Two undescribed species of Scopimera are herein described. Scopimera sheni sp. nov. from Qingdao, represents the fourth species of the genus to be recognized from North China. Scopimera philippinensis sp. nov. is the first record of the genus from the Philippines. Morphologically both new species belong to the “normal form” Scopimera (sensu Kemp 1919). Amongst other characters, each can be distinguished by its diagnostic male first gonopod. Mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene sequences showed two distinct clades. An East Asia group (Chinese coasts, Japan, Korea and Taiwan) consisting of S. globosa De Haan, 1835, S. ryukyuensis Wong, Chan et Shih, 2010, S. sheni sp. nov., S. longidactyla Shen, 1932 and S. curtelsona (= S. cutelsoma) Shen, 1936; and a Southeast Asia group consisting of the closely related S. philippinensis sp. nov. and S. intermedia Balss, 1934. A dichotomous key is provided for all “normal forms” of Scopimera species.

Abstract:
The concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are on the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) priority pollutant list, were studied in ten different soil samples from Shengli Oil Field, China. The total PAHs concentrations in the sampled soils attained 1214.9–2965.1 ng/g (2159.6 ng/g on average). The highest total PAHs concentration was in the soil with a huge content of oil sludge, while the lowest was in fine soil environment areas. The soil contamination with PAHs in the study areas was classified as severe. The major pollutants were naphthalene, phenathrene, fluorine (Flu), pyrene (Pyr), while the detected concentration of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), benzo(b)fluoranthene was relatively low. Among the 16 kinds of PAHs, the concentration increased in the order: 6 rings &lt; 5 rings &lt; 4 rings &lt; 2 rings &lt; 3 rings. The ratios of Flu/(Flu + Pyr) and indeno benzene(1,2,3-c,d)pyrene (IP)/(IP + BaP) were 0.46–0.48, and 0.36–0.64, respectively. Our results suggest that the main sources of PAHs were petroleum extraction and petroleum combustion. In addition, a small amount of PAHs originated from combustion of grass, woods, and coal.

Abstract:
<p>In order to comprehend the many aspects of social and cultural historiography of traditional China, it is imperative to recognize who are the main actors. In traditional Chinese society, there is a significant category known as the Chinese gentry, or the shenshi 紳士 in Mandarin. They were known as the Chinese scholar-official class who administered the traditional Chinese dynastic government system since more than two-thousand years ago until the abolishment of the system in 1911. The Chinese gentry emerged from the intellectuals who became officials by going through a special, open-recruited, educational system; a system that enabled every person from any strata in traditional society to enroll. However, their office and titles could not be passed to their offspring through birthright. All ministers, governors, magistrates, intellectuals, poets, men of letters, and also the metropolitan and local informal leaders emerged from this class. Chinese histories in the times of the various dynasties are decorated by the roles and actions of this shenshi.</p>

Abstract:
Background. The efficacy and safety of combined treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using Shenyi capsules and platinum-based chemotherapy were comprehensively evaluated. Methods. A computer-based search was used to identify reports on clinical randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on this combined treatment for NSCLC from the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), VIP, China Biomedical (CBM), and Wanfang Data electronic databases. The databases were searched from their start to February 2020. The quality of the included studies was evaluated and then crosschecked by two independent evaluators. A meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan5.3. Results. A total of 27 RCTs involving 2,663 patients were included in the meta-analysis, including 1,380 and 1,283 patients in the treatment and control groups, respectively. The results of the meta-analysis showed that, compared to platinum-based chemotherapy alone, the 1-year survival rate (relative risk (RR) = 1.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.10, 1.47], P < 0.01 ), 2-year survival rate (RR = 1.35, 95% CI [1.10, 1.65], P < 0.01 ), objective tumour remission rate (RR = 1.52, 95% CI [1.35, 1.71], P < 0.01 ), and body CD4+/CD8+ ratio (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.12, 95% CI [0.07, 0.17], P < 0.01 ) were increased for the combined treatment of NSCLC using Shenyi capsules and platinum-based chemotherapy; moreover, quality of life was also improved (RR = 2.09, 95%CI [1.75, 2.50], P < 0.01 ) and it reduced leukocyte toxicity (RR = 0.49, 95%CI [0.39, 0.63], P < 0.01 ), haemoglobin toxicity (RR = 0.48, 95% CI [0.28, 0.81], P < 0.01 ), platelet toxicity (RR = 0.44, 95% CI [0.28, 0.70], P < 0.01 ), vomiting reaction (RR = 0.60, 95% CI [0.45, 0.78], P < 0.01 ), and serum vascular endothelial growth factor level (SMD = −63.67, 95% CI [−67.59, −59.75], P < 0.01 ). Conclusions. The treatment of NSCLC using Shenyi capsules together with routine platinum-based chemotherapy could enhance short- and long-term efficacy, improve patient quality of life, alleviate toxicity and side-effects of platinum-based chemotherapeutic drugs, boost body immune function, and inhibit tumour neovascularisation. These findings require further validation in large-sample, high-quality RCTs.

Abstract:
Intertidal mudflat crabs of the genus Metaplax H. Milne Edwards, 1852 (Crustacea: Brachyura: Varunidae) from China, Taiwan, and northern Vietnam are taxonomically revised by morphological and molecular evidence. These crabs show sexual dimorphism and morphological variation of a considerable range in the infraorbital ridge, one of the primary features previously used for species identification. In this study, four species were identified from the region: M. elegans De Man, 1888; M. longipes Stimpson, 1858; M. sheni Gordon, 1930; and M. tredecim Tweedie, 1950. Based on the results of the morphological examination, and as confirmed by molecular evidence from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI), taxonomic confusion surrounding M. longipes was resolved, and M. takahasii Sakai, 1939, is considered a junior synonym of M. longipes. The geographical distribution of Metaplax longipes extends along the shores of China, north to Jiangsu, whereas the Southeast Asian M. tredecim was newly recorded from northern Vietnam and Hong Kong.

Abstract:
Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a world-wide metabolic disease with no cure from drugs and treatment. In China, The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbal formulations have been used to treat T2DM for centuries. Methods: In this study, we proposed a formula called ShenQi Compound (SQC), which has been used in clinical therapeutics in China for several years. We evaluated the effect of SQC in a spontaneous diabetic rat model (GK rats) by detecting a series of blood indicators and performing histological observations. Meanwhile, the gene microarray and RT-qPCR experiments were used to explore the molecular mechanism of SQC treatment. In addition, western medicine, sitagliptin was employed as a comparison. Results: The results indicated that SQC and sitagliptin could effectively improve the serum lipid (blood Total Cholesterol (TC) and blood Triglycerides (TG)), hormone levels (serum insulin (INS), Glucagon (GC) and Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 (GLP-1)), alleviated the inflammatory response (hypersensitive C-Reactive Protein (hsCRP)), blood glucose fluctuation (Mean Blood Glucose (MBG), standard deviation of blood glucose (SDBG) and Largest Amplitude of plasma Glucose Excursions (LAGE)), pancreatic tissue damage and vascular injury for T2DM. Compared with sitagliptin, SQC achieved a better effect on blood glucose fluctuation (p<0.01). Meanwhile, the gene microarray and RT-qPCR experiments indicated that SQC and sitagliptin may improve the T2DM through affecting the biological functions related to apoptosis and circadian rhythm. Moreover, SQC might be able to influence the mTOR signaling pathway by regulating Pik3r1, Ddit4 expression. Conclusion: All these results indicate that SQC is an effective therapeutic drug on T2DM. Notably, SQC presents an obvious blood glucose fluctuation-preventing ability, which might be derived from the regulation of the mTOR signaling pathway.

Abstract:
Efforts at legal reform in China under the banner of the socialist legal system (shehui zhuyi fazhi) represent an attempt by the post-Mao regime to rest legitimacy in part on an ideology of formal law that complements the regime's efforts at economic reform. While the Party has not abandoned its reliance on the conceit that it represents the forces of historical revolution, the establishment of the socialist legal system is aimed to some extent at addressing a more immediate challenge of retaining legitimacy in the eyes of a populace for whom abstract notions of historical determinacy have little meaning. Proponents of reform have linked these abstract and practical aspects of legitimacy by asserting that legal reform is a requirement of the specific stage of historical development in which China now finds itself.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Membranous nephropathy (MN) is the most common cause of nephrotic syndrome (NS) in adults, accounting for about 20.0% of all NS cases. With an increasing prevalence, especially in the elderly, it has received great attention in Asia. Summary: Recently, the prevalence of idiopathic MN (IMN) has significantly increased among the elderly people in Asia and other places in the world. Although the exact mechanism of IMN remains unveiled, the identification of new antigens such as PLA2R and THSD7A has greatly enhanced our understanding of its pathogenesis. However, consensus has not yet been reached for the treatment of IMN in Asia. For example, there are many choices of immunosuppressive agents, including corticosteroid monotherapy, corticosteroids combined with cytotoxic agents [such as alkylating agents, calcineurin inhibitors or mycophenolate mofetil (MMF)] or traditional Chinese medicine (triptolide, Shenqi and other Chinese herbal soups). Patients with IMN in Asia often have a favorable prognosis, and progression to end-stage renal disease is relatively uncommon compared to other populations. Key Messages: The prevalence of MN has significantly increased in the last years. The treatment strategies for IMN have not reached consensus in Asia. Traditional Chinese medicine is generally preferred by the Chinese, and compelling results have been reported recently. Facts from East and West: (1) The prevalence of IMN is increasing worldwide, particularly in elderly patients, and has been reported in 20.0-36.8% of adult-onset NS cases. The presence of anti-PLA2R antibodies in serum or PLA2R on renal biopsy is the most predictive feature for the diagnosis of IMN and is used in both the East and West; however, appropriate screening to rule out secondary causes should still be performed. (2) Several observational (nonrandomized) Asian studies indicate a good response to corticosteroids alone in IMN patients, although no randomized controlled trials have been done in Asian membranous patients at high risk of progression. Corticosteroid monotherapy has failed in randomized controlled trial studies in Western countries and is therefore not recommended. (3) Cyclophosphamide is the most commonly prescribed alkylating agent in Europe and China. Also, chlorambucil is still used in some Western countries, particularly in Europe. In North America, calcineurin inhibitors are the more common first-line treatment. (4) Cyclosporine is predominantly used as monotherapy in North America, although KDIGO (Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes) and Japanese guidelines still recommend a combination with low-dose corticosteroids. Clinical studies both in Asia and Europe showed no or little effects of monotherapy with MMF compared to standard therapies. (5) There are encouraging data from nonrandomized Western studies for the use of rituximab and a few small studies using adrenocorticotropic hormone. Clinical trials are ongoing in North America to confirm these observations. These drugs are rarely used in Asia. (6) A Chinese study reported that 36% of IMN patients suffered from venous thromboembolism versus 7.3% in a North American study. Prophylactic anticoagulation therapy is usually added to IMN patients with a low risk of bleeding in both Eastern and Western countries. (7) The Chinese traditional medicine herb triptolide, which might have podocyte-protective properties, is used in China to treat IMN. An open-label, multicenter, randomized controlled trial showed that Shenqi, a mixture of 13 herbs, was superior to corticosteroids plus cyclophosphamide therapy to restore epidermal growth factor receptor in IMN patients, although proteinuria improvement was equal in the two groups. Importantly, Shenqi treatment induced no severe adverse events while standard therapy did.

Results: The results indicated that SQC could effectively improve polydipsia, polyphagia and weight loss caused by diabetes as well as pancreatic tissue damage and vascular injury for T2DM. Meanwhile, the gene microarray experiments indicated that SQC may improve the T2DM by affecting the biological functions related to detection of chemical stimulus involved in sensory perception of smell, G-protein coupled receptor signaling pathway, cytoplasmic translation. In addition, SQC presented curative effect by the regulated function associated with translation, while metformin presented curative effect by the regulated function associated coagulation. Conclusion: SQC is an effective therapeutic drug on T2DM, and presents curative effect by regulated function associated with translation.

Abstract:
Objective. In China, ginsenoside Rg3 is often used in combination with chemotherapy to treat digestive system cancer. We here performed a meta-analysis and systematic review to provide a much needed high-quality evaluation of the efficacy and safety of ginsenoside Rg3 combined with chemotherapy in these cancers. Materials and Methods. The PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and Weipu (VIP) databases were searched. All randomized controlled trials (RCTs) concerning ginsenoside Rg3 combined with chemotherapy for digestive system cancer were selected. Dichotomous data were expressed as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). The methodological quality of the included studies was evaluated according to the Cochrane evidence-based medicine system, and the statistical analyses were performed with Review Manager 5.3 and STATA 12.0 software. In addition, the Grades of Recommendation Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach was used to rate the quality of the evidence. Trial sequential analysis (TSA) was used to evaluate information size and treatment benefits. Results. A total of 18 trials comprising 1531 patients were included in this study. The results revealed that the trials were of sufficient standard to draw reliable conclusions that ginsenoside Rg3 combined with chemotherapy could improve the objective response rate (ORR; OR 2.17, 95% CI 1.72–2.73), disease control rate (DCR; OR 2.83, 95% CI 2.02–3.96), 1-year survival rate (SR; OR = 2.33, 95% CI = 1.24–4.37), Karnofsky Performance Scale (KPS; OR 2.67, 95% CI 1.76–4.03), gastrointestinal dysfunction (OR 0.44, 95% CI 0.31–0.61), and the decline of leucocyte count (OR 0.28, 95% CI 0.21–0.38). Conclusion. Ginsenoside Rg3 combined with chemotherapy can improve the clinical efficacy and alleviate treatment-induced side effects for digestive system cancer.

Abstract: As a traditional term used in ancient Chinese, shiehwui <graphic href="CUL2020k_11_fig0001.jpg"/><graphic href="CUL2020k_11_fig0002.jpg"/> mainly implied the gatherings and meetings related to folk festivals for the worship of and making offerings to shie <graphic href="CUL2020k_11_fig0003.jpg"/>, the gods of soil. The manifestation of shiehwui frequently was the target of condescension or outright condemnation from the government or Confucian elites. During the early dissemination of the western concept of society into China, one factor that facilitated its entry was the Christian missionaries’ knowledge of traditional Chinese shie and hwui <graphic href="CUL2020k_11_fig0004.jpg"/>, especially the secret societies, which they applied to their translations from English into Chinese. When the modern concept of shakai (written as <graphic href="CUL2020k_11_fig0005.jpg"/><graphic href="CUL2020k_11_fig0006.jpg"/>, the same Chinese characters), formulated in Japan, was imported into Chinese at the turn of the 20th century, it became blended with the old word of shiehwui, and found a connection to the daily life experience of the lower classes in traditional China. As a result, the new concept of shehui in modern China possesses two kinds of connotations. On the one hand, it points toward the new direction of historical changes. On the other hand, it still retains the associations of condescension, dissatisfaction and anxiety that inform the perspective of the ruling class toward this term.

Abstract:
Background. Immunosuppression is a well-recognised complication of chemotherapy in cancer patients. We assemble the clinical evidence that SQI, an adjuvant drug for lung cancer and gastric cancer which was widely prescribed in China, interventions could increase objective tumour response and regulate immunity in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Methods. We undertook a systemic review of the clinical data from randomised controlled trials up to September 2015 in which a SQI intervention was compared with a control arm in patients undergoing conventional chemotherapy. Revman 5.0 Software was used for the data analysis. Results. 49 randomised controlled trials were included in the systematic review. The meta-analysis results demonstrated that the SQI intervention with conventional chemotherapy exhibited better therapeutic efficacy than the conventional chemotherapy group with a statistically significant higher objective tumour response. Cotreatment with SQI could enhance NK, CD3+, CD4+ level, and CD4+/CD8+ ratio comparing with the conventional chemotherapy group. Conclusions. The conclusions of this review might suggest a high risk of bias due to the low quality and the limitation of cancer types in the included trials. A more reliable conclusion regarding the immunoregulation of SQI could be reached based on more trials of higher quality.

Abstract:
This article revisits Xiao Hong’s Field of Life and Death (Shengsi chang 生死場, 1935) and Market Street (Shangshi jie商市街, 1936) against sources from the periodical press to explore how Xiao Hong’s works speak back to discourses on “rubbish” (feiwu 廢物), a slur that was frequently used to refer to disabled people, to people of lower social status, and to women during the Republican period. In particular, I explore how the category of feiwu lays bare processes of marginalisation and dehumanisation, contextualising literary excerpts against New Life Movement slogans, satirical cartoons, and homemaking or hygienist press articles. I show how Xiao Hong’s works build through the category of feiwu a counter-discourse bearing on the representational entanglements of gender, class and disability, as materialised through animals (in Field of Life and Death) and through objects (in Market Street). In doing so, I contribute to a conceptual history of feiwu, and I extend existing scholarship concerned with literary representations of disability in China into the Republican period – a budding subfield that has so far mainly focused on works produced since the foundation of the People’s Republic in 1949.

Abstract:
Chinese herbal medicine (CHM), which includes herbal slices and proprietary products, is widely used in China. Shenqi Dihuang (SQDH) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formula with ingredients that affect tumor growth. Despite recent advances in prognosis, patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) cannot currently receive curative treatment. The present study aimed to explore the potential target genes closely associated with SQDH. The gene expression data for SQDH and RCC were obtained from the TCMSP and TCGA databases. The SQDH-based prognostic prediction model reveals a strong correlation between RCC and SQDH. In addition, the immune cell infiltration analysis indicated that SQDH might be associated with the immune response of RCC patients. Based on this, we successfully built the prognostic prediction model using SQDH-related genes. The results demonstrated that CCND1 and NR3C2 are closely associated with the prognosis of RCC patients. Finally, the pathways enrichment analysis revealed that response to oxidative stress, cyclin binding, programmed cell death, and immune response are the most enriched pathways in CCND1. Furthermore, transcription regulator activity, regulation of cell population proliferation, and cyclin binding are closely associated with the NR3C2.

Abstract:
The article follows up on the series of general theoretical works by Oleg E. Nepomnin (1935-2020) published in previous issues of the Oriental Courier. [Непомнин, 2019, 2020, 2021a, 2021b]. Oleg E. Nepomnin, a specialist in Chinese studies and Orientalism, was one of the most prominent theorists of Oriental societies. The author adheres to the concept of “class-state” which was formed in traditional China and determined all spheres of Chinese society, and in the Qing era. Society was built on an integral combination of grassroots or “small” “universal” collectivity: the Great Empire, the state. Such a system was characterized by the weakness of horizontal ties of class, class, social stratum, stratum, with the dominance of vertical ties. Its basis was the “primary unit — supreme power” link. The absorption of everyone in traditional China by the “personal” micro-community and the cellularity of society led to the underdevelopment and internal fragmentation of estates and social groups in the face of the all-powerful state of the eastern despotism. In medieval China the “class-state” was a major economic phenomenon. It was large-scale both in terms of the impact of officialdom on the economic life of the country and in a narrower sense. “Class-state” had its own sub-sector of public land tenure. In addition to this, the bureaucracy’s immediate sphere of domination included a second huge subsector — the tax-paying peasant lands. In the North and Manchuria, the economic system was predominantly “state” with the increased role of taxes and officials, while in the South and Central China it was predominantly private and “rental” with the special role of land rent and debt bondage. The “class-state” by means of the bureaucracy and the shenshi class ensured the integrity and unity of both regions. The “class-state” received annually in the form of taxes, duties and other taxation 40 % of the entire mass of real and “conditional” grain withdrawn from the village — over 13 % of China’s total production. About 52 % of this amount was rent-taxes on the taxed peasants, more than 38 % were levied on the private rented sector, and more than 9 % — on the government-dependent farmers.

Abstract:
Abstract The Belt and Road Initiative proclaimed by President Xi in 2013, a strategy developed by the Chinese government, is very important to China but is not confined to China. In order for the initiative to be successful it needs to be embraced by the countries on the terrestrial and maritime route indicated in the plan. In the late 1980s Deng Xiaoping proposed to integrate Socialism with Chinese Characteristics (Zhongguo Tese Shehui Zhuyi, ) into global capitalism and in the 1990s the Jiang Zemin leadership initiated the Going out policy (Zouchuqu Zhanlue, ) – the current Belt and Road Initiative is China’s continuation in implementing those policies into actual deeds. China’s accession to WTO in 2001 marked China’s full integration into the global economy and since then the People’s Republic of China (PRC) has become the largest trading partner for more than 180 countries. The Xi-Li administration has been extremely proactive since it was established in 2012; from that year on, Chinese behavior in international affairs has gained an ever-growing role as a forger of economic and diplomatic ties between countries. The primary example of this behavior is the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). As every serious foreign policy plan, the BRI is an accumulation of various other initiatives. For example, the cooperation mechanism “16+1”, with which the PRC has approached Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC), can be integrated under the BRI. This paper analizes the “16+1” China-CEEC cooperation mechanism in the context of the bigger BRI initiative, and tries to comprehend the economic and political factors intertwined with its implementation.

Abstract:
In this paper, we will investigate the re-emergence of Confucianism in contemporary China as a complex intersection of political, cultural, educational and popular perspectives. This resurgence is neither a kind of Chinese Neoclassicism nor a nostalgic backwardness, instead it is the emblem of the new China’s identity. Confucius and Confucianism, violently despised as the remains of feudalism since the May Fourth Movement and during Maoism, are nowadays a fertile source for the fulfilment of “Socialism with Chinese characteristics” (zhongguo tese shehui zhuyi 中国特色社会主义) on both the educational and political levels. We carry out the investigation in three steps: 1. The political rehabilitation of Confucianism as part of the “Chinese dream” (zhongguo meng 中国梦); 2. The common social perception of Confucianism and tradition as a shared and unavoidable background; 3. The definition of two possible Confucianisms (namely New Confucianism and Political Confucianism) and their possible influences on Chinese society and moral education. Our conclusions will deal with Chinese cultural soft power, and the shaping of a new Confucian identity based on both modernity and tradition.
