Abstract:
Abstract The textual proximity of “woman” and “apocryphal literature” in a fragment included in the Apophthegmata Patrum may seem paradoxical. Abba Sopatrus’ apophthegm must be understood against the background of the theological debates of Origenists and non-Origenists during the 4th – 6th centuries, in Northern Egypt, and consequently needs to be exegetically enframed between Emperor Justinian I. (l. 482-565; r. 527-565) Edictum contra Origenem and Archimandrite Shenute of Atripe (348-466)’s Contra Origenistas. In fact, the contemporary Gnostic literature was able to generate heretical sexual imagery. The Apocryphon of John (II, 1; III, 1; IV, 1; BG 8502, 2), included in the Nag Hammadi Library, explains in a sexual manner the origin of evil. Abba Sopatrus’ apophthegm testifies about the proximity of Christianity and Gnosticism in Northern Egypt during the period of the Desert Fathers, and also about the effort of the abbas to establish firm limits against sexual lust and the lust of the erroneous dogmata. Both posed tremendous potential danger of disintegrating the monks’ peace of mind and peace of soul.

Wildish, Mark. "Hieroglyphic semantics in Late Antiquity." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3922/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this thesis is the reconstruction of a development in the history of the philosophy of language, namely an understanding of hieroglyphic Egyptian as a language uniquely adapted to the purposes and concerns of late Platonist metaphysics. There are three main reasons for this particular focus. First, the primary interest of philological criticism has emphasized the apparent shortcomings of the classical hieroglyphic tradition in light of the success of the modern decipherment endeavour. Though the Greek authors recognize a number of philologically distinctive features, they are primarily interested in contrasting hieroglyphic and Greek semantics. The latter is capable of discursive elaboration of the sapiential content to which the former is non-discursively adapted. Second, the sole surviving, fully extant essay in the exegesis of Egyptian hieroglyphs, the Hieroglyphica of Horapollo can be situated within the broader philosophical project in which the Neoplatonic commentators were engaged. As such, it draws on elements of the distinct traditions of Greek reception of Egyptian wisdom, 4th/5th century pagan revivalism under Christian persecution, and late Platonist logico-metaphysical methodological principles. Third, the rationale for Neoplatonic use of allegorical interpretation as an exegetical tool is founded on the methodological principle of ‘analytic ascent’ from the phenomena depicted, through the concepts under which they fall, to their intelligible causes. These three stages in the ascent correspond to the three modes of expression of which, according to Greek exegetes, hieroglyphic Egyptian, as composites of material images and intelligible content, is capable. Horapollo’s Hieroglyphica, I argue, maintains a tripartite distinction between linguistic expressions, their meanings, and the objects or name-bearers which they depict and further aligns that distinction with three modes of hieroglyphic expression: representative, semantic, and symbolic. I conclude, therefore, that a procedure of analytic explanatory ascent from empirical observation through discursive reason to metaphysical or cosmological insights is employed in the exegesis of the sapiential content of the hieroglyphs of which it treats.

Abstract:

Cao, Siyang. "Crafting elastic masculinity : formations of shenti, intimacy and kinship among young men in China." Thesis, University of York, 2018. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/20182/.

Full text
Abstract:
Under the ever-deepening transformations in contemporary China, traditional gender relations have been reshaped, but elements of patriarchy informed by the legacy of Confucianism still linger. These intricately interwoven forces have exerted a great impact on the gendered lives of the young generation. This research aims to examine young men’s views of Chinese manhood and how they construct and negotiate masculinities in their everyday lives. I conducted 30 semi-structured in-depth interviews with Chinese men aged between 22 and 32, who are mostly ordinary men in the middle social stratum in Shanghai and Shenyang. I regard Chinese men as actively negotiating their identities within particular stages of their life course. Overall, this thesis is informed by perspectives of relational selfhood and Confucian notions of the relational, reflexive, and embodied self that is an ongoing process of becoming. I bring indigenous concepts and cultural repertoires into critical dialogue with global and leading sociological theories of individualisation and reflexivity. Based on my analyses, I introduce and develop the concept of ‘elastic masculinity’. Specifically, I argue that the masculinity of ordinary young men is flexible, adaptable and accommodating. However, the term elastic masculinity also illustrates that it is limited by the availability of resources, structural constraints, cultural traditions and diverse personal relationships. Thus, elastic masculinity is an appropriate metaphor and an important concept to understand Chinese young men’s active engagement with China’s global modernity, increasing individualisation, shifting gender values and local realities.

Perera, Nichole. "The Destruction of Statues in Late Antique Egypt: A Widespread Phenomenon or Christian Polemic?" Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/37020.

Full text
Abstract:
The topic of violence in Late Antiquity is a heavily debated subject and many scholars have focused on this issue, as evidenced by the many studies published within the last ten years. The perception of Late Antiquity as a period of widespread religious violence is mainly influenced by Christian literary sources, who document accounts of violence against temples, statuary, and people alike. Egypt, in particular, has often been used as an example to demonstrate the destructive nature of religious violence that existed in the ancient world. However, the concept of religious violence is a complicated and nuanced topic. In Egypt, the many accounts by the Christian sources were written with specific intentions and the events documented in the texts were often exaggerated. The objective of this thesis is to provide a study of statue destruction by Christians between the fourth to seventh centuries CE in Egypt, and determine whether these destructions were acts of religious violence or were carried out for another reason in order to provide a more nuanced understanding of violence in Late Antiquity. By juxtaposing accounts from literary sources and archaeological evidence, the study seeks to determine whether the literary sources are accurate in their documentation of widespread statue destruction, or whether the violent discourse present in the literary sources is the result of Christian polemical purposes.

Abstract:
In this study, we analyze and compare the temperature profiles, and temperature gradient profiles of UN, U3Si2 and U3O8 aluminum (Al) dispersed nuclear fuels to propose safer nuclear fuels with enhanced thermal conductivity. To calculate the electronic and lattice thermal conductivities, we use EPW, BoltzTrap and ShengBTE codes implemented with Quantum Espresso. Maxwell-Eucken approximation is used to get the effective thermal conductivity of the considered dispersed fuels. The temperature and temperature gradients are calculated by solving the steady state heat conduction equation for a cylindrical fuel rod. Results show that these fuels have reduced the centerline temperature which will prevent fuel melting, as well it will reduce the thermal stress which leads to cracking the pellet.

Abstract:
Abstract It is known that the interlayer van der Waals (vdW) interactions will decrease the thermal conductivity of graphene. Single layer graphene (SLG) has the highest thermal conductivities, double layer graphene (DLG) would decrease to about half of the thermal conductivity of SLG. The graphite was measured to have a thermal conductivity of about 2000 W/m-K. Some research shows that graphite differs from SLG within a factor of 2, and DLG has almost the same thermal conductivity with graphite. In theoretical aspect, how to simulate the vdW interaction between graphene layers is a long existing problem. It is only until recently that the vdW interaction is still an active topic in first principle calculations. The popular methods include the Grimme’s DFT-D, vdW-DF and vdW-DFT-R methods. The vdW-DFT-R method was further optimized to increase accuracy by Hamada and was found to predict the most accurate interlayer distance between AB-stacked graphene in our recent study. The motivation of this work is to investigate the effect of vdW interaction on the thermal conductivity of multiple layer graphene from principles. We will calculate firstly the phonon dispersion relations of multiple layer graphene with the vdW interaction included. The obtained phonon properties and force constants will be combined with the ShengBTE method to calculate the thermal conductivity. The results show how vdW interaction causes the dimensional crossover of graphene thermal conductivity.
