Abstract The Yijing (‘Classic of Changes’) is an important text in Daoist and Confucian traditions in China. It also served as a building block of ancient Japanese culture. The Japanese creation myth described in the Jindai no maki (‘Chapters on the Age of the Gods’) of the Nihon shoki (‘Chronicles of Japan’, 720 CE) was strongly influenced by such Yijing-related concepts as taiji (‘Supreme Ultimate’), yinyang (the two complementary and contradictory forces in the universe), qiankun (first two trigrams representing heaven and earth), sancai (three powers or realms of the universe: heaven, earth, man), wuxing (five phases or agents), and bagua (eight trigrams). The Japanese creation myth was later Confucianised in the Tokugawa period (1603–1868), when Japanese Confucian and Shinto scholars provided the Neo-Confucian metaphysical underpinning for Shinto mythology. Based on a close reading of the Jindai no maki, this study aims to investigate how Yijing-related concepts were used to construct the Japanese creation myth and how Tokugawa Confucian and Shinto scholars further elaborated upon it.

Abstract:
This article responds to Jeffrey Perl’s argument (in “Regarding Change at Ise Jingū,” Common Knowledge, Spring 2008) that, while there is a “paradigm shift” at Ise every twenty years, when the enshrined deity Amaterasu “shifts” from the current site to an adjacent one during the rite of shikinen sengū, the Jingū paradigm itself never changes and never ages. The author confirms Perl’s conclusion by examining the politicized scholarship, written since the 1970s, maintaining that Shinto is a faux religion invented prior to World War II as a means of unifying Japan behind government policies of ultranationalism and international expansion. This article shows, instead, how emperors—who are not political but religious figures in Japan—and the Jingū priesthood have acted together over the past thirteen hundred years to sustain the imperial shrine at Ise and its ancient rites. The so-called Meiji Restoration actually continued an imperial policy of restoring and intensifying the observance of Shinto rituals that were threatened by neglect. Meiji intervened personally in 1889 to ensure the continuity of hikyoku, an unvoiced and secret serenade to Amaterasu, by extending its venue from the imperial palace shrine to performance at Jingū as well. The author’s archival and ethnographic research at Ise and the National Archives shows how the arguments that Shinto is a modern invention are punitive rather than dispassionately historical.

Abstract:
This study examines the mythology of Izanami Goddess and Izanagi God in Japanese Shinto religion and representations of Izanami Goddess and Izanagi God in the film Noragami Aragoto Adachitoka’s creation directed by Kotaro Tamura. This study is important because the story of Izanami Goddess and Izanagi God has never been adopted in modern scientific literature even though it has been listed in several anime in Japan. The research data was collected through documentation on the Kojiki and Nihonsoki books as well as capturing scenes of Noragami Aragoto films. Then analyzed using Christian Metz's language cinematography theory and Rudolf Otto's sacred theory. The results showed that firstly, based on the phenomenological perspective and sacrity from Rudolf Otto, Izanami Goddess and Izanagi God in Japanese Shinto mythology were the ancestors of the Mother and Father of the Gods and divine beings and played an active role in the creation of islands in Japan along with its contents. Secondly, in the Noragami Aragoto film, the perspective of cinematographic language Christian Metz, Izanami Goddess and Izanagi God are represented as mysteries of Father and Mother of Ebisu God (Hiruko) and Yaboku God (Awashima or Aha) with backgrounds that are very different from each other.Key Words: mythology, Shinto, Izanami, Izanagi, cinematographic language, and sacred.

Abstract:
Much of postwar politics in Japanese education has revolved around the tensions between conservative’s retrogressive desire for the imperial past on the one hand and the liberal-left’s progressive agenda on the other. The former demands a return to the teaching of traditional (Confucius) family values, patriotism and Shinto-inspired reverence (awe) towards the universe, while the latter demands teaching for rational, critical minds deemed essential for democratic citizenship. This binary structure of political contestation is increasingly problematized by the emerging political sensibilities around the ecological crisis and eco-feminist critique of human exceptionalism, hype-separation between human and nature and ontological individualism. The chapter demonstrates how the new ecological and decolonial literature demands a fundamental rethinking of the postwar politics of Japanese education, in particular, in relation to the place of Shinto—the Japanese indigenous belief system—in school curriculum. It exposes the limitations of the postwar liberal-left discourse which has reduced Shinto to nothing but the conservatives’ retrogressive desire to ‘return.’ The chapter concludes, drawing on Chen’s (2010) notion of de-cold-war politics, that the Cold War framing of education policy debate must be overcome to unleash the decolonial and ecological potentials of Japanese education towards addressing the pressing sustainable challenges today.

Abstract:
Indonesia and Japan are two countries known for their high regard for culture and tradition, with no exception for those associated with religious rituals. In Japan, the Shinto religion is highly renowned for being the existing and believed ancestor religion. Meanwhile, in Indonesia, Islam is the largest religion that has indirectly influenced the cultures and traditions developed in society. Both Islam and the Shinto have a purification ritual with water as their medium, Padusan and Misogi-Harai, respectively. This study focuses on three things, i.e., the history, time of performance, and ritual procedure, to examine the corresponding meaning of the water as the media in both rituals. The method used to collect data is the literature study, and the data is then analyzed using the qualitative content analysis method. As a result of the three aspects studied, two similar meanings of water to the ritualistic purpose were discovered, i.e., purifying the soul from impurities/sin and returning the spirit to devotion to God.

(Title: Shintoism Reflection InOmamori) Shinto handed down from generation to the next generation. Shintoism have had a strong influence on the lives of Japanese people, from festival activities to objects in their surroundings. Omamori is known as one form of that influence and became a culture part of the harmonization of the Shintoism and Buddhism. As one of the sacred objects which are still trusted by Japanese people, the existence of omamori is so popular even in modern society. Through a literature review, this article aims to describe what parts of the omamori are a reflection of Shintoism. The results obtained show that the reflection can be seen among others in the omamori user's belief in the existence of kamisama (Gods), and evil spirits, also can be seen from the material of the omamori itself.

Purpose: In this explorative, self-reflective article, I attempt to extend the methodological discussion of a “negative” approach to comparative education that I have recently articulated elsewhere. Here, I demonstrate how I attempted to put in practice negative comparative education by drawing on my experience at the Shanghai workshop, Beyond the Western Horizon in Educational Research, organized by Iveta Silova, Jeremy Rappleye, and Yun You at the East China Normal University. Design/Approach/Methods: I conceive my participation in the Shanghai workshop as a disruptive moment wherein my previous forms of knowing and being were challenged. More specifically, I discuss how my attempt to situate the ecofeminist and decolonial literature, the two of the three main bodies of literature introduced through the workshop, within the context of Japanese education triggered me to reconsider the role of Shinto in Japanese education and question my own firm identification with the liberal–left politics within Japan. Findings: I reflect upon how the initial sense of discomfort and the remaining sense of ambivalence took me on a journey of unlearning and relearning about the limits of my knowing, my own political subjectivities, and the place of Shinto cosmologies in Japanese education. Originality/Value: I conclude the discussion with a few provisional thoughts that point us to an approach to comparative education that makes our research “a matter of concern” across multiple linguistically bounded, national and regional scholarly communities.

The Japanese director Ninagawa Yukio, who directed all four of the Roman plays between 2004 and 2014, noted the challenge he faced in making Shakespeare’s Roman settings accessible for native audiences, his typical strategy being Japanisation. Ninagawa’s Brechtian strategy works two ways in offering audiences a helpful perspective on cultural difference while harnessing Shakespeare’s humanism to the anti-rational energies of his theatre that modernity had earlier suppressed. This article explores the mythopoeic aspect of Ninagawa’s project first in the context of comparative religion and then with an analysis of his Antony and Cleopatra (2011), which was innovative in casting a Japanese-Korean actress from the western Kansai region as Cleopatra against an established Tokyo actor. The polytheism that native Shinto has in common with ancient Roman religion is a significant subtext.

This article starts with introducing the definition of animism and techno-animism. Then, it will move to talk about the manifestations of the Shinto-Infused animism in Japanese culture. By adducing examples from the Mozambican literature, indigenous beliefs of the Kelabit and the Penan in Southeast Asia, and how children and adults treat and interact with robots and inanimate in the Western society, we will finally reach the conclusion that 1) on the one hand, there are some common interpretations and manifestations of animism shared by people in different cultures, such as tolerance of boundary-crossing and rendering inanimate objects with life forces; and 2) on the other hand, animism is not antithetical to Western conceptions of human-object relation.

Along with mono no aware, miyabi is an aesthetic sentiment that dominates the Heian period. Miyabi describes the elegant attitude and behavior between man and man, as well as between man and nature. Originating from Shinto, miyabi has subsequently become a significant concept of Japanese aesthetics. Miyabi percolated through Japanese literature over eras and was recorded in the compositions of Y. Kawataba – a writer who dedicated his life and literary career to preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of Japan amidst the invasion of European and American civilization. In Y. Kawabata's works, miyabi was expressed through the passion of being able to care for, cherish and contemplate nature at its utmost richness; of finding in nature the joy and energy that healed the wounds of the soul; of appreciating objects-symbols for traditional culture; of love, generosity and tolerance towards people.

This essay introduces the second of three installments of an “elegiac symposium” in Common Knowledge on figures and concepts devalued in what Thomas Kuhn refers to as “paradigm shifts.” The essay suggests that Kuhn’s idea is provincial, in three specified senses, and then goes on to show how differently Japanese culture regards and manages major change. The author of this introduction, who is also the journal’s editor, begins by evaluating a triptych of 1895 by Toshikata as a response to the seemingly revolutionary changes brought by the Meiji Restoration a generation before. He then goes on to discuss, as exemplary of Japanese attitudes toward change, the Shinto ritual during which the sacred shrines of Ise Jingū are torn down and rebuilt every twenty years. The essay concludes by explaining how the impetus for this ritual is also involved in less-exalted aspects of Japanese culture; for example, in the peculiarities of the market for ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Overall, this essay shows that Japanese ways of regarding concepts such as “old” and “new,” “continuity” and “change,” differ so radically from those presupposed in the West that the latter should be regarded as provincial rather than as universally valid.

This autobiographical, sociological, and musicological essay, written for a symposium on xenophilia, concerns how the love of a foreign culture can lead to a better understanding and renewed love of one’s own. The author, a Japanese musicologist, studied Hindustani music with North Indian masters, both Hindu and Muslim, and concluded that it is the shared concept of a “sound-god” that brings them together on stage in peaceful celebration with audiences from religious communities often at odds. The author’s training in ethnomusicology began in India in 1992, immediately after the violent demolition of the Babri Masjid mosque in Ayodhya by militant Hindus, but even at that time she found no trace of such belligerence in the Hindustani musical world. Years later, while conducting research on the Shinto music rituals of her own culture, she discovered a little-known imperial and aristocratic cult of Myō’onten, a Japanese form of the Hindu goddess of music, Saraswati, who is presently an object of devotion for both Hindu and Muslim musicians in North India. This essay, based on nearly three decades of research in India and Japan, offers some answers to a question raised repeatedly in the Common Knowledge symposium on xenophilia: What is the source of the xenophilic impulse and the power that sustains it?

It is possible to determine the range of basic concepts for any genre of literature by comparing the number of mentions of those terms that the researcher selects based on external considerations (for example, classifying the genre under study as Buddhist and attaching a selected Buddhist dictionary to the texts), or by highlighting within the texts of a given genre those words that for some reason can be considered terms, and comparing the contexts of their use. If we apply both of these approaches to the tradition of Japanese medieval didactic tales set­suwa, we get different, only partially overlapping series. The results of such work may be useful for verifying research assessments of any group of texts as close to one or another tradition outside its genre, or forming its own tradition, and which one; to consider all kinds of influences within the large tradition of Japanese literature and/or religious-philosophical thought, to choose options when translating: whether to consider a word or expression a term, whether to give it the same translation every time. Konjaku monogatari-shū (1120s), from the point of view of terminology, is especially interesting because it com­bines stories from several earlier collections of didactic tales, rearranging them in a new way (and the question, whether the resulting collection can be consid­ered as a new whole, can be answered by studying the basic terms and their dis­tribution in different parts of the collection). The article examines, as examples, a number of concepts from the “general Buddhist” and “Shinto” dictionaries, as well as more isolated Yin-Yang (Onmyōdō) tradition

Abstract:
The study of classical religious and literary texts was the main trend of the Far Eastern traditional culture. Exegesis prompted a specific vision of philosophy, literature, and science. Examining the ties between classical texts and their commentaries is important for the better understanding of the development of the Far Eastern civilizations, including Japanese. Japanese commentaries developed, first, around central religious texts of Buddhism, Shinto, and writings by Confucius, and, second, around literary texts. This article mostly examines comments on poetic monuments of medieval Japan. These comments prompted canonization of the main literary works. Already in the early medieval time (Heian era 9–12 cc.), there appeared first comments on the classical texts of antiquity, for example, the comments to Manyōsyū (Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves, 8 c.), the first poetic anthology of Japan. These comments were an early attempt to restore the image of the Japanese recorded in the eight century in Chinese hieroglyphs. In the tenth century, the classical poetry acquired a new form, being recorded in both hieroglyphs and Japanese syllabary (hiragana). There were several genres of literary criticism in Japan: treatises on literature, commentaries on classical texts, compilations of anthologies (e.g. selection of literary texts for intricately organized collections), and poetic contests. Commentators mostly concentrated on deciphering the meaning of select words and phrases while the overall meaning of the text remained behind-the-scenes. The ordinary compilers and commentators on medieval artistic texts became elevated to the level of poets whereas comments began to form part of the canon. The canon itself appears to have been closely connected with compiling, editing, and commenting on the text.

Anime is one of the media for Japanese society to convey messages. The messages are in the form of cultural values and myths that develop and originate from traditional Japanese culture. Belief in myths continues to grow, even influencing Japanese culture, art and literature. One of the myths that is still believed by Japanese people is the existence of "kami" (gods). Most Japanese people adhere to the Shinto religion and believe in Kami. We are all things that smell sacred in the surrounding natural environment. One of the “kami” that the Japanese people believe in is the Fox God Inari. The Fox God Inari is the god of virtue and fertility. Japanese people also believe in Hare Onna. Hare Onna who has the power to change rainy weather to sunny and is the messenger of God Inari. The existence of this Hare Onna can be seen in the anime Tenki no Ko by Makoto Shinkai. This study aims to reveal how the actors of the story, and the setting represent the Hare Onna by using the analytical descriptive research method and Stuart Hall's representation theory. The results of the study show that the actors of the story and the setting of the story represent the strong desire of the Japanese people to turn bad weather into sunny so that their activities can run smoothly and bring prosperity to the surrounding environment through the presence of Hare Onna.

Anna Evgenievna Gluskina (1904–1994) is known as an outstanding translator of Japanese poetry, teacher and educator, expert on Japanese culture, author of numerous academic articles and monographs. There are many well-known publications devoted to her life, her research and poetic work. However, her activities as a museum Japanologist, as well as her contribution to the formation and description of the Japanese collection of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography RAS (MAE), are still little known and underestimated. Meanwhile, Anna Evgenievna's debut as a professional Japanologist is connected with her work at the MAE; she spent almost 9 years of her life in the museum (1925–1933). During her academic trip to Japan in 1928, she acquired over 700 pieces that characterize various aspects of traditional Japanese culture, for the museum: Shinto cult objects, a variety of theatrical accessories including marionette puppets and kageboshi shadow theatre items, numerous traditional agricultural implements and fishing gear, peasants’ costumes and agricultural instruments as well as about 400 photographs and negatives. All these items were organized into 7 material and 6 photographic collections; the descriptions were made by Anna Evgenievna at a very high professional level and are distinguished by great accuracy; each item is provided with a detailed attribution and ethnic designation supplied with its Japanese character writing and indication of the circumstances of their acquisition. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to understand whether or not the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Model and the Shingo Model promote and are embedded into the three pillars of sustainability, as well as to propose a conceptual model for excellence in business towards sustainability. Methodology/Approach: Following the PRISMA methodology, 102 articles were included in the review. A bibliometric co-citation network was created based on those publications to understand the link between the topics, using the VOSViewer software. This paper presents a literature review on the topics of the EFQM and Shingo Model, Corporate sustainability (CS), and the relationship between the excellence models and CS. Findings: Findings from the literature review indicate that effectively the new version of the EFQM Model and the Shingo Model guide organisations towards achieving sustainable economic, social, and environmental results. Research Limitation/Implication: There are still a restricted number of articles on the Shingo Model and on the relationship between the Shingo Model and CS, as well as, on the latest version of the EFQM Model and therefore on the relationship between this model version and CS, which presents a limitation to this paper. Originality/Value of paper: This paper contributes to filling the literature gap regarding the lack of studies evolving the EFQM 2020 model version and the Shingo Model, as well as its relationship with CS.

Este artigo apresenta os resultados de uma pesquisa exploratória com abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa que teve como finalidade aplicar o método SMED para redução do tempo de setup e analisar as lacunas encontradas no método. Na primeira parte do trabalho, foram aplicados os quatro estágios do SMED, definidos por Shingo (1985) e, na segunda parte, foi realizada a análise das lacunas identificadas na aplicação do método original criado por Shingo. Como resultado, obteve-se redução de 72,6% no tempo de setup do equipamento estudado, elevando o OEE de 82,2% para 87,9%. Além das melhorias no equipamento, foi possível comprovar um aspecto não considerado no método SMED, que já havia sido verificado na literatura e identificar dois novos aspectos não citados na literatura e não considerados no método: padronização das atividades e verificação dos resultados. Por fim, através do estudo, foi realizada a proposição de um novo modelo para redução de tempo de setup considerando tais lacunas.

ABSTRACT Ageing has always been a prominent theme for many authors, who wrote about the physical and cognitive changes that accompany it. Japanese literature, in particular, is rich in examples, especially from the pen of Yasunari Kawabata. In The Sound of the Mountain, Kawabata narrates the old age of Shingo Ogata, who begins the book manifesting only lapses in episodic memory, in a manner compatible with what we would call mild cognitive impairment. After detailed descriptions of other ailments of old age, Shingo comes to realise that a new deficit has appeared: apraxia. Unable to tie his own tie, he realises his own decline to what we could call an initial form of dementia, with this added cognitive deficit impacting his daily life. In short, Kawabata elegantly delineates a disease progression familiar to all neurologists, in a way that leads us to consider with new lenses the neurological challenges of ageing.

The study aims at describing the equivalence and shift occuring in translating noun phrases. Library research was applied to this study. The data were taken from two bilingual picture books entitled Princess Mui Zee written by Firma Sutan, Princess Barruna written by Shinta Handini and their translation into Indonesian by Asih Gandana as the translator. The result of the study shows that the meaning equivalence often occurs in formal correspondence. Then, the study also finds the structure shift existed in 15 NPs of both stories; the class shift occured in 3 NPs of both series; the unit shift happened in 1 NP of both series and the intra-system shift occured in 2 NPs.

For that, a bibliographical research was carried out of 41 articles from the Scopus databases, addressing the constructs Spirituality in the Work environment and the Shingo Model, within an application context associated with sustainability and added to a comparative analysis. Results and discussion: From the analysis of the results, it was possible to understand that the Spirituality at Work element is behind the model of the Toyota Production System. The proposed dimensions to characterize an EAT are based on the Shing Prize Model of Effective Management versus the EAT Model by Ashmos and Duchon (2000) versus Bella et al. (2018). Implications of the research: The article portrays a subject that is a key point for improving productivity and developing an individual's social conscience, so necessary for the sustainability of the planet. This study examines Jūzenji 十禅師, a medieval god worshiped within the Sannō cult at Hie Shrine during the twelfth to sixteenth centuries. The article demonstrates that Tendai thinkers promoted Jūzenji to a supreme ontological status since his liminal and ambivalent character afforded him the unique role of redirecting the sinful desires of the flesh into awakening. Three different figures promoted Jūzenji. First, the Tendai abbot Jien 慈円 (1155–1255) constructed ritual programs that raised Jūzenji to the apogee of the Sannō Shintō pantheon, which combined with engi literature concerning Jien’s sexuality, permitted the re-envisioning of Jūzenji as a libidinal god. Second, the preceptors of Mt. Hiei (kaike 戒家) transformed Jūzenji into an embodiment of the precepts, which enabled Jūzenji to encapsulate morality and thereby render sexual sins null. Third, Tendai Sannō Shintō theologians (kike 記家) interweaved Jūzenji with the doctrine of the threefold truth (santai 三諦), which became the basis of the Taimitsu sexual initiation known as Chigo Kanjō 児灌頂. As such, this article offers an important case study whereby a subsidiary god outshines its own godhead for the purpose of legitimating sexuality.

<p>從日治時期文學探討華語語系與日語語系在臺灣發生的複雜關係,有助於我們解決華語語系討論中的二元對立框架:在地化或重視中國根源。過去史書美與王德威對於華語語系/華夷風(Sinophone/Xenophone)的爭論,聚焦於如何擺置實體中國、與台灣文學之兩者關係,但本文則將近代日本帝國放入互動的角色,複雜化此一歷史情境。有鑑於近代日本知識分子生產出一套強調對象化、科學化中國的再現論述,本文嘗試以「支那認識」的概念,重新省視此一情境下臺灣漢人作家的日本語文學運動。 面對中日戰爭情境,臺灣漢人日語作家視此為突顯臺灣之漢文化特色的機會。在呂赫若(1914-1950)此一個案中,對中國古典傳統的重新認識成為其重要的寫作資源,甚至具有使命感,然而其認識顯然也獲益於來自日本的「支那認識」。呂赫若於《清秋》(1943)完成諸多描繪臺灣漢人家族的文學成果,也因而不能被簡單地理解為在地文化的發揚或是漢文化的保存,而應同時重視「支那認識」等知識中介於其間發揮的作用。</p> <p>&nbsp;</p><p>Exploring the complex relationship between the Sinophone and the Japanophone in Taiwan is helpful in exploring the dichotomous framework used in the discussion of Sinophone Studies : localization or Sinocentrism. In the past, Shih Shu-mei and Wang Der-wei&rsquo;s discussion on the Sinophone/Xenophone studies focused on the relationship between China and Taiwan literature, yet this article sees Empire of Japan as an interactive role to further complicate this historical context. Considering the fact that modern Japanese intellectuals produced a set of discourses that emphasized objectification and scientific representation of China, this article attempts to examine the Japanophone literature movement of Taiwanese Han writers in this context using the concept of &ldquo;SHINA knowledge&rdquo;(支那認識). For example, the re-understanding of Chinese classical traditions was an important writing resource for Lu He-Ruo. In his work Ching Chiou (1943), Lu He-Ruo depicted many Han families in Taiwan. His understanding however was influenced by &ldquo;SHINA knowledge&rdquo;. Therefore this article argues that these literary depictions cannot be simply understood as the promotion of local culture or the preservation of Han culture, but they key to unveil the role that &ldquo;SHINA knowledge&rdquo; played in Taiwan literature.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Companies are continuously looking to improve their production systems using excellence models, with lean thinking, the Shingo model, six sigma and lean six sigma being the most comprehensive and applied. It is expected that the initial focus for the survival of companies is their economic profitability, but when economic needs are met, the next step is to achieve operational excellence. For this, in addition to economic objectives, it is necessary to include social and environmental objectives, i.e., the other two pillars of sustainability. This study aims to propose a conceptual model identifying the tools that can help achieve the desired results in the three pillars of sustainability aligned with operational excellence. The design of the conceptual model was based on a bibliometric analysis of the literature that relates the concepts of lean thinking, six sigma, lean six sigma and the Shingo model. The Web of Science was the platform selected for the collection of data, and the timeframe considered was 2010 to 2021. A total of 125 articles were analyzed using the VosViewer software, through which it was possible to analyze different topics of study related to the literature. The bibliometric analysis allowed for the identification of the temporal distribution of publications, the categorization of topics, different areas of application and the importance of the tools used in different practical cases. This study points out that companies have at their disposal several tools to achieve economic objectives. On the other hand, there is a set of more restricted tools that are used to meet the objectives of the social and environmental pillars. Future research should focus on identifying tools that meet social and environmental goals in order to strengthen these pillars that are essential for operational excellence and for the sustainability of companies.

Lexical cohesion has been a serious issue as it is one of the important features in a text. Every writer must consider kinds of lexical devices in writing a text and so do the translator. The main problem in translating the lexical cohesion devices is the different structure between two languages. One device can be applied in one language but not in other language. This journal analyzed the translation of reiteration as part of lexical cohesion devices appeared in the short stories The Black Cat and The Cask of Amontillado written by American writer, Edgar Allan Poe. The short stories were translated by two Indonesian translators namely Anton Kurnia and Shinta Dewi. This research is conducted to share the practice of translating literature works especially a short story which contains a lot of lexical cohesion devices and to give contribution to the development of translation as part of linguistic studies. In doing the research, qualitative and quantitative method is applied including observation, interviews, or document reviews. In the source text, it was found 120 of lexical cohesion devices in the short story ”The Cask of Amontillado” and 187 lexical cohesion devices in the short story “The Black Cat”. The results obtained from this research were that Anton Kurnia translated 73% of lexical cohesion devices in the source language into the target language. Meanwhile, Shinta Dewi translated 94% of lexical cohesion devices in the source text to the target text.

The focus of this Special Issue is on medieval Japanese religion. Although Kamakura “new” Buddhist schools are usually taken as unquestioned landmarks of the medieval religious landscape, it is necessary to add complexity to this static picture in order to grasp the dynamic and hybrid character of the religious practices and theories that were produced during this historical period. This Special Issue will shed light on the diversity of medieval Japanese religion by adopting a wide range of analytical approaches, encompassing various fields of knowledge such as history, philosophy, materiality, literature, medical studies, and body theories. Its purpose is to expand the interpretative boundaries of medieval Japanese religion beyond Buddhism by emphasizing the importance of mountain asceticism (Shugendō), Yin and Yang (Onmyōdō) rituals, medical and soteriological practices, combinatory paradigms between local gods and Buddhist deities (medieval Shintō), hagiographies, religious cartography, conflations between performative arts and medieval Shintō mythologies, and material culture. This issue will foster scholarly comprehension of medieval Japanese religion as a growing network of heterogeneous religious traditions in permanent dialogue and reciprocal transformation. While there is a moderate amount of works that address some of the aspects described above, there is yet no publication attempting to embrace all these interrelated elements within a single volume. The present issue will attempt to make up for this lack. At the same time, it will provide a crucial contribution to the broad field of premodern Japanese religions, demonstrating the inadequacy of a rigid interpretative approach based on sectarian divisions and doctrinal separation. Our project underlines the hermeneutical importance of developing a polyphonic vision of the multifarious reality that lies at the core of medieval Japanese religion.

The focus of this research is to try to see how then the relationship between self-efficacy interests and self-regulation. Among the objects of this research is to develop interest in learning, self-regulation, self-efficacy in children. The research approach is literature review research using a quantitative approach. In reviewing various problems to answer the problems studied, both through the Google schoolar database, ScienceDirect and Shinta. The conclusion in the study is that interest is part of the cognitive that can be continuously developed so as to form self-efficacy and self-regulation. Abstrak Kajian terhadap psikologi merupakan kajian yang menarik. Lebih khususnya adalah bagaimana menumbuh kembangkan minat, efikasi diri dan regulasi diri. Sebab ketiga aspek ini merupakan kunci dari pembelajaran yang bermutu tinggi. Minat pada seorang anak yang tidak berkembang dengan baik tidak dapat memunculkan efikasi diri dan regulasi diri sehingga hasil pembelajaran tidak optimal. Fokus penelitian ini, mencoba melihat bagaimana kemudian keterkaitan anatara minat efikasi diri dan regulasi diri. Dianatara salah satu objek penelitian ini adalah menumbuh kembangkan minat belajar, regulasi diri, efikasi diri pada anak. Adapun pendekatan penelitian yaitu penelitian literatur review dengan menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Dalam mengkaji berbagai problematika untuk menjawab permasalahan yang dikaji baik melalui database Google schoolar, ScienceDirect dan Shinta. Kesimpulan dalam penelitian adalah bahwa minat merupakan bagian dari kognitif yang bisa terus di kembangkan sehingga mampu membentuk efiksai diri dan regulasi diri.

V sedmdesátých a osmdesátých letech 20. století pak vědecko-fantastická literatura na Taiwanu zaznamenala bouřlivý rozvoj: byla uveřejňována v denících a časopisech, publikována ve vydavatelstvích, byly zakládány vědecko-fantastické časopisy, vyhlašovány první literární soutěže pro autory vědecké fantastiky a udělovány první ceny. Současně vznikaly první kritické práce a objevili se i první významní autoři vědecko-fantastické literatury, například Huang Hai 黄海 či Zhang Xiguo 張系國aj. Dvacet let vývoje taiwanské vědecké fantastiky ukončila na počátku devadesátých let 20. století vlna amerických vědecko-fantastických filmů. Počátky, rozvoj a úpadek vědecko-fantastické literatury na Taiwanu je proto jako ukončený jev možno popsat i analyzovat. Její historie je téměř u konce, a tak můžeme nejen hodnotit její význam, ale zároveň ji i srovnat s vývojem nejvlivnější vědecko-fantastické literatury na světě – americké vědecké fantastiky. Popis vývoje a toto srovnání jsou hlavním záměrem tohoto příspěvku.

Abstract:
This study aimed to analyze and explicate the influence of the advent of Latin script (Roman script) on the progress of Malay-Arabic script culture, language, and religion in the archipelago. The arrival of Islam had a major influence on the language, religion, and culture of the archipelago through a script, known as the Malay Arabic script. In the archipelagic history, the reconstruction of local culture through an Arabic-Malay script has affected the growth and progress of civilization. The use of the Malay-Arabic script around the 13th century in the writing tradition in schools and Islamic boarding schools as a medium made it easier to read the Qur'an, to study Arabic grammar, and to learn various aspects of other scientific fields. After that, the situation changed due to the emergence of the Romance script in the 15th century, which was brought by Europeans to the Malay world or the Archipelago. Based on the type of qualitative research using a historical approach, it showed that there was a contestation of the Arabic-Malay script with the emergence of the Romance script in Indonesia. This could be seen from the following: 1) The position of the Arabic-Malay script, which had been popular in society and was entrenched in formal and normal institutions, had been increasingly lost due to the appearance of the Roman script. 2) It was difficult to find references related to religious, social, cultural, and political sciences written in the Arabic-Malay script. 3) The transition from using the Arabic-Malay script to the Roman script also had a religious mission, namely the eradication of Islamic symbols marked by many generations who did not understand the Arabic-Malay script as a medium to make it easier to read the Qur'an and understand religion. Based on this data, it is demonstrated that the study of Arabic-Malay script in today's society is decreasing, and the longer the majesty of the Arabic-Malay script as the Lingua Franca in archipelago civilization can be forgotten if it is not preserved and implemented in formal and non-formal education in Indonesia.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to describe the attitudes of the characters in Jusuf AN novel Burung-Burung Cahaya through psychological analysis of literature. The method used in this research is descriptive method with literary psychology approach. The technique used to collect data is the literature study technique. After that, the data were analyzed using creation analysis techniques. Based on the results of the analysis and discussion, it shows that in the novel Burung-Burung Cahaya by Jusuf AN, there are several elements of attitude which include three components, namely cognitive, affective, and conative which are actualized with an attitude of compassion, obedience to the rules, attentiveness, and independence. The affective component is an emotional component related to a person's emotional life, such as pleasure, hate, bored, fear, or other feelings about something. The conative component is a behavior component which is a tendency to behave or act on certain objects. These three attitudes are shown by several characters including the characters Aku, Zulaikha, Shinta, and Sulam, because only these four characters can be identified in Jusuf AN's novel Burung-Burung Cahaya, while the other characters cannot be shown thoroughly because at a glance as a complement to the storyline. This made it difficult for researchers to determine the nature and attitudes in the characterization of Jusuf AN novel Burung-Burung Cahaya. Thus, the novel Burung-Burung Cahaya by Jusuf AN is a worthy and good novel to be read by all circles, because the novel contains many positive values and use values in social life.

Purpose When appropriately implemented, excellence models such as the Shingo operational excellence model (SOEM), Baldrige performance excellence model and EFQM business excellence model aid enterprise quests for sustained superior results across varied dimensions. Evidence supporting this statement abounds in the literature and in practice. The models, however, tend to be driven by experience, rather than grounded in theory. The purpose of this paper is to explore theoretical underpinnings for such models, with the SOEM used for illustrative purposes. Design/methodology/approach Management theory, systems theory and excellence modeling are integrated to yield a complex management systems based operational excellence model. Correspondence of this model with the SOEM is explored. Key elements considered include contextual factors external to the enterprise, diverse stakeholders, mediating forces, enterprise culture and representative enterprise processes. Findings Understanding the theoretical underpinnings of excellence models—their elements and the interactions and synergies of these elements—enables more sure adaptation of such models to specific enterprise contexts, and more sure course corrections whenever corrections are needed. Originality/value Many excellence models exist, their usefulness largely validated by anecdotal or empirical evidence. Such validation is important, but falls short of theoretically grounding these models. The approach taken herein serves to unify theory, empirical evidence and anecdotes, thus placing excellence models on more solid ground.

En septiembre de 2020 se cerró en Japón un período de ocho años en los cuales gobernó el primer ministro Shinzo Abe. Uno de sus legados ha sido una política exterior activa y el reposicionamiento de Japón en el mundo. Un primer objetivo de este artículo es analizar lo que la diplomacia japonesa ha denominado el “retorno” de Japón a América Latina y el Caribe. Para ello se creó un índice de visitas gubernamentales que permite comparar por país y por año este aumento de la presencia japonesa. El segundo objetivo es analizar las posibles razones de esta revalorización de la región latinoamericana. Para ello se discuten varias hipótesis preexistentes, entre ellas una política exterior más internacionalista y determinantes económicos. En base a la literatura sobre cómo responden los países a los poderes crecientes, se plantea una tercera hipótesis que sostiene que el retorno se relaciona al aumento de la presencia de China en la región. El artículo sirve un objetivo doble, por un lado resume el debate de la literatura existente sobre las relaciones de Japón con América Latina, un tema olvidado por las Relaciones Internacionales en los últimos años, y por otro, ofrece datos nuevos que permiten observar el retorno de Japón a América Latina. A su vez, este artículo contribuye al debate sobre el rol de China en la región y sobre cómo responden los países al crecimiento de una potencia emergente.

Abstract:
Thirty-five years, the age of TRI, is roughly the length of time I have been involved in our discipline. I completed my Ph.D. in 1974 and entered the profession on the cusp of a generational shift. During my first decade in the academy, a number of new young scholars emerged and began to take the places of an older cohort who were primarily theatre historians and/or drama critics and interpreters. The theory explosion changed the way that both theatre history and dramatic criticism were carried out, and a whole new range of methods and objects of study began to appear in our journals and conferences. Post-structural and postmodernist ideas upset the reigning conventions of scholarship and also influenced creative artists who changed their practice to reflect these new ideas. Feminism transformed our field, as did new research on race, class and sexuality, while competing theories of the subject brought forward psychoanalysis and phenomenology as important tools for performance analysis. Cultural studies and the new historicism challenged positivist historiography and began to change the kind of theatre history (including subjects and documents) scholars researched and wrote about. Political critique was in the ascendency, after a battle to discredit what many of us perceived as a false objectivity in previous scholarship. This became, eventually, the new orthodoxy for many of us, and the senior scholars in our field today (for example Sue-Ellen Case, Elin Diamond, Josette Féral, Erika Fisher-Lichte, Freddie Rokem, Joseph Roach) all participated in making these major changes happen as young scholars – while not necessarily agreeing with each other: the new generation was thoroughly heterodox in its approach to methods and topics.

Abstract: Wayang kulit is a traditional Indonesian art that was listed in UNESCO on November 7, 2003 as an asset of world cultural heritage. In this modern era, art is less able to compete with global culture because the interest of the younger generation is very minimal. The decline in interest is not without reason, it is because there is not much modern media for Wayang kulit to penetrate teenagers now. Lack of young cadres for the preservation of Wayang kulit can allow the culture to fade and disappear if not preserved. The gaming market in Indonesia has become one of the world's largest markets, this can be used for penetration of native Indonesian culture, one of which is Wayang kulit through modern media. In the story of Anoman Obong's Wayang kulit there are important characters, there’s Anoman, Sugriwa, Subali, Rama, Shinta, Laksmana, and Rahwana, some of these characters are not yet recognizable by many people, therefore in the stage of making 3D Game Character Design Anoman Obong's story is a literature study using the ADDIE method that contains data collection, and production procedures for making 7 characters 3D story Anoman Obong’s Wayang kulit. The creation of 3D Character Wayang kulit Anoman is expected to be the first step of the younger generation to like and help preserve the culture of Wayang kulit as technology develops. Di era modern ini kesenian tersebut kurang mampu bersaing dengan kebudayaan global karena minat generasi muda sangat minim, turunnya minat tersebut bukan tanpa alasan, itu karena belum banyaknya media modern untuk Wayang kulit dipenetrasikan lebih lagi kepada remaja sekarang, kurangnya kader generasi muda untuk pelestarian Wayang kulit dapat memungkinkan budaya tersebut luntur dan hilang jika tidak dilestarikan, pasar game di Indonesia menjadi salah satu pasar terbesar di dunia hal ini dapat dimanfaatkan untuk penetrasi kebudayaan asli Indonesia salah satunya Wayang kulit lewat media modern. Dalam cerita wayang kulit Anoman Obong terdapat karakter – karakter penting, mulai dari Anoman, Sugriwa, Subali, Rama, Shinta, Laksmana, dan Rahwana, beberapa karakter tersebut belum dapat dikenali oleh banyak orang, oleh karena itu dalam tahapan pembuatan Desain Karakter Game 3D cerita Anoman Obong ini adalah kajian kepustakaan dengan menggunakan metode ADDIE yang berisi pengumpulan data - data, dan tata cara produksi pembuatan 7 karakter 3D cerita Wayang kulit Anoman Obong. <p>This study examines the effects of translation shifts on the level of readability in translating children’s literature. It conducts this study on three Persian translations of “<em>Alice’s Adventures in the Wonderland</em>” to rank Catford’s shifts based on their effects on the readability of translation. To do that, in this study, the typology of Catford’s shifts will be extended, and the way to measure text readability will be modulated to include the effects of these shifts on the translation readability.</p><p>Thus, Ranking 14 types of shifts, the study reveals that complex shifts (represented as clauses and groups in the texts) are more effective than simple shifts (which are symbolized as single word -nouns and adjective, determiners- in the text) on the readability of translations. This means the complex shifts are more recognizable for children. Of course, verbs, although are mostly the representatives of simple shifts, are very effective on readability of text. Since, they, along with clause and group segments, are will recognizable for them. Therefore children cannot determine the place of single words in the text, but are expert in realizing word clusters in form of clauses and groups.</p>

Abstract:
This article examines the thematic shifts in three contemporary Vietnamese American novels published since 2003: Monique Truong's The Book of Salt, Dao Strom's Grass Roof, Tin Roof, and Bich Minh Nguyen's Short Girls. I argue that by concentrating on the themes of inferiority and invisibility and issues related to ethnic and racial relationships in U.S. culture (instead of concentrating on the Vietnam War and the refugee experiences), some contemporary Vietnamese American authors are attempting to merge their voices into the corpus of ethnic American literature, which usually is thematically characterized by identity, displacement, alienation, and cultural conflict, etc. Each author explores the problems confronted by individuals caught up in various phases of the Vietnamese diaspora of the twentieth century. These important works are treated primarily thematically, even as the theoretical approaches of various critics are employed to examine those themes. All three novels take Vietnamese American literature in new thematic directions, which signals great promise for future developments.
