. The county street market is the best place for them to interact with other group of people besides selling goods for living improvement. This thesis confers Qiang people’s traditional culture heritage and their community evolution to redevelop a new streetscape for local market and public leisure purpose. Taking the chance of develop from earthquake, up to 50% of the street side building can be demolished and partially refurnish. With landscape planning and design, this street will be reset and provide a enhance environment as a multi-cultural sharing platform.

Abstract:
The Hekou Group in the Kangdian region, SW Yangtze Block is a metavolcanic-metasedimentary succession hosting the giant Lala Fe-Cu-(Mo, REE) deposit. Mafic volcanic rocks of the Hekou Group and nearby gabbroic intrusions have identical zircon U-Pb ages of ~1700 Ma. The sedimentary and mafic rocks are suggested to have formed in an intra-continental rift, similar to those of the North Australian Craton. Such a similarity suggests that the Yangtze Block was likely linked with the North Australian Craton in the Columbia supercontinent during late Paleoproterozoic. Overlying the Hekou Group is a thick sedimentary sequence of the Julin Group containing basaltic layers with zircon U-Pb ages of ~1050 Ma. The basalts and other coeval igneous rocks in the region have geochemical affinity of within-plate rocks, representing a ~1.05-1.1 Ga rifting event. Occurrence of the within-plate rocks does not support existence of a Grenvillian orogenic belt in the region, and thus agrues against previous hypothesis that proposed the Yangtze Block to be located in the interior of the Rodinia supercontinent on the basis of the so-called Grenvillian orogenic belt. The Lala deposit contains 200 Mt of ores with an average grade of 13 wt.% Fe, 0.92 wt.% Cu, 0.018 wt.% Mo, 0.022 wt.% Co, 0.25 wt.% REE2O3 and 0.16 ppm Au, and is one of the largest IOCG deposits in the region. The ores are hosted mostly in meta-vocalnic rocks (albitite) and schists, and are characterized by abundant low-Ti magnetite with subordinate chalcopyrite, pyrite, molybdenite and REE minerals. The paragenetic sequence includes Stage I of Na-alteration, Stage II of Fe mineralization, Stage III of Cu-Mo-REE mineralization, Stage IV of chalcopyrite-pyrite-calcite veins and Stage V of hematite-calcite-quartz veins. Molybdenite of Stage III has a Re-Os isotopic age of 1086 ± 8 Ma, similar to U-Pb ages of the primary allanite as 1067 ± 41 Ma, suggesting that mineralization of the Lala deposit is coeval with the ~1.05-1.1 Ga within-plate magmatism in the region. The secondary allanite has U-Pb ages of 880-850 Ma, comparable to Ar-Ar and Pb-Pb ages of undeformed Stage IV and V veins, representing a younger hydrothermal event. C-O-S isotopes suggest that the Fe and Cu mineralization stages (II and III) at Lala have formed from high temperature magmatic-hydrothermal fluids (385-430ºC). However, compositions of fluid inclusions and minerals demonstrate that the Fe and Cu mineralizing fluids have different compositions. Strontium isotopic compositions of apatite and calcite suggest that the Fe mineralizing fluid has formed from magmatic fluids interacted with late Paleoproterozoic host rocks, whereas the Cu mineralizing fluid with much higher 87Sr/86Sr ratios has possibly involved magmatic fluids that have interacted with older basement beneath. Close association of monazite-bearing apatite, Cu-sulfides and REE-minerals at Lala suggests that REE mobilization and mineralization is genetically related to the Cu mineralizing fluid. This study suggests that the Cu mineralizing fluid contains Cl-, K, CO2, F-, PO43- and CO32- with low Na activity, and is thus responsible for mobilization, transportation and deposition of LREEs in the Lala deposit.

Abstract:
This study analyzes the fertility change in Shaanxi Province, China and estimates the impact of family planning programs on fertility decline during the 1972-1984. Data used come from the 1985 Regional In-Depth Fertility Survey, supplemented by service statistics of family planning. Fertility change in Shaanxi is analyzed in terms of children ever born to married women, parity progression ratio, age— specific fertility rates, age— specific marital fertility rates and total fertility rates, as well as cohort-period fertility rates. The results confirm a substantial fertility decline in the study areas, particularly among women aged 30 and over and during the 9 years prior to the 1985 survey. This study reveals very high levels of knowledge (5.2 methods per women) and use (currently 69 percent) of contraceptives, suggesting that contraceptive practice plays a key role in reducing fertility among married women in Shaanxi. Of all methods used, 92.6 percent are provided by family planning programs, mainly the more efficient methods, the IUD and sterilization. The study also finds that under strong family planning programs, contraceptive use among married women is irrespective of educational level, Three evaluative methods have been employed to assess the program impact on fertility decline: standardization approach, component projection approach II, and the prevalence model. It is estimated that, of all births averted during the period 1972-1984, three-quarters had been averted by women aged 25 — 39 at the time of the survey, and about 80 percent had been averted by using the IUD and sterilization.

Abstract:
From the establishment of the Ming to the fall of the Qing (1368--1911), the social and cultural scene of the Chinese countryside was greatly transformed. Lineages became the dominant social organization in many areas. Local temples became a familiar part of the rural landscape. Local culture was increasingly exposed to the influence of regional culture and gentry culture with the proliferation of market towns, the development of the printing industry and the rise of literacy. By investigating the history of ritual specialists and their rituals in a sub-county area in southeast China, this thesis shows how these social and cultural transformations took place and how the local population experienced them. Lisheng or masters of ceremonies, the focus of this thesis, played and still play an important role in the local social and symbolic life. Either along with or in the absence of other ritual specialists, they guided the laity through ritual procedures to communicate with ancestors, gods, and the dead. These rituals, and also the related liturgical texts, were the outcome of social and cultural transformations in the late imperial period. Through a detailed discussion of the history of the three important local institutions that were closely related to lisheng and their rituals, namely, lineages, community compacts, and temple networks, the thesis shows the limitations of the elitist interpretation of late imperial cultural transformations. Cultural integration and gentrification were without doubt important aspects of these processes. However, both may have oversimplified the complexity of the processes and exaggerate the influence of high culture. Cultural hybridization, the process in which elements from different cultural traditions were synthesized into a new, constantly changing cultural mosaic, provides a multipolar, interactional, and thus more complex approach to our understanding of cultural processes in late imperial China.
