Abstract:
In this study I examine the representation of masculinity in the manga, Naruto.  The manga is about the orphan Naruto, who, together with other children goes to a ninja school. Boys and girls study and practice together, at first sight seemingly without emphasized gender differences. As the story continues, the gender differences are, however, quite obvious and to the boys advantage. I find the difference between Naruto and other popular culture ususally presented to pre-bubertal and teenage boys to be considerable. Whereas the domination of women and the message that you can get as far as you wish, are common in American and west produced popular culture as well as in Naruto, the difference lies in how the success is achieved. The men in Naruto reach their goals by allowing their feelings to be seen and expressed. They cry, love, comfort and hate, the feelings give the men strength  The loving is not sexualized, but expressedly aimed at friends, pupils and all of humankind, and the outcome is a wish to protect the loved ones. The hate on the other hand is considered as a one-way road, and Naruto’s power is his ability to make those who have given in to hate to see this. A cultural studies approach allows me to argue för seeing Naruto as part of what is constructing masculinity in Sweden today. The hegemonic masculinity in Naruto is confident, healthy and white. It differs from femininity by expressing it’s goals and by reaching victory in the battles it parttake. It is however also loving, caring, comforting and able to express sadness and loneliness as well as anger.

Abstract:
The research will help to design a shower for Dr. Chelson’s shelter, which can control the water flow, pressure and duration of the shower, which optimizes the utilization of water. The showers could be used in drought-hit areas where water is very scarce, as daily sanitation needs are necessary to keep a person safe and healthy without wasting water. The report from, World Health Organization shows that showers consume the most water. A timed shower could help resolve this issue through eliminating the wastage. Eco-friendly environmentalists may also be attracted to the showers, as their main purposes are to save energy and water. The showers could be set according to the needs of the person. Annually, the difference in costs reflects that these showers are effective and make optimal use of the available water and energy.

Gallacher, Lesley-Anne. "Sleep of reason? : the practices of reading shônen manga." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/4894.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, I explore the practices of English-speaking readers of shônen manga (Japanese comics written primarily for an audience of teenage boys). I concentrate on three series in particular: Hiromu Arakawa’s Fullmetal Alchemist (2001–2010), Tite Kubo’s Bleach (2001–ongoing), and Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto (1999–ongoing). I argue that, although it may appear to be inherently imbued with (authorial) meaning, the shônen manga text emerges from a curious ‘alchemy’ through which the practices of readers transform the ‘raw’ materials provided by manga creators to produce a text that appears to have always been inherently meaningful in itself. I argue that this is always an impossible and monstrous transformation. In the first chapter, I introduce the monstrous combinations of words and pictures, panels and gutters known as shônen manga and argue for the importance of taking the practices of ‘ordinary’ (or, at least, non-scholarly) reading seriously. In the second chapter I explore the idea that reading is an ‘alchemy’ through which the disparate elements readers encounter on the page are transformed into a meaningful text. In the third chapter, I discuss the ways in which time and narrative are braided as readers assemble the disparate elements they encounter on the shônen manga page. In Chapter 4, I explore the visceral thrills of reading shônen manga, which are often expressed through notions of the awesome and the epic. Finally, in Chapter 5, I examine the ways in which a group of shônen manga readers known as ‘shippers’ find love and romance amidst the fighting in shônen manga and demonstrate the legitimacy of these readings by locating them in the material text through the concept of ‘canon’. By attending to reading as an embodied and material practice in this way, the thesis contributes to debates about the relationships between creators, texts and audiences and ongoing attempts to imagine new ways of being critical within cultural and literary studies. Within cultural geography, these kinds of attempts have often been aligned with what might broadly be described as nonrepresentational theories. As such, this thesis attempts to draw out the geographies through which manga texts are realised as manga texts at all.

Abstract:
HALLELUJAH SHOES is a collection of poems, many grounded in the landscape and vernacular of rural and coastal North Florida, and steeped in a sense of place, loss, and the difficulties and mysteries of the human condition. Written mainly in free verse, the collection also contains poems written in traditional and nontraditional forms: abecedarian, haiku, sonnet, noun, and theatrical play. Section one is dominated by the narrator’s relationships with family and culture—their demands, dramas, and allures—and the conflict they create with the narrator’s desire for autonomy. Section two focuses on the narrator as she makes her own way in the world, exercising independence yet still subject to the emotional undertow of childhood experiences. Section three locates the narrator in the present, back in Florida after many years away, with knowledge of the transience of life, but taking joy where she can find it.

Wei, Lin. "Zonation patterns on rocky shores." Thesis, University of York, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.583273.

Full text
Abstract:
Zonation, defined as biological distribution pattern along the vertical dimension, is the most obvious biological phenomenon in the intertidal zone throughout the shore globally. The formation of zonation involves many abiotic and biotic factors and underlying processes. Some early zonation schemes assumed that zonation patterns are merely controlled by tidal level, specifically" critical tidal levels". Later, based on observations of shores in different regions of the world, ecologists increasingly believed that "biological zones" would be more appropriate for describing zonation in the intertidal zone and this approach is accepted by most ecologists currently. But because of a lack of quantitative descriptions and criteria, "biological zones" cannot be assessed or described accurately for a practical guideline to be used in fieldwork around the world. Under the framework of hierarchical theory, different scales of sampling were conducted for revealing the zonation patterns by multivariate analysis techniques, including MDS, DCA and cluster analysis, based on a data set derived from a gentle sloping gravel flat in Daya bay, in South China. The results show that perception and interpretation of zonation is scale- dependent. A sampling grain (size of sample unit) along the vertical level which is greater than 10cm appears adequate to identify zonation on this shore. Based on these results, zones were grouped under different scale schemes with the best groupings being those at the scale which has the largest discrepancy between zones and the smallest discrepancy within zones. The spatial patterns of abiotic and biotic variables were revealed using classic statistical methods (standardized Moristia Index) and spatial analysis techniques (Mantel correlation). Most dominant species were found to be significantly patchy, as were the environmental factors (sediment, shore height, etc.) measured. However, environmental factors displayed significant correlations with community structure, while most of the dominant species were significant related to community structure, except for vertical height which showed a significant correlation with community structure for most sample lags and for all sampling periods. In order to evaluate the relative contribution of different factors and underlying processes to zonation, the Mantel coefficients between community structure and vertical height, biological factors and spatial autocorrelation were subjected to path analysis and partial path analysis models using a variance partitioning approach. Three basic components were found to be significantly correlated with community structure, represented by spatial, vertical height and biological matrices. Variation in community structure determined by vertical height (Z) is equivalent to "critical tidal level", variation in community structure determined by interactions between biological factors and vertical height (ZB) is equivalent to "biological zone". The value of Z and the value of ZB, zonation scheme of "biological zone" is stronger than that of "critical tidal level". The large value of SZ, variation of community structure determined by the interaction between spatial autocorrelation and vertical height, indicated that zonation cannot solely interpreted in terms of "biological zones" and that the underlying mechanisms of zonation need to be explored further.

Abstract:
RECCO is a company that develops rescue system for avalanche accidents. The system works by a RFID tag (reflector) and a detector. The detector senses the reflector that is attached to jackets, helmets, shoes and ski boots up to 200 meters or 30 meters through the snow. The detector is used by experienced avalanche rescue groups. RECCO will implement reflectors in hiking shoes to search for people who are in the woods and in the mountains. The purpose of this master theses is to develop a shoe test machine to be able to test the service life of the reflector. The background study was performed by an information search about the biomechanics of the leg and foot, different leg movements that may affect the shoe, different types of hiking shoes and several shoe test machines available on the market today. The implementation of the project began with a test to examine how large the forces are on the reflector acting in the shoe. The test was conducted by a pressure sensitive sensor connected to an Arduino UNO. The maximum force on the reflector was 7.1 N. This was followed by a brainstorming session that resulting in seven different concepts. The concepts were then evaluated against each other using a PUGH matrix, which resulted in a concept for further development. The analysis was conducted using SolidWorks, Matlab, and ADAMS. Detailed drawings and assembly of the model were made using SolidWorks. The calculations were made on bearing housings, plain bearings, linear ball bearing and the motor using Matlab. ADAMS was used to simulate the movement and to verify the Matlab calculations. The result of the final concept was succeeded. The machine's movement and the influencing forces on the reflector mimic the performed test that was made at the beginning of the project. Improvements that can be done is to change to a more powerful motor to achieve a more constant speed or a flywheel to reduce the strain on the motor. For further work RECCO can program a switch that turns off the motor when the number of cycles are achieved.

Toscano Oliveros, Cristina [Parte I Análisis estratégico y de mercado], Molina Acuña, Hernán [Parte II Análisis organizativo-financiero]

Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 92-99.
The community structures of three shore types namely: "mixed shores" (those where rocky and sandy-shore habitats are intermixed), pure rocky shores and pure sandy beaches in False Bay, South Africa are compared in this study. Four habitats were identified - pure rock (unaffected by sand), mixed rock (rock affected by sand), mixed sand (sand between emergent rocks) and pure sand (beaches with no emergent rock) - representing a gradation from pure rock to pure sandy beaches. The specific aims of this study were to: (1) Sample quantitatively and describe macrofaunal communities on mixed shores in False Bay; (2) make direct comparisons among both the four types of habitats and three types of shores; and (3) test the hypothesis that sand inundation increases diversity at both habitat (a-diversity) and shore (diversity) level. The biological communities of mixed shores are described in terms of species composition, trophic organisation and zonation. Mixed-shore zonation patterns are different from those previously described for pure rocky shores in the region. The ability of Charomytilus meridiana/is and inability of patellid limpets and various algae, to withstand sand inundation are largely responsible for these differences.

Abstract:

Cetin, Necmettin. "Open Pit Truck /shovel Haulage System Simulation." Phd thesis, METU, 2004. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12605499/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is aimed at studying the open pit truck- shovel haulage systems using computer simulation approach. The main goal of the study is to enhance the analysis and comparison of heuristic truck dispatching policies currently available and search for an adaptive rule applicable to open pit mines. For this purpose, a stochastic truck dispatching and production simulation program is developed for a medium size open pit mine consisting of several production faces and a single dump site using GPSS/H software. Eight basic rules are modeled in separate program files. The program considers all components of truck cycle and normal distribution is used to model all these variables. The program asks the user to enter the number of trucks initially assigned to each shovel site. Full-factorial simulation experiments are made to investigate the effects of several factors including the dispatching rules, the number of trucks operating, the number of shovels operating, the variability in truck loading, hauling and return times, the distance between shovels and dump site, and availability of shovel and truck resources. The breakdown of shovel and trucks are modeled using exponential distribution. Three performance measures are selected as truck production, overall shovel utilization and overall truck utilizations. Statistical analysis of the simulation experiments is done using ANOVA method with Minitab software. Regression analysis gives coefficient of determination values, R2, of 56.7 %, 84.1 %, and 79.6 % for the three performance measures, respectively. Also, Tukey&rsquo
s method of mean comparison test is carried out to compare the basic dispatching rules. From the results of statistical analysis, it is concluded that the effects of basic truck dispatching rules on the system performance are not significant. But, the main factors affecting the performances are the number of trucks, the number of shovels, the distance between the shovels and dump site, finally the availability of shovel and truck resources. Also, there are significant interaction effects between these main factors. Finally, an adaptive rule using the standardized utilization of shovels and trucks is developed.

Abstract:
Approximately half of all framework collapses occur during concrete placement. Researchers who have measured the actual loads in formwork shores consistently found that they differ from those predicted. There is some evidence that current methods tend towards underestimation. In Australia the current practice for designing steel formwork shores is set out in Australian Standard AS 3610-1990 Formwork for Concrete. It was the first national standard to be published in limit states format and departed from previous practice introducing new methods for the design of formwork shores. Prompted by doubt cast on current practice and the absence of hard basis for the methods set out in AS 3610, the aim of the research is to develop new more reliable rules for the design of steel formwork shores. This is achieved using first-order probabilistic techniques to compare the reliability of new and reused shores designed in accordance with AS 3610 with current international permissible stress and limit states methods form British, American, Israeli and draft European formwork Standards

Johnson, Kelly. "Sholem Schwarzbard: Biography of a Jewish Assassin." Thesis, Harvard University, 2012. http://dissertations.umi.com/gsas.harvard:10644.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis represents the first complete academic biography of a Jewish clockmaker, warrior poet and Anarchist named Sholem Schwarzbard. Schwarzbard's experience was both typical and unique for a Jewish man of his era. It included four immigrations, two revolutions, numerous pogroms, a world war and, far less commonly, an assassination. The latter gained him fleeting international fame in 1926, when he killed the Ukrainian nationalist leader Symon Petliura in Paris in retribution for pogroms perpetrated during the Russian Civil War (1917-20). After a contentious trial, a French jury was sufficiently convinced both of Schwarzbard's sincerity as an avenger, and of Petliura's responsibility for the actions of his armies, to acquit him on all counts. Mostly forgotten by the rest of the world, the assassin has remained a divisive figure in Jewish-Ukrainian relations, leading to distorted and reductive descriptions his life. In contrast to these partial views, the thesis follows Schwarzbard's fate chronologically, from cradle to grave, emphasizing development and contradiction in his story. Special attention is paid the dynamic nature of Schwarzbard's Jewish, Anarchist, and French commitments. After a long struggle, it was the first of these that came to dominate Schwarzbard's life, as he called the Jews back into history and himself back to his people with a single, irrevocable deed.

Abstract:

Gibbons, M. J. "Studies on the meiofauna of rocky shores." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 1988. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8410.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: leaves 88-97.
Annual macrofaunal and meiofaunal standing stocks were estimated on an exposed rocky shore along the west coast of False Bay, South Africa, using comparable area based sampling techniques. While meiofaunal densities exceeded those of macrofauna in all zones, by an overall ratio of approximately 400:1, macrofaunal biomass exceeded that of meiofauna by an overall ratio of 10:1. The numbers of meiofauna were not evenly distributed across the shore but varied with the algal standing stocks in each zone and their sediment load. By incorporating turnover ratios from the literature, mean annual productivity ratios were calculated which suggested that meiofauna were responsible for 25 of total (excluding bacterial) secondary production. To follow this up, the impact of wave exposure on the meiofauna of one species of alga (viz. Gelidium pristoides) was examined on five shores around False Bay. Meiofaunal densities (dominated by animals between 63um-280um) were significantly greater on sheltered than exposed shores. As the minimum width of Gelidium fronds exceeds that of these permanent meiofauna, and tufts offer little resistance to wave action, only those individuals living in the dense, holdfast region of plants could escape the impact of waves on exposed shores. Total meiofaunal biomass per plant remained constant irrespective of shore type, due to the greater numbers of juvenile bivalves and amphipods on exposed shores. Algal and herbivore biomass were not significantly different between shore types around False Bay and therefore, the proportional contribution by meiofauna to total secondary production on sheltered shores was predicted to be greater than on exposed shores, where the biomass of macrofaunal filter feeders was very high. It has previously been argued that differences in meiofaunal communities between plant species are a result of differential surface area, number of habitats and refugia from predation. The possible fate of meiofaunal productivity as food for higher trophic levels (fish) and the mediating role played by algal complexity was investigated in a series of carefully designed laboratory and field experiments.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides new insight concerning drivers behind differences in arthropod diversity and abundance in Baltic shore ecosystems and how the arthropod communities might be affected when the conditions in the Baltic Sea are altered due to climate change.  The focus has been on climate related changes that are unique for coastal ecosystems, especially sea level rise and changes in the inflow of marine nutrients. As sea levels rise, features in coastal landscapes will be altered, islands and habitats will be flooded and diminished, and structural connectivity within the island landscape will therefore change. This thesis shows that arthropod diversity within the two arthropod groups, spiders and beetles, increases with island size but also that diversity is positively influenced by a high number of islands in the surroundings. A changed distribution and occurrence of marine species, due to climate change or eutrophication, can also affect terrestrial organisms on the shore.  In the Baltic Sea the new conditions following climate change will decrease the prevalence of bladder-wrack and benefit filamentous algae. Algal deposits on shores reflect the marine species composition and a decreased prevalence of bladder-wrack in the Baltic Sea will also be visible on the shores.  This thesis shows that a lower proportion of bladder-wrack in the algal deposits will decrease the diversity and abundance of arthropods in these deposits. Changes in the marine environment may also affect the inflow of insects with aquatic life stages and terrestrial adult stages.  On Baltic shores, prey species with aquatic life stages, especially chironomids, constitute a large proportion of the diet of the terrestrial predatory group, wolf spiders. In freshwater system, the inflow of chironomids is known to decrease with elevated water temperatures if this is true in the Baltic Sea prey availability of wolf spiders would decrease.  This thesis supports the importance of chironomids as a prey for coastal wolf spiders, but also shows that the diet varies over season with dominance of terrestrial prey in early summer shifting to a dominance of marine prey in late summer and autumn. This seasonal variation is primarily due to a gradual increase in the consumption of chironomids over season. Climate change has the potential to alter the biogeographical conditions in coastal landscapes as well as the density and quality of marine nutrient inflow. Sea level rise will diminish and flood islands and this thesis shows that a moderate sea level rise of 0.5 meters would make the total number of islands in the outer part of Stockholm archipelago decrease with about 25 %. Sea level rise could thus have consequences for arthropod diversity in Baltic shore meadows in the near future. The combined effects of sea level rise and changed prevalence of marine species in the Baltic Sea will affect the abundance and diversity of arthropods substantially. The abundance and diversity of spiders and beetles will decrease on shores that today have a high occurrence of bladder-wrack and prey availability for coastal predators might decrease due to a decreased inflow of chironomids. Changes in the arthropod communities could have consequences also further up in the food chain, such as for shore birds feeding on these arthropods.

Abstract:
Hurricane Shoes and Other Stories is a collection of short stories that center on evolving and devolving relationships. The characters in these stories form tentative bonds with people in their lives while other relationships slip away. In "Hurricane Shoes," Katrina attempts to reinvent herself by ending an affair. Katrina's pregnancy and her mother's cancer pull the two women closer. "Da's Violets" is about Cheryl's changing relationship with her father. Just as he moves on from the wife who left him for her podiatrist, the wife returns with hopes to reconcile. These stories catch characters in moments when they must make difficult choices and endure the uncertainties and ambiguities of relationships. In "Lady Luck," Laurel is a cocaine addict and alcoholic on the verge of finalizing a divorce. She propositions a young man named River to exchange sex for money. River turns the table, and offers Laurel a deal where she'll have all the money and drugs she wants, as long as she helps him transport cocaine. "Bridges" is a coming of age story in which Linda and Kristin have a close call with a train, and Linda matures as she realizes love has limits. The catalyst for changing relationships is sometimes an exchange between characters. In "Special Son," Mark's father is dying of cancer. The father asks his son to take special care of his mother, and Mark needs his father to finally acknowledge Mark's sexuality. In "Swim or Sink," Doreen befriends her campground neighbor, Michael McBride. McBride has been living at the campground since he left his cheating wife, and he offers Doreen insight when she discovers her husband's infidelity. Together the stories function as a mosaic--each very different, but a complement to the others in forming a larger portrayal of relationships.

Abstract:
Hurricane Ivan struck the Gulf Coast in September 2004. Ivan was classified as a category five storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale of Hurricane Intensity before it made landfall in the U.S. with winds around 165 miles per hour. Its intensity dropped to a category three as it approached the Gulf Coast. Ivan damaged not only properties and businesses along the coast but inland as well. Heavy rains caused rivers and lakes to overflow their banks and tornadoes spawned by the storm struck Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Georgia. The purpose of this research is to examine if hurricane insurance or separate endorsements adequately protects and reimburses owners for their losses and to access public and private responses to natural hazards and disaster mitigation using Gulf Shores, Alabama as a case study. Since fall 2004, many homeowners and business owners have been negotiating with their insurance companies. Owners received some help from the organizations like FEMA and the American Red Cross but these efforts were not enough to recuperate all the damages and losses. This study seeks to place the issues of insurance costs, claims and coverage in Gulf Shores, Alabama within the overall context of natural hazards research using archival sources, observation, questionnaires, and formal and informal interviews as data sources. In light of continuing migration to hurricane prone coastal areas, ever-increasing property values and insurance premiums, and the added risk of increasing hurricane frequency, this research contributes to a better understanding of the role of insurance on natural hazard mitigation and preparedness.

Abstract:
Ultra high energy cosmic ray composition is crucial to determine their source. Current techniques measure it with a limited duty cycle of 10%. The EASIER project (Extensive Air Shower Identification using Electron Radiometer) is a radio detection system integrated with the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Its goal is the measurement of the mass composition at high energy via the observation of the electromagnetic profile of air showers with a 100% duty cycle. The principle of EASIER was applied in the VHF band (30-80 MHz) in which a coherent signal was already observed and in the C band (3. 4-4. 2 GHz) in which an isotropic emission is expected. A large part of this thesis describes the development and calibration of the experimental setups in both bands. The installation of 7 detectors in the VHF band led to the detection of 36 events. Their characteristics indicate an emission beamed around the shower axis with a characteristic distance of the order of 200m for vertical showers. In the C band, 7 detector units were installed and led to the first detection of a radio signal in this band. The extension to 61 units raised the number of candidates to 4, all detected at distances to the shower axis lower than 300m. The comparison with simulations allowed us to set limits on the parameters of an isotropic emission. The distances of detection are limited by the emission mechanism and are up to now too small to fulfil EASIER goals. Improvements are underway to lower the sensitivity in both bands

Oliveira, Adalberto Ribeiro. Master's thesis, FEUC, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10316/24675.

Abstract:

Chester, Thomas J. "Hard soled shoes : a poetry collection." Virtual Press, 2005. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1313071.

Abstract:
Hard Soled Shoes is a collection of poetry designed to appeal to several, specific audiences. The first audience consists of: other poets, creative writers, and literary critics. I have submitted a work drawn from the life experience of a 42 year-old man. I crafted the poems with the academic learning gained from a graduate study of poetry and creative writing. My graduate education has helped me recognize a higher and broader standard in the realm of poetry. It also enabled me to refine my own style of writing; a comfortable mix of song lyrics and image-rich writing.Another group I hope to reach with this collection is a segment of readers who have a limited knowledge of poetry. I feel it is important to reach out beyond the academic community to a broader audience. There are many people outside academia who can appreciate and enjoy good poetry. I chose many poems for this collection that are accessible and relevant to people of many backgrounds, interests, and demographics. The use of humor, meter, rhyme, and familiar characters give the pieces understandable "hooks" to draw the attention of readers. The inclusion of song lyrics and musical devices like refrains bring a familiarity to readers who only have experience of poetry through popular music. My intent is to use simple and clear language to express more complex ideas. Hopefully the depth of subject matter will entice readers to re-read certain pieces and consider new ideas. The use of repetition and rhyme will hopefully bring focus and power to certain poems and create at least a few memorable or quotable lines from the collection.I believe a poetry collection can be an artistic endeavor and still have a broad entertainment appeal. My education has prepared me to recognize and write quality, literary poetry suitable for publication. My years of experience producing creative ideas for media and advertising have made me aware of the challenges of trying to reach a vast audience. I see a hole in the media market. I believe good, accessible poetry could fill a void and successfully satisfy the needs of a specific, literary niche.

Abstract:
A Work Project, presented as part of the requirements for the Award of a Masters Degree in Management from the NOVA – School of Business and Economics
The purpose of this project is to prepare and help ShoesCloset company for international business activity, namely in Germany. After having a careful study on the core foundation of the company I conclude that ShoesCloset has indeed potential to succeed by offering what the target segment is looking for in footwear. Nevertheless, the firm still has to improve in areas such as marketing, management operations, distribution channels and internal structure. In relation to the German market and according to my studies the best mode of entry is through direct exports, which would be under the supervision of the CEO. Moreover, it is imperative to increase the productive capacity in order to satisfy both national and international expected demands.
