Two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, with large second-order nonlinear susceptibility, are currently growing as an ideal candidate for fulfilling tunable nanoscale coherent light through the second-order nonlinear optical parametric processes. However, the atomic thickness of 2D layered materials leads to poor field confinement and weak light-matter interaction at nanoscale, resulting in low nonlinear conversion efficiency. Here, hybrid three-dimensional (3D) spiral WSe2 plasmonic structures are fabricated for highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (S

We demonstrate a discretely tunable multiwavelength visible laser through second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum frequency generation (SFG) of multiorder Stokes lasers generated from an external Raman laser oscillator. The Raman laser oscillator, driven by a 1064 nm laser with an energy of 120 mJ, is based on a cascade of Ba(NO3)2 and two axial orthogonal KGd(WO4)2 crystals. Through adjusting the angle of the SHG/SFG crystal, we obtain 16 visible wavelengths with a wide range from 579.5–658.4 nm. The enhancement of second-harmonic generation (SHG) efficiency by urea doping in tristhioureazinc(II) sulfate (ZTS) single crystals and its correlation with crystalline perfection have been investigated. The presence of dopant has been confirmed and analysed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The influence of urea doping at different concentrations on crystalline perfection has been thoroughly assessed by high-re

Abstract:
In this thesis, we demonstrate, theoretically, that, by depositing a regular fused-silica fiber with optical nonlinear molecules, strong and thermodynamically stable SHG can be obtained. Our experiments also provide strong evidence for the theory. Start from the basic Maxwell equation, we derive the SHG efficiency that the excited power translates into the SHG signal. According to the SHG efficiency equation, a small radius and a long length will help to result in a high SHG efficiency, which also increases with the excited power. We fabricate silica fiber tapers with radius less than 5 μm

This thesis investigates the cross-section and member behaviour of cold-formed stainless steel RHS and SHS elements and proposes an alternative and more efficient design approach. Combined with aesthetic appeal, exceptional mechanical properties and excellent corrosion and fire resistances, efficient design methods present stainless steel as an attractive alternative to the usual carbon steel for structural applications. Exhaustive studies of the nonlinear stress-strain behaviour and the analytical modelling of the response are presented for different stainless steel alloys. The study was bas

However, today's secure systems and protocols do not rely on just one, but a suite of many cryptographic applications that are expected to work in a correct and reliable manner. In this work,

Many rural communities in South Africa do not have running water or electricity. The fetching and heating of water is therefore a time consuming and expensive daily ritual. The use of energy sources such as wood or coal are not readily available and cause environmental pollution. Whilst this can mostly be attributed to a high system cost, current designs also do not cater for specific rural problems such as the transporting or purification of water.
