Abstract:
The Sixteen Kingdoms was a period of political disintegration in medieval China. Foreign rulers of Wu Hu (“Five Barbarian Tribes”) captured the northern China during the 3rd – 5th centuries and established independent states through continuous military actions. This thesis aims at studying the relationship between the emperors and Buddhist monks in the Northwest empires in the Sixteen Kingdoms Period, including the Former Liang (320-376), the Western Qin (385-400; 409-431), the Later Liang (386-403), the Northern Liang (397-439) and the Xia (407-431), by developing a theoretical model called “Hourglass Model”. The model provides a holistic framework for investigating not only the emperors’ changing attitudes towards Buddhism but also the dissemination of the Dharma by monks. In addition, the concept of “data visualization” is implemented to re-interpret various historical sources. The complex interaction among imperial clans and Buddhist practitioners is further analyzed with computer-aided historical research methods. This thesis hopes to reveal the inspiring nature of the political religion in China’s early medieval age and expand the scope of Chinese Studies by rethinking about foreign rulers and Buddhist monks’ roles in reshaping and vitalizing the Chinese civilization. Moreover, this study develops alternative approaches to the research on the history of Chinese Buddhism, and attempts to shed new lights on theories and research methodology.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In tracing the experience of Chinese Canadians in the 20th Century, we need to look further back into its history. Most people believe that the increasing number of immigrants from Hong Kong, Taiwan and China in the 1980s and 1990s played the most important roles in the social and economic changes during the latest decades of the 20th Century. The contribution of the Chinese Canadians settlement throughout the 20th Century should also be considered as it marks the beginning of the rise of their social status and identity in Canada. Although the Chinese Canadians earned their fame and status since the 1980s, they had been racially discriminated for more than a century. To probe into the situation, the social and political situations in the Chinese Canadian community will be meticulously analyzed and their contribution in difference aspects examined. In addition, other minority ethnic groups, such as the Japanese, Jewish and Indian, will be used as a comparison to demonstrate the change of policies towards the Chinese in Canada. In doing so, both English and Canadian Chinese newspapers will be used to illustrate the cultural difference between the “whites” and “non-whites”. To illustrate the changes, the 20th Century will be break into three parts. In most of the pre-Second World War period, the Chinese community was isolated from the mainstream community with their activities largely confined to Chinatowns in cities, such as Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto and so on. For the Chinese living in small townships, such as Prince Rupert, Richmond and so on, their daily life will also be examined. When Canada declared war on Japan on 7th December 1941, Canada became an ally of China during the war. A sentiment of acceptance of the Chinese in the mainstream society began to take shape. Some of the Chinese chose to contribute their efforts to Canada by joining the Canadian Armed Forces and went into battle alongside the White Canadians. After the Second World War, Canada adopted a new policy towards the minority ethnic groups and Chinese Canadians started to enjoy political equality. In May 1947, the Canadian Government repealed the Chinese Immigration Act. In 1967, after the liberalization of the Canadian immigration policy, the Chinese, once again, were allowed to immigrate freely to Canada as an individual. With granted full citizenship, the Chinese social and political status began to change. In 1957, Douglas Jung, a Canadian born Chinese, was elected a Member of the Parliament, which can be seen as the beginning of the Chinese involvement in the political arena of the Canadian community. Since then, Chinese Canadians were able to achieve equality in the society. Based on documentary accounts and oral history research, this thesis re-constructed the history of Canadian Chinese involvement in the 20th Century and the change of their identity and social status thereafter.

Abstract:

Cheung, Hosum. "Toward a schizo-natural writing : exploring the production of nature in Dung Kai-Cheung's Natural histories trilogy." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2019. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/705.

Full text
Abstract:
How should nature be written? Writing has long been a way for people to understand nature. Still, we have come to an age that we need to reconceptualize our relation with nature. Nature can no longer be regarded as a passive stage upon which human beings act. How should we understand nature so that nature is made inanimate? I propose that the solution, known as “Schizo-Natural Writing,” can be found in Dung Kai-cheung’s Natural Histories Trilogy. Hong Kong is commonly seen as a city. Correspondingly, when it comes to Hong Kong literature, the term appears frequently will be “city writing”. It is not surprising, given that Hong Kong has always been recognised as a highly-developed city, one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Famous literary works in Hong Kong like Xi Xi’s My City (西西,我城), A Dictionary of Two Cities co-written by Hon Lai Chu and Dorothy Tse Hiu Hong (韓麗珠、謝曉虹,雙城辭典), Wong Bik Wan’s The City of Lost (黃碧雲,失城), just to name some. This phenomenon is closely related to the historical background of Hong Kong. According to Chan (2009), the connection between Hong Kong literature and its cityscape can be dated back to 1950s. Though it does not mean that there are no non-urban writings, those were not in the mainstream. However, in 2000s one of the most influential local writers, Dung Kai Cheung (1967 -), has begun his Natural Histories Trilogy. He is the director in The House of Hong Kong Literature, a folk organisation of local literature. His publication includes, Androgyny: Evolution of a Non-existent Species (1996), a story about a female scientist who went into the wild and sought a nonexistent species, named as androgyny and Atlas: The Archaeology of an Imaginary City (1997), an imaginary archaeology in the future Hong Kong, which has been translated into English. During 2005 to 2010, he published the Natural Histories Trilogy, including firstly, the History of the Adventures of Vivi and Vera (2018, which titled in Chinese, 天工開物.栩栩如真), secondly, the Histories of Time: The Light of Nga Chi (2007, 時間繁史.啞瓷之光) and thirdly, on the Origin of Species: The Rebirth of Bui Bui - The Age of Apprenticeship (2010, 物種源始. In the trilogy, Dung Kai-cheung, echoing Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of “nature=industry”, highlighted the productivity of nature, or the naturing of nature. As such, he no longer writes nature. He writes schizo-naturally. I further adopted the term “ecology”, which on the one hand pointed out the close relation between the item produced during the schizo-natural writing; on the other hand, echoed Guattari’s the Three Ecology. In this thesis, there are four parts investigating four types of ecology: mental ecology, social ecology, environmental ecology and spatiotemporal ecology. Through examining the trilogy, love, being standing outside oneself, is advocated to be the way out of the fragmented world. Keywords: Dung Kai-cheung, the Natural Histories Trilogy, nature writing, Gilles Deleuze, Ecology

Sha, Ran. "The determinants of national and provincial economic growth in China / Sha Ran." Thesis, North-West University, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1171.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the determinants of economic growth in China since 1978, with a focus on the determinants of spatial growth. A study of the theories of economic growth shows that both proximate and fundamental factors can contribute to economic growth. In the case of China, institutional changes are the keys to the Chinese transitional economy. Given the special nature of China's economy, the main institutional reforms since 1978 are examined, together with the gradual transition process. Furthermore, from the overview of empirical literature, it is found that the proximate determinants such as initial gross domestic product (GDP), investment, population growth, human capital and openness are determinants of economic growth in China based on the findings in cross-country growth literature. From growth accounting exercises, capital formation and total factor productivity (TFP) growth can be seen to play important roles in the rapid economic growth in China. However, while the nationwide economic growth is impressive, the pace of reform and economic development has been uneven across provinces. In the existing literature, geography and preferential policy are emphasised as particular factors that affect coastal-interior disparity. This study incorporates the economic variables identified as important stimulants to growth, drawing on major findings in the study of convergence and economic growth to estimate the determinants of regional economic growth in China. To address the weaknesses of using ordinary least squares (OLS) for cross-country regression analyses, fixed-effects ordinary least squares (OLS) and random-effects generalised least squares (GLS) panel data estimators are applied to provincial data from 1994 to 2003. It is concluded that the convergence hypothesis does not hold in China, and that export, investment, education, foreign direct investment (FDI) growth and coastal dummy have a positive effect on regional GDP per capita growth in China while population growth affects the annual growth rate negatively.

Montanari, Giulia.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Rap is an extremely popular form of modern music that is notorious for incorporating themes of guns and violence into the lyrics. Early rap was mainly party or dance music until the mid-80s when structural shifts in social conditions brought feelings of hopelessness and frustration into black inner city communities and youth culture. These feelings now find expression in rap lyrics. This thesis uses rap lyrics as qualitative data to understand the plight of urban black youth. Rap music can be seen as a form of resistance for young African Americans who have historically never had such a medium to express their lived experiences and frustrations with society. The rap performance becomes a stage where the powerless become powerful by using the microphone as a symbolic AK-47 and words as weapons in the form of symbolic hollow point cartridges. This Thesis examines the contemporary African American experience, its reflection in the lyrics of rap music, and its fascination with guns, violence and death. A key theme is while rap lyrics sometimes seem radical and frightening to the mainstream, they often express lines of analysis and understanding that have been widely discussed in conventional sociological literature.

Abstract:
The Man Mo Temple(文武廟)Compound on Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan, which comprises three blocks, namely Man Mo Temple, Lit Shing Kung (列聖宮) and Kung Sor(公所), were built in 1847 . The Temple was built mainly for the worship of Man Cheong (God of Literature, 文昌) and Mo Tai (God of Martial Arts, 武帝). It was important assembly hall where Chinese people discussed issues and resolved disputes in early colonial period. The Temple represented the traditional social organization and religious practices of the Chinese community in the past. The aim of this study examines the development of Man Mon Temple from 1840s to 1908. This thesis contains six main chapters. The first chapter is literature review of previous researches for Man Mo Temple, as well as presents the objectives and methodology of the thesis. The second chapter explores the reasons for its establishment. The third chapter describes the development of architecture of temple. The forth chapter describes and analyses the Guandi worship (關帝信仰)and Wenchang belief (文昌信仰)in Hong Kong. The fifth chapter evaluates the significance of Man Mo Temple on different periods. The temple provided religious service, also as sponsor the charitable work of the Chinese community. It analyses the change of the temple’s function in colonial period. Music Therapy
Ph.D.
This study examined how Mary Priestley musically implemented 15 Analytical Music Therapy (AMT) techniques for exploring conscious material, accessing unconscious material, and strengthening the ego. Using the Priestley archives at Temple University, the author listened to 96 recorded examples of individual AMT sessions with 31 adult clients that were made between the years 1975-1991 to examine and aurally identify the musical phenomena and patterns occurring in the musical implementation of AMT techniques. The results of the study present clinical considerations necessary for applying each AMT technique and the clinical/musical roles of the analytical music therapist. Finally, this study presents distinctions between traditional and contemporary AMT practice and implications for AMT training and supervision.

Abstract:
This study examined the moderating impact of gender on the use of humor during employment interviews. Consistent with expectancy violation theory, I hypothesized that the use of humor by female candidates would cause more extreme evaluations than the use of humor by male candidates. In other words, when positive (affiliative) humor is used, females will be rated more positively than males, but when negative (aggressive) humor is used, females will be rated more negatively than males. I also hypothesized that the relationship between humor condition and evaluations would be partially mediated by state positive affect. I also posed a research question regarding how recall of what was said in the interview would relate to humor and evaluations. This experiment was a 2 (gender) x 3 (affiliative humor, aggressive humor, no humor) factorial design. Participants received brief interviewer training, interviewed a confederate playing another participant as the applicant, and then completed measures. Data from 221 undergraduate students were analyzed. Results demonstrate support of some hypotheses, including a main effect of humor condition on evaluations and partial mediation of state positive affect. Practical and theoretical implications of the findings are discussed.

Art History
M.A.
This study examines three related exhibitions from the spring of 2014: the Whitney Biennial, the Whitney Houston Biennial, and the Last Brucennial, assessing the problematics invoked across all three shows, including representation in the art world; the nexus of contemporary feminist art, theory, and its display; and the role of exhibitions and display in creating meaning in the contemporary art world. The analysis begins with reviews, interviews, and other primary-source documentation of the three shows. The second chapter then situates the projects among an art historical continuum. The third and final chapter of the thesis conducts a theoretical analysis, utilizing methodologies from performance studies and visual cultural studies. The three chapters and their attendant methodologies build toward the conclusion, which suggests that the 2014 Whitney Biennial, Whitney Houston Biennial, and Last Brucennial interact with one another and through a rich, complex web of contemporary art practices and conditions to create meaning and perhaps foment change.

Abstract:

In spinal cord injury the amount of total surviving white matter is known to be strongly related to post injury neurological functions (1). Accurate segmentation of these regions is shown to be critical in terms of developing effective treatment (1). Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) has been shown to be effective in obtaining spinal cord images (2). However challenges still exist in clear separation of gray/white/cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) structures within the cord using DTI. The purpose of this study is to (1) test a semi-automatic tissue segmentation algorithm based on grow cut algorithm (GCA), to classify CSF, gray and white matter in conventional T2 weighted MRI and Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) images in pediatric spinal cord injury (SCI) subjects, and (2) to compare the results of semi-automatic GCA segmentation with manually segmented spinal cord data performed on various DTI images by a board certified pediatric neuroradiologist. Results show that semi-automatic segmentation of the spinal cord using GCA was successfully implemented. Qualitatively, good separation of cord/CSF was seen in B0, CFA and FA maps (of a representative patient with SCI and a control using this GCA method. They demonstrate more homogeneous signal within the cervical spinal cord as well as greater conspicuity of the cord and surrounding CSF interface. Quantitative analysis of images segmented using GCA and manual segmentation between and within the groups showed no significant differences in CFA (p=0.1347) and FA (p=0.1442) images but B0 (p=0.0001) images showed statistically significant differences. Overall, in both the controls and subjects with SCI, quantitative and qualitative analysis showed a superior semi-automated segmentation on CFA and FA images over a B0 image the using modified GCA. Key words: Grow Cut Algorithm (GCA), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), segmentation, Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI), cervical spinal cord, cerebral-spinal fluid (CSF).

M.S.
The purpose of the study is to explore the relationship between participation and well-being in mothers with SCI. Twenty-nine women with a spinal cord injury participated in the study. The inclusion criteria was being a mother with a spinal cord injury living in the community and actively parenting at least one child under the age of 12 who were currently living with them. Three standardized instruments were used for this study; the Parental Participation Scale, the Role Physical and Role Emotional subscales of the SF-36, and the Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale and six subscales. A correlation matrix was performed examining the relationship between General Role Participation and Well-being for mothers with SCI using Pearson's correlations. The overall well-being scale score for women with spinal cord injury significantly correlated with role physical and role emotional scales indicating the greater the well-being the greater the role participation (less limitation for physical or emotional reasons). Positive relations with others, environmental mastery, and self-acceptance subscales were significantly correlated with role physical and role emotional. In addition, autonomy, personal growth, and purpose in life were significantly correlated with the subscale of role emotional. Another correlation matrix was performed examining the relationship between well-being and satisfaction with parental participation, using Pearson's correlations. The total and all the subscales of well-being (positive relations with others, autonomy, environmental mastery, personal growth, purpose in life and self-acceptance) were significantly correlated with the satisfaction subscale of the parental participation scale. Occupational therapists can utilize these findings when working with mothers with spinal cord injury by addressing the personal well-being factors (such as self-acceptance, environmental mastery and positive relations with others) that significantly contribute to greater participation and satisfaction with parental participation. Also, occupational therapists can advocate in the community/home to make needed environmental modifications to normalize participation, as well as facilitating interpersonal support through educating family and friends to promote the well-being of these women.

Abstract:
Arterial hypertension it is the leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Its prevalence appears to be about 30-45% of the general population. Despite current knowledge the long-term adherence to cardiovascular drugs is still low in hypertension treatment. The Brazilian red propolis has a large content of phenols compounds such as isoflavones, this have been reported to exert beneficial effects in cardiovascular disease, including hypertension. Therefore the objective of this study was to investigate cardiovascular effects from a red propolis gastroretentive system (ESPV, patents register numbers BR 10 2012 013590-6 A2 and WO 2014/186851) in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). The HPLC-UV analysis showed in ESPV chemical composition the presence propolis chemical markers: daidzein, biochanin A, liquiritigenin, pinobanksin, isoliquiritigenin, formononetin and pinocembrina. The cytotoxicity from ESPV was evaluate on macrophage J774 by MTT assay and exhibited IC50 = 72.86 μg/mL. Intravenous injection of ESPV caused a hipotensive dose-dependent effect at 0.1, 0.5, 1, 5 and 10 mg/kg, unchanges heart rate in conscious SHR. The hypotensive effect was not affected by anesthesia. In intact rings of rat mesenteric artery pre-contracted with 10 μM phenylephrine, ESPV induced relaxations (Emax = 100 ± 0.4 %; pD2 = 1.08 ± 0.02 μg/mL) that were affected by endothelium removal, (Emax = 56.7 ± 2 %; pD2 = 1.37 ± 0.04 μg/mL). In an antihypertensive study, ESPV (75 and 150 mg/kg) was orally administered to Juvenile (11-week-old) and young adult (24-week-old) SHRs, and the systolic pressure were measured using the tail-cuff method before and 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after beginning of treatment. Was observed a significant antihypertensive effect from 14th day of treatment only in young adult SHR, with decreased by 56 mmHg compared with baseline systolic blood pressure. Furthermore, the treatment reduced left ventricular hypertrophy in young adult SHR as evident by myocardial morphometry. The vascular function of mesenteric arteries was also investigated at the end of the treatment with ESPV in young adult SHR, the endothelium-independent relaxations to sodium nitroprusside (10-3 to 3.10-4 M) was unchanged compared to control. For other hand, endothelium-dependent relaxations to acetylcholine (10-3 to 3.10-4 M) was markedly improve (Emax = 76.4 ± 3.8% e pD2 = -8.72 ± 3.8 M). We therefore investigated vascular reactivity to acetylcholine (10-3 to 3.10-4 M) also in the presence of the nonspecific NOS inhibitor L-NAME (3.10-3 M), in order to assess NO-dependent relaxation. In these, relaxation response was abolished (Emax = 18.9 ± 1.65% e pD2 = -5.12 ± 0.33 M). Similary, the acetylcholine relaxation in the presence of L-NAME plus a cyclooxygenase antagonist, indomethacin (10-3 M), was too antagonized (Emax = 15.90 ± 1.32 % e pD2 = -5.39 ± 0.24 M), indicating that the response to ESPV treatement involves the enhancement of the nitric oxide via NOS relaxations. These results disclosed that ESPV is effective to lower blood pressure only of young adult SHR, its antihypertensive effect is associated with lowering left ventricular hypertrophy and probably by decrease peripheral vascular resistance, improving endothelial function and increasing the NO-dependent relaxation via NOS.

Abstract:
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the sensing and analysis of a structure to detect abnormal behavior, damage and deterioration during regular operations as well as under extreme loadings. SHM is designed to provide objective information for decision-making on safety and serviceability. This research focuses on the SHM of bridges by developing and integrating novel methods and techniques using sensor networks, computer vision, modeling for damage indices and statistical approaches. Effective use of traffic video synchronized with sensor measurements for decision-making is demonstrated. First, some of the computer vision methods and how they can be used for bridge monitoring are presented along with the most common issues and some practical solutions. Second, a conceptual damage index (Unit Influence Line) is formulated using synchronized computer images and sensor data for tracking the structural response under various load conditions. Third, a new index, Nd , is formulated and demonstrated to more effectively identify, localize and quantify damage. Commonly observed damage conditions on real bridges are simulated on a laboratory model for the demonstration of the computer vision method, UIL and the new index. This new method and the index, which are based on outlier detection from the UIL population, can very effectively handle large sets of monitoring data. The methods and techniques are demonstrated on the laboratory model for damage detection and all damage scenarios are identified successfully. Finally, the application of the proposed methods on a real life structure, which has a monitoring system, is presented. It is shown that these methods can be used efficiently for applications such as damage detection and load rating for decision-making. The results from this monitoring project on a movable bridge are demonstrated and presented along with the conclusions and recommendations for future work.

Abstract:
The themes of empire, nationality, and self-imposed exile constitute underexplored topics in critical discussions of modernist author Malcolm Lowry (1909-1957). Until recently, most academic studies have approached his work from biographical, mythological, and psychoanalytic perspectives. While a few studies have performed historical readings of his novels, such investigations tend, primarily, to focus on his engagement with western literary and theoretical movements of the early twentieth century. Of the few studies that address the cross-cultural reach of his novels, most are limited to discussions of Mexican history and traditions, thus prioritizing a specific geographical region when they might, instead, illuminate the author's career-long engagement with cultural developments on a world scale—historical realignments triggered by wartime anxieties and the impending dissolution of the British Empire. Employing an interpretive framework that synthesizes postcolonial theory, cultural anthropology, and contemporary theories of the transnational, I demonstrate how the exile-heroes of three of Lowry's novels—Ultramarine (1933), Under the Volcano (1947), and Dark as the Grave Wherein My Friend is Laid (1968)—struggle to navigate the experience of social liminality, dramatizing, in the process, an increasingly fraught relationship between English expatriates and imperial models of English national identity. Rejecting the well-known mythical hero's cyclical quest, so often culminating in a triumphant return to society, the Lowrian exile-hero, instead, remains in a liminal state, emblematizing, through persistent cultural questioning, a transnational concept of identity that resists institutionally prescribed models of thought and behavior.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis analyses six novels by different women writers, each of which rewrites an originally androcentric biblical story from a female perspective. These novels are The Red Tent by Anita Diamant, The Garden by Elsie Aidinoff, Leaving Eden by Ann Chamberlin, The Moon under her Feet by Clysta Kinstler, The Wild Girl by Michelle Roberts and Wisdom’s Daughter by India Edghill. By classifying these novels as feminist revisionist fiction, this study considers how they both subvert and revise the biblical narratives they are based on in order to offer readers new and gynocentric alternatives. With the intention of establishing the significance of such an endeavor, the study therefore employs the findings of feminist critique and theology to expose how the Bible, as a sexist text, has inspired, directly or indirectly, many of the patriarchal values that govern Western society and religion. Having established how biblical narratives have promoted and justified visions of women as marginal, subordinate and outside the realm of the sacred, we move on to explore how feminist rewritings of such narratives might function to challenge and transform androcentric ideology, patriarchal myth and phallocentric theology. The aim is to show that the new and different stories constructed within these revisionist novels re-conceptualise and re-imagine women, their place in society and their relation to the divine. Thus, as the title suggests, this thesis ultimately considers how women writers ‘steal’ the original biblical stories and transform them in ways that prove liberating for women.

Full text
Abstract:
Time Dependent Density Functional Theory offers a good accuracy/computational cost ratio among different methods used to predict the electronic structure for molecules of practical interest. The Coupled Electronic Oscillator (CEO) formalism was recently shown to accurately predict Nonlinear Optical (NLO) properties of organic chromophores when combined with Time Dependent Density Functional Theory. Unfortunately, CEO does not lend itself easily to interpretation of the structure activity relationships of chromophores. On the other hand, the Sum Over States formalism in combination with semiempirical wavefunction methods has been used in the past for the design of simplified essential states models. These models can be applied to optimization of NLO properties of interest for applications. Unfortunately, TD-DFT can not be combined directly with SOS because state-to-state transition dipoles are not defined in the linear response TD approach. In this work, a second order CEO approach to TD-DFT is simplified so that properties of double excited states and state-to-state transition dipoles may be expressed through the combination of linear response properties. This approach is termed the a posteriori Tamm-Dancoff approximation (ATDA), and validated against high-level wavefunction theory methods. Sum over States (SOS) and related Two-Photon Transition Matrix formalism are then used to predict Two-Photon Absorption (2PA) profiles and anisotropy, as well as Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) properties. Numerical results for several conjugated molecules are in excellent agreement with CEO and finite field calculations, and reproduce experimental measurements well.
