Abstract:
The reproductive performance of Sharp-shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus) nesting in southern Quebec was studied during the 1999 and 2000 breeding seasons. In 2000, 37.5% of breeders (equal numbers of males and females) were immature, whereas none were in 1999. In 2000, clutch size and hatching success were 4.4 and 3.1 eggs per nest, respectively. Of 10 pairs monitored in 2000, six hatched at least one chick and five raised young to a bandable age. However, only three pairs successfully fledged at least one young that year, whereas all seven nests observed in 1999 did so. Unseasonable weather in 2000 may have contributed to this decrease in nesting success.
In 2000, levels of organochlorines were measured in blood samples taken from sharpshin females and their young at five of the above-mentioned 10 nests. While most compounds were not detected at all, or at least not at levels likely to affect reproduction, concentrations of DDE and PCB's in these breeding females were much higher than in female migrants previously sampled in the eastern United States or Great Lakes. Whereas global contamination of the environment appears to be the source of PCB exposure, this population may be accumulating DDE on its wintering grounds.
Habitat assessments were conducted at 12 sharpshin nests over both years of the study. Means of the variables measured (among others) were nest tree height, 15.3 m; tree density, 1052/ha; total canopy cover, 86.7%; coniferous cover, 42.95%; and distance to the nearest opening, 17.5 m. Nests were found in a range of forested habitats, but this population did not exhibit a noteworthy degree of plasticity with respect to the measured parameters. That these sharpshins tended to use structurally older stands with more deciduous cover than other populations did may reflect regional differences in habitat availability and/or in the abundance of competitors.

Bruno, Tino. Thesis, Lyon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LYSE3045/document.

Full text
Abstract:
In addition to questions that are inherent to the safety of nuclear installations, the accident at Fukushima Dai’ichi Nuclear Power Plant of March 2011 raised what can be considered a paradox: Japan has embarked on a nuclear adventure even though it has been the victim of a nuclear bomb itself and while it regularly faces natural catastrophes.Furthermore, the Fukushima catastrophe has encouraged some reflexion on the Japanese media, with special focus on the role these have played in the promotion of nuclear energy and in its acceptance by the Japanese public after the Second World War.This study, which belongs to the field of cultural history, aims at understanding through the prism of the media image, in what way Japan has accomplished a transition between Hiroshima (1945) and Tôkaimura (1957); in other words between military nuclear power and civilian nuclear energy, while attaching special importance to how the debate about these two aspects of the nuclear reality has been articulated in the Japanese press. To do this, we analyse the manner in which the big national newspapers: the Asahi Shinbun and Yomiuri Shinbun, dealt with atomic energy during the establishment of the Japanese civilian nuclear project (1945-1957), a pivotal period which started with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and closed with the start-up of the first Japanese experimental nuclear reactor in Tôkaimura. By means of a plan that is structured chronologically around four periods we will try to provide answers to the following question: how was civilian nuclear energy represented in the Japanese national press at the time of its introduction in the archipelago? In the first period (1945-1949), we observe how nuclear energy was represented during the first years following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, at a time that any discussion about atomic bombings was censured by the Allied Forces and that civilian nuclear energy was still in its infancy. In the second period (1949-1952), we analyse how the base of the representations of that energy evolves while the threat of nuclear war surfaces and while the first successes of the production of nuclear energy draw the attention of the Japanese press. Our third period (1953-1955) focuses on three media events which influenced the debate around nuclear energy: the American speech Atoms for Peace; the incident of the tuna fishing boat Daigo Fukuryû Maru and the arrival of the American industrialist John Jay Hopkins at the invitation of Shôriki Matstutarô, the head of the daily newspaper Yomiuri Shinbun. Finally, in our last period (1955-1957) we analyse first of all the manner in which the Yomiuri Shinbun covered the great exhibition on ‘the pacific uses of nuclear energy’ which it had itself co-organized with the United States Information Agency after the Daigo Fukuryû Maru incident, in order to improve the image of the latter. Then, we examine the political debates at the time that Japan began to institutionalize its nuclear civilian project. Lastly we end this part discussing an event that should symbolize the successful conclusion of the Japanese nuclear project: the start-up of the first experimental nuclear reactor in Japan in the village of Tôkaimura

This thesis, a profile of astronomer Vera Rubin, highlights her scientific achievements, most notably the irrefutable evidence she gathered to persuade the astronomical community that galaxies spin at a faster speed than Newton's Universal Law of Gravitation allows. As a result of this finding, astronomers conceded that the universe must be filled with more material than they can see. Scientists call this mysterious substance dark matter. This submission explains the scientific history of dark matter, its acceptance, and the current research being done to test its existence. It also mentions counter theories to the dark matter hypothesis and looks at Vera Rubin's current work and how this research will help astronomers better understand the construction of the cosmos and its evolution.

Mashek, Carrie. "Exploring experiences of Western Cape based Shine volunteers about the Shine Centre programme and the children they support." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/13742.

Full text
Abstract:
The main research questions focused on understanding why people volunteer; their views on the Shine training and Literacy Hour programmes and recommendations that would result in children receiving a high quality education. The findings of the study emphasised the crucial role that volunteers play in the Shine Centre organisation and within the South African education system. These volunteers are a dynamic and diverse group who offer their time for a variety of reasons but are committed to enhancing the literacy rates of primary-aged school children in the Western Cape. Experiences of these community members ranged from gaining skills and techniques from Shine training to working and understanding children with very different backgrounds to themselves. The findings found that there is a high level of satisfaction amongst volunteers with respect to the training and the Literacy Hour sessions. However, there are certain obstacles that volunteers face and which impact on their facilitation of the programme, such as not having the right materials to teach with or a child’s home circumstances, some of which can be very difficult to overcome.

Abolbaghaei, Akram. "Shine-Dalgarno Anti-Shine-Dalgarno Sequence Interactions and Their Functional Role in Translational Efficiency of Bacteria and Archaea." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/35254.

Full text
Abstract:
Translation is a crucial factor in determining the rate of protein biosynthesis; for this reason, bacterial species typically evolve features to improve translation efficiency. Biosynthesis is a finely tuned cellular process aimed at providing the cell with an appropriate amount of proteins and RNAs to fulfill all of its metabolic functions. A key bacterial feature for faster recognition of the start codon on mRNA is the binding between the anti-Shine-Dalgarno (aSD) sequence on prokaryotic ribosomes at the 3’ end of the small subunit (SSU) 16S rRNA and Shine-Dalgarno (SD) sequence, a purine-rich sequence located upstream of the start codon in the mRNA. This binding helps to facilitate positioning of initiation codon at the ribosomal P site. This pairing, as well as factors such as the location of aSD binding relative to the start codon and the sequence of the aSD motif can heavily influence translation efficiency. The objective of this thesis is to understand the SD-aSD interactions and how changes in aSD sequences can affect SD sequences in addition to the underlying impact these changes have on the translational efficiency of prokaryotes. In chapter two, we hypothesized that differences in the prevalence of SD motifs between B. subtilis and E. coli arise as a result of changes in the free 3' end of 16S rRNA which may have led B. subtilis and E. coli to evolve differently. E. coli is expected to be more amenable to the acquisition of SD motifs that do not perfectly correspond with its free 3’ 16S rRNA end than B. subtilis. Further, we proposed that the evolutionary divergence of these upstream sequences may be exacerbated in B. subtilis by the absence of a functional S1 protein. Based on the differences between E. coli and B. subtilis, we were able to identify SD motifs that can only perfectly base pair in one of the two species and are expected to work well in one species, but not the other. Furthermore, we determine the frequency and proportion of these specific SD motifs that are expected to be preferentially present in one of the two species. Our motif detection is in keeping with the expectation that the predicted five categories of SD that are associated with B. subtilis and are expected to be less efficient in E. coli exhibit greater usage in the former than latter. Similarly, the predicted category of SD motifs associated with the E. coli 16S rRNA 3’ end is used more frequently in E. coli.Across prokaryote genomes, translation initiation efficiency varies due to codon usage differences whereas among genes, translation initiation varies because different genes vary in SD strength and location. In chapter 3 we hypothesized that there is differential translation initiation between 16 archaeal and 26 bacterial genomes. Translation initiation was found to be more efficient in Gram-positive than in Gram-negative bacteria and also more efficient in Euryarchaeota than in Crenarchaeota. We assessed the efficiency of translation initiation by measuring: i) the SD sequence’s strength and position and ii) the stability of the secondary structure flanking the start codon, which both affect accessibility of the start codon

Kuscer, Lana. "Charlotte Bray's "Here Everything Shines": Interview, Analysis and Performance Guide." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2020. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc1703393/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines a recent work for flute and piano, Here Everything Shines, by a living composer, Charlotte Bray, including a study, analysis and performance guide. The composition was largely inspired by the late Cape Verdean singer Cesária Évora and her song Petit Pays. My research explores the influence of Évora's song on Here Everything Shines, including the melodic development, tonal center, style and freedom of her singing and the impact the song has on a performer's interpretation of Here Everything Shines. The study examines the text of the song, the emotions evoked and reflects on the compositional elements in Here Everything Shines. Originally written for flute and guitar and commissioned by Tom Kerstens for International Guitar Foundation, Here Everything Shines was published in 2015. Bray transcribed it for violin and piano at request of Darragh Morgan and Mary Dullea and subsequently for flute and piano at my request. This dissertation compares the three versions for flute and guitar, violin and piano, and flute and piano and examines the variations between flute and violin as well as guitar and piano parts. The performance guide includes the composer's input on both interpretation and implementation of her ideas throughout the work.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: The aim was to clarify the meaning of shinrin yoku by identifying the concept’s antecedants, defining attributes and consequences in order to possibly expand the district nurse’s health enhancing competence and treatment options. Background: Swedish healthcare is facing a number of considerable challenges and improvement requirements and investments are made to prevent illnesses and enlarge the primary care. In the future the distict nurse will probably work with second nature related ill health in a larger extent. More science illuminates the positive and health enhancing effects of nature and evidence shows that nature works relaxing and promotes recover after stress but also of the immune system. Paradigm changes is making room for nature in health care. Science has shown that the concept and nature therapy of shinrin yoku gives plenty of health enhancing effect but shinrin yoku’s definition is unclear and changes meaning depending on context which is confusing. Method: Walker and Avant’s concept analysis in eight steps. Findings: Shinrin yoku is defined by its attributes forest visit, slow walk, activating the senses, mindfulness, phytoncides and no achievement. Its antecedents are a forest-style environment, serenity, switched-off technology and guide. Consequences: shinrin yoku brings health enhancing effects in six different areas: heart and blood vessels, psyche and mood, the endocrine system, the immune system, the brain and the autonomic nervous system and inflammation. Conclusion: Shinrin yoku can be considerable from a public health perspective though it can be seen as a stress relieving factor as well as a health enhancing resource. The therapy can be used as prevention, complement or separate treatment depending on the needs. It is a holistic way of feeling better that makes the most of nature without harming it.

Abstract:
Real estate companies are capital intense and bank loans represent the most common source of funding. However, the years following the latest financial crisis resulted in difficult terms and expensive bank loans, which cleared a path for alternative sources of funding. Small and me-dium-sized real estate companies displayed a particular interest in corporate bonds and ever since then the real estate sector have been overrepresented on the Swedish corporate bond mar-ket. Despite the growth during the past years, the Swedish market still appears to be underde-veloped compared to other countries. However, several trends are now indicating that High Yield is on the rise. New regulations that are currently being implemented will increase the costs for banks further and consequently make bank loans even more expensive. Simultane-ously, the current low interest-rate environment and volatile stock markets are increasing de-mand for High Yield alternatives among retail and institutional investors. This study investi-gates the High Yield market for small and medium-sized real estate companies and is built upon eleven interviews with professionals. It concludes that the market is underdeveloped because there has been no previous demand for it. Swedish banks and companies have traditionally had a synergetic relationship while investors relied on saving accounts and equities. The situation today is different; investors are demanding High Yield investments and the segment will most probably increase in the future. Real estate companies are positive to bonds and wish to increase the current ratio of their debt portfolio. There are however several barriers for continued growth, such as lack of knowledge, transparency, liquidity as well as fair pricing in the market. In the current state, corporate bond investments are suitable only for professional investors. The ex-emption is High Net Worth Individuals, who buy and hold, which are particularly suited for smaller corporate bonds.

Abstract:
are under pressure from habitat loss, environmental stress and pathogens including viruses. Research have shown viral infections to be one of the major causes of colony losses. The purpose of this study was to screen three viruses; Deformed wing virus, Slow bee paralysis virus and Acute bee paralysis virus but also three parasites; Nosema spp., Crithidia spp., and Gregarine spp. due to their mortality and the lack of knowledge regarding some of the pathogens’ habitat and hosts. During the years of 2015 and 2016 three bee species were collected in a number of 156 samples including honeybees, bumblebees and solitary bees equally divided. Extraction of RNA and DNA was done using only the abdomen which was homogenised by the use of MixerMill and later extracted on a QIAcube. Real-time qPCR was used in this study as a qualitative screening method. DWV was detected primarily in honeybees, infecting as much as 70 %. The parasite known to have bumblebees as its host, namely Crithidia spp. was detected in 23 % of the honeybees collected, 15 % of the bumblebees and 2 % of the solitary bees. According to the results; Crithidia spp. is no longer a specific parasite found in bumblebees but have broaden its host spectrum to both honeybees and solitary bees. Furthermore, the parasite detected in most samples was Gregarine spp. and was detected in 50 % out of the bees collected suggesting that this parasite is common in Swedish bees.

The studies to aimed the interface metal/molecule resulted in the discovery of the SERS effect. The SERS effect was discovered accidentally and can increase the intensity of scattering adsorbed species ca. 106 times. The SERS performance depends on several parameters such as: size, shape and nature of the metallic nanostructures. To avoid aggregation and deposition of nanoparticles, a new methodology is proposed in this dissertation: coat the NPs with inert materials like SiO2 and MnO2. The cited methodology receives the name of SHINERS. Another technique that has been receiving great notoriety due to applications in biological systems is the SEF effect. A specific spacing between the fluorophore and NP is necessary for the SEF effect to occur and it can be accomplished by coating with inert oxides, which takes the denomination of SHINEF. The distance from the surface causes a decay of the signal, therefore, the layers are supposed to be ultrathin with precise thickness control for optimized results. In order to obtain a good SHINERS and SHINEF performance, in this dissertation, Ag and AuNPs coated with ultrafine layers of SiO2 and MnO2 to different thicknesses were prepared. It had been possible to characterize the coating of metal oxide NPs by using TEM. It has been determined covering oxide layer thickness of 2-6 nm. The coating of NPs causes a shift of LSPR bands for higher wavelength of the coating nanoparticles compared to uncoated NPs, assigned to increasing changes in the local refractive index of the NPs with the oxide layer thickness. The resulting nanomaterials performances for SHINERS and SEF effect were studied using IR-820 dye, which had its vibrational spectrum assigned. There has been observed a decrease in the SHINERS intensity with the increasing thickness of the coating in relation to the SERS intensity attributed to the increasing distance of the adsorbate from the NPs surface. For SHINEF effect, it has been found that a significant enhancement of fluorescence emission occurs when IR- 820 dye in the presence of the coated NPs excited at 785 nm. The preparative methodologies proposed in this dissertation are promising for the application of coated Ag and Au NPs as substrates for high performance SHINERS and SHINEF techniques.

Abstract:
The Blackmouth Shiner (Notropis melanostomus) is a small North American cyprinid that is listed as a Species of Concern due its relatively small range, occurring at only a few sites in Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Due to limited data and the small number of actual samples of N. melanostomus, the true characteristics of viable habitat and distribution remain unknown. The objective of my research was to utilize remote sensing data to gain a better understanding of the habitat characteristics where the N. melanostomus has been collected and use this information to identify other areas were populations are likely to occur during future sampling efforts. In particular, Landsat data were used to map the spatial and temporal extent of water inundation over a 20-year time-series within floodplain water bodies surrounding the Pascagoula River to determine the effects on the presence or absence of Blackmouth Shiners at historic collection sites. These characteristics could be used to inform future site selections within the Pascagoula River drainage as well as identify other river systems that have similar inundation patterns and morphology within and proximal to the known range.

Abstract:
This dissertation reports on an outcome evaluation of The Shine Centre's literacy intervention, Literacy Hour. The Shine Centre is a South African non-governmental organisation that offers literacy support to Grade 2 and 3 learners at risk of reading failure. The programme takes the form of one-to-one or one-to-two tutoring. The learners who are chosen to participate in the Literacy Hour programme are selected based on their results in Shine's diagnostic assessment completed at the end of Grade 1. The selected students work with trained volunteers twice a week for an hour at a time. Each hour of the Literacy Hour programme is divided into four 15-minute components, namely: (a) paired reading, (b) shared reading, (c) have-a-go writing, and (d) wordplay. The evaluation design was a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent group design. The assignment into the experimental/intervention group and the control group was done by means of a sharp regression-discontinuity cut-off. The sample included six Centres and two Chapters in the Western Cape with complete data for the 2011 to 2013 cohort. Learner results were monitored using various assessment tools at the end of Grade 1 and during Grades 2 and 3. The two Shine diagnostic assessments, D1 and D2, tested the learners' literacy skills against the level that they should have acquired by that point in their school career. Additionally, the reading level assessments were used to determine the learners' actual reading level/age.

Abstract:
The recent Progress in International Reading Literacy Study and The Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality reports painted a dire picture of South Africa’s literacy situation: 80% of Grade 4 learners were rendered unable to read for meaning and 27% of Grade 6 learners as functionally illiterate. These results need to be contextualized against the extensive public spending that is incurred on education. Though it appears that learners are in school, they do not seem to be learning, a phenomenon encountered repeatedly in the developing world. The production process of educational outputs is often being hidden in the black box. With a large body of research confirming how reading literacy holds predictive validity for later child development and academic success, Shine Literacy offers an intervention that is set at lower primary school level and is intended as a swift corrective measure for those who struggle to read early on. This dissertation conducted a quasi-experimental impact evaluation by estimating the treatment effect of Shine Literacy via difference-in-differences and propensity score matching. By using the available data which included (1) Shine’s diagnostic test scores, (2) attendance data and (3) Grade 3 Systemic test score data obtained from the Western Cape Department of Education, the estimation procedures arrived at average treatment effects ranging between 0.6 to 1.9 standard deviations. IsiXhosa and “At risk” learners capture the largest test score improvements, and therefore are the main beneficiaries of the programme. This renders Shine Literacy as an extremely valuable input in the production of better literacy and thereby better schooling outcomes. It helps those at the bottom end of the distribution. Furthermore, positive impact on Systemic Mathematics test scores was found as well, confirming the predictive power of literacy on numeracy repeatedly discussed in the literature.

Abstract:
Shin Buddhism in Japan supports human rights today because it was forced to come to terms with its own discrimination against burakumin—a Japanese minority that has experienced severe caste-like disadvantage and exclusion based on heredity, occupation, and place of birth. The majority of burakumin follow Shin Buddhism, in which they have been treated as outcastes, just as they have been within other Buddhist schools and within Japanese society as a whole. Over the course of the twentieth century, buraku advocacy groups pressured the Shin sects to respond to specific doctrinal and structural incidents of discrimination, both contemporary and historical. One of these sects, the Ōtani-ha, developed its institutional policy on this serious social problem precisely by interacting with buraku advocacy groups, both secular and sectarian, and responding to their specific criticisms. The story of this institutional struggle can be effectively told through the story of one of its priest-bureaucrats, Takeuchi Ryō'on (1891-1967). Takeuchi, who flourished in the Ōtani-ha administration from the 1920s to the 1950s, worked to alleviate buraku discrimination and put forward a Shin Buddhist theory of social engagement. Takeuchi's story reveals how a Buddhist bureaucrat and his faction—with time, personnel, and money—worked under pressure to create an ethical social policy based on Shin doctrine. In addition to examining the issue of buraku discrimination, a Shin Buddhist sect, and a member of its "middle management"—topics rarely addressed in English language Buddhist studies—this dissertation performs two important tasks. First, it describes a type of Buddhist ethical thought that is self-consciously historical and concerned with the religious organization, the "order" (kyōdan), as a whole in its actual and ideal aspects. My examination of this type of ethical thought provides a rare but important complement to scriptural, philosophical, and individualistic accounts of Buddhist ethics. Second, it challenges current scholarly models of Buddhist social engagement, or "socially engaged Buddhism," which tend to neglect the early twentieth century and large, established Buddhist groups. I find social engagement in pre-1945, large, conservative organizations, and not just in post-1960, small-scale, progressive groups. This is because social engagement is a Buddhist response to modernity itself and not tied to a particular modern political ideology.

Abstract:
According to Philippe Lejeune’s “autobiographical pact,” a text can only be considered an autobiography when the author, narrator, and character all share the same proper name. Any exceptions are thusly designated as works of fiction, regardless of whatever biographical resemblance may be detected between the author and character. This thesis aims not to challenge this useful generic distinction, but to develop an authoritative system for approaching the oft-neglected side of the equation: works of autobiographical fiction, and autobiographical dramas in particular. I propose to develop a reception-based methodology (the Biographical Grid) for assessing author-character resemblance with as much empiricism as possible. This is done by extracting the author’s biographical material in relation to the chosen fictional character (often the play’s protagonist) via their characterization within the text, and organizing this material within a specially-designed table. Each of these units is then assigned a numerical score based upon its correspondence with the author’s publicly-known biographical data. The result is not only a qualitative value assigned to the degree of resemblance between the character and its author, but moreover indicates precisely which character traits enforce the autobiographical kinship, and which represent conscious deviations from the biographical record as part of the process of fictionalization. This information can then be applied to well-informed analyses of the text’s use of its autobiographically-inspired content. Using Tolstoy’s play, The Light Shines in Darkness, as a case study, I demonstrate the process of building, testing, and applying the grid to assess a work of autobiographical drama. My systematic approach to autobiographical dramas of this kind supports the development of further research into methods of biographical criticism while strengthening analytical readings of individual plays.

Abstract:

Industrialized and developed urban centers surround the aquatic ecosystem of San Francisco Bay, and are historic and current sources of anthropogenic contaminants to which resident wildlife is exposed and impacted. An indigenous fish species, the shiner perch (Cymatogaster aggregata), was demonstrated to exhibit significant reductions in plasma tetraiodothyronine (T4) concentrations when sampled from highly industrial Oakland Inner Harbor (OAK) as compared with less impacted locations like Redwood City (RED). This study combined histomorphological evaluation of thyroid follicular tissues and characterization of plasma thyroid hormones, T4 and triiodothyronine (T3). Fish from OAK, but not RED, exhibited reduced plasma T4, T3, and total thyroid hormones, changes that were significantly correlated with thyroid glandular changes including reduced follicular colloid sizes. The findings indicate environmental disruption of thyroid hormone biosynthesis and possible thyroid gland compensatory responses (to low thyroid hormone levels) given the reduced colloid volumes.

Abstract:
Chloroplasts are the green organelles of plants with a evolutionary prokaryotic background. During evolution chloroplasts established translation initiation as the major step in regulation of gene expression. A vast number of factors, e.g. sequence elements, secondary structures or RNA binding proteins, influences the regulation of translation initiation. A conserved sequence – Shine-Dalgarno sequence – can be identified both in prokaryotes as well as chloroplasts. In prokaryotes this sequence provides a faithful means for positioning of the ribosome to the start codon. Due to lower conservation of Shine-Dalgarno sequences the role of this sequence in translation initiation is not completely understood. We designed a series of constructs that contain different arrangements of these sequences in the 5’ UTR resulting in an increased number of potential ribosome binding sites or translation initiation sites. Additionally we constructed a series of 5’ UTRs that resembled polycistronic transcripts. The results showed a dramatic effect of the different constructs on the translation efficiency of the reporter protein. It could be shown that numerous translation initiation sites increase translation efficiency, whereas increased numbers of ribosome binding sites do not. Additionally it could be shown, that plastidic ribosomes preferentially initiate on 5’ translations initiation sites in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes that recognize initiation sites equally. This illustrates that plastidic ribosomes in contrast to prokaryotic ribosomes show a scanning like mechanism. Hence plastidic ribosomes gained some eukaryotic properties during evolution. A second project was dealing with hybrid variegation. This phenomenon is based on plastid-nuclear genome incompatibility. Due to biparental plastid inheritance in Pelargonium hybrids may show chimeric phenotypes with bleached (incompatible) and green (compatible) sectors. This points to the plastome as cause for the hybrid variegation. To this end the nucleotide sequence of three plastid genomes was determined and an array of candidate genes causing the incompatibility could be compiled.

Abstract:
T2K is an accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino experiment in Japan. The main goal of the T2K experiment is a search for CP violation in the lepton sector by measuring electron (anti) neutrino appearance in a muon (anti)neutrino beam. Initial (anti) neutrino flux is produced in decays of hadrons which originate from the interactions and the re-interactions of a 30 GeV proton beam with a 90 cm long graphite target. Knowledge of the T2K neutrino flux is limited due to large hadron production uncertainties. A series of hadron production measurements were done to solve this problem, in the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN. Measurements were performed with a proton beam and two target types: a thin graphite target and a replica of the T2K target. Work presented in this thesis concentrates on the T2K replica target data taken in 2010 and the development of the analysis and calibration software. The aim of these measurements is to fully constrain production of π+ , π− , K+ , K− and p coming from the target surface by measuring differential hadron yields in the bins of outgoing particle momentum (p), polar angle (θ) and longitudinal position on the target surface (z). This will allow reduction of the T2K neutrino flux uncertainties from around 10% to below 5%. Predictions of Fluka2011.2c.5 Monte Carlo, NuBeam and QGSP_BERT physics lists from Geant4.10.03 have been compared to the data and it has been found that Fluka2011.c2.5 gives the best prediction

Harden, Shari M. "Fat Content of American Kestrels(Falco sparverius) and Sharp-Shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus) Estimated by Total Body Electrical Conductivity." DigitalCommons@USU, 1993. http://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/966.

Full text
Abstract:
Total body electrical conductivity (TOBEC) is a noninvasive method for the estimation of lean mass in live subjects. Lipid content can be calculated from the body mass measured and the lean mass estimated from TOBEC. I used live American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) to study the accuracy of this method. TOBEC measurements were compared to actual body content determined by Soxhlet fat extraction using petroleum ether as the solvent. TOBEC estimated 73.7% of the variation in lean mass in a sample of 21 kestrels. The use of restraining devices (Vetrap and cardboard cylinders) altered the TOBEC measurement but only by an average of 1.92% and 0.83%, respectively. TOBEC estimated 83.8% of the variation in lean mass for 21 kestrel carcasses warmed to 39.8oC. No significant difference was found between the slope or elevation of the calibration lines developed using live or dead kestrels. A significant difference was found between measurements taken at two different positions. Body temperature altered the TOBEC measurements by an average of 1.54% (SE = 0.55) for each 10C change over a temperature range of 7.00C (37.3-44.4). The calibration line developed for kestrels was used to estimate lean mass and compute fat mass of migrating kestrels, Sharp-shinned Hawks (Accipiter striatus) and Merlins (Fa/co co/umbarius). The average percent fat mass of kestrels trapped during migration at Cape May, New Jersey, was 6.01 % (SE = 1.92, n = 1 2) for males and 8.51 % (SE = 2.00, n = 13) for females. The difference in lean mass between male and female, and between early, mid-season, and late migrating Sharp-shinned Hawks differed significantly during migration. The fat mass of Sharp-shinned Hawks averaged 5.55% (SE = 0.94, n = 53) for males and 10.92% (SE = 0.80, n = 87) for females. Male Merlins had an average fat mass of 18.05% (SE = 3.35, n = 7) and females averaged 14.19% (SE = 3.15, n = 8).

Abstract:
Born in India, Mikkyo︡ (Esoteric Buddhism) represents a branch of the tantric tradition within the so called "late Maha︡yana Buddhism". During 7th century, Buddhism gains considerably influences among rulers to which it offers its support. Doing so, it increases its power. The 7th and 9th centuries are deeply marked by close links between Buddhism and political power. The history of Mikkyo︡, from India to Japan through T'ang dynasty in China is thus contiguous of that of power. At the beginning of the 9th century, the monk Ku︡kai introduces in Japan the Shingon tradition of Mikkyo︡ which it organizes in a rigorous corpus. As in India and China, Mikkyo︡ establishes itself among aristocracy and finds favour with a court fascinated by the splendor of its ritual and their reputation of effectiveness. Ku︡kai is one of the most renowned intellectuals of the Japanese history. One allots to him the introduction to Japan of the syllabic which forms the base of the Japanese writing. He has left an imposing sum of poems and writings. In China, he is still nowadays recognized as a great calligrapher, the "Master with the Five Brushes". He created the first university of Japan which is also the first university in the world. He supervised the construction of a dam in 821, discovered a great thermal springs. Expert in Chinese pharmacopeia, Ku︡kai modernizes the Japanese medicine by associating technologies of Mikkyo︡ with it. The thought of Ku︡kai will have a deep effect on the doctrines and practices of other religious traditions, including non Buddhists one, far beyond his lifetime. Ku︡kai achievement retrospectively appears to be unique in the history of Japan. As a "Great Majordomo of Dha︡rma", he attempts to establish the superiority of Mikkyo︡ on other Buddhist schools, without never disputing orthodoxy or causing its hostility. Within a subtle system of integration, he proposes to reveal "The Secret Mandala". He undertakes to "restore" the emperor by giving life to the ideal of King of Buddhist Law, thus continuing the ideal of his predecessors, the monks Do︡kyo︡ and Gembo︡. After him, no religious leader will show interest for a redefinition of the emperor's role. Finality, such a trajectory is challenging. It puts forward a national ambition, an entire political project turned towards the organization of the State, from its institutions towards the construction of a modernity placing in its center a sovereign of virtue to the image of Bodhisattva, the Buddhist Saint. Ku︡kai can be depicted in such diversity, between religion and policy that we could easily omit the specificities of another contribution being located on a different plan, an interval where politics and religious meet. In this respect it appears to us relevant wondering whether Ku︡kai, as the first Japanese political scientist, would not have in the end contributed to maintain living the dream of national unit, at all times founded in Japan on the ideal of a political and religious unit, finding its balance with an absolute king, monarch of the absolute

Abstract:
This thesis examines the gender roles in the workplace featured in the selected Japanese bestseller films produced in the last three decades, which saw the introduction of policies aimed at improving gender equality in the workplace. The study argues that despite societal and political changes in Japan in the last thirty years bestseller films have perpetuated traditional portrayal of gender roles. The explanation could be that it is much easier to change rules and legislations, than the perception on gender roles, which have existed in the society for a long time.

Abstract:
I studied effects of UV-B radiation on egg and larval golden shiner (Notemigonus crysoleucas) in Castle Lake, California, USA. To compare egg hatching and survival of larval golden shiner, I exposed eggs and larval fish to three different UV-B treatments, low UV-B (4% UV-B), high UV-B (92% UV-B), and ambient (100% UV-B). The egg experiment was conducted in lake and pond water, whereas proto- and mesolarval stage experiments were conducted in lake water only. High and ambient UV-B radiation affected the hatching rate of golden shiner eggs. The mean hatching rate was 13% lower in high UV-B, and 9% lower in ambient UV-B compared to the low UV-B treatments. The hatching rate, however, was not significantly different between lake and pond treatments. The survival of egg to hatched larval stage was reduced under high and ambient UV- 8 radiation compared to low UV-8 treatment in the lake water experiment. In the pond water experiment, however, the survival of newly hatched larvae was not different among UV-8 treatments. During the experimental periods, no survival difference among treatments was observed for larval stages of golden shiners. Mean amount of UV-8 radiation penetrating an oligo-mesotrophic lake differed from that in an adjoining pond during the summer of 1997. UV-8 radiation in pond water was highly absorbed compared to absorbency in lake water. High concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in pond water were likely responsible for the difference in absorbency of UV-8 radiation.
