Abstract:
In the Islamic tradition, as in other religious traditions, female saints are relatively few and not much scholarly attention has been given to them. Fatimah, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, is one such example. It is, however, a point of interest in her case is that in the twentieth century she has captured the attention of writers of Muslim religious literature to such an extent that there now exist at least eleven fairly recent biographies of her in Urdu, English, Arabic and Persian. This is remarkable, given that the earliest sources of Islamic history contain only a minimal amount of information on her. These modern biographies present Fatimah in a manner which interweaves historical information with hagiographic accounts, thus reinforcing her status as a saint.
This thesis attempts to identify, from the earliest available sources, the details concerning Fatimah as a historical person but ultimately shows that there is little real evidence for her life and even what facts do exist are the subject of controversy. Following this it examines the growth of the hagiographical tradition which created out of her a true Muslim saint and discusses its significance particularly for the Shi'ah. Finally, the conclusion presents some of the possible reasons for Fatimah's exalted status and for the resurgence of interest in her in the context of the modern Islamic world.

Écrivain souvent décrit comme avant-gardiste et impénétrable, mais aussi comme l'un des derniers maîtres du shishôsetsu (roman personnel), Shimao Toshio (1917-1986) occupe une place singulière dans la littérature japonaise d'après-guerre. Son œuvre a traversé le XXe siècle dans un étrange état d'isolement, hautement estimée par ses pairs, mais restant méconnue et mal comprise. L'auteur tire un statut presque mythique de la particularité de son expérience de guerre (commandant d'un escadron de tokkôtai mobilisé dans les îles Ryûkyû) et des vicissitudes qui l'ont suivie, comme la maladie mentale de sa femme Miho. Celle-ci a inspiré son roman le plus célèbre, Shi no toge (L'Aiguillon de la mort, 1960-1976). Cette expérience de vie conflictuelle s'est prolongée par un conflit intérieur qui l'a vu épuiser l'ensemble des formes littéraires de la modernité, romantisme, naturalisme, surréalisme, sans jamais se satisfaire réellement d'aucune d'entre elles.Cependant, par-delà cette tendance au conflit, l'un des éléments les plus constants de l'œuvre de Shimao reste son intérêt pour le rêve. Si l'écriture onirique dans la littérature moderne se trouve au carrefour d'une tradition esthétique, de l'exploration de soi et de la contestation du réalisme, elle prend chez lui une dimension tant poétique qu'existentielle. Often described as an avant-garde and impenetrable writer, but also as one of the last masters of the shishōsetsu genre, Shimao Toshio (1917-1986) occupies a special place in Japanese postwar literature. His work went through the 20th century in a strange state of isolation, widely acclaimed by his peers, but still insufficiently known and understood. Shimao acquired a near mythical status from the particularity of his war experience (he was the leader of a squad of kamikaze tokkōtai which was mobilized in the Ryūkyū islands) and its aftermath, like the madness of his wife Miho, which inspired his most famous novel, Shi no toge (The Sting of Death, 1960-1976). Along with these life antagonisms, he also endured an inner conflict which drew him towards most modern literary forms, romantism, naturalism, surrealism, without being really satisfied with either of them in the end.However, beyond this tendency to conflict, one of the most constant elements of Shimao's work is his interest in dreams. While dreamlike writing in modern literature often lies at the junction of aesthetic tradition, exploration of the self and contestation of realism, in Shimao's case, its importance is both poetic and existential. As a « method » of (anti-)novel experimentation, attempt at conflict resolution and research of lost time, the use of dreams provide the tools of the understanding of the author's narrative identity. Through the idea that this dream method can be the « royal road » to understand Shimao, this thesis also aims at making his work an example of the way dreams serve literature as a whole

Both folklorists and literary critics have been drawn to Nathaniel Hawthorne’s body of work because of his distinctive style and incorporation of folk motifs. Such motif-spotting presents no challenge in Hawthorne’s juvenile literature like his retellings from Greek mythology in Wonder Book for Girls and Boys; however, contemporary folklore redirects the focus of this scholarship to “how particular literary uses of folklore fit into a larger, more fundamental concept of what folklore is and how and what folklore communicates” (de Caro & Jordan 2015:15). Hawthorne’s work interacts with other forms of cultural expression in the nineteenth century such as dominant cultural narratives and artwork to transform the classical narratives in Wonder Book for Girls and Boys into narratives that reflect customs in conversational discourse and childrearing practice.

Background Night shift work is inevitable for maintaining continuous services in different sectors e.g. healthcare, financial, transport and service sectors. Night shift work increases exposure of light at night. Exposure of light at night suppresses production of a neurohormone melatonin. Melatonin has shown potential cancer protective action in animal experiments. Melatonin deficiency is suggested to be related to the development of various cancer especially breast cancer. Breast cancer incidence in Hong Kong is rising. Particular concern about association between night shift work and breast cancer is raised. Objective To collect evidence from studies of other countries with study populations of different professions and to evaluate the relationship between night shift work and breast cancer Method MEDLINE was searched to identify publications, limited to English articles, from 1973 to May 2011. Search terms include (circadian rhythm or night work or night shift or shift work or work schedule tolerance) and (cancer or neoplasm or neoplasia) and (risk or rate or incidence). No restriction was set to the publication type. Results Altogether 343 titles retrieved from MEDLINE search. Finally, 8 primary observational studies that met inclusion criteria were identified for this review. Of these, two were prospective cohort studies, one was retrospective cohort study, two were nested case-control studies and three were case-control studies. Most of the study had crude exposure assessment of night shift work, in which four studies relied on group level of exposure probability instead of individual exposure information. Six of eight studies showed positive results on the association of night shift work and breast cancer in women. Three studies found that risk of breast cancer was increased significantly for those who had engaged in night shift work in a long duration i.e. more than 20-30 years, but they were all conducted in populations of same occupational group i.e. nurse and only a moderate increase of breast cancer risk was found. The results were subject to confounding and bias. No consistent results were found for effect of shorter duration of night shift work on risk of breast cancer. Conclusion Based on the studies included, there is suggestive evidence of an association of night shift work and breast cancer. Further studies on this are needed. Involvement of population of different occupational groups, controlling confounder of hormone use and conducting exposure assessment with high reliability using individual information instead of that from group are suggested.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the presentation of consciousness in Virginia Woolf’s novels with a particular focus on shifts in narrative point of view. I argue that the linguistic mechanisms triggering or co-occurring with viewpoint shifts are important means of presenting or linguistically capturing the socially-oriented interactive quality of fictional minds, a significant aspect of consciousness presentation that has not been fully explored in either narratological studies of fiction or literary criticism of Virginia Woolf. Aiming for a systematic examination of the linguistic correlates of viewpoint shifts, I conduct detailed stylistic analysis of two of Woolf’s most representative stream of consciousness novels, Mrs Dalloway and To the Lighthouse, in which shifts in point of view occur frequently and rapidly. I focus on four crucial linguistic indices of viewpoint shifts: discourse parentheticals, attributing parentheticals, connectives and adjacency pairs. Drawing on findings in linguistics and discourse analysis, I explain how these linguistic indices allow the text to accommodate multiple viewpoints and, more importantly, to convey the inter-subjective connections between different consciousnesses. With these linguistic features linking different viewpoints, the very fabric of the text embodies the social nature of fictional minds and puts into question the assumption of the impenetrable consciousness. I supplement the examination of linguistic correlates of viewpoint shifts with an empirical study that explores reader responses to shifts in point of view in narrative texts. The results show that the complexity resulting from this narrative technique is not only recognised by scholars working in the fields of literary criticism or narratological studies but can also be perceived by readers who have received no specific training in literary interpretation. Shifts in point of view can cause difficulty for readers in both general comprehension and viewpoint attribution. I propose that the perceived difficulty may direct attention to the juxtaposition of different narrative viewpoints and thus guide readers towards identifying the connections between different minds. This thesis sets out to be a significant work in both narratological investigation of fictional consciousness and literary studies of Virginia Woolf. From a narratological perspective, it contributes to the study of fictional consciousness by redressing the imbalance between the linguistic investigation of individual consciousness and the linguistic investigation of social minds; meanwhile, it also expands existing theoretical accounts of the linguistic presentation of inter-subjective orientedness of consciousness. From a literary perspective, it brings a fresh insight into Woolf’s presentation of consciousness by providing a detailed linguistic account of her narrative techniques and in-depth probing into the nature of consciousness as reflected in her novels.

Like many other cataclysmic events September 11, a day now popularly believed to have 'changed the world', has become a topic taken up by children's writers. This thesis, titled The Whole World Shook: Ethnic, National and Heroic Identities in Children's Fiction About 9/11, examines how cultural identities are constructed within fictional texts for young people written about the attacks on the Twin Towers. It identifies three significant identity categories encoded in 9/11 books for children: ethnic identities, national identities, and heroic identities. The thesis argues that the identities formed within the selected children's texts are in flux, privileging performances of identities that are contingent on post-9/11 politics. This study is located within the field of children's literature criticism, which supports the understanding that children's books, like all texts, play a role in the production of identities. Children's literature is highly significant both in its pedagogical intent (to instruct and induct children into cultural practices and beliefs) and in its obscurity (in making the complex simple enough for children, and from sometimes intentionally shying away from difficult things). This literary criticism informed the study that the texts, if they were to be written at all, would be complex, varied and most likely as ambiguous and contradictory as the responses to the attacks on New York themselves. The theoretical framework for this thesis draws on a range of critical theories including literary theory, cultural studies, studies of performativity and postmodernism. This critical framework informs the approach by providing ways for: (i) understanding how political and ideological work is performed in children's literature; (ii) interrogating the constructed nature of cultural identities; (iii) developing a nuanced methodology for carrying out a close textual analysis. The textual analysis examines a representative sample of children's texts about 9/11, including picture books, young adult fiction, and a selection of DC Comics. Each chapter focuses on a different though related identity category. Chapter Four examines the performance of ethnic identities and race politics within a sample of picture books and young adult fiction; Chapter Five analyses the construction of collective, national identities in another set of texts; and Chapter Six does analytic work on a third set of texts, demonstrating the strategic performance of particular kinds of heroic identities. I argue that performances of cultural identities constructed in these texts draw on familiar versions of identities as well as contribute to new ones. These textual constructions can be seen as offering some certainties in increasingly uncertain times. The study finds, in its sample of books a co-mingling of xenophobia and tolerance; a binaried competition between good and evil and global harmony and national insularity; and a lauding of both the commonplace hero and the super-human. Being a recent corpus of texts about 9/11, these texts provide information on the kinds of 'selves' that appear to be privileged in the West since 2001. The thesis concludes that the shifting identities evident in texts that are being produced for children about 9/11 offer implicit and explicit accounts of what constitute good citizenship, loyalty to nation and community, and desirable attributes in a Western post-9/11 context. This thesis makes an original contribution to the field of children's literature by providing a focussed and sustained analysis of how texts for children about 9/11 contribute to formations of identity in these complex times of cultural unease and global unrest.

Abstract:
This study examined the translation of adjectival pre-modifiers (i.e. pre-modifying adjectives and pre-modifying participles) from English into Swedish. The selection of this topic and material was inspired by previous research on the increasing frequency of noun phrase pre-modification in English, contrasted with notions of Swedish-specific preferences for translating English pre-modifiers into different structures found in previous research and literature. Swedish tendencies included rendering English pre-modifiers as post-modification and the compounding of pre-modifying adjectives or participles with noun phrase heads to form Swedish compound nouns. The concept of translation shifts as labels for translation methods was used to classify translations of adjectival pre-modifiers, in addition to categorising the translation choices based on word class, rank and position. The study concluded that English adjectival pre-modifiers were overwhelmingly translated with formal correspondence (86%), i.e. as adjectival pre-modifiers. The other translation methods that were applied were used considerably less extensively; unit shifts and class shifts constituted 9% and 4% of all translation choices, respectively; omissions of the sense and meaning of the adjectival pre-modifier were found as the translation method for 1% of English adjectival pre-modifiers.  Unit shifts were found to result in a total of 8 different types of structural equivalents to adjectival pre-modifiers. In order of frequency, these were: prepositional phrase, first element of compound noun, extended attribute, pre-modifying prepositional phrase, verb phrase, first element of compound adverb, last element of compound participle and relative clause. Class shifts resulted in 3 categories of formally non-correspondent structures, namely adverb, noun and genitival attribute. The conclusions that could be drawn from the results were that the tendency for the Swedish translation of adjectival pre-modifiers to result in post-modification and compound nouns was small. A qualitative analysis showed that select examples of translations to formally correspondent equivalents were commonly motivated by considerations of readability to reduce sentence length and complexity. Examples of various category shifts were for the most part found to have been caused by the questionable idiomaticity of formally correspondent translation options.

Abstract:
Many sentinel events in acute care centers can be attributed to miscommunication of patient information at shift change. A growing body of evidence supports the implementation of bedside shift report as the standardized approach to ensure effective communication by staff. The purpose of this study was to identify the barriers that impede nurses from fully participating in bedside shift report in order to create an educational initiative to develop the nursing staff's proficiency in performing bedside report. Lewin's change theory served as the framework for the project. Data for the staff development project were collected using a focus group approach with 18 nurse participants. A classic method of analysis, defined and outlined by Krueger and Casey (2009), was used to identify themes and categorize results. A second evaluator of the data supported thematic findings. Nurses revealed barriers consistent with the literature including frequent interruptions, patient confidentiality, sensitive issues, and inconsistent report content. Barriers identified by this study, but not evident in the reviewed literature, included staff unavailability to answer call lights and having to receive report and transfers during report. An education plan was developed based on perceived barriers and evidence in the literature. Implications for positive social change include interventions to refine the current practice of bedside shift report in order to promote effective and efficient communication at change of shift. Findings can inform nursing units in the hospital and other facilities to achieve patient-centered care and improved outcomes. It is critical that nurses understand the positive impact that consistent, timely, and effective shift reports have on providing safe, quality patient care.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the products and impact of the language contact situation produced in Argentina between Italian immigrants and the local Argentine population from the late 1800s to the present day. This thesis is composed of two main parts: historical research and first-hand research, including a comparison between the linguistic situations in Argentina and Uruguay. Despite the high percentage of people of Italian descent in Argentina, we find a case of language shift and loss. Though in the past Italian immigrants were subject to discrimination, now Italian culture is a sense of pride. Nonetheless, the Italian language is only one marker of culture, and one that is lost in the home environment after a few generations. There have been, and still are, some Argentine efforts toward language maintenance, which could perhaps be improved after a thorough comparative study of Uruguay's Italian education model.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore the nominal style in translation, based on the language pair Swedish-German. The non-fiction source text (a Swedish economic text), which was used as material for this study, was translated by the author into German before the actual analysis was carried out. An important feature of the nominal style is the frequent occurrence of nominalizations. With the assumption that German non-fiction texts are particularlyprone to use the nominal style, whereas Swedish non-fiction texts are more likely to usethe verbal style, a quantitative and qualitative analysis was carried out, with the intention of exploring these tendencies in the two languages. The focus was on the one hand on the question of the frequencies with which nominalizations occur in both texts, and on the other hand, how and to what extent nominalizations may be structurally shifted intranslation. Building on the translation model by Eriksson (1997), a classification was made that grouped different structural changes and made them measurable. The results show that the expected assumption could be confirmed. The proportion of nominalizations in the German target text was higher than in the Swedish source text, but with a much smaller difference than assumed. Carlsson (2004) came to a similar conclusion in her study, in which economic texts from newspapers were compared in a language-contrasting manner

För att patienten ska vara delaktig krävs det att patienten är mer involverad i de dagliga händelserna som till exempel skiftrapportering. Vid varje skiftbyte sker överrapportering från en sjuksköterska till en annan, överrapporteringarna saknar ofta patientmedverkan. En rapporteringsmodell är bedsiderapportering vilket innebär att rapporteringen sker i patientens närvaro. Syfte : Syftet var att beskriva patientens delaktighet i vården vid bedsiderapportering. Metod : En litteraturöversikt. Resultat : Bedsiderapportering fick patienterna att känna sig delaktiga i vården, vilket delvis berodde på att de kände sig som värdefulla deltagare. Patienterna betraktades i första hand som en person. Både patienter och sjuksköterskor ansåg att rapporteringssättet var avgörande för patientens delaktighet i vården. De flesta patienter uppskattade att få vara med i rapporteringen och få viktig information som de ansåg sig ha rätt till. Dock ville inte alla patienter delta, vilket bland annat berodde på att rapporten ansågs vara till för sjuksköterskor. Slutsats : Bedsiderapportering ökade patientens delaktighet i vården enligt både patienten och sjuksköterskan. Dock ville inte alla patienter delta i rapporteringen och graden av delaktighet var beroende av på vilket sätt rapporten gavs.
Background : Participation and person-centered care are key concepts in the care that are being given today. In order for the patient to participate, they must be involved in the daily work such as shift reporting. At each shift, reporting occurs from one nurse to another which often lacks patient involvement. A reporting model is bedside report, which means reporting takes place in the patient's presence. Aim : The aim of this study was to describe patient’s participation in care during bedside report. Method : A literature review. Results : Bedside report made patients feel more involved in their care, partly because they felt valued as a participant in the report. The patients were considered a person in the first hand. Both patients and nurses felt that the reporting method was crucial for the participation. Most patients appreciated being included in the reporting and that they received valuable information that they considered justifiable. However, not all patients wanted to participate, which was due, among other things, to the fact that the report was considered for the nurses. Conclusion : Bedside report increased patient involvement in care, according to both the patient and the nurse. However, not all patients wanted to participate and the reporting method were important for the level of participation.

A travers cette recherche, nous souhaitons identifier et définir le genre duroman utopique de la fin des Qing via la lecture attentive d'une sélection deromans chinois écrits entre 1902 et 1910. A partir de l'analyse de romans telsque Xin Zhongguo weilai ji de Liang Qichao (1902 ), Shizi hou de Chen Tianhua(1905), Xin shitou ji de Wu Jianren (1908) et Xin Zhongguo de Lu Shi'e(1910), nous pensons qu'un tel genre littéraire puisse être considéré à la foiscomme un produit particulier du climat de fragmentation socio-historique quicaractérise la période de la fin des Qing, et comme un prisme utile à sacompréhension. La structure de cette thèse est celle d'un itinéraire critique àtravers l’imaginaire utopique chinois moderne. Cet itinéraire est débuté par latraduction de l’histoire courte Xinnian Meng, écrite par Cai Yuanpei en 1905. With this research it is our intention to identify and define the genre of the lateQing utopian novel from the close reading of a selection of Chinese novelswritten between 1902 and 1910. With the analysis of novels such as LiangQichao's Xin Zhongguo weilai ji (1902), Chen Tianhua's Shizi hou (1905), WuJianren's Xin shitou ji (1908) and Lu Shi'e's Xin Zhongguo (1910), we believethat such a literary genre can be considered both as a peculiar product of theclimate of socio-historical fragmentation that characterises the late Qingperiod, and as a useful lens for its understanding. The structure of this thesis isthat of a critical itinerary within the Chinese modern utopian imaginary. Thisitinerary is introduced by the translation of the short story Xinnian meng,written by Cai Yuanpei in 1905. The body of this research is divided into fivechapters: in the first one, the legitimacy of the generic category of “wutuobangxiaoshuo” as a viable critical tool is put under question; the second chapterconcerns the two unfinished novels by Liang Qichao and Chen Tianhua, whosecondition of “incompleteness” is adopted as metaphor for the understanding ofthe utopian construct; the third chapter concerns the relation between the lateQing utopian novel and its foreign models; while in the last two chapters, thecritical framework developed in previous sections of the thesis is applied to theclose reading of Wu Jianren's Xin shitou ji and Lu Shi'e's Xin Zhongguo, two ofthe most interesting novels written in this period

(in English): The topic of this work is the characteristics of the short stories by Kono Taeko. At first I am presenting the methodology - psychoanalysis. Then, I'm describing her life for better understanding of the use of some typical features. Especially the war and the tuberculosis had influence on her work. Subsequently I present possible interpretation of her stories in term of Shintoism (effort to purify) and Buddhism (achievement of liberation). In interpersonal relations Kono Taeko deals mainly with man- woman relationships and her attitude can be considered feminist. In the most comprehensive chapter concerning masochism I am trying to prove with Freud's theory "The child is being beaten" that her work is masochistic. In the end I am generalizing my findings. This work contains Czech translations of examples of her work and contains 68 pages.

Aesop’s Fables characterized by talking animals are usually simple, terse, and carry morals that teach children virtues and foster their young mind. However, when Aesop’s Fables were first invented, they were not written for children. The fables were rhetorical materials for orators, philosophers and sophists who used them to illustrate their teachings or oration. Some fables in ancient times were coarse and brutal. In England during the Middle Ages, fables became one of the most used materials for anecdotes. Monks compiled manuscripts, studied, appropriated, and preached the fables to illustrate their religious doctrines. During the Renaissance when the classics were rediscovered, scholars found Aesop’s Fables perfect for young children to learn and to practice Latin and Greek. Editions of Aesop’s Fables designed for language learning were specifically used in grammar schools and functioned as language learning materials for a few centuries. Well into the English Enlightenment, there was no longer a need for learning Latin or Greek. People advocated for new ideas, and during this time, the area of children’s development and education was crucial. Aesop’s Fables, owing to their nature, were edited, illustrated and turned into teaching materials for the youth. Though some publications were still stringent and too difficult for children to read, the English Enlightenment laid the foundation for Aesop’s Fables to become the most enduring and used source of children’s literature. Throughout history, Aesop’s Fables have undergone a series of shifts in functional use. Numerous editions and translations were created to meet different ends. Aesop’s Fables are an organic form of literature that continue to change, grow and thrive. Its nature remains the same, its implication however has been significantly enriched and broadened because of translations.

(in English): This Thesis deals with the phenomenon of indirect translation. Since indirect translation is still relatively common in the Czech culture, but at the same time rather understudied, the aim of this Thesis is to describe the phenomenon in more detail and with the help of an actual text analysis to investigate the influence this method has on the final translation. Two texts were chosen for the analysis, both written by the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga, being a characteristic sample of the bibliography of Czech indirect translations of Dutch written works. Compiling this bibliography was one of the tasks of this Thesis. It documents the extent to which indirect translation was used in past and present, and it also shows what kind of texts are most likely to be translated indirectly. Finally, the chosen texts were reduced (using sample method) to fragments that were then analysed in terms of stylistic and semantic shifts. According to the analysis the most common shifts appeared to the stylistic ones, mostly those that result in weakening the original style of the author in favour of the translator's own style. What the semantic shifts concerns, in comparison with the mediating translation they seem to occur twice as often in the mediated translation.

Ce mémoire, “Deictic Shifts and Discursive Strategies in Othello”, est une étude des outils linguistiques et les stratégies utilisées par les différents personnages de la pièce. Il explore la façon dont le texte est construit et les différentes techniques qui le régissent de l'intérieur. Il étudie également l'utilisation de certains outils tels que les déplacements, les références déictiques indexicaux, les actes de langage et la rhétorique, et la façon dont ils permettent aux intervenants d'obtenir des résultats différents en fonction de la situation où ils sont. Ce travail est divisé en trois chapitres: le premier est consacré aux discours publics où je trace les différentes techniques utilisées par les personnages tel que la monopolization de la parole, la défense ou la persuasion de leurs interlocuteurs. Le deuxième chapitre se concentre sur les discours orientés vers une seule personne et montre comment les discours peuvent être utilisés pour avoir un effet sur l’interlocuteur. La première partie de ce chapitre traite de la sémiotique de choc. La deuxième partie est consacrée à la sémiotique de la tromperie et de manipulation. Le dernier chapitre est consacré aux soliloques et met l'accent sur l'écart entre les paroles de Iago et les réponses émotionnelles ainsi que les changements dans la personnalité d'Othello et de l'effet connexe de ces changements sur sa langue.
This thesis, Deictic Shifts and Discursive Strategies in Othello, is a study of the linguistic tools and strategies used by different characters in the play. It explores how the text is built and the different techniques that govern it from within. It also studies the use of certain tools such as deictic shifts, indexical references, speech acts, and rhetoric, and the way they allow the speakers to achieve various results depending on the situation they are in. This thesis is divided into three chapters: the first is dedicated to the public-oriented speeches wherein I trace the different techniques used by the characters to monopolize the conversational floor, defend themselves or convince their addressees. The second chapter focuses on the one-addressee oriented discourses and shows how discourse can be used to have an effect on the addressee. The first part of this chapter deals with the semiotics of shock. The second part is dedicated to the semiotics of deception and manipulation. The last chapter deals with soliloquies and focuses on the discrepancy between Iago’s words and emotional responses as well as the changes in Othello’s personality and the related effect of these changes on his language.

This thesis examines the theme of gender and power relationships in the works of Ding Ling (1904-1986) and Zhang Ailing (1920-1995), focusing particularly on two novels: Ding Ling’s The Sun Shines over the Sanggan River (1948) and Zhang Ailing’s The Rice-Sprout Song (1954). Through this examination, this thesis demonstrates the critiques by these authors of the CCP and its policies which, while ostensibly guaranteeing equality to women, in actuality do nothing more than reinscribe traditional Confucian gender values. This thesis situates these novels historically, and places them into the context of the author’s other writings. The analysis focuses on three main aspects of these two novels: violence, repression of women’s desire, and female sexuality. Through a close reading informed by a feminist approach to gender relationships, this thesis demonstrates the startling similarities in the critiques of Ding Ling and Zhang Ailing, despite the writers’ different political ideologies and situations in regard to the CCP.

Este trabalho propõe-se investigar a perceção das vogais e dos ditongos orais do Português Europeu (PE) por aprendentes de Português Língua Não Materna (PLNM) cuja língua materna é o inglês canadiano. O presente estudo procura identificar as vogais e os ditongos do PE de perceção mais problemática para este grupo de aprendentes. Para tal, realizaram-se dois testes de identificação das vogais e dos ditongos do PE, aplicados a um grupo de 20 participantes adultos, alunos universitários com idades compreendidas entre os 18 e os 22 anos, com um nível inicial de proficiência do PE. Os resultados mostram que as vogais com grau de abertura semifechado [e], [ɐ] e [o] são as que oferecem maiores dificuldades de perceção. Relativamente aos ditongos, os resultados revelam uma clara perceção dos ditongos cuja articulação tem o seu início na zona de articulação central [a] e [ɐ] e dificuldade de perceção quando o ditongo inicia numa zona de articulação posterior semifechada. Para além disso, os dados mostram que os ditongos que iniciam o seu movimento numa zona de articulação anterior próxima do grau médio de abertura são discriminados apesar de não serem previstos no inglês americano (ingA). Verificou-se, também, uma assinalável influência da “alteração canadiana” das vogais nos resultados.
This work aims to investigate the perception of the oral vowels and diphthongs of European Portuguese (EP) by learners of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL), whose native language is Canadian English. The present study seeks to identify the vowels and diphthongs of EP which cause greater problematic perception to this group of learners, and which articulation of vocalic or diphthongal sounds poses the largest obstacles to perception. Thus, two identification tests for vowels and diphthongs of EP were performed by a group of 20 adult participants, university students between the ages of 18 and 22, with a beginner level of proficiency of EP. The results show that the vowels with a close-mid height position [e], [ɐ] and [o] are the ones that cause more perception problems. In relation to the diphthongs, the results show a clear perception of the diphthongs whose articulation begins in the central backness area, [a] e [ɐ], and perception difficulty when the diphthong starts in a close-mid back position. Furthermore, the data show that the diphthongs that start its articulation in the front near the mid position can be discriminated, in spite of not being a part of American English (AmE). It is also noteworthy that the “Canadian vowel shift” had a great influence on the results.

In this thesis the term post-colonialism in the Afrikaans drama is investigated, focussing on the post-sixties. The term post-colonialism is difficult to define. Not only are theories of post-colonialism in a state of continuous flux and shifting emphasis, but as a result of different colonial dominations, separate identities have been constructed in South-Africa; so that defining the terms colonial, post colonial and post-colonial proves to be even more problematic. The purpose of this study is to determine to what extent the Afrikaans drama fits into these discourses. The basic point of departure is the fact that post-colonialism played a considerable role in the development of the Afrikaans drama, at the same time providing a more varied scope. The research covers several aspects of post-colonialism in Afrikaans drama; each dealt with in a separate chapter. A multitude of perspectives are featured within the broader discourse in order to obtain multiple norms and standards in a phase of self-criticism. The focus falls mainly on themes and not on performance aspects. New perspectives on issues such as canon texts, silence, hero-worship, the portrayal of woman, patriarchy, and neo-colonialism are presented (chapter 1). In chapter 2 focus falls on the period before 1960, and notably the question of nationalism (associated with apartheid) and the portrayal of the Afrikaner. The literary canon, forms of violence and the position of the super-Afrikaner are viewed in a new light during the re-writing of post-colonial history and the resulting paradigm shifts after 1960. Renewed emphasis is placed on discourse concerning land (chapter 3). Contrasting concepts regarding race, class, language, gender and religion are reconsidered in order to contribute towards the heterogeneous nature of post-colonialism (chapter 4). The function of theatre is to re-evaluate in the context of a post-1994 democratic system. Texts now focus especially on empowerment, re-discovery and re-ordering of history, reconciliation, inter-cultural contact and a post-apartheid syndrome (chapter 5). Anti-hegemonic resistance in Afrikaans literature since the sixties has confronted writers with the challenge of depicting or creating a larger post-colonial reality through their texts.
