Abstract:
People have shared the geography they located in with animals since ancient times. Within this symbiosis, people have benefited from animals that they are in continuous interaction in various areas. Central Asia steps is a region that has harsh continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Migrant settlers in this region, with a limited agriculture potential, live off animal husbandry. Feeding of herd and the need for managing this duty in a safe way pave the way for sheepherding. Shepherd’s felt cloak and fur used by shepherds against the unfavorable weather conditions are the primary symbols of shepherd culture due to their important functions. Worn by shepherds in order to be protected against the unfavorable climate conditions, felt cloak defined as sleeveless clothing made up of felt are considered with the concept of felt. Similarly shepherd’s fur, which is made up of peltry of sheep and lamb, and has a similar function with felt cloak, is one of vital clothing materials of shepherds. As a natural result of animal breeding, which is one of the indispensable elements of the nomadic lifestyle, with the transition processes of people to the settled order and accordingly agricultural production as well as the breeding of animals they have tried to hunt, the shepherd profession, which is obliged to meet all kinds of needs of animals, has emerged. In this study, it is aimed to give information about the development and importance of shepherd, about dandruff and shepherd's fur, a clothing specific to shepherds. The information obtained from the written and virtual sources related to the subject and the interviews made with the source persons were tried to be transferred. It is important to emphasize the process of making a garment a cultural carrier.

Abstract:
Pastoral Life and Paradise DreamBy Inger Lise MikkelsenIn »The World Chronicle«, 1814, Grundtvig writes that the people of poetry, the ancient Hebrews, were a race of shepherds. The shepherds are not tied to material things, but live a life in freedom. On the plains, tending his flock, the shepherd experiences everything that is alive and growing as images of God’s creative power. Thus, he intuitively perceives his position as a creature facing his Creator. With this basic view as a point of departure, Grundtvig rewrites the Biblical stories of the shepherds Abraham and Jacob, Moses and David. They are all in an immediate, intimate contact with God, but as they live at different times, God endows them with different abilities appropriate for their concrete historical situation. Abraham and Jacob are the shepherds of faith, Moses is the shepherd of fight and hope, and David is the shepherd of love. They are all models, not because they are heroes, but because they recognize their own fragility. In the church texts, the shepherds of Christmas night play a particularly important role. In the hymn .The Christmas Chimes are sounding now. (Det kimer nu til julefest) from 1817, it is a main thought that the singers must remember pastoral life and come along into the field to hear the angel’s message together with the shepherds. To people who have a sense of the miraculous as the shepherds do, the field at Bethlehem is the centre of interest. Today only children possess a genuine shepherd’s mind. The adult can learn from them. The essential thing is to learn how to regain the child’s mind.In connection with the child theme, as shown by Chr. Thodberg, Grundtvig develops, through the 1820s, his understanding of baptism as the occasion when the adult may re-enter the dreamland of his childhood. Here Grundtvig uses Jacob’s ladder as an image of the adult’s return to his hitherto forgottem baptism.Another theme that Grundtvig makes frequent use of is the dilapidated cottage of the shepherd, his hut. He uses it as an image of man’s heart, which to Grundtvig is God’s dwelling on earth. The hut and the ladder become recurring images in Grundtvig’s hymns.Frequently the two images supplement each other so that the shepherds and Bethlehem may now move into the church. It is no longer the field, but the heart that rings with the angels’ song. Here, in the shepherd’s hut, is raised Jacob’s ladder, which reminds the singer of the childhood life under God’s care.In Grundtvig’s eyes every Christian is therefore a shepherd like the patriarchs. But above all the one baptized is like the good shepherd himself, renewing the paradise life that God created man for.

Abstract:
The author of the novel 'Keethari' is S. Tamilselvi. The introductory message about the novelist summarizes all the details about education, work, marriage, family, and arrival to the field of writing. In this novel, the shepherds lead a nomadic life due to the occupational system. Due to their sheep herding occupations, nature leads them to live a nomadic life in search of grazing and water. Men and women are engaged in sheep herding without any discrimination. Therefore, the habits of the shepherds change accordingly. The diets of the shepherds' lives are also structured to suit the nomadic life. In that way, the artifacts used by the shepherds are also different from the artifacts of the common people. Some professional beliefs are found among the shepherds when steering sheep. Marriage is one of the major turning points in human life. At such an important juncture in the life of the bridegroom, he has to go to the shepherd. Therefore, in the life of the shepherds, instead of the bridegroom, they perform the wedding rites with the shepherd's crook. The article sets out to explore the rituals, stories, songs, deities worshiped by the shepherds, the blessings bestowed on the shepherds by Parvathi and Lord Shiva, and the manifestation of the shepherds' kindness in their daily troubles of the shepherds.

Abstract:
As the Lord Jesus stated, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.” The primary responsibility of shepherds is to serve in Matthew 20:28. The shepherd’s basic role is that of a servant; the word servant is derived from the Greek word doulos, which means slave. In this sense, the ministry of shepherding is a ministry of service; the shepherd serves as a leader, a father, a prophet, a priest, and a head for the flock or congregation that God has committed to him, in addition to being a servant or slave. As a role model for his flock or congregation, the church pastor’s role must be evident. The goal of this article is to broaden the shepherd model based on Psalm 23, which represents the functions of a Christian life. The duty of the shepherd is highlighted as we examine the identification and biblical usage of sheep and shepherds. The role of the shepherd is to care for his congregation, based on Psalm 23:3, by guiding them to the right path, besides also providing goodness and mercy (Psalm 23:6).

Abstract:
This article discusses the benefits of pastoral livestock production. It defines the need for the construction of separate areas for the keeping of free-ranging livestock. The benefits of enclosing grazing livestock through the construction of electropastures are discussed, as well as possible problems in their operation, such as breakage. As a consequence of the interruption, the electric shepherd does not provide a controlled grazing environment, allowing other animals to enter, or the current ones to leave the enclosed area. Electropasturing provides animals with the best terrain from the pasture through plot grazing. Opportunities to survey electric shepherds and their integrity are analyzed for proper functioning. A new method allowing localization for the exact location of the electric shepherd's break is discussed.

Abstract:
The depiction of God being the shepherd of God’s flock is familiar among many modern Christians. This is an image rooted in the themes of provision, protection, and authority, which characterize the reign of God as King and Shepherd of His people. In the same thematic stream, the kings and rulers of Israel were also seen as shepherds. Jeremiah 22 contrasts the wicked shepherds of Israel and their rule of oppression with the righteous shepherd that is Josiah and his rule of justice. The praise of Josiah’s righteousness is then sanctified in Jeremiah’s prophecy of the Branch of David in Jeremiah 23: one wholly Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ.

Abstract:
Film, photography, fact and fiction in the Pollino Mountains (Southern Italy)The film “Il Buco” (The Hole, 2022) by Michelangelo Frammartino is about a speleological expedition in the Pollino mountains (northern Calabria, Italy) in 1961. It won the Special Jury Award at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and received excellent reviews in the Dutch press (Volkskrant, Trouw, NRC, VPRO Cinema). In the film, an old shepherd at the end of his life observes a group of speleologists exploring an exceptionally deep cave. The shepherd dies just as the speleologists discover the end of the cave. To situate the death scene, Frammartino reconstructed a typical shepherd’s dwelling used in the days when the transhumance summer camps in the Pollino mountains were still used as shepherds’ summer dwellings. Frammartino based the reconstruction on black-and-white pictures from the archive of Giuseppe De Matteis, a speleologist from Turin, who took part in the expedition. De Matteis took several photographs of such shepherd´s dwellings during the period of the cave exploration, especially at the site of Mandra Vecchia, which is now part of the field study area of the Pollino Archaeological Landscape Project (PALP), led by the authors since 2020. These shepherds’ huts were made of wooden poles and planks and reinforced at ground level with limestone blocks. Other pastoral facilities, such as animal pens and sheds for cheesemaking, were located nearby. Archaeological research on the remains of these summer camps, combined with interviews, is beginning to reveal everyday life in Pollino summer camps. In this paper we bring together fact and fiction based on Frammartino’s documentary from 2021, Giuseppe De Matteis´ photo archive from the 1960s and our own fieldwork in the area.

Abstract:
The study of the practical aspect of traditional cattle grazing in the Tambov region is based on materials collected in the mid-1990s during field practices carried out by students of the Department of Ethnography and Anthropology of St. Petersburg State University under the supervision of the author of the article. It is quite justified to call the recorded practices “traditional” since breeding and grazing of private livestock by collective farmers did not change significantly even after collectivization. This is confirmed by the pre-revolutionary materials on the tradition of cattle grazing in the Kirsanovsky District (uezd) of Tambov Province cited in the article. This study employs the methods of comparative historical analysis but also take into account the unique features of the natural environment of various parts of the Tambov region. To graze its herd, a community hired a shepherd, made a written contract with him and confirmed it with a drink treat (magarych). The shepherds were usually local or from nearby villages. Each type of animal had its own shepherds. Depending on the size, a herd could have one or two shepherds, who were sometimes assisted by a shepherd boy. Grazing continued from the appearance of fresh grass in spring until the appearance of a permanent snow cover. Over time, the remuneration of shepherds changed from a combination of food and money to a mainly monetary one and shifted from a seasonal to a monthly schedule. Additionally, on certain days, the shepherd had the right to visit the cattle owners in order to get food from them. The shepherd was equipped with a whip and sometimes also had a horn. No information of any other features of his equipment and clothing was gathered. The article presents data on local peculiarities of cattle grazing. The collected materials show that to a certain extent, local differences were determined by the characteristics of the environment. When grazing in the forest, the size of the herd was smaller than on open pastures, sheep and goats were not grazed in the forest, and the shepherd used a horn there to gather animals.

Abstract:
Behavioral studies demonstrate that not only humans, but all other animals including dogs, can suffer from depression. A quantitative molecular evaluation of fatty acids in human and animal platelets has already evidenced similarities between people suffering from depression and German Shepherds, suggesting that domestication has led dogs to be similar to humans. In order to verify whether humans and dogs suffering from similar pathologies also share similar microorganisms at the intestinal level, in this study the gut-microbiota composition of 12 German Shepherds was compared to that of 15 dogs belonging to mixed breeds which do not suffer from depression. Moreover, the relation between the microbiota of the German Shepherd’s group and that of patients with depression has been investigated. The results indicate that the German Shepherd’s gut-microbiota has a different composition compared to other dog breeds and is characterized by microbial groups identified in humans with depression, highlighting the existence of a “core” microbiota associated with depression.

Abstract:
In Telemula, a highland village of Sardinia, Italy, the concept of 'modernity' has been assigned a positive moral meaning which is used in opposition to the concept of 'tradition'. This dissertation examines the phenomenological dimension of strategic repositionings deployed by local people, as they strive to represent themselves as persone brave (good persons). Alternative representations of shepherds carry different moral connotations. Villagers who have to decide whether or not to become, or to continue to be shepherds, also wish to represent themselves positively. Thus, they manipulate the meanings which had been originally ascribed by national and supranational agencies, but that currently form part of the locals' world-views. In consequence, individuals participate in the multiplication of life-worlds and codes of meaning that they use in organising their own perceptions of life events and reflexive experience of self.

Abstract:
Canine hip dysplasia is a common orthopedic disorder that affects dogs of all ages and breeds. The exact cause and hereditability of this condition remain unclear. However, good progress has been made in recent years. It is described as a polygenic multifactorial condition. Different treatments are available, whether a surgical or conservative approach is pursued. This dissertation includes a literature review considering the topic of canine hip dysplasia and a preliminary, exploratory study that has the objective of evaluating different radiographic measurements and investigating their correlations and their possible value to help diagnose and differentiate German Shepherds with or without hip dysplasia. For this purpose, acetabular measurements were made in radiographs obtained in the standard hip-extended ventrodorsal view. The results suggest statistically relevant differences between dysplastic and nondysplastic and also between male and female dogs. However, further investigation on these measurements and their utility is warranted; RESUMO: DISPLASIA DE ANCA EM CÃES: AVALIAÇÃO RADIOGRÁFICA DE PASTORES ALEMÃES EM PORTUGAL Displasia de anca em cães é um problema ortopédico comum que afeta cães de todas as idades e raças. As causas e heritabilidade exata desta condição continuam obscura.

Abstract:

With the many challenges that Chinese American churches are facing, together with the ever-changing needs of their members, Chinese American churches need to look for ways to nurture their members and to develop them into mature leaders. This thesis project is designed to explore the leadership development strategies of selected Chinese churches in North America that have demonstrated certain effectiveness and success in developing leaders, in hopes of discovering some common effective leadership development strategies. This author has interviewed eleven large Chinese American churches, with Sunday attendance ranging from 500 to 2600, regarding the strategies they use and the challenges they face in developing leaders. Using qualitative analysis, this author has discovered some common principles that have been used by these churches to develop leaders and has formulated some practical pointers that may be applicable to other Chinese American churches and beyond.

The findings reveal that faith and character development precedes skill training. Likewise, Christ-like character, spiritual maturity, and a willingness to serve are more important than a person's natural abilities and talents. In addition, the pastoral staff should be highly involved in designing and executing the leadership development programs. Moreover, the church should create a learning atmosphere by publicizing and offering life-relevant and need-based trainings through classrooms, small groups, or other venues. Outside resources such as guest speakers, seminars and conferences should also be utilized. Furthermore, opportunities should be provided for lay people to participate in service with the help of on-the-job training and ongoing support.

Abstract:
Scholars have evaluated the causes of clergy political preferences and behavior for decades. As with party ID in the study of mass behavior, personal ideological preferences have been the relevant clergy literature's dominant behavioral predictor. Yet to the extent that clergy operate in bounded and specialized institutions, it is possible that much of the clergy political puzzle can be more effectively solved by recognizing these elites as institutionally-situated actors, with their preferences and behaviors influenced by the institutional groups with which they interact. I argue that institutional reference groups help to determine clergy political preferences and behavior. Drawing on three theories derived from neo-institutionalism, I assess reference group influence on clergy in two mainline Protestant denominations-the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the Episcopal Church, USA. In addition to their wider and more traditional socializing influence, reference groups in close proximity to clergy induce them to behave strategically-in ways that are contrary to their sincerely held political preferences. These proximate reference groups comprise mainly parishioners, suggesting that clergy political behavior, which is often believed to affect laity political engagement, may be predicated on clergy anticipation of potentially unfavorable reactions from their followers. The results show a set of political elites (the clergy) to be highly responsive to strategic pressure from below. This turns the traditional relationship between elites and masses on its head, and suggests that further examination of institutional reference group influence on clergy, and other political elites, is warranted.

This chapter includes brief samples of interviews with dozens of people who work in predominantly Andalusia-based organizations and initiatives, in three general areas: collective associations, university- or government- sponsored professional programs, and direct shepherd-training programs. These areas often overlap, bringing together traditional shepherds, university-trained specialists, and activists working for pastoralism and environmental sustainability. Unlike previous chapters, this chapter offers thumbnail sketches of some of the many actors involved in ensuring the success – and even the survival – of sustainable pastoralism.

Abstract:
This chapter highlights two key issues in pastoralism today: land usage and generational turnover; examined through the case study of Fortunato Guerrero Lara, a shepherd and land-rights leader who straddles tradition and innovation. Our author talks with three generations of shepherds, as well as “one of the few conscientious landowners” in Andalusia. We see two men who have distinctly different lifestyles and personalities united by a shared passion for their cultural and ecological heritage, evidenced by the way they care for the natural landscapes where they work. Through Fortunato, the chapter explores relationships between families of different socio-economic classes and the systems that support or restrict them, as well as glimpse what biodiversity on a multifunctional dehesa means.

In this chapter, we meet the ganadero Pepe Millán, who first took up shepherding in the 1960s out of economic necessity and is now a landowner and teacher. His story showcases how an integrated landscape, people, and animals can lead to a successful livelihood, even in a region not well suited to agriculture. The chapter explores the complexities of moving different livestock, as well as the difficulty in securing bank loans for a livestock farmer with no guaranteed income or equity. The author depicts the importance and impact of teaching in ensuring the knowledge of shepherds is passed down to younger generations and in raising awareness of the environmental and nutritional impact of land use, animals, and food sources. The chapter also includes insight into Pepe’s daughter, Rita’s, cheesemaking business, and the harshness of growing up a shepherd’s daughter.

Abstract:
This chapter provides an overview of pastoralism. As well as telling the long history of this mode of subsistence that involves grazing animals on grasslands, the author describes its ongoing practice in Spain and how this is affected by recent issues such as climate change and capitalism. The chapter challenges misconceptions by presenting pastoralism as a complex, dynamic, and resilient practice that may influence our future behaviour as we recognize the value of shepherds’ methods. Case studies and interviews offer authentic accounts of hard-working, strong individuals who are, simultaneously, preserving the traditions of shepherds who came before them and forging new paths in the contemporary world. Key terminology and geographical information provide the contextual background necessary for the discussion of pastoralism in subsequent chapters.

Abstract:
This case study focuses on Marta Moya Espinosa, a landowner in Huelva, who provides a perspective on the key role of land use in sustainable pastoralism. The chapter discusses the many problems facing landowners, including increased government regulations, natural disasters, volatile markets, and absentee landownership. Her story reveals the complexity of changes and challenges that landowners face, as well as the arduous work required to revitalize not just a family business but an ecosystem itself. Marta helps us understand the difficulty of being an urban career woman with little practical experiences, faced with reviving her dehesa after years of neglect. Her case highlights how, even with a lot of capital, a valuable and working farm and flock, and some knowledge of how to oversee them, it is still an enormous challenge to make the farm profitable over the long term.

Abstract:

ABSTRACT

System complexity continues to grow, creating many new challenges for engineers and decision makers. To maximize value delivery, amidst this complexity, “both” Systems Engineering and Decision Analysis capabilities are essential. For well over a decade the systems engineering profession has had a significant focus on improving systems engineering processes. While process plays an important role, the focus on process was often at the expense of foundational engineering axioms and their contribution to system value. As a consequence, Systems Engineers were viewed as process shepherds which diluted their technical influence on programs. With the recent shift toward Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) the Systems Engineering discipline is “getting back to basics,” focusing on value delivery via foundational engineering axioms built upon first principles, using established laws of engineering and science. This paper will share how Pattern Based Systems Engineering (PBSE), as outlined within INCOSE’s Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) initiative, is a methodology which explicates system value through an understanding and explicit modeling of first principles, better re-uniting Systems Engineering and Decision Analysis capabilities.

Abstract:
Abstract. The Moroccan mountains are filled with stone constructions that showcase skills and construction techniques in harmony with the natural environment and human ways of life. Rarely studied by researchers, these architectural expressions in stone, now considered vernacular heritage, deserve to be explored and studied to uncover their uniqueness and specificities. Among these constructions is the laâzib, a form of rural dwelling characteristic of the high Atlas Mountains of Morocco. True imprints of humans on their territory, built by and for transhumance and serving both as a dwelling and a sheepfold, laâzib embody centuries-old expertise in dry stone construction Exploring this architectural expression in terms of construction methods, ways of life, and usage will be carried out through the study of the laâzibs located on the Yagour plateau, a pastoral area of over 70 km², perched between 1,900 and 2,700 meters above sea level in the High Atlas Mountains, south of Marrakech. A true crossroads for shepherds, Yagour annually hosts nearly 7,000 people from the surrounding villages and is home to several laâzibs. This article aims to explore one of the oldest examples of traditional rural dry-stone buildings in Morocco, deeply rooted in a natural environment characterized by its harshness, exceptional management system, and construction techniques infused with the genius of the place.
