Abstract:
The flor yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) form a biofilm, known as flor velum, on the surface of fino-type sherry wine at the end of the alcoholic fermentation. These film-forming yeasts are responsible for the oxidative transformation of alcohol to acetaldehyde, together with other reactions, which produce the characteristic flavours and aromas of these wines. In this study, we examine the enological behaviour of eight flor yeast strains biofilms in biological aging experiments carried out in the laboratory. Strains with identical chromosomal and mitochondrial DNA patterns and the same origin showed a more closely-related enological behaviour. But the kinetics of growth and acetaldehyde accumulation in the wine were found to be strain-dependent. Moreover, some strains were marked by high acetaldehyde accumulation in their pure cultures during the various phases of the biofilm development. These results provide valuable knowledge for planning technical strategies to improve the biological aging process in the sherry wine industry.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is the introduction of the Holonic framework for the conceptual design of an "intelligent packaging" in the Sherry Wine´s Industry. This purpose is based on the search for an effective design, that is, a design that produces the desired effect on the user, thus fulfilling their expectations and leaving aside the existing problems in the traditional wine packaging. Due to the lack of specific methodologies, the holonic model has been chosen as an integrating framework for the design and development of conventional products. In addition, this model allows to support the combined use of other classical methodologies such as: AHP, QFD, FAST, TRIZ among other, allowing to use in the model, the advantages provided by each of them separately. The result is the methodological application to the design of an intelligent package that achieves the desired goals while improving the consumer experience. The proposed packaging design allows its direct reuse, being advantageous for obtaining certifications and audit approval. In addition, the use of intelligent technologies allows effective control and correct use of the product. Keywords: Sherry wines; holonic engineering; bottle; smart packaging; sustainable design; industrial design.

Abstract:
This paper emerged from discussions during and after the spring 2005 SfAA session on anthropology and nanotechnology. The three authors have worked for many years in substantially different institutional settings. Wolfe has worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and currently managed by UT-Battelle, LLC, for a generation. David has resided at Michigan State University's anthropology department for even longer. Sherry is the relative newcomer, having worked at Intel for 9 years (after 2 years at Microsoft). When talking about the nanotechnology-related work we are, are endeavoring to, or are interested in pursuing, it became clear that our institutionally grounded perspectives varied substantially. Moreover, despite some commonalities, the ways in which we do or would engage in nanotechnology research also diverge. This article is a formalized expression of those commonalities and differences, and is indicative of the range of ways in which anthropologists may participate in research surrounding this potentially revolutionary set of technologies.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article examines the evolution of the Autonomous Union of the Vine (Sindicato Autónomo de la Vid [SAVID]), a radical wine industry union that operated in the Jerez area (Spain) between 1979 and 1987. The SAVID was born as a result of a series of internal conflicts and splits in the trade union Unión Sindical Obrera (USO), which was founded by Christian groups that were influenced by self-management ideas in the province of Cádiz during the 1970s. Drawing on the life stories of two union members, this article analyzes the creation, evolution, and decline of the SAVID labor union of the sherry wine industry in the Jerez area, which can be categorized as a paradigmatic case of “militant particularism.” The biographical narratives of the union members make the identification and analysis of factors involved in both the rise and the decline of this trade union possible. These narratives will also help in contesting the dominant narratives on the role of the trade union movement and the radical Left during the Spanish Transition by providing empirical evidence of labor militancy on a local scale.

Abstract:
In this work we analyze climatic data of temperatures, rainfall, winds and bioclimatic indexes for the last 20 years obtained from 8 agroclimatic stations distributed in the cultivation areas of the Sherry. The effects of climate change have been confirmed and maximum temperatures show a clear tendency to increase, which could lead to a considerable increase in maximum temperatures in the coming years. It has been observed that the average maximum temperatures during the summer in Jerez exceed 32 ºC, while in El Puerto and Sanlúcar they are appreciably cooler and are in the order of 30.5 ºC. It has also been verified a reduction of rainfall by almost 100 L/m2 in recent years, and verifying that rainfall has a certain cyclical character. It has been tested that predominant winds in Jerez are from the east, in Sanlúcar they are from the west and El Puerto has an intermediate wind regime. Significant differences have been observed between climatic stations located at short distances, showing the convenience of having agroclimatic stations in the most important vineyard areas and in the most suitable areas of the winery districts of the cities to adequately characterize their microclimate in relation to the wine industry.

Nagórka, Piotr. "Iberian-Romance borrowings into English in the fortified wine industry: Implications for wine educators." Revista de Lenguas para Fines Específicos, no. 29 (June 14, 2023): 94–109. http://dx.doi.org/10.20420/rlfe.2023.618.

Abstract:
English tends to be regarded as sufficient for communication in numerous fields. This includes industrieswhose progress has been reliant on communication in languages other than English, in which English has been useful in matters of trade. A notable example is the microfield of fortified wines, where primary languages include Portuguese (madeira and port) and Spanish (sherry). Withthe English corpus showing unassimilated borrowings from the Iberian-Romance languages, and with wine schoolsoffering their students little opportunity to learn these languages, it seemed reasonable to provide numerical evidence of the presence of these borrowings in professional communication in English to see if potential comprehensionproblems among students, resulting from professional discourse being filled with foreign words, may be significant. The (corpus-driven)study of concept systems in the areas of madeira, port and sherry has led to the creation of English-language models containing loanwords from Portuguese and Spanish in varying proportions. The models have been explored to demonstrate to what extent English may be considered sufficient for (effective) communication in each of the areas of the fortified wine industry, while dependent on borrowings from the industry’sprimary languages. The numbers of loanwords in the descriptions of madeira, port and sherryhave indicated the degree to which wine students can rely on their knowledge of English for communication in their target professions while revealing their potential needs for Portuguese and Spanish. These findings inform applied language sciences on the scale of borrowings in professional discourse of an important sector of the wine industry, with Spanish identified as a relatively more productive source of unassimilated borrowings than Portuguese. The results offeran insight for educational programme developers to consider the inclusion of Portuguese and Spanish classes in curricula prepared for students pursuing degrees in winemaking and related fields who have chosen the specialization of fortified wines.

Text in English with summary and keywords in English and Afrikaans
The International Organization for Standardization - ISO 14001 environmental standard addresses facets of environmental performance. The implementation of ISO 14001:2015 is aligned with various risks and opportunities, the identification and addressing of which is key in the successful implementation of the ISO 14001:2015 certification. The Durban region is a pollution ‘hotspot’ within KwaZulu-Natal. Assessment of the opportunities and risks of ISO 14001:2015 implementation within the region is key as it can potentially assist with proactive mitigation of risks and the effective utilization of opportunities. The aim of the study is to understand SHERQ (Safety, Health, Environmental, Risk and Quality) managerial perspectives of opportunities and risks of ISO 14001:2015 implementation in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. The following objectives were outlined: To identify ISO 14001 implementation opportunities and risks internationally and nationally by means of an extensive review of international as well as national literature sources, to generate an evaluation framework to assess SHERQ managerial perspectives of risks and opportunities of ISO 14001:2015 implementation within Durban and to analyse SHERQ managerial responses to the ISO 14001:2015 implementation risks and opportunities within the Durban region. The methods included identifying primary opportunities and risks in ISO 14001:2015 from the literature review through an evaluation framework, thereafter, presenting these in questionnaires distributed among SHERQ managers in Durban via email and LinkedIn. Of 62 questionnaires distributed, 42 participants responded. The respondent’s perspectives were assessed through SPSS identifying key risks and opportunities. Objective 1 was achieved through the literature review in which ISO 14001 implementation risks and opportunities were identified. Objective 2 was achieved by generating the evaluation framework which assimilated implementation risks and opportunities. Objective 3 was achieved through the analysis of the responses of respondents to ISO 14001:2015 implementation risks and opportunities. Study results showed that, in line with international reports, 57.2% of all respondents agreed that the maintenance costs of compliance to the standard are high and 76.2% of respondents shared the perspective that company resources are better managed. Respondents were more agreeable to positive statements, indicating opportunities outweighing the risks. Furthermore, despite the risks, there are opportunities from an industry perspective such as increased investor inputs and increased top management involvement. A follow up study is recommended in the Durban region addressing ISO 14001 implementation risks, opportunities, and their investment impacts in order to further hone in on the organizational implications of certification. From an academic standpoint, multiple studies have posited that ISO 14001:2015 implementation resulted in improved financial outcomes but are associated with high implementation costs and it is recommended that a critical cost versus profits analysis into ISO 14001:2015 implementation be undertaken in the Durban region.

Abstract surface films on ageing. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of lM NaCl, phosphate buffer, and sodium lauryl sulphate on the surface properties of 1% and 2% carboxymethyl cellulose solutions. The surface shear modulus was determined using an oscillating ring surface shear rheometer and the surface tension using a Kruss tensiometer Kl2. Results suggest that carboxymethyl cellulose solutions formed elastic films the strength of which were decreased by addition of NaCl, sodium lauryl sulphate or use of a phosphate buffer, pH 1. 9. The failure of NaCl to increase the surface shear modulus of solutions, as has previously been demonstrated for gum acacia, may be due to alterations in the 6 point of the carboxymethyl cellulose solutions.

Her meteoric rise to her role as chairwoman and CEO of the nation's fifth largest homebuilder with more than $7.5 billion in 2021 revenues is a testament to her business acumen, and the opportunities she has created for women in her industry is legendary. Sheryl embodies what is referred to as “authentic leadership.” Everything about how Sheryl does business, how she shows up, is authentic. She elevates others regardless of gender, laying the foundation for their pathways to success. Sheryl is changing the face and nature leadership and doing so by example. This chapter will trace Sheryl's ascent to her unprecedented role in homebuilding, expose the challenges she has faced, and spotlight the leadership opportunities she has created for other women in the homebuilding industry.

Abstract:
Abstract Rapid thixotropic recovery is an important factor in the production of multi-layer dairy desserts. Therefore the thixotropy of gels and model dairy desserts containing i-carrageenan has been studied. The results of thixotropic recovery in a rheometer after: i) gelation under shear and ii) subsequent cold shearing are compared for aqueous gels, milk gels and model dairy desserts. These measurements are compared with the recovery of samples sheared during processing on a pilot plant. Thixotropic recovery was never complete and appeared to be divided into a fast and a slow component. Both the viscosity during geiation under shear and the kinetics of recovery can be scaled, so that results for all shear rates form a single master-curve. For cold shearing of already formed gels the maturation time before shearing was not a significant factor for aqueous or milk gels, but caused significant differences in the final texture of model dairy desserts treated on a pilot plant.

Abstract:
Abstract A combination of viscoelastic measurements and light microscopy has been used to investigate the specific properties of potato starch pastes. The influence of various shear and heat treatments has been evaluated in the concentration range 4% to 10%.The microstructure of potato starch pastes that had been subjected to a minimum amount of shear was completely dominated by swollen granules. Practically all of the water was taken up by the granules during gelatinisation. The diffusion of amylase from the granules seemed to be hindered by the extensive swelling of the granules. Shearing completely changed the viscoelastic behaviour and the structural character. The transition in viscoelastic behaviour on shearing corresponded with the point where fragments of the granules were dispersed in a continuous phase of solubilised starch. Autoclaved starch pastes, in which the granules were dissolved by heating, showed a viscoelastic behaviour similar to that of the sheared pastes. A microscale demixing of amylose and amylopectin occurs within the phase of solubilised starch.

Abstract:
Abstract Response surface methodology was used to optimize the aqueous extraction of polysaccharides from flaxseed. Temperature, pH and seed/water ratio were the major parameters affecting yield, chemical composition and rheological characteristics of the crude gum extract. Optimum conditions for extraction were a temperature of 85-90°C and a neutral pH (6.5-7). Seed/water ratio had a smaller effect on yield and properties of flaxseed gum than temperature and pH. Flaxseed gum extracted under optimum conditions gave relatively high yield (7.9%) and contained over 80% carbohydrates. Using ion exchange chromatography, on a DEAEcellulose column, the crude flaxseed gum was dialyzed and further separated into a neutral and an acidic fraction. Protein content, minerals, monosaccharide composition and uronic acid levels of flaxseed gum fractions were determined. Further structural information and molecular size distributions of the gum and its fractions were obtained by methylation analysis, 13C NMR and gel filtration chromatography. Flaxseed polysaccarides exhibited shear thinning and weak gel properties at concentrations above 1% (w/w). The neutral flaxseed gum fraction (NFG) was of higher molecular size and showed similar shear thinning behavior as the crude and dialyzed gums. The acidic fraction, on the other hand, consisted of low molecular size polymers and exhibited Newtonian-like flow behavior.

Abstract The sol-gel transition zone of mixtures of a galactomannan(locust bean gum or guar gum) with JC-carrageenan has been studied by oscillatory shear and viscosity measurements at 1s0c. Phase diagrams were established for these blends, relating the total polymer concentration of the mixed system to the JC-carrageenan/galactomannan ratio. From these phase diagrams, the JC-carrageenan content at which the sol-gel transition takes place can be estimated. This was found to be constant, whatever the total polymer concentration investigated and was lower than in the case of JC-carrageenan alone.

Abstract:
Abstract The viscoelastic behaviour of polysaccharide mixtures can be investigated using oscillatory shear measurements or transient experiments and compared to that of their individual components. As examples, mixtures of a galactomannan (guar gum, locust bean gum) with another polysaccharide (xanthan gum or K-carrageenan) are described. Depending upon the polysaccharides and the composition ratio, viscoelastic behaviour changes noticeably. At the optimum of the synergistic effect, that is at a polysaccharide/galactomannan ratio of the order of 50/50, strong gels are obtained. However, their viscoelastic behaviour suggests that the molecular mechanisms underlying the properties cannot be limited to a single type of interaction. On the other hand, peculiar viscoelastic behaviour is experienced with ratios as low as 1/99, irrespective of the type of galactomannan (guar gum or locust bean gum). Despite the high content in galactomannan, the properties cannot be compared to those of macromolecular solutions such as displayed by the galactomannan alone. Typically, the behaviour is solid-like as can be seen in oscillatory shear at low frequency as well as at relatively long times in creep measurements. This means that a weak gel has been formed. The effects of temperature on the properties of xanthan/galactomannan mixtures show that those gels melt at a temperature of ∼60°C, well below the conformational transition of xanthan molecules. This clearly suggests that melting of xanthan is not required to induce melting of the mixture as usually believed. All these results are discussed on the basis of current models that have been proposed for the understanding of the mechanisms involved in synergistic interactions between polysaccharides.

Abstract:
This chapter analyses the development of container shipping from the mid 1960s onwards. It seeks to answer what were the underlying reasons for, and the global impact of the rapid diffusion of containerisation in the liner shipping industry. It also considers the way containerisation altered the relationship between shipowners, other modes of transport, ports, port systems, and cargo-acquiring agencies. It concludes by suggesting the sheer scale of the impact of containerisation on the landscape, shape, and role of the shipping has moved the industry beyond national interests and into a global necessity.

Abstract:
Production buildings constitute a specific section of vernacular architecture, with distinct characteristics. In Andalusia, within this group, the architecture of wine, acquires an important relevancne, the wine cellars. They are a large number of buildings, which were built in the 18th, and 19th centuries. This happened when traditional Andalusian wine production was transformed into a modern wine industry. An industrial development generated a vast architectural ensemble of unique characteristics. This has been studied especially in the Sherry wine region, but it is also present in other regions such as Montilla-Moriles or El Condado de Huelva. The architectural, and industrial wine development in the 19th century was fundamentally based on the repetition of a specific model: the basilica cellar. A simplified formal, and constructive system that comes from the standardisation of the vernacular cellar, and that establishes early points of convergence with the industrial building. A model that continues the tradition in terms of construction, and structure, but conceptually modern in its modular, and repeatable condition. Its reiteration, and extreme simplification made possible the construction of large industrial complexes, and the city transformation. The industrial importance achieved by the wine agro-industry, and the vernacular quality of its architecture introduce different references in Spanish industrial historiography.

Abstract:
This paper presents wind speed measurements collected at 40m to 200m above sea-level to support the New England Aqua Ventus I 12 MW Floating Offshore Wind Farm to be located 17km offshore the Northeast United States. The high-altitude wind speed data are unique and represent some of the first measurements made offshore in this part of the country which is actively being developed for offshore wind. Multiple LiDAR measurements were made using a DeepCLiDAR floating buoy and LiDARs located on land on a nearby island. The LiDARs compared favorably thereby confirming the LiDAR buoy measurements. Wind speed shear profiles are presented. The measurements are compared against industry standard mesoscale model outputs and offshore design codes including the American Bureau of Shipping, American Petroleum Institute, and DNV-GL guides. Significant variation in the vertical wind speed profile occurs throughout the year. This variation is not currently addressed in offshore wind design standards which typically recommend the use of only a few values for wind shear in operational and extreme conditions. The mean wind shears recorded were also higher than industry recommended values. Additionally, turbulence measurements made from the LiDAR, although not widely accepted in the scientific community, are presented and compared against industry guidelines.

Abstract:
The emergence and use of social media has redefined the nature and reach of vocal minorities. It has meant that communities are better engaged, informed, and networked than ever before. It can take a long time to build the trust necessary for social license, and today’s digital citizen expects engagement across many platforms in order for that trust to be maintained. Though social media sites are comparatively recent phenomena, the sheer weight of statistics means they are a potent force in the information age. Pipeline companies may strategize to be passive monitors of social media or to be active and engaged participants. Companies should bear in mind, however, that poorly-formulated strategies may be as damaging as having no social media presence at all. This paper will highlight some of the hazards of an inability to evolve in the area of social media; such as the dangers leaving information voids, potential disproportionate representation of opposition versus support, and the potential of the regulatory bar being raised with each new application that includes social media statistics as a measure of the efficacy of a stakeholder engagement program. The paper employs case-study analysis of successful utilization of social media, and focuses on challenges from activists and project opponents whose astute use of social media has mobilized previously disconnected groups, and shaped debates in a way that places the resource and pipeline industry at a potential disadvantage.

Abstract:
Review question / Objective: a. Question • What kind of mental health services that international students can access in UK higher education? b. Objectives • to systematically search and identify the range of mental health services that international students in UK higher education can access. • to gather and display evidence on health care and services to maintain or enhance mental health conditions of mental health services in the UK. • to collect clusters of existing evidence and gaps to inform the potential literature review design. Background: Mental health is already a significant global issue in higher education (Alonso et al., 2018; Auerbach et al., 2016a, 2016b; Mortier et al., 2018). As the WHO argued, there is no health without mental health (DH, 2011; Prince et al., 2007; WHO, 2018, 2021, 2022a). Higher education students who are far away from home, lack social support and face language and cultural differences are the vulnerable populations in terms of mental health compared with home students (Blackmore et al., 2019; Forbes-Mewett & Sawyer, 2016, 2019; Minutillo et al., 2020; Sachpasidi & Georgiadou, 2018; Sherry et al., 2010). As a critical industry, UK higher education has the second-largest group of international higher education students globally (Department for Education & Department for International Trade, 2021; QS, 2019; QS Enrolment Solutions, 2021; Universities UK, 2021a, 2021b). However, compared with home students, international students are less likely to use mental health services in UK higher education. Attention to the mental health conditions of international students in UK higher education has more possibility to be improved in this country (HESA, 2021; Orygen, 2020; Quinn, 2020).

Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), December 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0011991.

Full text
Abstract:
The project aims to address the need for an inorganic coating composite for corrosion protection of pipelines in an aggressive environment. The inorganic coating does not generate CO2 emission or volatile organic content (VOC). Inorganic coatings are frequently used in the construction industry as anti-corrosion coatings, which are effective, chemically inert, hard, and thermally stable. In this study, microfiber reinforcement and Nano-modification were used to improve the performance of the inorganic coating system. The research work integrates both laboratory testing and numerical simulations. The major tasks conducted are 1) development of an inorganic coating with Nano modification; 2) accelerated corrosion testing; 3) durability and adhesion strength testing; 4) shear testing of coating with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), and 5) analytical study of composite repair system of the pipeline.

Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/41781.

Full text
Abstract:
For decades, researchers have sought to understand the adhesion of ice to surfaces so that low-cost ice mitigation strategies can be developed. Presently, the field of ice adhesion is still without formal standards for performing ice adhesion tests. The U.S. Army Corps Engineers’ Research and Development Center’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (ERDC-CRREL) has a longstanding history as an independent third party for ice adhesion testing services. Most notably, CRREL’s Zero-Degree Cone Test (ZDCT) has been an industry favorite for more than 30 years. Despite its wide acceptance, the ZDCT contains some shortcomings, namely that freshwater ice is formed on the surface of interest within the confines of an annular gap. To address this limitation, CRREL developed and uses the Ice Adhesion Peel Test (IAPT) for testing ice adhesion. This test employs an open planar substrate from which the ice can be removed under either tensile or shear loading, thereby allowing ice to be grown directly on the target substrate without the use of molds. The IAPT configuration is therefore amenable to different ice types and geometries and will provide utility to research studies that aim to develop surface treatments to mitigate ice in a wide range of environments. This report describes the IAPT and its use for characterizing the ice adhesion properties of materials.

EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION ON THE STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR OF CORRODED SELF-DRILLING SCREW CONNECTIONS IN COLD-FORMED STEEL STRUCTURES. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, August 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/icass2020.p.229.

Full text
Abstract:
"Cold-formed steel (CFS) self-drilling screw connections are popular in the construction industry due to rapid fastening and ease of installation. However, the corrosion damage of CFS structures can significantly reduce mechanical properties, affecting the safety and durability of such structures. Therefore, this research investigates the effect of corrosion on the behavior of CFS connections experimentally. This paper presents a total of 36 new experiments on different types of CFS self-drilling screws (12 and 14 gauge) and steel sheet thickness (2.5 mm). Half of the tests were for corroded specimens, and the remaining half were for non-corroded specimens. Further, one to two screws per arrangement connecting the steel sheets with a yield strength of 450MPa were tested. Screws were immersed for 31 days, and the CFS plates were immersed for 8 weeks in a corrosion chamber before the tests were conducted. The experimental tests found that the shear strength of single-screw and double-screw specimens was reduced by 43%, on average for all investigated screw series."

STABILITY PERFORMANCE AND WIND TUNNEL TEST OF STEEL HYPERBOLIC COOLING TOWER CONSIDERING SKINNED EFFECT. The Hong Kong Institute of Steel Construction, September 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.18057/ijasc.2023.19.3.10.

Full text
Abstract:
With the development of industry, cooling towers play a very important role in thermal power generation, and steel cooling towers are being used more widely. The surface of cooling towers is covered with profiled panels, and the skinned effect on the mechanical performance and stability of the structure should be considered. At present, most studies on steel cooling towers have not considered the skinned effect. In steel cooling towers, the skin panels are usually connected to members by self-tapping screws., the shearing test of self-tapping screw connection is carried out considering different screw diameters and plate thicknesses to obtain the shear stiffness of the screws. Then, three FE models of steel hyperbolic cooling towers are established and compared: in Mode–1, the skin panel is not considered; in Model–2, the panel and the member node are rigidly connected; in Model–3, the spring elements are established to simulate the shearing and tension stiffness of self-tapping screws connecting skin panel and members. Based on the finest Model–3, a parametric analysis is done to investigate the effect of the skinned effect on the overall structural stability. Considering different landform types and the roughness of the inner and outer surfaces, a total of 18 measurement conditions are tested in the wind tunnel to study the outer and internal wind pressure coefficients. Furthermore, based on the wind tunnel test, the wind-induced response analysis of steel hyperbolic cooling towers is performed.
