Abstract:
This paper focuses on terminological issues related to the translation of Darwin’s concept of “natural selection” in Japanese. We analyze the historical fate of the different phrases used as translations, from the first attempts in the late 1870s until recent times. Our first finding is that the first part of the Japanese translations never changed during the period considered: “natural” was constantly rendered by “shizen”. By contrast, the Japanese terms for “selection” have dramatically changed over time. We identify some major breaks in the history of Japanese translations for “natural selection”. From the end of the 1870s to the early 1880s, several translations were suggested in books and periodicals: “shizen kanbatsu”, “shizen tōta”, “tensen”. Katō Hiroyuki adopted “shizen tōta” in 1882 and he undeniably played an important role in spreading this phrase as the standard translation for “natural selection”. The most common Japanese translation of the Origin during the first half of the 20th century (by Oka Asajirō in 1905) also used “shizen tōta”. Adramatic shift occurred after WWII, from “tōta” to “sentaku”. While a linear interpretation could suggest a move from a “bad” translation to a better one, a closer analysis leads to more challenging insights. Especially we stress the role of the kanji restriction policy, which specified which kanji should be taught in schools and thus should be used in textbooks: “tōta” was not included in the list, which may have led to the good fortune of “sentaku” in the 1950–1960s. We think the hypothesis of the influence of Chinese translations is not a plausible one. As to conceptual differences between “shizen tōta” and “sentaku”, they remain unconvincing as both terms could be interpreted as a positive or negative process: there is no clear reason to prefer one term over the other from the strict point of view of their meanings or etymology. Then, turning to the way terms are used, we compare translations of natural selection with translations of artificial or sexual selection. First we turn to the field of thremmatology (breeders): there, “tōta” (sometimes spelled in hiragana instead of kanji) often bore the meaning of culling; since 1917, breeders often used “sentaku” as a translation for “selection”. However, quite surprisingly, breeders used two different terms for selection as a practice (“senbatsu”), and “selection” as in “natural selection” (“shizen sentaku”). Finally, we compare possible translations for “sexual selection” and “matechoice”: here again, there are some good reasons to favour “tōta” over “sentaku” to avoid lexical confusion.

Abstract:
Classical swine fever (CSF) is a disease that is characterized by diffuse hemorrhaging, high fever, and high mortality rates. The pro-inflammatory characteristics of allograft inflammatory factor 1 (AIF1) have been well documented; however, insufficient attention has been given to porcine AIF1. In the present study, AIF1 was identified as a key player contributing to CSFV Shimen infection in porcine alveolar macrophage (PAM) 3D4/21 cell line. Our evaluation showed that AIF1 mRNA and protein are expressed at a time-dependent high level in CSFV Shimen-infected PAM 3D4/21 cells. The transcription and translation of IL6 were also significantly upregulated in infected PAM 3D4/21 cells. By utilizing overexpression RNAs approach, we showed that the cellular AIF1 induced an increased IL6 in PAM 3D4/21 cells. Furthermore, silencing of AIF1 suppressed CSFV Shimen-induced IL6 production in PAM 3D4/21 cells and also inhibited CSFV replication, whereas overexpression of recombinant AIF1 was beneficial for the replication of CSFV Shimen and promoting IL6 production in CSFV Shimen-infected PAM 3D4/21 cells. It is suggested CSFV Shimen induced IL6 in PAM 3D4/21 cells via AIF1 activation, which help clarify the AIF1-related inflammatory processes that occur on CSFV Shimen infected macrophages.

Abstract:
In 1908, the first and second chapters of Kropotkin’s Mutual Aid were first translated into Chinese by Li Shizeng, greatly influencing Chinese anarchists. Li Shizeng followed Kropotkin’s scientific argument of anarchism and strengthened the viewpoint for praising “public” and suppressing “private”. When translating Kropotkin’s thoughts, Li Shizeng focused on political revolution, glossing over the criticism of the capitalist economy, and barely referenced Kropotkin’s original anarchist communist ideology.

Ning, Pengbo, Yulu Zhou, Wulong Liang, and Yanming Zhang. "Different RNA splicing mechanisms contribute to diverse infective outcome of classical swine fever viruses of differing virulence: insights from the deep sequencing data in swine umbilical vein endothelial cells." PeerJ 4 (June 8, 2016): e2113. http://dx.doi.org/10.7717/peerj.2113.

Full text
Abstract:
Molecular mechanisms underlying RNA splicing regulation in response to viral infection are poorly understood. Classical swine fever (CSF), one of the most economically important and highly contagious swine diseases worldwide, is caused by classical swine fever virus (CSFV). Here, we used high-throughput sequencing to obtain the digital gene expression (DGE) profile in swine umbilical vein endothelial cells (SUVEC) to identify different response genes for CSFV by using both Shimen and C strains. The numbers of clean tags obtained from the libraries of the control and both CSFV-infected libraries were 3,473,370, 3,498,355, and 3,327,493 respectively. In the comparison among the control, CSFV-C, and CSFV-Shimen groups, 644, 158, and 677 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were confirmed in the three groups. Pathway enrichment analysis showed that many of these DEGs were enriched in spliceosome, ribosome, proteasome, ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis, cell cycle, focal adhesion, Wnt signalling pathway, etc., where the processes differ between CSFV strains of differing virulence. To further elucidate important mechanisms related to the differential infection by the CSFV Shimen and C strains, we identified four possible profiles to assess the significantly expressed genes only by CSFV Shimen or CSFV C strain. GO analysis showed that infection with CSFV Shimen and C strains disturbed ‘RNA splicing’ of SUVEC, resulting in differential ‘gene expression’ in SUVEC. Mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) was identified as a significant response regulator contributed to impact on SUVEC function for CSFV Shimen. This computational study suggests that CSFV of differing virulence could induce alterations in RNA splicing regulation in the host cell to change cell metabolism, resulting in acute haemorrhage and pathological damage or infectious tolerance.

Abstract:
Taoyuan tableland faces the increasing water demand associated with the expansion of industrialization and urbanization. The county currently relies on the Shihmen Reservoir as the single water supply system. It will be of great concern in the shortage of water resources. This study aims to explore the impact of changes in farm ponds on the regional agricultural environment in Taoyuan County with multiyear (1993, 2003, and 2010) SPOT satellite imagery. Results show that farm ponds have decreased by 10.55 million m2from 1993 to 2010, and the existing farm ponds were 18.80 million m2in 2010, equivalent to the irrigation water of 21.10~31.65 million m3(tons) and 37.61~56.41 million m3(tons), respectively. The existing farm ponds are able to provide the water supply for 1.88~2.82 thousand hectares of agricultural land, accounting for 6.70%~10.50% of total agricultural area of Taoyuan County. Corresponding to the government’s promotion policy (2012) on activating fallow land, if we redeploy the existing farm ponds for activating fallow fields, it will lessen the water supply burden of Shimen Reservoir. Thus, farm ponds remain the significant water facilities. For the sustainable agriculture, farm ponds shall be classified and cherished as a public asset for the future development.

Abstract:
This is a preliminary study about Japanese conception of the world’s language and culture. Prof. Someya Yoshimichi, emeritus professor from Shizuoka Unversity Japan, in an international conferene on Japanese studies held at Universitas Nasional Jakarta on February 2012, has pointed out that the present world’s language and culture can be divided into two categories. One is God’s Language and Culture, and the other is Insect’s Language a Culture. According to him, the God’s Language and Culture is mainly from European and American (Europe), and the Insect’s Laguage and Culture is mainly from Asian especially from Japan and South-east Asia. The writer does not understand why the Japanese takes God and Insect as a pair of contrastive culture. Therefore, the writer collected data from Indonesian indigenous culture, mainly from public beliefs and religions to argue about the Japanese pair of contrastive culture. This writing uses qualitative interpretation method (hermeneutics) and a method of descriptive analysis to understand Indonesian data, and to present the results of interpretation. For previous studies, the writer took the Japanese and Chinese In-yooron to check the realities of Japanese conception, and also took hipernym and hyponym theory from semantics to check the contrastive meaning of the word God and Insect. In short, the writer sees that God and Insect are not an antonym, and also have no contrastive meaning in any sense of semantics and logics.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTThe tailings of the Shimen realgar mine have unique geochemical features. Arsenite oxidation is one of the major biogeochemical processes that occurs in the tailings. However, little is known about the functional and molecular aspects of the microbial community involved in arsenite oxidation. Here, we fully explored the functional and molecular features of the microbial communities from the tailings of the Shimen realgar mine. We collected six samples of tailings from sites A, B, C, D, E, and F. Microcosm assays indicated that all of the six sites contain both chemoautotrophic and heterotrophic arsenite-oxidizing microorganisms; their activities differed considerably from each other. The microbial arsenite-oxidizing activities show a positive correlation with soluble arsenic concentrations. The microbial communities of the six sites contain 40 phyla of bacteria and 2 phyla of archaea that show extremely high diversity. Soluble arsenic, sulfate, pH, and total organic carbon (TOC) are the key environmental factors that shape the microbial communities. We further identified 114 unique arsenite oxidase genes from the samples; all of them code for new or new-type arsenite oxidases. We also isolated 10 novel arsenite oxidizers from the samples, of which 4 are chemoautotrophic and 6 are heterotrophic. These data highlight the unique diversities of the arsenite-oxidizing microorganisms and their oxidase genes from the tailings of the Shimen realgar mine. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report describing the functional and molecular features of microbial communities from the tailings of a realgar mine.IMPORTANCEThis study focused on the functional and molecular characterizations of microbial communities from the tailings of the Shimen realgar mine. We fully explored, for the first time, the arsenite-oxidizing activities and the functional gene diversities of microorganisms from the tailings, as well as the correlation of the microbial activities/diversities with environmental factors. The findings of this study help us to better understand the diversities of the arsenite-oxidizing bacteria and the geochemical cycle of arsenic in the tailings of the Shimen realgar mine and gain insights into the microbial mechanisms by which the secondary minerals of the tailings were formed. This work also offers a set of unique arsenite-oxidizing bacteria for basic research of the molecular regulation of arsenite oxidation in bacterial cells and for the environmentally friendly bioremediation of arsenic-contaminated groundwater.

The relationship of brother and brother is one of the Five Great Relationships in Confucian culture, yet it has been relatively little studied. The lives of the brothers Wang Shizhen and Wang Shimao in the sixteenth century provide a case study of how two male siblings shared a family heritage of education and political engagement, and pursued parallel careers in public life, yet followed distinct paths in both their intellectual interest and political engagements. The nature of their personal relationship also serves to illustrate how the fraternal bond both structured their respective careers and provided emotional support in times of peril and loss.

The dialect belongs to rare Mordovian dialects of the Samara Volga region that were formed in the region since the middle of the XIX century, and therefore its research is of extra interest. Materials and Methods. The research methods are determined by the purpose and objectives of the study. The analysis of the geographical vocabulary of the Shilan dialect is carried out with the involvement of relevant items made in other Mordovian dialects of Samara region, adjacent territories of neighboring regions, as well as other territories of settlement of the Mordovians. Data on geographical vocabulary of the dialect introduced into research for the first time. The main source materials for the article is based on field studies in Silane village during the field seasons in 2017 and 2020, as well as in other Erzya-Mordovian and Moksha-Mordovian villages of Samara region and adjacent territories in 2015 – 2020. Results and Discussion. The study showed that the geographical vocabulary of the Shilan dialect of the Erzya-Mordovian language is significantly different from the corresponding lexical clusters in other dialects of the Mordovian region, which can be explained by natural geographical conditions surrounding Shilan village and the original composition of this lexical cluster of Erzya immigrants who founded this village. Conclusion. The analysis of the geographical vocabulary of the Shilan dialect allowed, on the one hand, to identify specific features of this cluster that distinguish it from the corresponding materials of other Mordovian dialects of the region, and, on the other hand, to identify common isoglosses between it and a number of the Erzya-Mordovian dialects of the Samara Volga region.

Abstract:
An in vitro comparison of the heat exchange properties of the Electromedics D1081A, Sarns MP-4 'Conducer Coil' 165720, Bentley HE-1 00 and the Shiley BCD Plus 4:1 blood cardioplegia sets was performed. The efficiency was calculated for each heat exchanger and post-heat exchange blood path temperatures were compared. The calculated efficiency for each heat exchanger is as follows: Electromedics D1081A at 18 I/minute coil water flow (0.95); Sarns MP-4 165720 at 9 I/minute coil water flow (0.93); Bentley HE-100 at 10 I/minute coil water flow (0.91); Shiley BCD Plus at 15 I/minute coil water flow (0.90). Blood path, precoil temperatures for each unit were compared statistically with no differences found ( p > 0.05). Blood side, postcoil temperatures were then compared. The average postcoil blood path temperature of the Electromedics D1081A was 1.6° ± 0.1 °C, of the Sarns MP-4 165720 it was 2.1 ± 0.1°C, of the Bentley HE-100 it was 2.7° ± 0.3°C, and the Shiley BCD Plus 3.0° ± 0.4°C. The results of this experiment indicate that the average postcoil temperature of the Electromedics D1081 A was lower than the Sarns MP-4 165720 ( p < 0.05) which was lower than that of the Bentley HE-100 ( p < 0.05) and Shiley BCD Plus ( p < 0.05). No statistical difference was found between the average postcoil temperature of the Bentley HE-1 00 and the Shiley BDC Plus.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper investigates four bilingual interjections: na wa, shikena, ehn, and ehen, with the objective of exploring their sources, meanings, frequencies, spelling stability, positions, collocational patterns and discourse-pragmatic functions in Nigerian English. The data which were obtained from the Nigerian component of the Global Web-based English corpus were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, using the theory of pragmatic borrowing. The results indicate that na wa, which is loaned from Nigerian Pidgin, is actually a modified form of a Hausa expression, na wahala, shikena is borrowed from Hausa, while ehn and ehen are loaned from Yoruba. Na wa is an emotive interjection, shikena and ehen are cognitive interjections, while ehn can function both as phatic and as emotive interjections. Both ehn and ehen also function as pragmatic markers. The study thus extends research on the discourse-pragmatic features of Nigerian English.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background Laryngotracheal stenosis is a challenging problem in laryngology which is often misdiagnosed and improperly treated. It is also on the rise due to increase in the number of accidental trauma, prolonged intubations or tracheostomy. Laryngotracheoplasty by Shiann Yann Lee's technique with T-tube stenting is a common accepted surgical procedure these days. Materials and methods Ours is a retrospective study of 14 cases of laryngotracheal stenosis over a period of 20 years from 1993 to 2014, who underwent laryngotracheoplasty with T-tube stenting by a modification of Shiann Yann Lee's technique. Results In our study of 14 patients, the incidence of laryngotracheal stenosis was found to be maximum in the age group of 21 to 30 years with a male preponderance. The commonest etiological factor was prolonged endotracheal intubation or cuffed tracheostomy. The commonest site of the stenosis in our study was cervical trachea. The average time for removal of T-tube was 18 months. All the 14 patients had an uneventful period between insertion and removal of T-tube without any complications. The success rate of our study was hence 100%. Conclusion Laryngotracheoplasty with T-tube stenting by our modification of Shiann Yann Lee's technique is an effective and successful method in the management of laryngotracheal stenosis with a success rate of 100%. Abstract:
Ten mechanical valves (TAD 27 mm): Starr-Edwards Silastic Ball, Björk-Shiley Standard, Björk-Shiley Concave-Convex, Björk-Shiley Monostrut, Hall-Kaster (Medtronic-Hall), OmniCarbon, Bicer Val, Sorin, Saint-Jude Medical and Hemex (Duromedics) are investigated in a comparative in vitro study. The velocity and turbulent shear stress profiles of the valves were determined by Laser Doppler anemometry in two different downstream axes within a model aortic root. Depending on the individual valve design, velocity peaks up to 1.5 m/s and turbulent shear stress peaks up to 150 N/m2 were measured during the systolic phase. These shear stress peaks mainly occurred in areas of flow separation and intense momentum exchange. Directly downstream of the valves (measuring axis 0.55.dAorta) turbulent shear stress peaks occurred at peak systole and during the deceleration phase, while in the second measuring axis (1.5.dAorta) turbulence levels were lower. Shear stress levels were high at the borders of the fluid jets. The results are discussed from a fluid-dynamic point of view.
