Abstract:
An Asian pear variety trial consisting of 13 cultivars replicated 12 times was planted in 1989 near Columbia, S.C. For 6 years, cultivars were evaluated for commercial fruit production. The Chinese types `Ya Li' and `Shin Li' bloomed earliest (early March), whereas Japanese types such as `Twentieth Century' and `Choju' bloomed 10 to 12 days later. The largest trees were `Ya Li', `Shinsei', and `Shin Li', and the smallest were `Shinko', `Shinsui', and `Twentieth Century'. All cultivars on P. betulaefolia rootstock had suckers, with `Chojuro' and `Shinko' trees having the fewest. `Kosui' and `Shinsui' defoliated first each fall. Average fruit yields in kg/tree were largest for `Ya Li', `Shinsui', `Shin Li', and `Twentieth Century'. Fruit size was large (>200 g) for the Chinese types such as `Ya Li', `Shin Li', and `Daisu Li', but small (<100 g) and non-commercial for `Twentieth Century'. Fruit maturity dates were consistent year to year, with `Choju' and `Shinsui' ripening first (early July) and the Chinese types ripening last (mid-August). Low return bloom (i.e., alternate bearing) was observed after a heavy crop year. Winter injury, as evidenced by bark cracking on the southwest side of the trunk, was severe in 1993–1994. However, `Ya Li' suffered no cold damage. Fireblight was first observed in the 1992, and increased in 1993 and 1994. `Choju', `Shinseiki', and `Kosui' were the most-susceptible cultivars, while `Ya Li', `Shinsui', and `Shinko' were the most tolerant.

Abstract:
An Asian pcar variety trial planted in 1989 near Columbia, South Carolina was evaluated for growth, productivity, and disease resistance for 4 years. A total of 13 cultivars were observed. The Chinese types Ya Li and Shin Li reached full bloom in mid-March 2 weeks before the Japanese types. The latest blooming cultivars were Choju and Twentieth Century. Shinsei, Shin Li, and Ya Li were the most vigorous cultivars, whereas Niitaka, Shinko, and Shinsui were the least vigorous. Most cultivars produced suckers on the Betulaefolia rootstock; however, few suckers were observed for Chojuro, Shinseiki, Shinko, and Ya Li. Fruit production began in the third year, and after the fourth year Shinseiki, Twentieth Century, Choju, Shinko, and Kosui were the most productive cultivars (8.1-18.2 kg/tree). Chinese types were not precocious but did produce the largest fruit (203-270 g). Choju ripened the earliest (early July), and the Chinese types ripened the latest (late August). Fireblight had infected few trees after 4 years and still was not a problem at this location.

Abstract:
`Shinko' and `Shinsui' Asian pears were kept in air, 2 kPa O2, 2 kPa O2 + 2.5 kPa CO2, and 2 kPa O2 + 5 kPa CO2 (balance N2 in each treatment) at 0 °C or 5 °C for up to 24 weeks. The three CA treatments reduced respiration (O2 consumption) and ethylene production rates relative to air control pears; these rates were higher at 5 °C than at 0 °C and higher for `Shinsui' than for `Shinko' pears. While `Shinsui' pears had a climacteric pattern of respiration and ethylene production rates, `Shinko' pears produced very small quantities of ethylene and exhibited a non-climacteric respiratory pattern. `Shinko' pears had a much longer postharvest life than `Shinsui' pears (24 weeks vs. 12 weeks at 0 °C). CA treatments had a greater effect on delaying deterioration of `Shinsui' than `Shinko' pears, which were more sensitive to CO2 injury and associated accumulation of fermentative metabolites (acetaldehyde, ethanol, ethyl acetate). `Shinko' pears did not benefit from CA storage and were best kept in air at 0 °C. An atmosphere of 2 kPa O2 with or without up to 5 kPa CO2 delayed flesh breakdown of `Shinsui' pears during storage 0 °C.

Abstract:
Morphological and physiological changes during maturation and ripening of eight Asian pear cultivars grown in the southeastern United States were evaluated. Fruit size increased throughout maturation. Flesh firmness decreased as fruit matured and averaged ≈30 to 35 N at harvest maturity. The average TSS in mature fruit ranged from 10% to 13%, with `Shinko' having the lowest and `Shinsui' having the highest. TSS increased during 4 weeks of storage at 1C, but the increase was greater in immature fruit than in mature fruit. Respiration rate declined as fruit matured. Ethylene production was low in `Hosui', `Kosui', `Nijisseiki', `Shinseiki', `Chojuro', and `Shinko' fruit. Mature `Ichiban' and `Shinsui' fruit produced high amounts of ethylene. `Kosui', `Shinsui', `Chojuro', and `Ichiban' fruit showed a climacteric rise in respiration and ethylene production at 20C, while `Hosui', `Nijisseiki', `Shinseiki', and `Shinko' behaved as nonclimacteric fruit. Ethylene production by 1C-stored `Kosui', `Shinsui', `Chojuro', and `Ichiban' fruit was increased on removal to 20C. Glucose and fructose were low during early maturation but sharply increased ≈80 to 85 days after full bloom (DAFB). Sucrose was low in immature fruit but accumulated rapidly late in maturation ≈100 to 107 DAFB. In mature `Hosui', `Kosui', `Nijisseiki', `Shinsui', `Shinko', and `Ichiban' fruit, fructose was the predominant sugar, while in `Shinseiki' and `Chojuro' fruit, sucrose was the predominant sugar.

Abstract:
In a recent study, Shinder and Taube (Shinder ME, Taube JS. J Neurophysiol 121: 4–37, 2019) concluded that head direction cells in the anterior thalamus of rats are tuned to one-dimensional (1D, yaw-only) motion, in contrast to recent findings in bats, mice, and rats. Here we reinterpret the author’s experimental results using model comparison and demonstrate that, contrary to their conclusions, experimental data actually supports the dual-axis rule (lson JJ, Jeffery KJ. J Neurophysiol 119: 192–208, 2018) and tilted azimuth model (Laurens J, Angelaki DE. Neuron 97: 275–289, 2018), where head direction cells use gravity to integrate 3D rotation signals about all cardinal axes of the head. We further show that the Shinder and Taube study is inconclusive regarding the presence of vertical orientation tuning; i.e., whether head direction cells encode 3D orientation in the horizontal and vertical planes conjunctively. Using model simulations, we demonstrate that, even if 3D tuning existed, the experimental protocol and data analyses used by Shinder and Taube would not have revealed it. We conclude that the actual experimental data of Shinder and Taube are compatible with the 3D properties of head direction cells discovered by other groups, yet incorrect conclusions were reached because of incomplete and qualitative analyses. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We conducted a model-based analysis previously published data where rat head direction cells were recorded during three-dimensional motion (Shinder ME, Taube JS. J Neurophysiol 121: 4–37, 2019). We found that these data corroborate previous models (“dual-axis rule,” Page HJI, Wilson JJ, Jeffery KJ. J Neurophysiol 119: 192–208, 2018; and “tilted azimuth model,” Laurens J, Angelaki DE. Neuron 97: 275–289, 2018) where head direction cells integrate rotations along all three head axes to encode head orientation in a gravity-anchored reference frame.

Abstract:
AbstractThere are over 6,000 Buryat Mongols (Buryats hereafter) in Hülün Buir League of Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region, China. Most of the Shinehen Buryats came originally from among the Aga Buryats in Russia after 1918. Although the history of Shinehen Buryats is relatively short, their experiences, as this paper aims to show, are special in many ways. Not much is written about them. The aim of this paper is simple, briefly to introduce the Shinehen Buryats by examining their migrations and the last eighty years of their historical experience in different political power contexts. I discuss their hardships, the continuity of their traditions, the decline and re-emergence of their religious practices, and their current relation to the Buryats in Russia.

Abstract:
Our study investigated how multi-centenary family firms in the area of Kyoto – collectively known as shinise – maintain a high social status in the community. Our analysis unpacks the socio-cultural practices through which the ongoing interaction among these actors re-enacts and reproduces the social order that ascribes shinise a distinct social standing in exchange for their continued commitment to practices and structures that help the community preserve its cultural integrity and collective identity. By doing so, our findings trace a connection between status maintenance and the expressive function that a category of firms performs within a community. At the same time, our study reveals a dark side of high status, by showing how their commitments lock shinise in a position of ‘benign entrapment’ that may impose sacrifices on family members and severe limitations to their personal freedom.
