Shindo-Renmei ("League of the Vassals’ Path") was a paramilitary organization of Japanese origin which was formed in the countryside of the State of São Paulo in the post-war period. This militia acted in the obtuse sense of "preserving the true Japanese spirit" (Yamatodamashi) by fighting what they called "fake enemy propaganda": the acceptance by members of the colony of Japan's "supposed" surrender in the Second World War. For them, to believe in such a thing would mean a violation of the Japanese identity, betraying the country and the emperor. In this case, the only possible remission would be the death. However, little is known about its origin or its desideratum /disintegration. The purpose of this work is, therefore, to rescue the history and memory of Japanese (im)/(e)migration in Brazil, its bitterness and challenges, discourses and policies underlying this process and that led, in the first decades of the twentieth century, to a process of isolation / exclusion / censorship which was very sensitive to the colonist's life situation. However, this doctoral dissertation does not intend to legitimize the creation of Japanese militias, reducing their meaning to a mere response to a situation of repression. Rather, it is about offering new perspectives on the case, as well as exploring the meanders of the Japanese (im)/(e)migration and how the figure of the Japanese immigrant assured himself in the arduous process of guaranteeing his identity / integrity. This inglorious chapter in the history of Brazil, which was marked by traumas and silences, can now be heard and felt through a herculean effort of the historiographic work. Here is the ultimate goal of this research.
Neste caso, a única remissão possível seria a morte.

The present research aims to analyze the ultranationalist associations established by Japanese immigrants dwelling in Brazil during the Second World War, being the most representative association then called Shindo Renmei. This group, estimated to comprise 80% of the immigrants, was not convinced that Japan had been defeated in the war, this originated a conflict between victory-believers and defeat-believers (makegumi-katigumi, in Japanese) inside the Japanese-Brazilian community. The defeat-believers, who knew and spoke about Japan¿s failure, were persecuted, threatened and sometimes murdered by the former, who considered the defeat was a fraud committed by the North-American government. Therefore to the victory-believers, Japan was actually the winner of the war. In order to recompose the ultranationalist associations formation for this investigation, different moments experienced by Japanese immigrants are presented: the restoration of the Meiji Period since 1868; their arrival in Brazil in 1908; also their living conditions marked by economic, cultural, political and social deprivation. By offering a reflection grounded on interviews and researches on this historic period, we intend to contribute to the elucidation of the Shindo Renmei case, that 70 years later is still seen as an object of shame among the Japanese-Brazilians. We shall highlight that this is one from a number of possible reading pieces covering the victorybelievers- defeat-believers movement, which interpretations are inexhaustible.

This dissertation aims at the study of the Shindo Renmei (The Association of the Path of the Subjects). This is a japanese secret society which appeared in S?o Paulo in 1942, quickly moving to other brazilian states. The research revealed that the emergence of the Shindo Renmei was a counter-strategy utilized by the japanese to preserve the japanese ethnicity in the tropics, in other words, to create a japanese Brazil. With the end of the Second World War, the japanese and brazilian-japanese community was divided into the victorious (kachigumi) and the defeat (makegumi). The victorious, formed by members of the Shindo and similar associations, refused to accept the defeat of Japan by the Allied Forces. Furthermore, they started to harass every japanese and his/her descendants who acknowledged that the Rising Sun had lost the war. In some cases, such japanese and brazilian-japanese thought of as the defeat were murdered by the kachigumi. The research showed that the fact that the victorious did not accept the defeat was crucially connected with the identification of a significant part of the japanese with the shintoist religion. According to such religion, the emperor and Japan were protected by the gods, being, therefore, unconquerable. The analysis also shows that the Shindo Renmei had fascist discourse, based on three elements: the cult of leader, intolerance of alterity and appreciation of the historic and national originality.

Full textThis work, which is linked to the Thematic Project History of the Portuguese Language from São Paulo (USP/FAPESP), aims to present the results of research about the social history of Japanese immigrants in São Paulo and Portuguese Language aspects on the first half-century XX. During the research, there was the formation of the corpus, the study of social history which would be responsible for producing writing that refers to the prohibition of foreigness and the identification of genres that make up the dossiers. The background of this thesis begins with the adhesion of Brazil on the Second World War, since a concern with the foreigners, mainly German, Italian and Japanese people, has increased. In this sense, the first of October 1942, was enacted federal law defining crimes against state security on the times of war (Law Decree No. 4766), which initiated investigations on immigrants. The files derived from such research constitutes a corpus of 394 files generated by DEOPS and DOPS / SP selected by the criterion of nationality of the investigated people, namely, Japanese. The súditos do eixo, a pejorative way by which the police treated the Japanese citizens, began to be investigated more thoroughly. During this time, the Japanese were detained by police for the simple fact of communicating Japanese. In addition, investigations are mentioned in documents relating to the prohibition of teaching the Japanese language, so all foreign schools were also closed and associations where these foreigners gathered for leisure and festive activities. The saddest fact is verified with the conflicts between the Japanese themselves in the \'colony\' of São Paulo. The Shindo-Renmei had appeared and its members were called saboteurs because they were exterminating plantations and cultivation of the silkworm, products which contributed to the greatness of the Brazilian economy. This is the objective of this dissertation: to present the social history from documents about Japanese people and also identify the informations about the Standard Portuguese language of São Paulo. In the linguistic aspect, the qualifiers and the ortographic used in the documents, since a recent change of correct writting was imposed on 1943, during the production of documents reviewed.
