Aksi unjuk rasa menuntut penolakan terhadap RUU KUHP dan revisi UU KPK berujung rusuh diikuti oleh elemen mahasiswa berbagai perguruan tinggi di Indonesia. Salah satu tokoh publik yang gencar memberikan narasi sejalan dengan mahasiswa adalah Najwa Shihab. Najwa Shihab melalui unggahan-unggahannya menurut warganet justru memprovokasi aksi mahasiswa. Penelitian ini bertujuan meneliti wacana percakapan warga dalam kolom komentar akun facebook Najwa Shihab untuk menggambarkan penilaian publik terhadap netralitas Najwa Shihab sebagai seorang jurnalis. Pendekatan penelitian menggunakan analisis wacana kritis Model Fairclough. Pendekatan itu memungkinkan penggunaan bahasa dalam wacana ditempatkan sebagai praktik sosial; wacana atau penggunaan bahasa dihasilkan dalam sebuah peristiwa diskursif tertentu; dan wacana yang dihasilkan berbentuk sebuah genre tertentu. Data penelitian berupa wacana komentar warganet dalam kolom komentar akun facebook Najwa Shihab. Teknik analisis data menggunakan model interaktif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan warganet berpersepsi Najwa Shihab memperkeruh suasana. Bagi sebagian publik gerakan mahasiwa tersebut tidak murni dan ada tujuan terselubung. Najwa Shihab membuat narasi yang mengesankan mewakili suara masyarakat Indonesia. Warganet mengingatkan perlu disadari bahwa juga ada masyarakat yang tidak mendukung dan memilih diam. Najwa Shihab dianggap tidak berimbang dalam mengundang narasumber dan kebablasan. Banyaknya warganet yang memojokkan Najwa dianggap sebagai sebuah karma yang tunai. Diharapkan Najwa Shihab dapat melihat kasus sentitif yang terjadi di masyarakat secara lebih bijaksana sehingga tidak terjadi disinformasi.Kata Kunci: Pandangan publik, Najwa Shihab, provokatifDemonstrations demanding rejection of the revision of the Criminal Code Bill and the revision of the KPK Law led to riots followed by elements of students from various universities in Indonesia. One public figure who aggressively provides narratives in line with students is Najwa Shihab. Najwa Shihab through his uploads according to citizens actually provoked student action. This study aims to examine the discourse of citizen conversations in the Najwa Shihab facebook account comment column to illustrate the public's assessment of Najwa Shihab's neutrality as a journalist. The research approach uses the critical discourse analysis of the Fairclough Model. That approach allows the use of language in discourse to be placed as a social practice; discourse or language use is generated in a specific discursive event; and the resulting discourse takes the form of a particular genre. The research data is in the form of discourse on citizen comments in the Najwa Shihab facebook account comment column. Data analysis techniques using an interactive model. The results showed that citizens who perceive Najwa Shihab make the atmosphere worse. For some public, the student movement is impure and has a hidden purpose. Najwa Shihab made an impressive narrative representing the voice of the Indonesian people. Citizens remind to be aware that there are also people who do not support and choose silence. Najwa Shihab is considered to be unbalanced in inviting speakers and too far. The number of citizens who cornered Najwa was considered as karma in cash. It is hoped that Najwa Shihab can see sentitive cases that occur in society more wisely so that disinformation does not occur.Keywords: Public views, Najwa Shihab, provocative

Abstract:
Acara Mata Najwa adalah salah satu program dialog yang membahas masalah-masalah kekinian yang terjadi di Indonesia. Salah satu topik yang dibahas adalah “Hukuman Salah Alamat.” Tujuan penelitin ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan teks yang dikonstruksi oleh Najwa Shihab pada acara “Hukuman Salah Alamat.” Jenis penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian ini diperoleh melalui teknik simak dan catat. Teknis analisis data yang dilakukan mengacu pada teori Analisis Wacana Kritis (AWK) model van Djik. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, pertama, analisis struktur makro dialog interaktif “Hukuman Salah Alamat” secara garis besar membahas tentang kasus Baiq Nuril yang menjadi korban kasus pencemaran nama baik. Kedua, berdasarkan analisis super struktur, dialog tersebut dapat diklasifikasikan menjadi tiga bagian, yaitu pendahuluan, isi, dan penutup. Bagian pendahuluan merupakan narasi yang disampaikan oleh Shihab untuk mengantarkan dialog, bagian isi merupakan fakta-fakta berupa rekaman video dan hasil wawancara Shihab dengan narasumber, bagian penutup merupakan narasi yang disampaikan Shihab dan sangat puitis untuk menyimpulkan hasil dialog dan harapan-harapan terkait dengan UU ITE. Ketiga, pada analisis struktur mikro, ditemukan bahwa terdapat beberapa metafora yang digunakan Shihab. Fungsi metafora ini adalah untuk mempertegas makna yang sengaja dibangun oleh Shihab. Selain itu, juga ditemukan bahwa diksi-diksi Shihab sangat “tajam”. Shihab sangat ekspresif dan sangat tegas dalam menyampaikan pendapat atau mengajukan pertanyaan.

Abstract:
Shihab, in full M. Quraish Shihab (b. 1944) is a prominent exegete who became one of the leading intellectual figures of 20th-century Indonesia. As a scholar, Shihab is best remembered for his 30-chapter exegesis entitled Tafsir Al-Mishbah. In the Commentary, Shihab had applied several rules that had driven him towards exegeting the verses. This kind of rule is also adopted by the other exegetes to ensure their exegeses are in line with the Islamic law. Therefore, this paper seeks to analyse the rules of interpretation applied by Shihab which focuses on the discussions of commandments (al-amr) and prohibitions (al-nahy). To get a proper understanding and to ensure the rules that Shihab had employed can be analysed perfectly, We adopted the document analysis method by making language scriptures and venerated exegeses as the main sources of references. The study found that Shihab had applied six rules related to al-amr and al-nahy in his Tafsir Al-Mishbah, and the rules have been affirmed by grand exegetes.

Abstract:
Artikel ini mendiskusikan gagasan hermeneutik double movement Fazlur Rahman dalam menafsirkan Alquran. Terdapat kalangan yang menyetujui dan menolaknya. Artikel ini menfokuskan pada penelusuran terhadap sikap dan aplikasi M. Quraish Shihab terhadap double movement dengan pendekatan content analisys. Objek material riset ini adalah penafsiran Shihab terhadap ayat hukum yang terdapat dalam Tafsir Al-Mishbah, dimana Rahman juga membahas ayat tersebut. Tulisan ini menemukan bahwa secara prinsip Shihab meresepsi positif terhadap keberadaan hermeneutik double movement, dijadikan pendekatan dalam penafsiran Alquran. Namun, ada rambu yang mesti dipatuhi dalam menggunakannya yaitu dengan tidak menafikan keberadaan redaksi ayat, tidak menghapus aspek hukum yang terkandung dalam Alquran, dan memerhatikan ayat secara holistik. Shihab menolak penggunaan hermeneutik dalam menafsirkan Alquran jika batasan-batasan tersebut diabaikan. Berdasarkan prinsip tersebut, ditemukan variasi sikap Shihab. Dari keempat ayat yang ditelusuri dalam kajian ini; dua ayat ditafsirkann oleh Shihab dengan menggunakan double movement, dan dua lainnya ditafsirkannya tanpa menggunakan double movement.

This study aims to examine the communication patterns of “Shihab Shihab” on Narasi TV with the episode of "Muslim and Christian Brothers". This study uses a type of qualitative research with ethnographic of communication method. To collect data, observation and documentation were conducted. Data analysis was performed using content analysis from Spradley. The results of the study indicate that tiered clarification system or tabayyun is very important to do in our life, particularly in the revolutional industry 4.0. This phenomenon is reflected in the communication patterns carried out by Najwa Shihab, Quraish Shihab, and Priest Budi in Narasi TV. Ethnography of communication well-known as SPEAKING by Hymes in the form of settings, participants, ends, acts, keys, instruments, norms, and genres are the reasons why the communication pattern uses a tiered clarification system.AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji pola komunikasi “Shihab Shihab” pada Narasi TV episode “Muslim dan Nasrani Bersaudara”. Abstract:
This study aims to find the representation of feminist discourse in the Najwa Notes program entitled “Women in the Shihab Family”. The Shihab family is known as a family that has a high level of religious knowledge with the figure of M. Quraish Shihab in it. The negative stigma against women, which is always associated with religious narratives, is an important point to see how women from the Shihab family view freedom. The aspect of freedom in this event is illustrated by the motive for this event, namely as a reflection of Kartini Day, which is known as the inspiration for the rise of women in a patriarchal culture. This study uses a qualitative method with a feminist discourse approach to Sara Mills. This research found that women in the Shihab family uphold the principle of independence without sacrificing their duties in the domestic sphere. For them, women need to have self-confidence, be able to make their own decisions, be empowered to be able to overcome obstacles in themselves to progress, and be of benefit to those around them. This narrative then deliberately provided stimulation for women in Indonesia who became the object of the story of the women of the Shihab family. Readers who are in the wider community are given the doctrine of freedom through joint production efforts between the writer and the reader so that they are indoctrinated to believe in and apply the messages contained in the program.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan representasi wacana feminis dalam acara Catatan Najwa dengan tajuk “Perempuan di Keluarga Shihab”. Keluarga Shihab dikenal sebagai keluarga yang memiliki tingkat pengetahuan agama yang tinggi dengan figur M. Quraish Shihab di dalamnya. Stigma negatif terhadap perempuan yang selalu di relasikan dengan narasi-narasi keagmaan, menjadi point penting untuk melihat bagaimana perempuan dari keluarga Shihab memandang kebebasan. Aspek kebebasan dalam acara ini tergambar dari motif acara ini dibuat, yakni sebagai refleksi hari Kartini, yang dikenal sebagai inspirator kebangkitan perempuan dalam budaya patriarki. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan wacana feminisme Sara Mills. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa perempuan di keluarga Shihab memegang teguh prinsip kemandirian tanpa mengkorbankan tugas-tugas mereka di wilayah domestik. Bagi mereka, perempuan perlu memiliki sifat percaya diri, mampu membuat keputusan sendiri, berdaya untuk bisa mengalahkan hambatan pada dirinya untuk maju dan bermanfaat bagi sekelilingnya. Narasi ini kemudian secara sengaja memberikan stimulis bagi para perempuan di Indonesia yang dijadikan objek dengan subjek penceritaan para perempuan keluarga Shihab. Pembaca yang merupakan masyarakat luas diberikan doktrin kebebasan melalui upaya produksi bersama antara penulis dengan pemabaca, sehingga mereka didoktrinasi untuk meyakini dan mengaplikasikan pesan yang terkandung dalam acara.

This research is titled Tela'ah Thought Alwi Shihab on Religious Tolerance in the Book of Inclusive Islam. This study aims to examine the various thoughts of Alwi Shihab in his book Islam Inclusive. To know the various problems that background the happening of intolerant cadet in religion in the middle of Plurality and religious diversity. To know how Alwi Shihab explains the various solutions and thoughts that he poured in his book Islam Inclusive. In today's reality we often find that the various conflicts between religious communities in various majorities and minorities of Muslims have become viral in the Netizen world about the persecution of the Rohingya Muslim community. In Miyanmar, this is certainly a test of every Religion that echoes religious tolerance. However, by re-examining the thoughts of Alwi Shihab became an important learning for every religious people. In an Inclusive Islam book written by Alwi Shihab, a scholar from the University of Temple of America and a Doctoral Degree at Egypt's Ayn Syam University, has made a significant contribution in establishing a religious tolerance stance, addressing issues and resolving conflicts and relationships between religious communities with views the more Universal. In examining the various thoughts of Alwi Shihab and by conducting literature study the authors found various thoughts of Islamic thought that supports the concept of religious tolerance in the offer Alwi shihab so that Alwi shihab thought this becomes something important contribution, especially in build attitude of religious tolerance. More to build tolerance in a group of religions who have different views to embody and revive the Islamic substance as Rahmatallil Alamin.

<p class="Keywords">Artikel ini akan membahas modalitas sebagai realisasi makna interpersonal pada sebuah talk show. Mata Najwa on stage adalah sebuah talk show yang dipandu oleh Najwa Shihab membahas mengenai berbagai topik dengan tokoh-tokoh masyarakat. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengidentifikasi jenis modalitas yang digunakan oleh Najwa Shihab dan menjelaskan hubungan antara modalitas dengan makna interpersonal pada talk show Mata Najwa on stage “Semua Karena Ahok”. Data penelitian ini diambil dari dialog yang terjadi antara Najwa Shihab dan narasumber (bintang tamu). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa Najwa Shihab menggunakan 25 probabilitas tingkat tinggi, 5 probabilitas tingkat sedang, 1 probabilitas tingkat rendah, 5 obligasi tingkat tinggi dan 1 inklinasi tingkat rendah. Penggunaan modalitas tingkat tinggi serta adanya obligasi menunjukkan bahwa posisi Najwa Shihab tidak sejajar dengan partisipan lain pada talk show tersebut.</p><p>Kata kunci: makna interpersonal, modalitas, obligasi, probabilitas, status</p>

Abstract:
Tujuan penelitian ini dilakukan adalah untuk mengidentifikasikan fungsi implikatur dalam tuturan Najwa Shihab di Acara ‘Gelar Wicara Mata Najwa’ episode “Menangkal Corona dan Menanti Terawan”. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif karena menyajikan penelitian dari data-data berupa fungsi implikatur dari tuturan yang bersifat apa adanya. Data berupa tuturan Najwa Shihab sebanyak 353 data dari video “Menangkal Corona” dan “Menanti Terawan” yang diunduh dari YouTube. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan metode simak dan teknik simak bebas libat cakap (SBLC). Analisis data menggunakan metode padan pragmatis dan teknik pilah unsur penentu (PUP) dengan daya pilah referensial dan teknik hubung banding dan membedakan (HBB). Hasil penelitian disajikan melalui metode formal dan informal melalui penjabaran deskriptif dan menggunakan tabel dan diagram. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat tiga fungsi implikatur yang digunakan dalam tuturan Najwa Shihab Acara ‘Gelar Wicara Mata Najwa’ episode “Menangkal Corona dan Menanti Terawan” yaitu: (1) fungsi asertif/representatif, (2) fungsi direktif, dan (3) fungsi ekspresif. Fungsi implikatur yang paling sering muncul dalam penelitian ini adalah fungsi direktif. Hal ini disebabkan karena tuturan Shihab banyak terdapat implikatur yang berfungsi untuk menanyakan dan meminta kepada mitra tutur dan penonton. Shihab sebagai pembawa acara gelar wicara bertugas untuk menanyakan sesuatu kepada narasumber yang berhubungan dengan topik. Selain itu, permintaan juga diucapkan Shihab kepada penonton ‘Mata Najwa’ agar acara berlangsung lancar dan tetap komunikatif.

Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to examine translation norms, strategies and solutions in chapter XIII Westbottom and Lapland in The Further Adventures of Nils (Lagerlöf, 1911). In the foreword to the English translation of the novel, the translator writes that some of the purely geographical matter has been eliminated in the translation, and that cuts have been made where the descriptive matter is only of local interest. This statement raised questions about the intended readerships and the purposes of the original novel and the translation, respectively. Are these the same in the two texts, or are they different? Further questions were raised regarding the initial norm of the translator. Has she aimed for domestication or foreignization in the text? In this paper, two domains were chosen as fields of study: proper nouns and the lexical fields of water, heights and flat land. Through an analysis of coupled pairs from the chosen domains, it was concluded that the translator’s initial norm was foreignization, but that there are also many examples of domestication in the text. It was also shown that while the original novel has two clearly stated purposes, namely of being a geography book for Swedish school children as well as a novel with high literary standards, the educational purpose is not as pronounced in the translation. However, the inclusion of a Table of Pronunciation displayed an educational addition to the translation, which is not part of the original novel. <p> Shirai Seiichi&rsquo;s education in the context of the interwar events influenced his path and molded him into a defender of idealism. Starting from the early evolution of his ideas, Shirai&rsquo;s significant concepts are outlined to show how they stood apart from and challenged the Japanese modernist debates over the architectural responses to war and industrialization. Examples of Shirai&rsquo;s early work along with surrounding historical events show how Shirai&rsquo;s perceptions of the use of space and its manifestation in architecture, based on Kantian ideas of a priori creation, contradicted orthodox modernist architectural theory and practice. Shirai&rsquo;s evolving theories and their impact on his design are introduced through his early training and related projects. However, it is his unrealized plan for the Genbakud? that is analyzed as primary evidence for the idea that Shirai was the only mid-twentieth century Japanese architect who could effectively express the sad destiny of the nuclear age. Last, specific examples of Shirai&rsquo;s mid to late career work to demonstrate how his conceptual framework evolved. Interviews, commentary, and theoretical analyses of his works show his unique trajectory and role in contrast to his modernist colleagues, and provide insight into Shirai&rsquo;s investigation into the universality and potential of the human spirit (fuhen no anima). Finally, recent discussion about constructing the Genbakud? based on Shirai&rsquo;s blueprints raise the idea that Shirai&rsquo;s early ideals are now ready to be presented in the post-modernist age.</p>

Educated both in Japan and in Europe, Shirai incorporated what he saw as the existential quality of western architecture into his own original designs. His subjective judgement guided the choice of trans-cultural and transhistorical architectural elements, and arranged them in a dialectic manner. This thesis examines Shirai's designs in the terms of their internal conflicts with tradition, such as those of Egypt and Greece, Shintoism and Buddhism, Jo-mon and Yayoi, and stone masonry and wood carpentry. The attitude was quite different from that of so-called modern architects, since Shirai did not deal with systematic spatial integration. Shirai's architecture emerged like an inevitable creation that was destined to exist. As a result, proponents of modernism who think of architecture in the context of the environment and who create space analytically in terms of functions and compositions, failed to appreciate his efforts. Écrivain souvent décrit comme avant-gardiste et impénétrable, mais aussi comme l'un des derniers maîtres du shishôsetsu (roman personnel), Shimao Toshio (1917-1986) occupe une place singulière dans la littérature japonaise d'après-guerre. Son œuvre a traversé le XXe siècle dans un étrange état d'isolement, hautement estimée par ses pairs, mais restant méconnue et mal comprise. L'auteur tire un statut presque mythique de la particularité de son expérience de guerre (commandant d'un escadron de tokkôtai mobilisé dans les îles Ryûkyû) et des vicissitudes qui l'ont suivie, comme la maladie mentale de sa femme Miho. Celle-ci a inspiré son roman le plus célèbre, Shi no toge (L'Aiguillon de la mort, 1960-1976). Cette expérience de vie conflictuelle s'est prolongée par un conflit intérieur qui l'a vu épuiser l'ensemble des formes littéraires de la modernité, romantisme, naturalisme, surréalisme, sans jamais se satisfaire réellement d'aucune d'entre elles.Cependant, par-delà cette tendance au conflit, l'un des éléments les plus constants de l'œuvre de Shimao reste son intérêt pour le rêve. His work went through the 20th century in a strange state of isolation, widely acclaimed by his peers, but still insufficiently known and understood. Shimao acquired a near mythical status from the particularity of his war experience (he was the leader of a squad of kamikaze tokkōtai which was mobilized in the Ryūkyū islands) and its aftermath, like the madness of his wife Miho, which inspired his most famous novel, Shi no toge (The Sting of Death, 1960-1976). Along with these life antagonisms, he also endured an inner conflict which drew him towards most modern literary forms, romantism, naturalism, surrealism, without being really satisfied with either of them in the end.However, beyond this tendency to conflict, one of the most constant elements of Shimao's work is his interest in dreams. While dreamlike writing in modern literature often lies at the junction of aesthetic tradition, exploration of the self and contestation of realism, in Shimao's case, its importance is both poetic and existential. As a « method » of (anti-)novel experimentation, attempt at conflict resolution and research of lost time, the use of dreams provide the tools of the understanding of the author's narrative identity. Through the idea that this dream method can be the « royal road » to understand Shimao, this thesis also aims at making his work an example of the way dreams serve literature as a whole

A produção literária de Naomi Shihab Nye guia o leitor para um estado de contemplação semiótica dos signos construídos pela tradição. A mesma tradição responsável pelas concepções de “Oriente” e “Ocidente”. Os argumentos de Edward Said sobre o Orientalismo também foram usados para analisar a dicotomia “árabe”/ “americano”. O trabalho poético de Nye aponta para uma renovação do ponto de vista do leitor apresentando uma forma diferente de espiritualidade. Permitindo ao leitor acessar o seu repertório de signos culturais em direção à ressignificação. Os comentários de Mary Louise Pratt e Walter Mignolo, a cerca da noção de “transculturação” de Fernando Ortiz, nos impulsionam a ver a relação íntima entre logos, cogito e ethos em direção a corpos e espíritos humanos. A análise de Homi Bhabha sobre o terceiro espaço e a concepção de Pratt das “zonas de contato” coloca a poesia de Nye em posição de constate movimento cultural: nem “árabe”, nem “americano”: humano. Os comentários de Stuart Hall e Walter Mignolo sobre as relações transnacionais na condição da pós-colonialidade do poder mostrou-nos a diferença entre os olhares polarizado e intersticial. Ainda, Luiz Cota Lima e Theodore W. Adorno são os pontos referenciais sobre as teorias a cerca da mímesis da representação real e imaginária. Nossa abordagem entende a concepção de linguagem e estrutura social que foram observadas nos trabalhos de Naomi Shihab Nye como fundamentais na interação humana com a natureza.

Thesis (MscAgric (Viticulture and Oenology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008.<br>The effect of various irrigation strategies on grapevine water relations during the berry ripening period was investigated in a Shiraz/Richter 99 vineyard. Comparisons between different irrigation strategies (full/seasonal, véraison+post véraison, post véraison and no irrigation) were made. During the day, the seasonally irrigated vines experienced less water stress than the deficit treatments. Non-irrigated vines seemed to maintain higher diurnal leaf water potentials. Lower leaf water potentials indicated lower water contents in the vegetative and reproductive tissue. Full irrigation seemed to stimulate primary shoot length. Longer water deficit induced earlier and more complete shoot maturation (reserve accumulation). Re-distribution of leaf area on the shoot may occur when vines are subjected to water deficit. Extended water deficit seemed to induce earlier and restricted water loss from vegetative tissue. The water relations were reflected in the berry size. Irrigation during ripening seemed to induce a continuation of berry water loss. Transpiration losses were apparently much higher in fully irrigated vines whereas stomatal control efficiently maintained water relations in non-irrigated vines. Water deficit seemed to have enhanced the soluble solid accumulation. Irrigation treatments did not seem to affect the titratable acid and pH. The post véraison irrigation in particular seemed to favour a wide window for harvesting. Irrigation at post véraison and especially véraison+post veraison seemed to have a greater effect on the synthesis and extraction of phenolics, anthocyanins and tannins in the berry skins. Different irrigation strategies may affect grapes in such a way that different wine styles are obtained.

Iran is a country rich in vernacular architecture. Despite the losses due to frequent earthquakes and, in this century, to large-scale planning projects, historic towns such as Isfahan, Shiraz, Yazd, Kerman, Bushire, Naiin, still contain thousands of houses. Until recently, however, there has been little attempt to record these buildings, even less to analyse or explain their form. Where studies have been undertaken, they have tended to concentrate on climatic influences on design: the courtyard-house is seen, here and elsewhere, as fundamentally a response to harsh climatic conditions. Yet there is great variation in house- form in Iran, and even the courtyard- house may vary widely between and within regions. The theoretical starting point of this study is that no single factor is sufficient to explain the form taken by the traditional house in Iran. Climatic, technological, social and ideological influences must all be considered. Moreover, it is argued that the relative `weight' of these factors may differ from place to place. To be reliable, a typology must, therefore, be founded on detailed, empirical studies of surviving buildings in specific areas. The study focuses on Shiraz, an important city in south-western Iran, whose traditional architecture remains largely undocumented. Drawing on a recorded sample of 45 houses, a detailed typology is developed, which addresses not only the spatial layout of the house but also its facade treatment, its structure and materials. Documentary evidence, continuity and development over time are inferred by reference to a small number of early examples. All the houses in the sample are built around one or more courtyards, but there is considerable variation, spatially and physically, from one house to another. Spatial types can be distinguished on the basis of the orientation of the courtyards, the definition of spatial axes and the composition of rooms. Attention is given, in particular, to the patterns of entry, and access to and from the courtyards. For certain rooms and spaces (for example talar, ivan and central room) aspect is the prime consideration to ensure either protection from or exposure to the sun. In other cases, proximity, separation and visual protection are critical for reasons of privacy and hospitality. The various spatial characteristics are clarified by use of graph representation, dimensionless plans and axial diagrams. To highlight the characteristics of Shiraz houses, comparison is made with a sample of 40 houses from Yazd, a historic city to the Central Iran, on the edge of the desert. Superficially similar, the Yazdi house is also built around one or more courtyards. However, analysis reveals that in Yazd the orientation of the rooms is much more consistent and rigorous, and the use of basements, semi-open space (talar) and wind-catcher (badghir), more widespread. As in Shiraz, spatial divisions and room sequence articulate the needs of both privacy and hospitality. However, climate is seen to be a far more powerful determinant of house form in this case, resulting in typology that is much more uniform and repetitive. In conclusion the study offers both an analysis an interpretation of traditional housing in Shiraz. The typology points to the most common combinations of spatial and physical features in Shiraz houses but, by extension, other theoretically possible combinations can be suggested, which, with further field work, may be found to have occurred in practice. Methodologically, emphasis has been placed 'key historic buildings as references, and on the need to consider `type' in an holistic sense, embracing material, structure, and facade characteristics. This holistic approach, if applied to other regions, should produce a much richer typology of Iranian housing than exists at present, and one that will illuminate the social and cultural, as well as the climatic determinants, of traditional design.

Shia account for approximately 10–15 per cent of the Muslim population in Pakistan, which has a largely Sunni Muslim population. Anti-Shia violence, led by extremist militant groups, dates to 1979 and has resulted in thousands killed and injured in terrorist attacks over the years. Hazara Shia, who are both an ethnic and a religious minority, make an easy target for extremist groups as they are physically distinctive. The majority live in Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan in central Pakistan, where they have become largely ghettoised into two areas as result of ongoing attacks. Studies on the Hazara Shia persecution have mostly focused on the killings of Hazara men and paid little attention to the nature and impact of religious persecution of Shias on Hazara women. Poor Hazara women in particular face multi-layered marginalisation, due to the intersection of their gender, religious-ethnic affiliation and class, and face limited opportunities in education and jobs, restricted mobility, mental and psychological health issues, and gender-based discrimination.

Abstract:
The Shia Hazaras in Pakistan are one of the most persecuted religious minorities. According to a 2019 report produced by the National Commission for Human Rights, a government formed commission, at least 509 Hazaras have been killed since 2013 (NCHR 2018: 2). According to one of the Vice Chairs of the Human Rights Commission Pakistan, the country's leading human rights watchdog, between 2009 and 2014, nearly 1,000 Hazaras were killed in sectarian violence (Butt 2014). The present population of Shia Hazaras is the result of three historical migrations from Afghanistan (Hashmi 2016: 2). The first phase of migration occurred in 1880 1901 when Abd al Rahman Khan came to power in 1880 in Afghanistan and declared war against the Hazaras as a result of a series of revolts they made against the regime.

Abstract:
The theme of this special collection of papers, the lived experiences of women who belong to religious minorities, has been a blind spot both in international development policy engagement and in much of the international scholarship on women, security and peace. Women who belong to religious minorities, who are socioeconomically excluded and are vulnerable to multiple sources of gender-based violence in Pakistan seem to have fallen through the cracks of the ‘leave no one behind’ agenda. The aim of this volume is to shed light on the day-to-day experiences of women and their families who belong to the Ahmadiyya, Christian, Hindu and Hazara Shia religious minorities in Pakistan. Each of the papers in this collection exposes the complexity of the intersections of gender, class and religious marginality in shaping the realities for women from these religious minorities.
