Abstract:
This chapter discusses the Illinois Territory, which was one of the frontier regions affected by war. Only recently split off from Indiana Territory in 1809, the new territory ran from the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers north to the U.S. border with Canada, embracing the current states of Illinois and Wisconsin, together with a part of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and Minnesota east of the Mississippi River. All those states, especially Illinois, would eventually owe their existence to the War of 1812. Mortality on the Illinois frontier was high, although not necessarily higher than in other frontier communities. The settlers who had located in the river bottoms were often racked by recurrent fevers and malaria, which they called “the ague.” Nevertheless, adversity had made the settlers hardy in spirit and there was no challenge they feared to take on.

Abstract:
This chapter details the start of Octave Chanute's journey toward becoming a civil engineer. Sixteen-year-old Octave read that engineers working for the expanding railroads needed to possess universal knowledge. To become a civil engineer he had much to learn, but he felt sure that intelligent and earnest work would provide his key to success. The remainder of the chapter covers various events in Octave's life including his apprenticeship on the Hudson River Railroad; his marriage to Annie James in 1857; his real estate investments; his move to Peoria, Illinois, in 1854; and his roles in the construction of the Peoria & Oquawka Railroad, Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad, Ohio & Mississippi Railroad; Chicago & Alton Railroad, and the Union Stock Yards in Chicago.

Abstract:
At its height between AD 1050 and 1275, the city of Cahokia was the largest settlement of the Mississippian culture, acting as an important trade center and pilgrimage site. While the influence of Cahokian culture on the development of monumental architecture, maize-based subsistence practices, and economic complexity throughout North America is undisputed, new research in this volume reveals a landscape of influence in the regions that had and may not have had a relationship with Cahokia. Contributors find evidence for Cahokia’s hegemony—its social, cultural, ideological, and economic influence—in artifacts, burial practices, and religious iconography uncovered at far-flung sites across the Eastern Woodlands. Case studies include Kincaid in the Ohio River Valley, Schild in the Illinois River Valley, Shiloh in Tennessee, and Aztalan in Wisconsin. These essays also show how, with Cahokia’s abandonment, the diaspora continued via the Mississippi River and extended the culture’s impact southward.
