Cao, Siyang. "Crafting elastic masculinity : formations of shenti, intimacy and kinship among young men in China." Thesis, University of York, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20182/.

Full text
Abstract:
Under the ever-deepening transformations in contemporary China, traditional gender relations have been reshaped, but elements of patriarchy informed by the legacy of Confucianism still linger. These intricately interwoven forces have exerted a great impact on the gendered lives of the young generation. This research aims to examine young men’s views of Chinese manhood and how they construct and negotiate masculinities in their everyday lives. I conducted 30 semi-structured in-depth interviews with Chinese men aged between 22 and 32, who are mostly ordinary men in the middle social stratum in Shanghai and Shenyang. I regard Chinese men as actively negotiating their identities within particular stages of their life course. Overall, this thesis is informed by perspectives of relational selfhood and Confucian notions of the relational, reflexive, and embodied self that is an ongoing process of becoming. I bring indigenous concepts and cultural repertoires into critical dialogue with global and leading sociological theories of individualisation and reflexivity. Based on my analyses, I introduce and develop the concept of ‘elastic masculinity’. Specifically, I argue that the masculinity of ordinary young men is flexible, adaptable and accommodating. However, the term elastic masculinity also illustrates that it is limited by the availability of resources, structural constraints, cultural traditions and diverse personal relationships. Thus, elastic masculinity is an appropriate metaphor and an important concept to understand Chinese young men’s active engagement with China’s global modernity, increasing individualisation, shifting gender values and local realities.

Chang, Su-Chen. "Improvised great ages : the creating of Qingming shengshi." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/44289.

Full text
Abstract:
From the Ming to the Qing dynasty, Qingming shanghe tu was among the paintings most frequently copied by professional painters and most often collected and viewed by urban residents, merchants, scholar officials and nobles. Over one hundred copies are extant. Modern scholars have disregarded these paintings, considering them not as “original works” but as mere copies and/or forgeries after Zhang Zeduan or Qiu Ying. This thesis proves their value by showing that though based on earlier works, Qingming painters created distinctive paintings that visualized pre-modern viewers’ various conceptions of a “great age,” an ideal society from the traditional Chinese perspective—Qingming Shengshi. Through comparisons of the earliest Qingming scroll by Zhang Zeduan of the Song dynasty and six selected Qingming paintings from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, my thesis shows that later painters reinterpreted the subject matter, copied and modified original motifs, and added new motifs drawn from contemporary life experiences and concerns. That is, these painters created new paintings using the title and structure of the well-known Zhang Zeduan scroll. Many Ming-Qing viewers stated that the Qingming scrolls were portrayals of a prosperous age. My analysis shows that themes in these paintings relate closely to the economic success and social changes in this period. In other words, painters and patrons extracted elements of the prosperity and cultural transformations of their age to design paintings based on the notion of Qingming shengshi. The variety of these scrolls and responses via inscriptions demonstrate that people from various backgrounds and different times and places held diverse views of an ideal world. Analysis of the six paintings reveals that over time this ideal world grew from a smaller prosperous economy to a much larger one, and changed from one where humble customs were followed to a much more luxurious, unrestrained and fashion-conscious way of living. Despite these changes, certain conservative ideas were preserved. Such traits demonstrate that people’s view of a great age was a dynamic conjunction of various conventions and new fashions, and lead us to believe that this was a new mode of visual cultural production: a model of improvisation.

Abstract:

FORCONI, MARIKO'. "The Indonesian coelacanth transcriptome sheds light on tetrapod evolution." Doctoral thesis, Università Politecnica delle Marche, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/11566/242894.

Full text
Abstract:
Latimeria menadoensis is one of the two extant species of coelacanth, lobe-finned fish representing the link between teleosts and tetrapods. Thanks to the slow evolutionary rate of Latimeria genome, it provides a snapshot of the molecular past of the earliest Sarcopterygian forms, the lineage to which tetrapods belong. This thesis presents six peer-reviewed papers concerning the coelacanth as the whole genome sequencing project of Latimeria chalumnae (the African congener of L. menadoensis) and the reconstruction of liver and testis transcriptome of the Indonesian coelacanth. The transcriptome project of L. menadoensis revealed to be of pivotal importance for the annotation of the African species genome taking part to a broad international effort and made use of the most modern sequencing techniques. Four aspects were focused thanks to the transcriptome: - The regulatory network leading to sex determination and sex differentiation. In order to provide evolutionary insight in the ancestral network, molecular and evolutionary characterization of 33 genes and transcripts in Latimeria was performed. - Vitellogenin genes characterization in Latimeria and their phylogenetic analyses to accomplish a better understanding of the evolutionary history of this gene family. - The purine catabolism pathway that underwent a progressive shortening during the evolution of land vertebrates. In order to evaluate possible pre-adaptations to terrestrialization in Latimeria, the sequences of the genes involved have been phylogenetically and microsyntenically analyzed. - The analysis of transcriptional activity of transposable elements that allowed to record an unexpected molecular dynamicity and the questioning of the slow evolutionary genome theorized for the coelacanths. Overall the transcriptome of the Indonesian coelacanth sheds light on many aspects of this extraordinary creature, allows new insights on the pre-adaptation events heading in the water-toland transition, and more important has proved (and still proves) to be a powerful tool to understand the evolution of Sarcopterygians.

Wu, Sheng-Tang. "Knowledge discovery using pattern taxonomy model in text mining." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 2007. https://eprints.qut.edu.au/16675/1/Sheng-Tang_Wu_Thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In the last decade, many data mining techniques have been proposed for fulfilling various knowledge discovery tasks in order to achieve the goal of retrieving useful information for users. Various types of patterns can then be generated using these techniques, such as sequential patterns, frequent itemsets, and closed and maximum patterns. However, how to effectively exploit the discovered patterns is still an open research issue, especially in the domain of text mining. Most of the text mining methods adopt the keyword-based approach to construct text representations which consist of single words or single terms, whereas other methods have tried to use phrases instead of keywords, based on the hypothesis that the information carried by a phrase is considered more than that by a single term. Nevertheless, these phrase-based methods did not yield significant improvements due to the fact that the patterns with high frequency (normally the shorter patterns) usually have a high value on exhaustivity but a low value on specificity, and thus the specific patterns encounter the low frequency problem. This thesis presents the research on the concept of developing an effective Pattern Taxonomy Model (PTM) to overcome the aforementioned problem by deploying discovered patterns into a hypothesis space. PTM is a pattern-based method which adopts the technique of sequential pattern mining and uses closed patterns as features in the representative. A PTM-based information filtering system is implemented and evaluated by a series of experiments on the latest version of the Reuters dataset, RCV1. The pattern evolution schemes are also proposed in this thesis with the attempt of utilising information from negative training examples to update the discovered knowledge. The results show that the PTM outperforms not only all up-to-date data mining-based methods, but also the traditional Rocchio and the state-of-the-art BM25 and Support Vector Machines (SVM) approaches.

Using the Mohr Site as a case study, this project examines the role of pottery in Shenks Ferry mortuary features. Following an analysis of the mortuary pottery, the resulting information is compared with pottery from the general site assemblage as well as with descriptions of pottery from other Shenks Ferry sites. In addition, an inventory of the Mohr Site grave good assemblage has been created. The assemblage at the Mohr site is especially rich and is particularly noteworthy given the nature and number of the burials discovered; no other current collection has as much variety or quantity as is seen at this site. The pottery recovered from Mohr exhibits characteristics typical of pottery found at other Shenks Ferry Sites and in other Shenks Ferry burials. The ceramic evidence challenges the traditional assumption that the Mohr site is a transitional Lancaster-Funk Phase site. Likewise, the length of time this site was occupied is also debatable. Mortuary vessels at Mohr are predominately associated with extended burials oriented to the east. There are also correlations between mortuary vessels types and age and sex. Possible connections between other grave goods and age, sex, and body position and between body position and season of interment are also discussed. Additional research employing methods such as residue analysis to compare information regarding the contents of the mortuary and non-mortuary Mohr Site pottery as well as further evidence produced by additional excavations or more in-depth analysis of current grave material collections will provide further insight into Shenks Ferry mortuary ritual and is necessary in order to fully understand this site and its place in the chronology of the Shenks Ferry Complex.

Full text
Abstract:
The three writers of our thesis corpus are very often associated by the critics, and their fiction writing considered from the point of view of their origin – the three women are Indo-Mauritian – and of their predilection for representing the subordinate black woman. Indeed the research areas of this thesis – that embraces the whole of the three works of fiction – tackle the essential matter of the status of the oppressed woman in a patriarcal context, itself anchored into the insular Indo-Mauritian community. However these inescapable enlightening tools fit in a more systematic analysis of the poetics in their novels in order for these tools not to be defined by categories both external to the writing project and restrictive, but appreciated on an aesthetic level that would analyse their literary qualities more than the originality of their origin and their « French language character ». The words of the subject, which is sometimes looked down upon, – the genre of the novel always being suspicious, all the more if written by contemporary women from overseas –, should reveal the wealth and originality of each of our women writers. What is their story-telling like ? How could we define their style ? How do they deal with their literary legacy ? What of their link with reality ? How do they fit in the double literary field of their origin and their writing language : the Mauritian field on the one hand, the French on the other ? These research directions have been explored by carrying out both the contextualization and the analysis of the novels of the three writers, linking socio-historical and internal, more strictly literary, analysis of the texts. First of all, the corpus lies within the framework of the History of Mauritius, being the framework of the great majority of the novels. It enables to understand the choice of the written language as well as the presence of multilingualism in the works. It explains the development and the central position of French culture that allowed the creation of a Mauritian literary field, mainly in French, to which our three writers belong. Insularity is also an essential element as regards the problematic of the feminine characters as well as the literary representation of the island. Indeed these writers must position themselves vis-a-vis its exotic representation, and the detropicalization which has been insisted upon is not their only answer. This analytical north/south axis is enriched by a south/south axis, through the appreciation of the relationship between Mauritius and India since the Indo-Mauritian community has partly influenced the Mauritian landscape. Our writers oppose this rooting in an imported, compulsory tradition, which creates an island within the island. This refusal of communitarianism goes hand in hand with the defense of hybridity carried by the feminine voices. It lies both within the relationship between the characters and the poetic of the novels through the mix of genres, the voices, and a rich intertextuality. Thus the place of the feminine in our corpus does not amount to the representation of the oppressed southern colored woman. It questions in a more complex way the Mauritian society and further, the post-colonial world to which north and south belong

Abstract:
Context. Irregular satellites of Jupiter with their highly eccentric, inclined and distant orbits suggest that their capture took place after the giant planet migration. Aims. We aim to improve our understanding of the surface composition of irregular satellites of Jupiter to gain insight into a narrow time window when our solar system was forming. Methods. We observed three Jovian irregular satellites, Himalia (JVI), Elara (JVII), and Carme (JXI), using a medium-resolution 0.8-5.5 mu m spectrograph, SpeX on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF). Using a linear spectral unmixing model we have constrained the major mineral phases on the surface of these three bodies. Results. Our results confirm that the surface of Himalia (JVI), Elara (JVII), and Carme (JXI) are dominated by opaque materials such as those seen in carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Our spectral modeling of NIR spectra of Himalia and Elara confirm that their surface composition is the same and magnetite is the dominant mineral. A comparison of the spectral shape of Himalia with the two large main C-type asteroids, Themis (D similar to 176 km) and Europa (D similar to 352 km), suggests surface composition similar to Europa. The NIR spectrum of Carme exhibits blue slope up to 1.5 mu m and is spectrally distinct from those of Himalia and Elara. Our model suggests that it is compositionally similar to amorphous carbon. Conclusions. Himalia and Elara are compositionally similar but di ff er significantly from Carme. These results support the hypotheses that the Jupiter's irregular satellites are captured bodies that were subject to further breakup events and clustered as families based on their similar physical and surface compositions.

For animals express their best genetic traits, they need to be in a favorable environment. The state of the Cearà has favorable environmental conditions for the production of broilers, but high temperatures prevail throughout the year. The mechanism control of the temperature of the body of birds is only effective when the ambient temperature is within limits. The combination of high temperatures and high relative humidity can affect the welfare of the birds and become a limiting factor for production. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the environment in shed of the birds, realize measuring of the temperature and relative humidity for the calculate the Enthalpy Comfort Index (IEC), also measure the temperature of the Litter, wind speed and luminosity for drafting of kriging maps, also monitor physiological variables (rectal temperature and respiratory rate), the birds' behavior and weight gain. Evaluations were made during the dry season, during the morning and afternoon, in two similar shed of the birds, through tools of animal precision. The temperature data of Litter, wind speed and luminosity were analyzed using geostatistics and subsequently maps with profiles of the spatial distribution of these variables over the sheds were prepared. With the maps it was observed that in some places the temperature of the Litter showed very high values, reaching 33.8 ÂC after 42 days. This temperature was considered high and can cause thermal discomfort to birds and harm the exchanges thermal by conduction. The kriging maps also showed that the ventilation system not distributed homogeneously the ventilation. The highest average wind speed was 2.6 ms -1. Measurements of rectal temperature and respiratory rate of birds in the 5th and 6th week were considered high and indicated a heat stress condition. The evaluation of the ethogram showed that the birds reduced the time spent feeding and increased leisure time, between the 5th to 6th week. This fall in consumption probably happened due to condition of heat stress that birds were submitted. All these factors evaluated negative ly reflected in weight gain of the animals, which had the weight lower than expected.

Full text
Abstract:
The Northern Region of the Sudan is poorly endowed with natural resources. Agriculture is the main economic activity. Because of the aridity of the region and the high cost of irrigation, agricultural production is confined to the vicinity of the Nile. Three forms of agricultural production co-exist in the Northern Region. The Shendi area was selected for field survey. These are state, cooperative and private forms of organization. Several philosophical approaches were considered and structuration approach is adopted. It allows for the explanatory role for structures where these dominate over the participating individuals and/or groups. Within structurational context the study argues that these forms of organization have different impacts on land use and development variables. The variables considered are cropping patterns, land use intensity, land productivity, poverty eradication and income distribution. The three forms are different with regard to their ideological stances, group composition, power relations, motives and objectives. These differences are hypothesised as resulting in different applications of management functions and material agricultural inputs. Production relations, land tenure systems, commercial cropping, rotation system, application of fertilizer and labour inputs are different under the three forms of organization. Differences in their operations were found to be a function of differences in structural composition. Private form of organization ranks first with regard to the application of agricultural inputs followed by state and cooperative forms respectively. Differences in operations resulted in differences with regard to their spatial and development impacts. Cropping patterns are different. Land use intensity is higher under private form of organization followed by state and cooperative forms respectively. There is high degree of land under-utilization under all the three forms. Land productivity, capacity to eradicate poverty and patterns of income distribution are remarkably different between them. With all these variables private form of organization ranks higher than the other two. State scheme ranks second and cooperative is a poor third. The three forms of organization have different structural compositions, different operations and different impacts of space and development.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The word ‘waenhuis’ has become synonymous for what is also referred to as a ‘wagon shed.’ Eventually, the term will disappear as the building’s association with wagons becomes less obvious. At the same time ‘waenhuise’ will become relevant to museums and conservationists involved in the study and conservation of local vernacular architecture. Part of investigating these buildings is the creation of a typology to determine trends and building traditions associated with this building type. Spatial configuration and organization of the floor plan are useful criteria to create such a typology. Two basic types, single- and multi-space ‘waenhuise’ can be distinguished. Single-space buildings can be divided into ‘open-sided shelters’ and ‘waenhuise with walls’. Multi-space buildings are divided into those structures consisting of a core building with additions and those that are part of a dwelling. Material and building technique are less important criteria for a typology, but remain essential for the description of the architectural vocabulary of individual buildings.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of how the memories of past teachers "live on" and are manifested in the work of teachers. Employing the method of memory-work to engage in self-study, the author worked with three other women teachers and teacher educators, as she explored the relationship between the memories of former teachers and their influence on her life as a woman and teacher educator. Although there has been a great deal of interest in the significance of autobiography and life history approaches to narrative inquiry over the last decade, and a considerable acknowledgment and appreciation for how past experiences shape the present, the act of remembering, memory itself, has rarely been looked at within the context of narratives in teacher education. Thus, while teachers' anecdotes and stories have gained acceptance and recognition as valuable educational research tools, aspects of memory that make up, influence and ultimately shape the narratives have not been the subject of much discussion. In response, this study investigated how the remembering process shapes the memories themselves in terms of how and what is remembered and how those memories may be constructed. Through the careful consideration and reflection of the past, there lies the potential to understand more fully why and how we have come to be who we are. Further, within this reflection there lies the potential for change as we endeavor to become whom we wish to be. The study concludes with a discussion of research implications and recommendations for further research in the area of self-study and memory-work in pre-service and in-service teacher education.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the idea of the “monstrous-feminine,” or the idea that female monsters of television and film are linked to their femininity in a way that male monsters are not linked to their masculinity. Using the work of scholars such as Barbara Creed, Shelley Stamp Lindsey, and Jane M. Ussher, the thesis covers various facets of women’s lives as seen through the distorted lens of the monstrous. The character of Helena from the television show Orphan Black is used as a concrete example of the stages of the monstrous-feminine: the girl-child, menstruation and puberty, sexuality, and motherhood.

Abstract:

In this essay a novel by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami, The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, is examined through dreams as a psychoanalytical phenomenon or spectacle. The novel is a complex work but mainly circles around the main character Toru, a middle-aged man in modern Japan whose wife leaves him unexpectedly. The focus in this essay is on the dream symbols in this novel and how they have a narrative function, i.e., how the symbols can be tied to the main character Toru’s real life problems, more specifically, his problems with femininity. The psychoanalytical approaches used in this essay are Sigmund Freud’s and C G Jung’s theories on dreams. Material from another novel by Murakami, Norwegian Wood, which contains the same type of symbolic imagery as The Wind-up Bird, is also included.

This thesis aims to conduct a research on the single stone statues in Shensi, and Honan areas in the phase of Northern Wei Dynasty. It is, in the meanwhile, to reveal the statue patterns as well as the relations between the two areas. The thesis undertakes the geographical specification of stone statues in Shensi, and Honan. By dint of inspecting on the archaeological excavation locations or from the archaeological studies cited, this thesis thus further assures the affiliated prefecture. Geographically speaking, nowadays in Shensi, the acquainted locations of stone statues are Yaohsien, Xian, Changan, Xingping, Qianhsien, Xianyang, Lintong, Huahsien, Linyou, Changwu, Luochuan, and Ansai. While in the phase of Northern Wei Dynasty, these areas then ranged among Yongstate, Huastate, North Huastate, Jingstate, Qistate, Hsiastate. In Honan today, the known statue locations cover Jihsien, Huihsien, Shanyang, Qihsien, Qinyang, Yanshi, and Zhengzhou, while they all are situated in Sizhou in Northern Wei Dynasty. Then, successively arrange the statues in an order of patterns and time, comprehend progressively in the light of the statue figures, clothing, and decorative pictures, and incorporate undefined statues as possible variables into my discussion in the hope to thrououghly generalize the threads of statue production in the two areas, and in my thesis as well. In the area of Shensi, it is obvious that there are three kinds of statue types (Ⅰ, Ⅱ, Ⅲ Type ). Type (Ⅰ) is firstly seen first in Xian, Type (Ⅱ) in Yaohsien, and Type (Ⅲ) in Changwu. The representative city of Type (Ⅰ) is Xian, and also are seen in Xingping, Qianhsien, Huahsien, and Luochuan. It is obvious that Type (Ⅰ) featuring mainly in Xian reveals an outward influence in neighboring cities. Type (Ⅱ) is quantitatively major in Yaohsien, inferring its significance in this area as well as the influence in Lintong, Xianyang, and remote area of Ansai. Type (Ⅲ) mainly occupies in Changwu, while statues in its southern area, Linyou are alike. Moreover, representative statues in Sizhou area are quantitatively in Jihsien, are the sixth century hereafter in terms of era, and are characteristic of three figures with abundant background decoration carved. The figures also reveal the creators’ vivid personality. Unanimous accordance of figure patterns, clothing, subject materials, and decorative design can be ovserved here. After geographical understanding of statue figures, further comparison in styles will be proceeded to preceive the differences, similarities and interaction. On account of the differential statues between the Sizhou and Shensi area in the sixth century, it is explicit that another statue development exists in Honan. Understanding religious idolism in every area by means of the archaeological studies cited, and inter-consulting the representation of the regional statue making cooperatively ascribe to further elaboration on single stone statues.

Li Shen(772~846) , courtesy name Gongchui (公垂), who claimed ancestry from a prominent clan of Zhao Commandery(趙郡, in modern Hebei), came from Bozhou (亳州, in modern Anhui), then moved to Changzhou (常州, in modern Jiangsu). A mid-Tang (中唐) poet, Li Shen lived in the times when “defense commands” (藩鎮), Niu-Li Factional Fight (牛李黨爭), and eunuchs in turn caused disorder, and when the political situation was starting to get worse. He lost his father as a child, and was raised and taught by his mother. He studied in Changzhou as a teenager, then traveled nationwide as an adult. During the trip nationwide, he wrote poems reflecting on the society. At the age of 35, he obtained the Jinshi (進士) degree and later was dubbed Duke Wensu of Zhao (趙文肅公). There is Collected Works of Reminiscence (追昔遊集) compiled by Li Shen himself for us to read nowadays. There are 147 poems and 14 pieces of prose available. There were three achievements Li Shen made in literature:First, the poems Pity the Peasants (Ancient Air)(〈憫農〉). Second, twenty “newly titled” yueh-fu (〈樂府新題〉). Li Shen was one of the initiators of the new yueh-fu movement Third, Dong Jieyuan's (董解元) version of the Story of the Western Wing (西廂記諸宮調) in the Jin dynasty was based on both Li Shen’s Song of Ying-ying (鶯鶯歌) and Yuan Zhen’s (元稹, 779~831) The Story of Ying-ying (鶯鶯傳). This thesis consists of seven chapters and appendix Ⅰ-Ⅲ. The first chapter “Introduction” deals with the main objectives of the author, methodology, literature on Li Shen’s poetry and the scope of the thesis. The second chapter “The life and times of Li Shen” covers a lot of topics on Li Shen’s background. The third chapter “The connections between Li Shen and the new yueh-fu movement in the mid-Tang period” traces the history of yueh-fu and talks about the role Li Shen played in the new yueh-fu movement. The fourth chapter “The topics of Li Shen’s poetry” sorts Li Shen’s poetry into six groups. The fifth chapter “The writing skills of Li Shen’s poetry” talks about the skills such as Qilu (七律)(an eight-line poem with seven characters to a line and a strict tonal pattern and rhyme scheme). The sixth chapter “The characteristics, influences, and evaluation of Li Shen’s poetry” talks about the appraisals of Li Shen’s poetry done by his contemporary and later critics. The seventh chapter “Conclusion” is divided in two parts:the summary and prospects. The appendices contains tables about Li Shen’s poetry etc.

Abstract The style of calligraphy and painting of “ eight mavericks of Yang-Chou “ takes on “the expressionism” of the latter Ming Dynasty has continued to develop, Huang-Shen is one representative painter-calligrapher. Both in painting and calligraphy, he created a unique technique known as “calligraphic painting”-a style in which calligraphic use of lines and strokes are mainly applied to the creation of painting, Huang-Shen’s calligraphy has a high degree of awareness of self expression, in line with the original spirit and principles of artistic creation. Since the beginning of the Qing Dynasty to the rise of Wu Changshuo, according to the author humble opinion, never has there been anyone reached achievement in “calligraphic painting” as well as Huang-Shen has done, which therefore cause the motive to research. Huang-Shen’s paintings more favored by later generations have more theses compared to his calligraphy, which is rarely studied while nearly belonged to “calligraphic painting” and it’s by no means classified into the category of calligraphic history, yet not be thoroughly analyzed and probed to realize the background and subsequent development of his calligraphy in vertical axis of calligraphic history, or the appearance produced by the interaction with the very age of his time. It’s quite a pity that if the study of Huang-Shen’s works of calligraphy not be concentrated on this area, therefore this article is adopted the research of literary documentation, first, to classify the relevant historical data and make arrangement with chapters and sections. First of all, to explore Huang-Shen’s artistic background, and then focusing on Huang-Shen’s works of calligraphy. Issues in calligraphy, it’s the point to explore the source of his literary culture and the study of his calligraphic theory. As to Huang-Shen’s works of calligraphy without record of time, which formed a difficult problem, thus only a small number of local experts to conduct research. This article intended to adopt a research which compared different style accompanied by documentation as a time study of his works. Hope that through this thesis research, one can realize the painter’s different idea and artistic achievement in the use of calligraphic line, ink—thick, light, dry, wet, and character structure. Huang-Shen’s painting concentrating on calligraphic lines and strokes which is emphasized the quality of writing makes more three-dimensional sense. To view generally, the inventiveness of Huang-Shen’s pen road has indeed set a new artistic trail for artists of the later generations to follow.

Observing those literature of Unusual Monsters in “Yaokuai Pu, Jicheng”, we could find that Unusual Monster is the earliest concept among the three types. At first, these Yaokuai have the same feature as deities , which have combined appearance . While those deities became more human-like, Yaokuai became more and more animal-like. During Qin and Han dynasties, because of the current of Chenwei, the omens character of Unusual Monster . And then, the character of combined appearance gradually disappeared and differentiated the Nymph. However, the concept of Nymph still have not stabilized after Six Dynasties. I found these Yaokuai became more and more human-like, and presented the ideal personality. This process reached its peak while Ming and Qing dynasties. At the same time, Demon Calamity, a kind of Yaokuai, appeared and caused great panic. I compared the social background and the dissertations of Sinologists, trying to find the answer of this conversion of Yaokuai. After researching the concept of Yaokuai and the transformation , I tried to figure out the image of Yaokuai in the graphic material, such as Rock Art, The Illustrations to the Book of Hills and Seas, illustrations of Han Stone, Ming and Qing mythical demon novel illustrates, and the paintings of Chinese New Year during late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. Studying these pictures which have great correlation with Yoakuai in order to have an understanding the elements composed these pictures. Finally, I want to know if the concept of Yokuai in China have transferred to neighboring countries, such as Japan and Korea. I explored the literature records of these culture transferring in general, and reaching the conclusion : The concept of Yaokuai in these countries originated in China. There are some Yaokuai in these two countries even preserved all the characteristics their origins possessed intactly.

Due to the political factors, there were a lot of great painters and calligraphers brought together to Taiwan in the 1950s. Some calligraphers were good at running and cursive script, and some at seal and official script. As for regular script, Chiang Chao-Shen made a strong position for himself because of the variety features absorbing and sublimating from the strict rules of Tong Dynasty’s style. Chiang Chao-Shen dedicated his life to the learning of various kinds of stone inscription rubbings and copying models of handwriting, and achieved his own characters in different styles of script. He also built up his calligraphy studies concept, which can be found at the comments in his calligraphy works, through the imitating of ancient’s works. Furthermore, Chiang Chao-Shen’s strong character of running script earned him a fame called“Chiang Script.” This research contains five chapters. Chapter 1 describes the motive, purposes, scope limit, steps and literature analysis of the research. Chapter 2 describes the biography of Chiang Chao-Shen. Chapter 3 makes a thorough inquiry into Chiang Chao-Shen’s track of studying and personal style of calligraphy. Chapter 4 discovers the connections between Chiang Chao-Shen’s calligraphy studies concept and his personal character – from original and his copy of ancient painting and calligraphy. Study on Chiang Chao-Shen’s Art of Painting Abstract Mr. Chiang Chao-Shen, whose art accomplishment has reputed as a paragon in the category of literati painting, not only performed prominently in art appreciation and the art history, but also mastered poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal carving. With limited intelligence, I am not capable to look into all his excellence, thus I chose the inquiry of performance in painting as the purpose of this study and focused on the topic: Study on Chiang Chao-Shen’s Art of Painting. In order to achieve this study purpose, I applied methods such as the historical research, the style approach and the art sociology mythology to investigate in exact capture of the entire appearance and pulse to obtain proper and objective conclusions. From Chapter 1 (Introduction), Chapter 2 (The Creation Background of Chiang Chao-Shen’s Paintings), Chapter 3 (Chiang Chao-Shen’s Philosophy of Painting), Chapter 4 (Chiang Chao-Shen’s Style of Painting), Chapter 5 (Chiang Chao-Shen’s Accomplishment and Influence on Painting), and Chapter 6 (The Conclusions), I have obtained real research results. For example, in respective of the creation background of painting, it was proved that Chiang’s painting subject, performance and style were influenced by the times. Besides, I researched and thus assumed on the issues including the expelling he encountered soon after entering the elementary school, his exact education background, and his becoming a student of Pu Hsin-Yu. As to his philosophy of painting, though he had not written any book I still achieved to outline his art thought from his a great deal of articles. For instance, Chiang’s opinions about literati painting were different from those of Tung Chi-Chang and he did not identify the theory about the Zen Schools in the north and south. Due to the cultural heritage and the times, he held the painting conceptions in relation to the mixture of poetry and painting and the linkage of calligraphy and painting. Additionally, his creation attitudes were for personal extra skills and amusement. He also created his unique theories about the painting process and about the genius. In aspect of his painting style, there were three categories, consisting of figure painting, flower painting, and mountain-and-water painting, discussed. In accordance with the influence factor and the style evolvement, his mountain-and-water paintings in large quantity were divided into 4 phases. 1. 1932-1364: Phase of preliminary practice. 2. 1965-1974: Phase of thinking and trying. 3. 1975-1984: Phase of style independence. 4. 1985-1996: Phase of maturity and perfection. Each phase was inspected on the style evolvement and trend in his mountain-and-water paintings. About his painting accomplishment and influence, I made 4 positions for his accomplishment after reviewing my research results and referring to others’ various allegations. 1. Abstract Lu Chuan-Shen was known as the "father of Taiwan Choral Music", who was the musician engaged in the acquisition and reorganization of Taiwanese folk choral songs. Abstract The thesis is to examine the yet obscured individual stony statues in the Shanxi Province in China during the Northern Period. First of all, the thesis compares and clarifies the present and ancient names of the locations of these statues. The statues are mostly situated in Xian, Changan, Jingyang, Xianyang, Xingping, Ganxian, Gaoling, Lintong, Yaoxian, Huaxian, Luochuan, Huanglin, Changwu, and Ansai. Among them, Xian stands out for its influence on the statues in the other counties. The influence is reflected in styles, motifs, shapes and decorations. Hence a single chapter will be devoted to discussing the uniqueness of Xian statues. Then I divide the other statues into two categories, according to their distance from Xian and to their similarity to those in Xian. The first category is composed of areas adjacent to Xian, such as Changan, Jingyang, Xianyang, Xingping, Ganxian, and Gaoling. The other category includes such farther counties as Yaoxian, Huaxian, Luochuan, Huanglin, Changwu, and Ansai. Lintong is categorized into the first group because of its location, yet its statues’ resemblance to those in Yaoxian, which belongs to the second category, deserves further discussion. In addition, I also study some statues from unknown origins in the hope of putting together the overall development of statues in Shanxi. When it comes to the religious beliefs and icons, the most common are Shijia, crossing-feet Maitreya as well as standing Guanyin. Some crossing-feet Maitreya are adorned with Taoist caps. This reflects some fusion/confusion between Buddist Maitreya and Taoist icons. In conclusion, I try to map the various styles of statues in Shanxi during the Northern Period through a close look in all respects.
