"Artemisinin is a potent antimalarial drug produced in the plant Artemisia annua. Earlier reports suggested that the roots play a key role in artemisinin production; however, it was not clear if other factors actually affected production instead of roots. Here the role of roots and two phytohormones, NAA and BAP, were studied to determine what role each plays in artemisinin production in the plant. Rooted Artemisia annua shoots produced significantly more artemisinin, arteannuin B, and deoxyartemisinin, the end products in the pathway, than unrooted shoots. Although roots do not seem to affect

Artemisinin is a potent antimalarial sesquiterpene lactone produced and stored in the glandular trichomes (GLTs) of Artemisia annua. Although they produce no artemisinin, nor any of the precursor compounds, A. annua roots appear to have a regulatory effect on production of the terpene in leaves. However, more information is needed to define the role of the roots in artemisinin production in the plant. Grafting among three cultivars was used to measure phenotypic responses: SAM, and #15 cultivars both have GLTs, but produce artemisinin at 1.49% and 0.57% DW, respectively; GLS cultivar produces

Abstract:
Fine roots constitute a large part of the primary production in northern (arctic and boreal) ecosystems, and are key players in ecosystem fluxes of water, nutrients and carbon. Data on root dynamics are generally rare, especially so in northern ecosystems. However, those ecosystems undergo the most rapid climatic changes on the planet and a profound understanding of form, function and dynamics of roots in such ecosystems is essential. This thesis aimed to advance our knowledge about fine root dynamics in northern ecosystems, with a focus on fine root phenology in natural plant communities and

Originating from a disenfranchisement with the contemporary definition and realisation of Westernised architecture as a commodity and product, this thesis seeks to explore alternative examples of positive socio-spatial practice and agency. These alternative spatial practices and methodologies are drawn from participatory and grass-roots development agency in informal settlements and contexts of economic absence, most notably in the global South. This thesis explores whether such examples can be interpreted as practical realisations of key theoretical advocacies for positive social space that h

Despite the assumption that education prepares students for their future, it often lacks a long-term vision of what that future may be. Furthermore, conventional education has overlooked fundamental questions of sustainability facing future generations. The future cannot be predicted with certainty; however, it can be said that the current and looming ecological crises will

With the deciphering of rice genome and advancement of functional genomics technology, researchers were able to gradually reveal the mechanism of abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms in rice and to identify essential genes for breeding to improve stress tolerance. In South Africa, clonal forestry of Eucalyptus and its hybrids has been implemented to increase the productivity on existing forestry lands and marginal sites and to facilitate the production of desired fibre types for timber processing operations. The cold-tolerant Eucalyptus grandis x E. nitens hybrids have produced consistently high yields, and are propagated clonally with limited success via a macro-cutting system currently in use for other hybrid species. The heart of vegetative propagation operations is the clonal hedge and its management, and nutrition in particular, is an important ele
